Using the Media as a Means to Develop Students’ Statistical Concepts

In this era of increasingly fast communication people are being exposed to quantitative information, from national and international sources, through a range of media including newspapers, magazines, television, radio, pod-casts, YouTube and other areas of the Internet. Contexts include health statistics, environmental issues, traffic statistics, wars, gun laws and so on. It is becoming more and more important that citizens are able to critically read and interpret this information, and to do so requires an understanding of statistical concepts. Research has shown that students are motivated and engaged in learning through the use of authentic, real life tasks. The media provides current information, which can be used to help develop both students’ awareness of how social issues are constructed as well as vital statistical concepts. This paper proposes that secondary school students\' application of a model for statistical analysis to material taken from media sources, enhances their understanding of statistical concepts. This model, called the Five Step Framework, is described and exemplified for the particular context of opinion polling.

Environmental Indicators for the Evaluation of Wood Products in Consideration of Site-Dependent Aspects: A Review and Integrated Approach

On the way towards a more biobased economy, the sustainable use of global wood resources remains a challenge as several trade-offs arise, e.g., from an increased energetic use of wood, an increased use of innovative but probably less recyclable wood composites, or from the need to conserve other forest ecosystem services. The aim of this study is to identify existing environmental indicators and methods for an evaluation of the sustainability of wood products in consideration of all life cycle stages, site-dependent aspects and later use in corporate decision-making. We chose a systematic literature review to answer the research questions explicitly and comprehensively. Qualitative content analysis was used to code indicators and scientific methods according to the Pressure-State-Response (PSR) framework. The sample (N = 118) is characterized by a high number of life cycle assessment (LCA) case studies. In 51% of all studies, the study authors use a combination of different methods. A total of 78 indicators and 20 site-dependent aspects could be identified in the sample. The study findings represent a first step towards a holistic environmental assessment of wood products.

Relative contribution of land use change and climate variability on discharge of upper Mara River, Kenya

Study region Nyangores River watershed, headwater catchment of Mara River basin in Kenya. Study focus Climate variability and human activities are the main drivers of change of watershed hydrology. The contribution of climate variability and land use change to change in streamflow of Nyangores River, was investigated. Mann Kendall and sequential Mann Kendall tests were used to investigate the presence and breakpoint of a trend in discharge data (1965–2007) respectively. The Budyko framework was used to separate the respective contribution of drivers to change in discharge. Future response of the watershed to climate change was predicted using the runoff sensitivity equation developed. New hydrological insights for the region There was a significant increasing trend in the discharge with a breakpoint in 1977. Land use change was found to be the main driver of change in discharge accounting for 97.5% of the change. Climate variability only caused a net increase of the remaining 2.5% of the change; which was caused by counter impacts on discharge of increase in rainfall (increased discharge by 24%) and increase in potential evapotranspiration (decreased discharge by 21.5%). Climate change was predicted to cause a moderate 16% and 15% increase in streamflow in the next 20 and 50 years respectively. Change in discharge was specifically attributed to deforestation at the headwaters of the watershed.

Demonstration of a Broadband Photodetector Based on a 2D Metal–Organic Framework

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging as an appealing class of highly tailorable electrically conducting materials with potential applications in optoelectronics. Yet, the realization of their proof-of-concept devices remains a daunting challenge, attributed to their poor electrical properties. Following the authors’ recent report on a semiconducting Fe₃(THT)₂(NH₄)₃ (THT: 2,3,6,7,10,11-triphenylenehexathiol) 2D MOF with record-high mobility and band-like charge transport, here, Fe₃(THT)₂(NH₄)₃ MOF-based photodetector operating in photoconductive mode capable of detecting a broad wavelength range from UV to NIR (400–1575 nm) is demonstrated. The narrow IR bandgap of the active layer (≈0.45 eV) constrains the performance of the photodetector at room temperature by band-to-band thermal excitation of charge carriers. At 77 K, the device performance is significantly improved; two orders of magnitude higher voltage responsivity, lower noise equivalent power, and higher specific detectivity of 7 × 10⁸ cm Hz¹/² W⁻¹ are achieved under 785 nm excitation. These figures of merit are retained over the analyzed spectral region (400–1575 nm) and are commensurate to those obtained with the first demonstrations of graphene and black phosphorus based photodetectors. This work demonstrates the feasibility of integrating conjugated MOFs as an active element into broadband photodetectors, thus bridging the gap between materials’ synthesis and technological applications.

Driving Strategy with Employees: A sustainable Maturity Model approach for Intraorganizational Online Collaboration

Die vorliegende Dissertation untersucht die digitalen Transformationen in der Arbeitswelt und die daraus resultierenden Anforderungen an die Intraorganisatorische Online-Zusammenarbeit (IOC). Vor dem Hintergrund der dynamischen VUCA-Welt wird die Notwendigkeit hervorgehoben, die IOC-Fähigkeiten von Organisationen ganzheitlich zu bewerten und zu verbessern. Als zentrale wissenschaftliche Beiträge werden ein umfassender Anforderungskatalog für IOC-Steuerungsinstrumente dokumentiert und angewendet, die IOC-Literatur durch die systematische Aufarbeitung von 334 wissenschaftlichen Publikationen synthetisiert und deren Erfolgsfaktoren kategorisiert. Zudem wird ein IOC-Reifegradmodell mit domänenrelevanten Fähigkeiten und einer Entwicklungsstrategie vorgestellt. Der DEDAC-Reifegradmodell-Rahmen stellt einen domänenunabhängigen konzeptuellen Ansatz zur Verbesserung der Reifegradmodell-Praktikabilität dar, ergänzt durch Richtlinien für die Gestaltung von Delphi-Studien zur Reifegradmodell-Entwicklung. Aus praktischer Perspektive bietet die Arbeit einen Anforderungskatalog für IOC-Steuerungsinstrumente, eine systematische Übersicht über IOC-Erfolgsfaktoren, eine Kategorisierung und einen Reifepfad für das Management von IOC. Der DEDAC-Reifegradmodell-Rahmen dient zudem als Ansatz zur Steuerung und kontinuierlichen Verbesserung von IOC und anderen Bereichen. Trotz der umfangreichen Beiträge gibt es Limitationen, insbesondere die fehlende weitere Evaluierung des DEDAC-Reifegradmodell-Rahmens und die fehlende praktische Anwendung des IOC-Reifegradmodell-Prototyps in Organisationen. Zukünftige Forschungen könnten sich auf die Anwendung und Evaluation des IOC-Reifegradmodell-Prototyps in realen Organisationen konzentrieren, die Anpassungsfähigkeit an die Organisation untersuchen und den Reifepfad dynamisieren.
