The Fractions project, main title of this paper, aims at reaching not only basic education students but also educators with the objective of proposing understandable and attractive ways of teaching the subject matter in focus.The methodology applied in learning rational numbers in their fractional form was achieved through the playful and practical exercises involving two groups of 6th graders in the Fundamental from public schools. The material handling and display of results contribute to the construction of knowledge on Mathematics and consequently its learning. The teaching activities and experiments are the hallmark and engine for the development of this dissertation project due to the fact that the use of manipulable material (graded PET bottles, funnels and water) ensures originality to the teaching/learning relationship of Mathematics.Mathematical concepts such as equivalence and comparison between fractions and even basic operations (addition and subtraction) purposely confine in the teaching sequences carried out in the educational project. / O objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado é o Ensino da Matemática bem como as práticas didático-pedagógicas acerca do tema números racionais , em particular, frações. O projeto Frações , título principal desse trabalho, pretende atingir estudantes da Educação Básica e também educadores com a intenção de propor meios compreensíveis e atrativos do ensino da disciplina em questão. A metodologia empregada para a aprendizagem de números racionais na forma fracionária foi o exercício prático e lúdico envolvendo alunos de duas turmas do 6º ano do Ensino Fundamental da escola pública. A manipulação de materiais e a visualização de resultados concorrem para a construção do conhecimento da Matemática e, consequentemente, de seu aprendizado. As atividades e experimentações didáticas são a marca e o propulsor do desenvolvimento deste projeto dissertativo, pois ao empregar materiais manipuláveis (garrafas PET graduadas, funis e água) isto nos garante originalidade para a relação ensino/aprendizagem da Matemática. Os conceitos matemáticos como a equivalência e comparação entre frações e ainda as operações básicas (adição e subtração) circunscrevem, propositadamente, as sequências didáticas executadas no projeto educacional.

Perturbing Practices: A Case Study of the Effects of Virtual Manipulatives as Novel Didactic Objects on Rational Function Instruction

abstract: The advancement of technology has substantively changed the practices of numerous professions, including teaching. When an instructor first adopts a new technology, established classroom practices are perturbed. These perturbations can have positive and negative, large or small, and long- or short-term effects on instructors’ abilities to teach mathematical concepts with the new technology. Therefore, in order to better understand teaching with technology, we need to take a closer look at the adoption of new technology in a mathematics classroom. Using interviews and classroom observations, I explored perturbations in mathematical classroom practices as an instructor implemented virtual manipulatives as novel didactic objects in rational function instruction. In particular, the instructor used didactic objects that were designed to lay the foundation for developing a conceptual understanding of rational functions through the coordination of relative size of the value of the numerator in terms of the value of the denominator. Etude structurale des mécanismes de photoblanchiment des protéines fluorescentes photocommutables / Structural insight into photobleaching mechanisms of reversible photoswitchable fluorescent proteins

