Childhood abuse, resiliency, and psychiatric outcomes in a college sample of women: A model

Luna, Laura Liliana 01 January 2007 (has links)
In the proposed study it is hypothesized that resiliency will moderate the relationship between child abuse and psychiatric outcomes. Secondly, it is expected that shame will mediate the above mentioned relationship. Mediation and moderation effects will be tested via SPSS REGRESSION. Data was collected from 160 women at California State University, San Bernardino. The following measures were used to examine the hypothesis: Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory, Experience of Shame Scale, Self-Esteem Inventory, the Life Orientation Test-Revised, and the Social Support Inventory.

Based on this information, the objective of this research was to study the structure and dynamics of psychic functioning of five women involved in repeated domestic violence. This is a clinical-qualitative study, whose participants were selected by convenience and are part of a group of women victims of domestic violence, attended by a non-governmental organization, with proceeding pending in a Criminal Court of São Paulo. Was used as research instruments with a semi-structured Interview Guide; the scale of the Brazilian Association of Market Research Institutes (ABIPEME); and the Object Relations Test Phillipson (TRO). The results show that the participants have weakened ego, poorly integrated and rigid superego, little indistinguishable from their destructive impulses and its internal persecutors, the result of introjections and deflections for the needy overseas. This mental dynamics developed from primary processes of very violent split, with a predominance of destructive impulses and the death drive on the life drive. In addition, it was noted that the participants remains predominantly in the paranoid-schizoid phase of development, unable to achieve properly the depressive position of repair, so they use primitive defense mechanisms to maintain mental balance as projective identification , denial, idealization and stalling. It is expected that the results of this research can assist in drawing up proposals for assisting women in repeated domestic violence situation.

The exaltation affixed to the act of working in the western world grants the working person a social identity, that is to say, people are whatever they do, and they do so for another (Social Law) who can recognize them as desiring subjects, consequently creates ties of libidinal investment between the party offering his/her services (worker) and the other party desiring to hire him/her. . Through labor relationship, an organization will show its other side, which will take up a function of law, a paternal function, which the subject will be connected to in search of recognition, identification and fulfillment of his/her Desires. Furthermore, organizations are a place of psychic imprisonment, repression, and suffer feeding the eternal clash between the Individual and the Social; the Subject and The Organization; the Law and the Desire. Thus, this study aims at analyzing the clashes of workers within their job situation and the subjective constitution originating as a consequence of these clashes, which we call organizational subject. By making use of previous studies, especially those by Enriquez and Dejours, and by interviewing a diverse range of individuals, it was possible to gain an overview of individual and collective self-defense mechanisms as a means of relieving the pain brought about by the experience of work, and the construction of psychic representations on the subject, subjectivity, work, working subject, and yet the construction/alteration of material, social and historical experiences. Bearing in mind that the meanings a working person sets on his/her work and life project echoes both present and past experiences as well as expectations - even when these can not be seen clearly at the time of analysis. Therefore it is essential to understand that the architecture of analysis as well as the subject to be analyzed is highly marked by the singularity and subjectivity, allowing different examinations and approaches.

Epidemiological, phenomenological, and treatment aspects of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents

Seedat, Soraya 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Psychiatry))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / Many gaps remain in our current state of knowledge about the epidemiology, phenomenology, neurobiology, and psychopharmacology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adolescents. Empirical evidence, particularly in non-Western settings, is sparse and there is little convergent understanding of the interrelationship of epidemiological factors, PTSD symptom expression, full and partial syndromes, disorders comorbid with PTSD, and pharmacotherapeutic interventions. Clinicians are faced with the difficult task of treating this often complicated and debilitating disorder in youth in the absence of data from well-controlled clinical trials. The studies detailed here are a point of departure for understanding the confluence that exists between epidemiological, phenomenological, and pharmacotherapeutic aspects of adolescent PTSD. Two studies were conducted to investigate the prevalence and effects of violence exposure and PTSD, clinical and functional correlates of full and partial syndromes, and associated gender differences in school and clinic samples, respectively. Two preliminary open-label trials assessed the efficacy and safety of a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) in adolescents with at least moderate severity PTSD. The results indicate that (i) partial PTSD is a common nosological entity in adolescents, (ii) gender-related differences in PTSD, even if not manifest in differences in prevalence (i.e., in the rates of trauma exposure and full and partial PTSD), may well manifest in symptom expression (i.e., higher symptom burden in girls), associated morbidity, and functional impairment, and (iii) SSRIs may be effective in treating core PTSD symptoms in this age group. While not yet demonstrated, the partial subtype may have similar biological underpinnings to full PTSD in adolescents and may benefit from similar pharmacotherapeutic interventions. This is an area deserving of further investigation. Controlled SSRI data are needed to establish if these should be agents of choice for paediatric PTSD.

