Contribution à l’élaboration d’un procédé de valorisation des cendres volantes et des résidus d’épuration des fumées d’incinération d’ordures ménagères/Valorisation of municipal solid waste incineration fly ashes and air pollution control residues

De Boom, Aurore 04 November 2009 (has links)
Municipal Solid Waste Incineration (MSWI) fly ashes and Air Pollution Control (APC) residues are considered as hazardous waste according to the limits for the acceptance of waste at landfills, because high amounts of chlorides and heavy metals leach from the solids when those are in contact with water. These residues have thus to be treated before they can be accepted in landfill. Several treatments aim to limit the leaching of the residues. Beside these treatments, some research works go further the treatment and consider the valorisation of MSWI fly ashes and APC residues, e.a. in cementitious materials. The present work follows the new trend and aims to build up a process that combines treatment and valorisation of MSWI fly ashes and APC residues. MSWI fly ashes and APC residues come from the devices encountered by the flue gases from waste incineration. The residues composition differs according to their origin. It seems thus essential to consider each type of residues separately and to develop the treatment only on one sort of residue. Boiler Fly Ashes (BFA) were chosen because they exist in every modern MSWI plant. The BFA treatment is based on the extraction of valorisable fractions and on the separation of contaminated fractions, which makes the final residues less hazardous; these final residues would then be acceptable in landfill, or, even better, be valorisable. A magnetic sorting extracts ~10% (wt.) of BFA; however, such a separation would not be useful in a treatment process because the magnetic particles contain some impurities (non magnetic particles) and the final residue is still hazardous. The repartition of the elements according to the particles size has been studied on BFA. It seems interesting to separate the BFA at 38 µm by a wet sieving process using a dense solution. The lower fraction presents a higher contamination in Pb (soluble) than the larger. Consequently, the first step of the BFA treatment consists of a wet sieving. Washing steps follow the sieving and aim to extract soluble salts (chlorides, heavy metals). These washings work in a counter-current way to optimise the use of water. The solutions are recycled in the process, which implies the absence of liquid effluents. A precipitation step of some metallic compounds (PbS in this case) is foreseen after the washing of the lower fraction. The BFA treatment process would produce decontaminated sludge and coarse fractions, salts and metallic compounds. Some steps of the process have been investigated at lab-scale; further studies are necessary to optimise each step, to understand the observed reactions and to guarantee valorisation channels.

Line-Managers' Perceptio of Change at Ericsson : A study of the process and effects of a re-organization

Nilsson, Elin, Axelsson, Matilda, Sörberg, Sigrid January 2008 (has links)
Problem: In order to keep up with the vast changes in the telecom industry, stay competitive and gain efficiency, Ericsson implemented a major re-organization in January 2007. The changes had large effects on the line-managers and their direct groups, proposing many critical issues regarding the implantation process and effects of the re-organization. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to carry out an analysis of how the implementation process of the re-organization at Ericsson was conducted. Also, how the outcomes of the new organizational design as well as the characteristics of the changes affected the line-managers. Method: Overall, a qualitative approach to research was chosen for this specific case-study. A total of 19 in-depth interviews were conducted with affected line-managers on four different locations and additional interviews with people in other positions were done in order to gain other perspectives of the changes. Issues of reliability, validity, objectivity and generalizability were approached in order to ensure an optimal methodology of this study. Result: The re-organization within Ericsson lead to a new focus in their matrix structure, moving from being product-based to competence-based. Generally, it was found that the changes were perceived differently in all four geographical sites but common for all is the confusion and mixed opinions regarding why the changes were conducted. Moreover, a strong corporate culture has lead to extremely high loyalty towards the organization. Conclusion: This study has led to many implications; theoretical, methodological and managerial. Some of the advice from the authors to Ericsson is to improve information and timing of change. Also, they must embrace and allow people to add input to the changes. Finally, the issue of knowledge transfer should be stressed in order to secure in-house competences.