La découverte des Protéines Fluorescentes Phototransformables (PTFPs) issuesd’espèces anthozoaires a ouvert, grâce à leurs propriétés photophysiques particulières, unvaste champ d’investigation pour l'imagerie biologique de fluorescence. L'un des sousgroupesdes PTFPs est formé des protéines fluorescentes réversiblement photocommutables(RSFPs), qui peuvent être commutées réversiblement entre des états non-fluorescent etfluorescent. Le photoblanchiment est la perte définitive d’émission de fluorescence sousexcitation et est un phénomène commun à toutes les molécules fluorescentes. Lephotoblanchiment a un impact important sur la qualité des images de microscopie, notammenten imagerie de super-résolution. Les RSFPs ont tendance à perdre de leur performance àchaque cycle de commutation, un processus dénommé “photofatigue”. Notre intérêt est centrésur l'étude des mécanismes de photofatigue des RSFPs.Nous avons rapporté les structures cristallographiques d’IrisFP photoblanchie par uneforte et une basse intensité d’illumination à température ambiante ainsi que les modificationsspectroscopiques associées. Nos résultats démontrent que différentes intensités d'excitationpeuvent donner lieu à différentes voies de photoblanchiment. Sous faible intensité d'excitation,une voie de photoblanchiment dépendante de l'oxygène a été mise en évidence. Lesmodifications structurales induites par la production d'oxygène singulet à l'intérieur de lapoche du chromophore ont révélé l'oxydation de deux résidus soufrés, Met159 et Cys171,piégeant le chromophore dans un état protoné non-fluorescent. Sous haute intensitéd'excitation, une voie de photoblanchiment oxygène-indépendante totalement différente a ététrouvée. Le Glu212, strictement conservé, subit une décarboxylation associée à un importantréarrangement du réseau de liaisons hydrogènes autour du chromophore, et un changementd’hybridation sp2 vers sp3 du carbone reliant les cycles du chromophore est observé. En tantque résidu clé impliqué dans le photoblanchiment induit par faible intensité d'excitation, nousavons muté Met159 en alanine afin d'éviter une sulfoxydation. Nous avons trouvé que lemutant IrisFP-M159A démontre une photostabilité améliorée en solution, en gel PVA et dansdes cellules E. coli. / The discovery of phototransformable FPs (PTFPs) from Anthozoa species, thanks totheir photophysical properties, has opened a large field in biological fluorescence imaging.One of the PTFPs’ sub-groups consists of Reversible Photoswitchable Fluorescent Proteins(RSFPs), which can be reversibly switched between nonfluorescent and fluorescent states.Photobleaching is the permanent loss of the fluorescence-emitting capacity under excitation,which is a common phenomenon among all the fluorescent molecules. Photobleaching has alarge impact on the microscopy image quality, notably on super-resolution imaging.Photoswitchable fluorescent proteins have a tendency to lose performance within everyswitching cycle, a process referred to as “photofatigue”. Our interest of study is focused onthe photobleaching mechanisms of RSFPs.We have reported the crystallographic structure of photobleached IrisFP under highand low illumination intensity at room temperature as well as its spectroscopic modifications.We found that different illumination intensities can result in different photobleachingpathways. Under low illumination intensity, an oxygen-dependent photobleaching pathwaywas evidenced. Structural modifications induced by singlet-oxygen production within thechromophore pocket revealed the oxidation of two sulfur-containing residues, Met159 andCys171, locking the chromophore in a nonfluorescent protonated state. Under highillumination intensity, a completely different, oxygen-independent photobleaching pathwaywas found. The conserved Glu212 underwent decarboxylation concomitantly with anextensive rearrangement of the H-bond network around the chromophore, and an sp2-to-sp3hybridization change of the carbon atom bridging the chromophore cyclic moieties wasobserved. As Met159 is the key residue involved in low-intensity illumination photobleaching,we have then mutated Met159 into Alanine in order to avoid sulfoxidation. We found that theIrisFP-M159A mutant display an enhanced photostability in solution, in PVA gel and inE.coli cells.

Performance of defensive shares on the JSE during financial crisis: evidence from analysis of returns and volatility