Fashion Joins the Digital Revolution : A study on the Impact of Digitalisation in the Swedish High-End Fashion Industry

Hijazi, Aya, Strannhage, Pernilla January 2016 (has links)
Digitalisation is one of the greatest transformations in modern times and has impacted organisations, industry structures and the society as a whole. It provides new opportunities for fashion firms to interact with different stakeholders and has altered the way firms operate in foreign markets. Based on in-depth interviews with managers of Swedish high-end fashion firms, the aim of the study was to explore what impact digitalisation has on managers’ perceived psychic distance in their international operations. In particular, how managers use digital technologies to obtain and interpret information about supply and demand conditions in foreign markets was examined. The empirical findings indicate that digital technologies are essential for firms today, as they have increased information availability, enhanced information usage and improved interactive communication. This, in turn, leads to a reduction of managers’ perceived psychic distance.

Göcmen, Olga, Saidi, Saman, Sourati, Behzad January 2007 (has links)
<p>Our increasingly globalized world has contributed to that more Swedish companies has expanded their business to more distant areas. One of these Swedish companies that now stands before their first international expansion is the Swedish fast-food chain Max AB. Max has chosen to start their expansion in Saudi Arabia, a country far away from Sweden, not only in terms of geographical distance but also in cultural. The cultural differences that Max will encounter may affect the business and result in to various adaptations that must be done in order to establish successfully. The thesis investigates the existing circumstances for the fastfood business in Saudi Arabia and shows which adaptations international fast-food chains should or must do as a result of the cultural distances they encounter. Subsequently there will be an exposition of which adaptations Max will accomplish in their concept with their establishment in Saudi Arabia. The investigation method that has been used is qualitative interviews. The interviews were with Max’ franchise manager and former marketing director for McDonald’s in the Middle Eastern region. The outcome of our investigation shows clear cultural differences and that fast-food chains have to conduct themselves and adapt to these differences in order to establish successfully.</p><p>Key words: Fast-food business, Max AB, McDonald’s, Saudi Arabia, psychic distance, culture, adaptations</p> / <p>Vår allt mer globaliserade värld har medfört att alltfler svenska företag internationaliserar sin verksamhet till mer avlägsna områden.

Barriers in online internationalization : The reality for online service providers

Pettersson, Eric, Uppström, Johan January 2019 (has links)
Due to strong growth in the virtual business environment, online internationalization has become a topic of high interest. This makes it necessary for firms providing software online to carefully investigate and understand barriers and differences in countries before entering them. Further, companies expanding abroad face a variety of differences compared to their home market, which has to be carefully understood in order to succeed internationally and to avoid misinterpretations. This thesis took a qualitative approach and was based on six semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions, all performed with CEOs, founders or managers with explicit knowledge in the online internationalization phase of their firms. The insights from the interviews acknowledge which differences and barriers the firms faced and how they perceived them. The outline and result of the study were based on the four dimensions of cultural, administrative, geographic and economic challenges. The result showed that the cultural and geographic dimensions were barely perceived as barriers by the firms, the administrative dimensions moderately, whereas the companies clearly perceived the economic dimensions as barriers in their internationalization processes. Additional findings of the study were the importance of cultural leadership, hierarchies &amp; decision-making processes, high-density clusters and pricing strategies.

Foundational Knowledge and Other Predictors of Commitment to Trauma-Informed Care

Sundborg, Stephanie Anne 24 May 2017 (has links)
Trauma-informed care (TIC) is an approach to service delivery based on the understanding of the prevalence of psychological trauma among service users, knowledge about the impact trauma has on engagement to services, and recognition that service settings can be re-traumatizing. For more than a decade, momentum has been building on this topic. Practitioners are pursuing the knowledge and skills needed to implement trauma-informed service delivery, while organizations are building infrastructure and processes aimed at supporting this approach. Disciplines across many human service sectors are eager to incorporate TIC into policy and practice. Despite this enthusiasm, implementation efforts are slow. Acquiring foundational knowledge about TIC has typically been recommended as a first step when implementing a trauma-informed approach. However, slow progress in implementation suggests knowledge may not be enough. This study investigated the individual characteristics that impact a commitment to TIC, with specific attention to the relationship between foundational knowledge about trauma-informed care and commitment to TIC. Other variables of interest included perceived principal support, TIC self-efficacy, beliefs about trauma and its impact, and organizational strain. Survey data were collected from 118 participants working in mental health, public health, and early childhood. Results from structural equation modeling suggest that foundational knowledge predicts affective commitment to TIC both directly and with the partially mediated paths through principal support, TIC self-efficacy, and beliefs about trauma. Organizational strain does not moderate these effects. However, group differences based on high and low levels of perceived organizational strain were observed and discussed. These findings add to the growing literature on TIC and should be considered as organizations strive to implement TIC.
