Shining a Light on the Orkelljunga Preschool Community

This thesis contributed to the regional Health School project, specifically informing the community- building efforts of a preschool in Örkelljunga, Sweden as they seek ways to improve communication among immigrant families and teachers. Using a co-design process with stakeholders including a preschool teacher, architects redesigning the school, and a health sciences researcher, this research investigated how a welcoming atmosphere could be created to act as a social intervention in the redesigned school. Interactive ambient light installations are proposed as a way to create this welcoming atmosphere. Installation design was explored through the lenses of multicultural makeup; play behaviour; accessibility and lighting design. Concluding the design research process, which used methods of participatory design, experience prototyping (Buchenau and Fulton Suri, 2000), and live prototyping (Horst and Matthews, 2016), a set of design principles were distilled for stakeholders.

Tangible interfaces for children’s mental healthcare

The area of healthcare has a lot of challenges and restrictions when it comes to design. There is no access to one of the users. A research on this topic resulted in the creation of Robbi – an interactive toy that supports communication between a child and psychologist during their therapy sessions.Children (patients) as stakeholders are a very vulnerable party of this project and as they were not involved in the process directly; there was no opportunity for intervention, observation or action research. When the therapeutic session is happening, the setting of the environment has to be as comfortable for the client as possible and the presence of a third person at the session would disturb the result in a severe way.I would argue here that the therapists can act as proxies in the projects related to design for MHC clients. Psychology therapists are skilled and experienced observers and area experts. In many cases we actually have to think: who is the real end user of our design? What relationships are there between the stakeholders and the solution are? As the project involves therapists as participatory design actors it is fair to say that the therapists are primary users of the design concept that is to be created. It has to fit all the needs of the doctor, enable them to make the therapy sessions more efficient, engaging and profound. At the same time the concept has to be developed in the framework of interaction for children in terms of visuals, tangibility, emotional content and usability.

Denna rapport avser att undersöka för- och nackdelar med att utveckla ett för ändamålet specialanpassat system eller utnyttja de standardsystem, som i det aktuella fallet tryckerikoncernen JMS redan äger och använder. Genom en mer noggrann definiering av ickefunktionella krav på bland annat användbarhet har en specialanpassad prototyp framställts. I projektet användes metoder för kravinsamling som ledde till en kravspecifikation och i sin tur slutade med en färdig prototyp. Prototypen jämfördes med två standardsystem genom användartester och intervjuer. Prototypen visade sig leva upp till de krav som upptäcktes. Majoriteten av testpersonerna föredrog ett enklare avskalat system, vilket prototypen upplevdes som, före system med mycket information och funktioner. Med tanke på kostnaden rekommenderas dock JMS att försöka strukturera upp ett av de i företaget befintliga systemen och använda detta istället för att utveckla och implementera ytterligare ett nytt system i företaget. / This report intends to explore the pros and cons of developing a customized system or use the standard system, which in this case printing JMS Group already owns and uses. With a more accurate definition of non-functional requirements such as usability, has a custom-made prototype been built. The project used methods of requirements gathering that led to a specification and ended with a finished prototype. The prototype was compared with two standard systems through user testing and interviews. The prototype proved to live up to the requirements discovered. The majority of test subjects preferred a simpler clean system, which the prototype was, to systems with a lot of information and functions. Given the cost JMS was recommended to structure one of the systems that they already owns and uses instead of developing and implementing a new system further in the company.

