Referências europeias de arquitetura e urbanismo nas origens da produção de habitação de interesse social no Brasil (1930-1964) / European references of architecture and urbanism at the origins of the production of social housing in Brazil (1930-1964)Sálua Kairuz Manoel Poleto 10 May 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to identify and analyze major European references in Brazilian production of housing promoted by the government at the federal level in the pre-BNH, specifically, the National Institutes of Retirement and Pension (IAP\'s), Popular Housing Foundation (FCP) and the main local initiatives proposed at the time, the Federal District Department of Housing (PHD). From a wide field survey initiated by the research \"Housing and Economic Modern Architecture in Brazil (1930-1964)\", developed by FAU-USP and USP-EESC , concluded through research \"Pioneers of Social Housing in Brazil\" coordinated by Prof. Dr. Nabil Bonduki, we were able to identify references and establish dialogue with the different lines of modern architecture in the production of economical housing in Europe between 1920 and 1930, and other concurrent streams, as the garden city movement and its various interpretations. With the selection of international initiatives enshrined in the literature, it was possible to analyze the national production in the face of these experiences, identifying the different facets of production in Brazil, as it was possible to understand how the process of construction of housing policy and the resulting production are inseparable the issue of social housing. The approach of international production has also revealed other facets of uncertainty with the housing issue were handled by the Brazilian state in the period, and the results of this stance.

Domestication Norms in French and Swedish : A Comparative Study of SubtitlesEricson, Nanna January 2010 (has links)
France has long had its foreign audiovisual material dubbed. If this is due to an attempt to conserve the French language, there should also be similar concern with foreign cultural references. This essay uses qualitative analyses of extralinguistic references to discover if a so-called domesticating practice is notable also in French subtitling. Sweden, however, is a smaller country, and may be considered more Americanized culturally. Swedish subtitling is used as the more globalized counterpart. This research cites instances in which extralinguistic references are made and how they are subsequently dealt with in the translated subtitles. The instances are singled out and then individually analyzed. Using four categories of translation methods for Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs), this study investigates whether translation norms differ between Swedish and French subtitles. This study‘s most important finding is that there do seem to be different norms for Swedish and French subtitles and that the francophone target audience is not required to move so far from its domestic reference frame as is the Swedish target audience. Another important finding is that while there are both quantitative and qualitative differences, there are also striking similarities on the statistical level, indicating that there are global norms that govern translation in general, and specifically subtitling. The results are interesting for the discussion around which ECRs are domesticated, but also for further sociolinguistic analyses of French domestication.

Translating American food culture from English to Swedish : A study of cultural references in translationNyrén, Jenny January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this paper is to analyze the different solutions used when translating cultural references. The source text is an extract from The Omnivore’s Dilemma. A Natural History of Four Meals (2006), written by Michael Pollan, and the material that this study is based on is taken from that text, as well as from my translation of that extract. The theme of the book is American food culture from various perspectives, which results in a culturally specific text. The cultural references in this study regard phenomena such as food-related items, geographical places and names, etc. In the translation of these cultural references, I used a combination of methods. The strategies used were Ingo’s complementary addition, Vinay and Darbelnet’s equivalence and adaptation, as well as Newmark’s transference. The analysis of the translation showed that the most used strategy was transference, which was expected considering that the purpose of the text is to present American food culture and the ambition and aim of the translation was to keep as many cultural references as possible in the target text. One conclusion that could be drawn from the study was that the purpose of the text and the intended TT reader are main factors when deciding how to translate cultural references.

Concurrency, references and linear logic / Concurrences, Références et Logique LinéaireHamdaoui, Yann 25 September 2018 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is the study of the encoding of references andconcurrency in Linear Logic. Our perspective is to demonstrate the capabilityof Linear Logic to encode side-effects to make it a viable, formalized and wellstudied compilation target for functional languages in the future. The keynotion we develop is that of routing areas: a family of proof nets whichcorrespond to a fragment of differential linear logic and which implementscommunication primitives. We develop routing areas as a parametrizable deviceand study their theory. We then illustrate their expressivity by translating aconcurrent λ-calculus featuring concurrency, references and replication to afragment of differential nets. To this purpose, we introduce a language akin toAmadio’s concurrent λ-calculus, but with explicit substitutions for bothvariables and references. We endow this language with a type and effect systemand we prove termination of well-typed terms by a mix of reducibility and anew interactive technique. This intermediate language allows us to prove asimulation and an adequacy theorem for the translation

Robert Schumann: Novelletten, Opus 21, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of L.v. Beethoven, R. Schumann, J. Brahms, and E. GranadosBlaine, William 05 1900 (has links)
The Novelletten of Robert Schumann stand out as unusual among his works for solo piano. It is the largest cycle of character pieces in his output and has other distinguishing features. One unusual aspect of the work is its abundance of literary references which Schumann revealed at various points when it was being composed. This is an aspect unique to this cycle since Schumann's other cycles refer to a single literary source. One of the purposes of this paper is to discuss these numerous literary references which have never been examined in any detail before. Present in the Novelletten is a use of musical motives from works of his wife Clara. There are also musical references to other composers such as Beethoven and Haydn. This quoting of himself and others is not an uncommon practice for Schumann but here, in context with remarks made by Schumann himself about the work, the nature of his use of these musical references becomes more transparent. One of the main points being made through this discussion of literary and musical references in the Novelletten is that partly through these elements the work is unified into an eight movement cycle.

THE UNDULATING SUMMER HOUSELuckhurst, Julian January 2022 (has links)
This thesis project has been an investigation of the summer house phenomena, both from an historical point of view - the background and history of summer houses - looking at the emergence of the culture, their architectural programmatic experience, how they’ve change over time, as well as looking into specific reference projects, both for inspiration and clarity - some older houses, and others that are more modern. In addition to the research, and as the main part of the thesis project I have aimed to design a new small summer house of my own, to be placed on the small island in Mälaren where my family's current house is situated and where I have grown up, by using the knowledge I’ve gathered and the inspiration I have come across in order to create a project different from the one that is there today.

Reducing Vale's Memory Management Overhead Through Static AnalysisWatkins, Theodore C 01 June 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Vale is a multi-purpose programming language that focuses on guaranteeing memory safety with minimal effect on performance. To accomplish this, Vale utilizes a memory management system called Hybrid Generational Memory (HGM). HGM uses generational references to track the state of objects in memory, and static analysis to reduce memory management overhead at runtime. This thesis describes the program that performs static analysis on Vale source code during compilation, and analyzes its effect on the performance of Vale programs.