Competing Image Vernaculars in the Anti-lynching Movement of the 1930's

Perry, Samuel P 08 July 2011 (has links)
Lynching photographs and images of spectacle lynching were originally produced to commemorate and celebrate lynching. Through processes of rhetorical re-circulation and repurposing of lynching photographs by those in the anti-lynching movement, lynching and visual representations of it became socially unacceptable. The rhetorical strategies concerning the display of images of violence toward African Americans developed in the anti-lynching movement became one of the most important means of protesting civil rights violations in the United States. This study examines three cases of repurposing lynching photographs during the peak of the anti-lynching movement in the 1930’s. The first is the NAACP sponsored Art Commentary on Lynching. I examine four pieces of art in this exhibition that violate the conventions of lynching photography by representing the lynching in other visual mediums that allow the artists to manipulate the lynching scene. The second chapter examines the generation and circulation of an anti-lynching pamphlet featuring a photograph of the lynching of Rubin Stacy. The photograph is repurposed through the interaction of text and image in the pamphlet in a series of rhetorical questions, details of the case, and general information about lynching. The third case is the song, “Strange Fruit.” The song conjures an image through its use of ekphrasis, and suggests a particular reading of that image throughout the performance of the song. I focus on Billie Holiday’s rendition of the song, but draw conclusions about the song and its various performances and recordings. I argue that the use and manipulation of lynching photographs raised social consciousness and public awareness in opposition to spectacle lynching, and re-articulated the meaning of violence, and representations of violence, toward African Americans in the public sphere.

Intuitive Mission Handling with Automatic Route Re-planning using Model Predictive Control / Intuitiv uppdragshantering med modellbaserad prediktionsreglering för automatisk ruttomplanering

Andersson, Emma January 2012 (has links)
The system for mission handling in the Gripen fighter aircraft, and in its ground supporting system, consists for example of ways to plan mission routes, create mission points and validate performed missions. The system is complex and for example, the number of different mission points used increases due to changing demands and needs. This master thesis presents suggestions for improvements and simplifications for the mission handling system, to make it more intuitive and more friendly to use. As a base for the suggestions, interviews with pilots from Saab, TUJAS and FMV have been conducted, this is to obtain opinions and ideas from those using the system and have deep knowledge about it. Another possible assistance and improvement is to provide the possibility of on-line automatic re-planning of the mission route in case of obstacles. MPC (Model Predictive Control) has been used to estimate the obstacle’s flight path, and calculate a new route to the next mission point which does not conflict with the estimated enemy’s path. This system has been implemented in Matlab and the concept is demonstrated with different test scenarios where the design parameters (prediction horizon and penalty in the cost function) for the controller are varied, and stationary and moving obstacles are induced.

Salvage Montage

da Silva, Catia Marisa Costa 31 August 2009 (has links)
This thesis proposes a reinterpretation of assumptions towards material value. It is a positive argument in favour of adaptive re-use, not only as a means to divert waste but also as encouragement to reconsider our current habits of consumption. This paper promotes a discussion of our current environmental predicament rather then a one-sided statement and acts as a guide to re-evaluate our sense of value. This dissertation puts forward design solutions and alternatives to certain materials that are part of our everyday lives. The design projects herein adapt existing objects into ordinary household items, as an intended gesture of nostalgia toward the object’s previous form, while at the same time, taking on a raw elegance of aesthetic quality: the projects are raw in their material origins and elegant in their form and function. This work is intended to evolve into an ongoing discussion of salvaged material as a response to problems of consumption and waste, as well as to highlight an ongoing process of design.

