Pupils' Attitudes Towards Technology – Grade 4 (PATT-G4):  Establishing A Valid and Reliable Instrument

Technological literacy is the goal of technology education and in order to attain this goal, students need to be able "to use, manage and understand technology" (ITEA, 2000/2002/2007). Students need to have positive attitudes towards technology and can engage in their technological world. Technological Literacy is an ever-increasing requirement in this 21st Century for students in order for people to engage in their technological world it may well be that we need students to be technologically literate so that we can address these up-and-coming issues. In teaching technology education at the primary level, it is essential to develop valid assessments that gauge student's attitudes about technology so that the results inform policy makers, educators, and curriculum writers to improve the schools' curriculum and advance the teaching of technology education. The purpose of this study was the validation of a modified version of the PATT-USA instrument called the Pupils' Attitudes Towards Technology – Grade 4 (PATT-G4) for use with 4th grade students to assess their attitudes and concepts toward contemporary technology. A literature review reviewing the theoretical frameworks for technology education, the educational shift towards technological literacy as well as best practices for measuring student attitudes and instrument development was conducted. This study was a non-experimental descriptive cross-sectional survey research design which included several statistical tests that were similarly used for the original PATT-USA instrument. Results from the data analysis indicated that students who were enrolled in a technology education program had more positive attitudes towards technology and technological concepts. Furthermore, both boys and girls had very strong attitudes towards the importance of technology. In order to do this a school project about the history of mathematics is planned, implemented and analysed.</p><p>The following questions are addressed:</p><p>▪ Why use the history of mathematics in teaching?</p><p>▪ How can the history of mathematics be used in teaching?</p><p>▪ Can a historical perspective in teaching affect pupils’ views on mathematics?</p><p>The school curriculum emphasizes the importance of history in teaching. The present work is based upon three studies performed between 2012 and 2014 at the Swedish upper secondary school with pupils studying Spanish as a foreign language. The first study investigates through lesson diaries and an online survey the pupils’ attitudes towards and perceptions of computer use in language learning at large, and specifically of online grammar exercises as compared to paper-based exercises. The participating pupils showed mixed attitudes towards using online exercises for grammar practice, with high demands on websites’ design and user friendliness, as well as for the correctness and reliability of automated corrections. A majority preferred mixed teaching methods (including computer use, teacher-led explanations and the use of paper- and pen-based exercises, especially translation tasks). The major advantage of using computers was considered to be for essay writing and information search. The second study investigates how a group of pupils use online resources when writing essays in Spanish, focussing on their extensive use of online translation services such as Google translate. The writing strategies of these pupils with free access to the Internet are compared to the strategies of another group working without Internet access. The third study examines effects of the use of online translation on the language in the pupils’ essays. The texts written with online translation are compared to texts written without Internet access, but with access to printed dictionaries. Few statistically significant differences can be seen between the two groups. These concern grammatical and lexical complexity and accuracy. The most clear differences regard spelling and article/noun/adjective congruence (with higher degrees of accuracy among the users of online translation), and syntax (with fewer errors in the group writing without online translation). The grammatical complexity was also somewhat higher in the online translation group. As for fluency (text length) and complexity, differences can be correlated to the pupils’ proficiency in Spanish, whereas no such correlation can be seen regarding accuracy.