This study analyses whether historically defensive sectors on the JSE have – with respect to the market – proven to be defensive during the recent global financial crisis. By withstanding the shocks of market volatility, defensive industries (such as pharmaceuticals and consumer staples) are renowned for their consistent performance throughout the business cycle. Using daily data for the period 2000–2009, the study compares the descriptive statistics of sector returns before and during the crisis. The volatility of each sector relative to the market index is calculated using the CAPM beta and a simplified volatility ratio. The same comparison is extended to the conditional volatilities of each of the sectors, which is estimated using the GARCH model and two of its extensions: the EGARCH and GJR GARCH models. While no sector experienced a positive mean return during the financial crisis, Healthcare, Consumer Goods, Consumer Services and Industrials all proved less volatile than the market. Surprisingly, Telecommunications proved more volatile than the market and experienced leverage effects during the financial crisis. Since the timing of a recession is difficult to predict, defensive securities were found to be a useful investment tool for protection against adverse movements in the stock market.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate drugs advertisings transmitted on radio stations in Natal/RN, from October 2007 to September 2008. Were collected 228 advertising pieces, where, 21 were different among themselves and corresponded to 15 drugs. The results showed that 73,3% of the drugs ads were announced on AM station and 26,7% on FM station. The majority of the drugs were constituted of analgesics (26%), following by antiacids, vitamins, phitotherapics (13% each). The legal analysis showed that each advertising had some kind of infraction. The omission of the registration number happened in each advertising, following by the totally lack of contraindications (95,2%) and contraindications DCB/DCI (76,2%). In 42,9% advertisements were observed the relation between drugs use and physique/intellectual/emotional/sexual performance and/or beauty and 33% of them had abusive exploration of illnesses. The obligatory warning was omitted in 28,6% and the offer of financial bonus happened in 9,5% cases. The content analysis demonstrated that the most persuasion and convincing elements observed were indicatives of consumption appeal (34,2%). The study indicates the necessity of the topic drugs advertisements to be treated in a wide context, that is, to be discussed as a public health concern. Although the advertising regulation and inspection is the State responsibility , this should be shared with the advertising agency, pharmaceutical industry and media. Furthermore, it is indispensable to inform and to conscience the population of their rights in such mistaken situation / A propaganda de medicamentos ? um dos principais recursos de marketing utilizados pela ind?stria farmac?utica a fim de persuadir as pessoas a comprarem esses produtos ainda que n?o tenham real necessidade de consumi-los. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar propagandas de medicamentos veiculadas em emissoras de r?dio, em Natal/RN, no per?odo de outubro de 2007 a setembro de 2008. Foram captadas 228 pe?as publicit?rias, das quais, 21 eram diferentes entre si e correspondiam a 15 medicamentos. Os resultados demonstraram que 73,3% dos medicamentos foram anunciados em emissoras AM e 26,7% em FM. A maioria dos medicamentos era constitu?da por analg?sicos (26%), seguindo-se os anti?cidos, vitaminas e fitoter?picos (13% cada). A an?lise legal demonstrou que todas as propagandas cometeram algum tipo de infra??o. A omiss?o do n?mero de registro ocorreu em todas as propagandas, seguindo-se a quase totalidade (95,2%) da aus?ncia das contra-indica??es e da DCB/DCI (76,2%). Resumo: A sociedade necessita de energia para o seu desenvolvimento econômico e social, mas o consumo de energia desenfreado que se acelerou nas últimas décadas, traz conflitos na relação entre o homem e o meio ambiente. Mudar este panorama requer uma melhoria contínua nos processos de transformação e mudanças nos hábitos de consumo. As possíveis formas de atuar junto à população concentram-se no desenvolvimento de programas sociais e principalmente na educação, o que requer mudanças de postura tanto do aluno como do professor. Buscando contribuir na questão do uso racional de energia elétrica na classe residencial foi realizada com a participação de alunos e professores de sete escolas da Região do Vale do Paraíba esta pesquisa que teve como objetivo conceber, desenvolver e avaliar uma proposta de intervenção em escolas de ensino médio utilizando a metodologia de Aprendizagem por Projetos. Foram realizados atividades de capacitação com os professores e programadas ações de interferência na realidade do aluno que, mediante a orientação destes professores, desenvolveram atividades voltadas para a economia de energia em suas residências. Para a constatação da eficiência da pesquisa foram utilizadas ferramentas de avaliação, tais como questionários, entrevistas, acompanhamento in loco e o monitoramento do consumo de energia elétrica das residências dos alunos envolvidos. Acredita-se que com esta pesquisa foi possível contribuir na questão do uso racional de energia, principalmente no entendimento de como trabalhar com alunos e professores de ensino médio com esta temática. / Abstract: The society needs energy for its economic and social development, but the consumption of energy in the last decades is increasing very fast, and conflicts in the relation between the man and the environment is appear. To change this scene it is required a continuous improvement in the transformation processes and changes in the consumption habits. The probable forms to act with the population are mainly in the development of social programs and in the education, what in such a way requires changes of atittude of the students as of the teachers. Looking in the question of the rational use of electric energy in the residential class, this research was carried through with the participation of students and teachers of seven schools of the Vale do Paraíba Region, which target was to conceive, to develop and to evaluate a proposal of intervention in high schools using the methodology of Project Based Learnig. Avaliação de programas de treinamento em manejo racional de bovinos em frigoríficos para melhoria do bem-estar animal

