Where Are They Now: A Study to Identify Departments Managing Institutional Repositories

Sergiadis, Ashley D.R. 12 April 2019 (has links)
Academic libraries are at various stages of implementing institutional repositories (IRs) and related services at their institutions. In relation, the management of IRs are not uniformly managed by the same department in each library. This poster displays the results of a study that examined academic library websites to determine which departments mentioned IRs as part of their services and/or IR employees as part of their staff. Come and discover where IRs are being managed in academic libraries and how the results differ based on Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education.

Linking Developer Experience with Lambda and Smart Pointer Usage

Roos, Marcus, Karlsson, Alexander January 2022 (has links)
Assessing developer’s experience and proficiency haslong been a tough task for recruiters to tackle properly. Afunctional programming concept known as lambdas has been proven to be an indicator of more experienced developers. Previous existing studies also showed that GitHub repositories with more experienced developers use lambda functions to a greater extent. Previous research raises the question of whether other functional programming concepts such as smart pointers can be a potential indicator of a developer’s experience. To the best of our knowledge, no attempts have been made to link lambda or smart pointer usage to the individual GitHub developer’s experience level. This thesis aims to address this gap and investigate if lambda or smart pointers be linked to an individual developer’s experience level. To achieve this, we propose a new metric called User Repository Experience (URE), which will rank the developers within a repository in different percentiles. We also developed a tool that analyze the commits found in GitHub repositories, locates lambda and smart pointers and links them to the URE metric, this data is then saved to a log file. We designed a second tool that parses the log files and then prints the data in a readable format. The results from this study showed that lambda and smart pointers are both valid and promising indicators of experience, and thus the URE is a potential metric for representing more experienced developers.

The exponential increase in the production of scientific data and information is directly associated with the evolution of digital information and communication technologies and, in view of this scenario, it is noticed the need for institutions to implement digital information environments that can bring them together, organize them, disseminate and preserve them. Institutional repositories, objects of study of this research, are potential environments for such actions; its implementation, however, must meet the information needs of its target audience, making it necessary to apply methods, techniques and attributes that promote the finding of scientific information. With the objective of verifying that institutional repositories have been implemented based on attributes that enable information to be found by information subjects, this study uses as reference the institutional repositories of the three state universities of the state of São Paulo - USP, UNESP and UNICAMP. In order to achieve the objectives of the research, the four-pole method is used, which allows dynamicity and flexibility for the development of the study through its four poles: epistemological, theoretical, technical and morphological. The epistemological pole addressed the post-custodial paradigm of Information Science and Post-Phenomenology to support the study, epistemologically. The theoretical pole allowed the search for contributions related to the themes that permeate the research object, namely: Digital Repositories, with emphasis on Institutional Repositories, DSpace as technology for implementation, and Information Findability. The technical pole evidences the methodological procedures for carrying out the study: bibliographical research and literature review to address the epistemological and theoretical foundations mentioned, as well as applied research, which occurred in two phases, the first being the application of the "Checklist for evaluation of Information Finding in Institutional Repositories "in the institutional repositories of USP, UNESP and UNICAMP, through the observation technique, and the second refers to the application of tasks to the masters of the Graduate Programs in Education and Speech-Language Pathology of UNESP of Marília, from the eye-tracking technology, in the three repositories, being executed, along with the technique of verbal protocol and, later, interviews. The morphological pole is intended to present the results of the research, as well as to the proposed recommendations for the institutional repositories analyzed. From the evaluation with the checklist, the results revealed problems related to the attributes Folksonomy, Information Discovery and Accessibility and Usability, in the three repositories. In at least one of them, problems were observed with the attributes: Navigational Taxonomies, Mediation of Information Professionals and Mobility, Convergence and Ubiquity. Considering the limitations of this technique of data collection, it was not possible to evaluate the attributes of terminological control instruments, intentionality and mediation of computer scientists. In a second moment, it was possible to evaluate the attribute of Information Discovery with eye-tracking technology. After the evaluations, ten information retrieval recommendations were generated for institutional repositories. / CAPES: 1660180