RNDr. Jarmila Robová, CSc., Department of Mathematics Education Abstract: Despite the long-term trend of technology implementation in mathematics education, there is not much research that would empirically and long-term monitor the impact of technology on pupils' knowledge. The presented three studies examine the potential benefits of using Khan Academy as a tool for assigning and assessing homework in mathematics at upper secondary schools. The studies deal with three groups of research questions. What is the attitude of pupils towards the Khan Academy implementation, and what benefit do they see in the online practice? Can pupils transfer acquired knowledge from Khan Academy to the school context? In addition to procedural knowledge, does Khan Academy develop a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts? At the time of the research, the author was the mathematics teacher of some of the participating pupils. Based on the results of these studies, the consequences and recommendations for teaching mathematics at upper secondary schools using online platforms are discussed at the end of the thesis. Objektas – 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių požiūris į sveikatos ugdymą. Tikslas – ištirti 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių nuomonių skirtumus apie sveikatos ugdymą. Uždaviniai: 1. palyginti 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių nuomonę apie socialinės aplinkos įtaką rūpinantis sveikata. 2. palyginti 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių sveikos gyvensenos būdus, įvertinant balais. 3. palyginti 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių nuomonę apie sveiką gyvenseną įtakojančius veiksnius. 4. palyginti 5-8 ir 9-12 klasių mokinių nuomonę apie sveikos gyvensenos temų aptarimą pamokų metu. Svarbiausi rezultatai - Tyrimo duomenys parodė, kad 5-8 klasių mokiniams sveikatos ugdymas tiek mokykloje, tiek neformalaus ugdymo veikloje yra prastesnis, lyginant su 9-12 klasių mokiniais. Statistiškai matoma, kad 5-8 klasių mokiniai mažiau užsiima sportu, nes anketoje pateiktus sveikatai ir sveikam gyvenimo būdui veiksnius jie vertina labiau nereikšmingais, nei 9-12 klasių mokiniai. Galima drąsiai teigti, kad 5-8 klasių mokiniai iš dalies neįsisavina informacijos apie sveikatos ugdymą, kuriuos aptaria per mokykloje dėstomus dalykus. Išvados - Pagal gautus rezultatus galima teigti, kad tiek 5-8, tiek 9-12 klasių mokinių požiūris į sveikatos ugdymą nėra pakankamas ir šią situaciją reiktų pradėti keisti nuo sveikos gyvensenos temų aptarimo, jo dažnumo pamokų metu. Objectives: 1. compare 5-8 and 9-12 grade students about the social environment to health. 2. compare 5-8 and 9-12 grade students a healthy lifestyle means of evaluating scores. 3. compare 5-8 and 9-12 grade students about healthy lifestyles influencing factors. 4. compare 5-8 and 9-12 grade students about healthy living areas to the classroom. The most important results - the study showed that students in grades 5-8 in school health education and non-formal education activities are inferior compared to 9-12 grade students. Statistically seen that 5-8 students less engaged in the sport because of a health questionnaire and a healthy lifestyle factors are the more trivial than 9-12 students. It is safe to say that 5-8 students partly assimilate information about health education, which are discussed within the school subjects. Conclusions - The results suggest that both the 5-8 and 9-12 grade students approach to health education is not sufficient and that the situation should begin to change from a healthy lifestyle topics discussion, the frequency of lessons. The third chapter brings an overview of current situation concerning education of these pupils in the Region Pardubice. Last chapter is dedicated to analysis primary school pupils' attitudes to the joint education with disabled students.

Organizing Children and Youth Tobacco Prevention in Community / Vaikų ir jaunimo rūkymo prevencijos organizavimas bendruomenėje

Aim. To assess the association of smoking prevention program with children knowledge and attitudes towards smoking as well as with their smoking behavior. Methods. Survey targeted at the 11-15 years old pupils and was carried out in four schools in Latvia and four schools in Liverpool before and after peer-to-peer pilot intervention. 931 questionnaires in Riga and 836 in Liverpool were used for data analysis. SPSS 15.0 for Windows has been utilized for processing the statistical data. The statistical significance of the data in question was tested, by using the chi-square (χ2) and Z criteria. Results. 15% of pupils in Riga (12% girls and 19% boys) and 8% in Liverpool (13% and 5%) smoked during last month, from which 3% and 1% - smoked daily. 92% of respondents in Liverpool and 94% in Riga knew that smoking is harmful for health. Before intervention 85% of pupils in Riga and 90% in Liverpool declared not smoking if one of the best friends offered a cigarette, ever smokers were less likely to resist. 35% in Liverpool and 49% Riga thought that girls and accordingly, 29% and 40% boys who smoke have less friends. Majority of population in both cities thought that smoking makes young people look less attractive. The presented diploma thesis deals with the use of formative assessment in the educational area Man and His World. Its outcome offers a possible way of solving the shortcomings of the area in question which negatively affects pupils' attitudes towards the school subjects of this educational area. The theoretical part presents findings about the assessment in general, namely its definition, presentation of functions, types and forms of assessment. It also emphasizes the relationship between the objectives and assessment which will be a pivotal one in the educational area in question. It also discusses the specifics of this educational area in relation to the impact on pupils' attitudes. Findings about formative assessment are focused on the definition, analysis of advantages and methods of implementation into teaching. The empirical part is based on the findings from the theoretical part and is carried out by a mixed research design. Questionnaire, interview and observation was used as methods to conduct the research. The aim was to find out whether the pupils who are assessed formatively have a more positive attitude than the pupils, who are assessed only summatively.