Os comportamentos de humanos e bovinos foram estudados em três frigoríficos durante o desenvolvimento de dois processos: 1) condução dos bovinos dos currais de espera até o boxe de atordoamento e 2) atordoamento. Nas avaliações do processo de condução dos animais foram acompanhados 31, 22 e 18 lotes de animais antes do treinamento nos frigoríficos MT, GO e SP, respectivamente, repetindo-se o mesmo número de lotes após o treinamento. Foram registradas duas variáveis do comportamento humano durante a condução dos animais (uso do bastão elétrico e uso inadequado da bandeira) e três do comportamento bovino (escorregões, quedas e vocalizações). Durante o processo de atordoamento foram consideradas duas variáveis, a eficiência de atordoamento (sendo observados 336, 475 e 314 animais nos frigoríficos MS, GO e SP, respectivamente, em cada etapa, antes e após o treinamento) e sinais de insensibilidade (com 400, 453 e 308 animais nos frigoríficos MS, GO e SP, respectivamente, em cada etapa). Os dados sobre a condução dos bovinos foram analisados usando-se Anova com o procedimento GLM e para as variáveis de atordoamento foi utilizado o Teste de Kruskall-Wallis. Houve diferenças significativas (P<0,01) entre frigoríficos nas variáveis escorregões, quedas, uso do bastão elétrico e sinais de insensibilidade. Também houve efeito significativo do treinamento para a maioria das variáveis estudadas, sendo que o maior efeito foi no uso do bastão elétrico, que diminuiu nos três frigoríficos após o treinamento. Os resultados indicaram que os frigoríficos que realizaram investimentos em mão de obra e instalações, atingiram melhor resposta ao treinamento dos funcionários. / The objectives of this research were to study the effects of rational handling training programs on cattle welfare and to test the practical feasibility of the rational handling in the slaughterhouse. The human and cattle behaviours were recorded in three slaughterhouses during two processes: 1) leading cattle from lairage to stunning boxes and 2) stunning cattle. In order to assess the handling procedures during the first process we studied 31, 22 and 18 groups of cattle, before and after the training activity, in three slaughterhouses (MT, GO and SP); in this process five variables were considered, two of them related to human behaviour (the frequency of electric prod and the frequency of inadequate flag use) and three related to cattle behaviour (the frequencies of slips, falls and vocalizations). For the assessment of the stunning process two variables were defined: stunning efficiency (with 336, 475 and 314 cattle observed before and after the training period) and insensitiveness (with 400, 453, and 308 animals observed before and after training). Analysis of variance was used for data related to the process of driving the animals to the stunning box and the Kruskall- Wallis test was used when for the variables related to the stunning process. Significant statistical differences were found among slaughterhouses for the frequencies of slips, falls, use of the electric prod and insensitiveness. Similar results were found when considered the effects of training, being the major effect on the frequency of electric prod use, which dropped down in three slaughterhouses. Inadequate facilities and equipments promoted depreciation on the labour, increasing the frequencies of slips, falls and in the number of sensitive animals after stunning. The results suggested that the slaughterhouses that did invest in people, training, facilities and equipments achieved a better result in the improvement of animal welfare.

This thesis presents comprehensive study material relating the subject of rational numbers for students trained to be teachers at primary school. I am mainly concentrating on qualities of racional numbers and their methodology in the theoretic part. I am checking the level of school knowledge in the subject of racional numbers in the operative part. I was concentrated on pupils at 2nd and 4th classes of Primary School in Choustník and on students of the pedagogical faculty at South Bohemia University in České Budějovice. Task collection for students trained to be teachers at primary school and also for teachers in profession is part of my thesis.