This bachelor thesis aims to present an overview of the performed steps to construct and program a prototype of a mechanical mirror. The idea of a mechanical mirror is that a camera captures an image that is translated into pixels of different brightness values. The brightness values are later displayed by metal plates, acting as pixels, rotated to different angles to reflect a corresponding light from a lamp. The pixels together shape grayscale images based on the frames captured by the camera. A prototype was constructed successfully. Tests showed that its purpose to move according to the captured image was fulfilled although adjustments could be made for the light to reach all the pixels to a greater extent. The angle span for the pixels turned out to be between 32°and 44°, which proved sufficient for their purpose. The reason for a difference in angle spans between the pixels was due to minor construction errors and was not an issue of functionality for the mirror. The refresh rate of the mirror, which could be described as the frequency at which the pixels rotate and shape an image, was set to 25 frames per second. This allowed the mirror to mimic movements in front of it without much delay while not exceeding the frame rate of the camera, which capture at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The camera was therefore the vital limitation for the refresh rate of the mirror. / Detta kanidatexamensarbete har syftet att presentera en översikt av de steg som genomfördes för att konstruera och programmera en prototyp av en mekanisk spegel. Idén med en mekanisk spegel är att en kamera läser in en bild som sedan är översatt till pixlar med olika värden på ljusstyrka. Dessa ljusstyrkor visas sedan av metallplattor, vilka agerar som pixlar, som roterar till olika vinklar för att reflektera motsvarande ljus från en lampa. Pixlarna formar tillsammans gråskalebilder baserat på de bilder som kameran läser in. En prototyp konstruerades framgångsrikt. Test visade att dess syfte att röra sig i enlighet med den inlästa bilden uppfylldes, dock finns plats för justeringar för att ljuset från lampan ska nå pixlarna i större utsträckning. Pixlarnas vinkelomfång visade sig bli mellan 32°och 44°, vilket konstaterades vara tillräckligt för deras syfte. Skillnaden i vinkelomfång mellan pixlarna berodde på mindre konstruktionsfel och påverkade inte spegelns funktionalitet. Spegelns uppdateringsfrekvens, vilket kan beskrivas som frekvensen med vilken pixlarna roterar och formar en bild, sattes till 25 bilder per sekund. Detta tillät spegeln att härma rörelser framför den utan stor fördröjning utan att överstiga kamerans bildhastighet, som läser in med en bildhastighet på 30 bilder per sekund. Design and Testing of an Adult Age-Independent Online Needs Assessment Tool and Development of Adult Age-Independent Design Guidelines

This thesis addressed the following research activities: (1) Developing and evaluating the usability of an adult age-independent online assessment tool that includes health care related content and is centered on the needs and capabilities of both older and younger users and, (2) Developing adult age-independent design guidelines. An online tool, which was developed for a previous study, was revised according to the results of the previous study and preliminary development activities based upon the user requirements of older adults (50 years or older). The online assessment tool was also tested with younger adults (between 18 and 35 years of age) to determine the differences between younger and older adults. Subsequent to these activities, a final tool that captured the needs of both older and younger adults was developed and evaluated for usability. According to the usability testing results, a design guideline set for an adult age-independent Online Needs Assessment Tool was developed and revisions were conducted in order to develop the final Online Needs Assessment Tool. The results of these studies, along with the tools developed, provide online survey and interface designers information on older and younger adult user requirements. They provide a knowledge resource for older and younger user healthcare information needs and information about the usability of one online assessment tool to accommodate both older and younger adult users. The Swedish Defence Research Agency is exploring the development of AI assistants for military planning. This thesis investigates the graphical user interface aspects of generative AI assistants. Following initial focus groups, a prototype was developed and assessed through user testing. The findings highlight several crucial elements to consider when designing a user interface for an AI assistant in military planning: user-friendliness, the ability to summarize documents and mission orders, an interactive map accessible to the AI assistant, and an interface to gather data and responses from the AI assistant. Implementing features crucial to the specification is essential when addressing complex tasks involving sensitive and precise data. The broader context of using generative AI represents a rapidly advancing research area that warrants close examination.

Exploration of Piezoelectric Sensors for Signal Processing and Health Monitoring

To address the growing demand for accurate and reliable wearable technologyin health monitoring and fitness tracking, this report presents a novel stepcounter integrated into a shoe. The goal is to enhance the precision of stepcounting and provide valuable health metrics, such as calorie burning. Theapproach involves a custom-designed circuit board that processes the signalfrom the piezoelectric disks, and an algorithm is developed to accuratelycount steps. The final phase involves constructing a functional prototype forextensive real-world testing. After testing and simulations, the systemdemonstrated a high level of accuracy in step counting. It successfullyprocessed and analyzed step data, providing insightful health metrics thatcould be used for fitness tracking. Lastly, the prototype achieved its goal ofaccurate step counting but also proved to be a significant contribution to thefield of wearable technology. But it could be further improved to have betterdurability and not break. This advancement has the potential to improve thereliability and effectiveness of fitness-tracking devices.