Simulation of rerouting incentives for improved travel corridor performance

Fitzthum, Anton January 2012 (has links)
Congestion on the road is identified as a severe threat to nations’ economy. To address this problem, in the past the capacity of existing infrastructure is increased by building new roads. But as history has shown, it is not only an expensive and unsustainable, but also not an efficient way of dealing with this problem. Alternatively, by identifying underutilized links, for example, in the form of parallel routes, the already existing infrastructure can often be used more efficient. This thesis focuses on the development of a framework to simulate re-routing incentives to enable an improved travel corridor performance. Thus, the effects of providing traveler information and tendering mometary incentives on a concidor’s traffic flow are investigated. The aim is to show that by changing the route choice behavior of a certain percentage of the fleet, the overall performance of the existing corridor can be increased. By using the microscopic traffic simulation tool VISSIM in combination with dynamic traffic modeling, numerous scenarios are simulated. By gradually increasing the amount of users who get access to the incentive scheme, the impacts of the penetration get analyzed as well. Based on a network stretch located in California, United States, the simulation model is developed. Using this model, three different scenarios are investigated in detail: a No Incident scenario, a Construction Work scenario and an Accident scenario. Finally, a comprehensive analysis of the simulation results takes place. It mainly focuses on the indicator travel time to discuss the impacts on the corridor performance. Interpreting the achieved simulation results, it can be stated that already small penetration rates have the potential for a significant increase of the corridor performance. To be able to optimize the corridor’s performance, free capacity on detours – especially  at bottlenecks like ramps – has to be available. Nevertheless, in case of high penetration rates, straightforward broadcasting of incentives is not an option.

Återbruk av formgivet material : Juridiska och moraliska perspektiv

Eskilsson, Lina January 2011 (has links)

US re-engagement? - a study of central elements that will increase a US inclination to participate in a post-Kyoto agreement

Jensen, Malene January 2007 (has links)
The United States is the single largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Its engagement is therefore critical to the success of any international effort to prevent man-made global climate change. It was therefore a huge step-back for the international community when President Bush soon after taking office in 2001 rejected the Kyoto Protocol. Despite a strong opposition the international community did not convince the Bush administration to reconsider its decision and re-engage in the Kyoto Protocol process. The objective of this thesis is to investigate which central elements that will increase a US inclination to participate in international agreements after the first commitment period in the Kyoto Protocol. These elements were found through a literature study of four peer-reviewed articles and an empirical analysis of four international partnership agreements. The overall conclusion is that there are several central elements that could increase a US inclination to participate in international agreements after the first commitment period in the Kyoto Protocol. These elements cover a wide range of disciplines from technology over research and development to business interests.

Hotai Motor Transformation

Lin, Hua-Chiang 20 August 2010 (has links)
Abstract This thesis, from the case-study point of view, demonstrates Hotai Motor¡¦s business reformation in its half-century history, including issues such as visions, business philosophy, values, missions, strategies and performance management. Hotai, the automobile company greeted its fiftieth anniversary in 1997, extends its business to a wide range, selling vehicles like Toyota¡BHINO¡BLexus¡Bconstruction motors and fire engines¡BMobil lubricants and vehicle maintenance services, and hiring 1,000 employees, or 10,000 if includes the upper- and down- stream businesses. After running the corporation for half a century, the management team was thinking of a new business value and reengineering for the upcoming decades. Hotai¡¦s ups and downs were bound tightly with government policies. Established in the 1940¡¦s, it has gone through the import control in 1950¡¦s, the CTOC import control policy in the late 1060¡¦s, the overall ban of Japanese vehicles in the 1970¡¦s, the Hwa-ton Motors investment in the 1980¡¦s, and finally took over Hwa-ton and transformed it to Kuozui Motors. Producing heavy vehicle at first, the company added home sedans to its product list in 1985, and has been going forward steadily ever since. This thesis will focus on how this company redefines itself to find the strength to re-start. Promoting the core value of service ¢w ¡§give more than expected¡¨, and strategies reaching multiple dimensions such as business models, products, services, recruiting, branching policy and hidden risks, ensures the strength to the business structure. Process reengineering was a popular issue and was introduces to major corporations in the 90¡¦s; unfortunately, 70% of them failed. Experts found that besides the neglect of the feasibility of business models and strategies, the major key of the failure was the deficiency of communication during reforming. In the Hotai case, communication has never stopped happening inside the whole organization, from top through bottom, from visions to strategies, which makes an excellent example for corporation reformation and change management. Keywords: Hotai Motor, Re-start, Transformation, Reengineering, Change Management.