Faculty Attitudes Towards Institutional Repositories

Hall, Nathan F. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore faculty attitudes towards institutional repositories in order to better understand their research habits and preferences. A better understanding of faculty needs and attitudes will enable academic libraries to improve institutional repository services and policies. A phenomenological approach was used to interview fourteen participants and conduct eight observations to determine how tenure-track faculty want to disseminate their research as well as their attitudes towards sharing research data. Interviews were transcribed and coded into emerging themes. Participants reported that they want their research to be read, used, and to have an impact. While almost all faculty see institutional repositories as something that would be useful for increasing the impact and accessibility of their research, they would consider publishers’ rights before depositing work in a repository. Researchers with quantitative data, and researchers in the humanities are more likely to share data than with qualitative or mixed data, which is more open to interpretation and inference. Senior faculty members are more likely than junior faculty members to be concerned about the context of their research data. Junior faculty members’ perception’ of requirements for tenure will inhibit their inclination to publish in open access journals, or share data. The study used a novel approach to provide an understanding of faculty attitudes and the structural functionalism of scholarly communication.

Factors Affecting Faculty Acceptance and Use of Institutional Repositories in Thailand

Ammarukleart, Sujira 05 1900 (has links)
Institutional repositories have been introduced as an innovative and alternative technology for scholarly communication and have received considerable attention from scholars across disciplines and around the globe. While some universities in Thailand have developed and implemented institutional repositories for nearly a decade, knowledge of the acceptance and use of institutional repositories on the individual level in the country remains limited. As an insufficient knowledge of technology acceptance and adoption at the individual level is considered partially responsible for the underutilization of innovation or of information system implementation, this study seeks to uncover knowledge regarding the level of institutional repository acceptance and use. This study applied the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model and the model of faculty members' self-archiving behavior to investigate factors affecting faculty acceptance and use of university-based institutional repositories. The study employed a mixed methods approach involving a survey followed by semi-structured, one-to-one interview. This study confirms that the success of university-based institutional repositories depends not on a single factor but on multiple factors. The results of the study show that performance expectancy, social influence, and resistance to change were direct determinants of faculty members' intention to use institutional repositories. Additionally, behavioral intention and altruism were found to be the main determinants of actual usage behavior. The findings of this study imply that education in and promotion of open access and institutional repositories are essential and can play an important role in the adoption of institutional repositories. Finally, this study suggests that sustained dialogue and collaborative efforts among faculty members (as contributors and users), libraries/librarians (as institutional repository developers and managers), and other stakeholders within communities are essential for the adoption and success of university-based institutional repositories.

Archival institutions are constantly challenged to update the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to reliably organize, preserve and provide their document collections that are generated in large quantity and in different media. Currently, the archival collections are hybrids, ie they are composed of documents that were originally digital, converted to digital, and analog. This requires that the institutions optimize their services, especially as regards to service to the user who aims to have his / her information needs satisfied easily, quickly and safely. In this scenario, the objective of this study is to analyze the set of essential attributes for the deployment of Trusted Digital Archival Repositories (TDARs) and the linking of the archivist as a member of a work team in guiding the requirements with emphasis on access to information. The methodological procedure was chosen by theoretical study grounded on the principles of Archivology. The exploratory stage is carried out from the analysis of Resolution 39 of CONARQ (Guidelines for the implementation of Trusted Digital Archival Repositories TDARs) and ISO 16363: 2012 (Space data and information transfer systems - Audit and certification of trustworthy digital repositories) that make technical recommendations used as a basis for digital repositories being certified as reliable or allow the measurement of repository reliability. The results present the archivist's actions for access to archival documents and information and the comparison between ISO 16363: 2012 and Recommendation 39 of CONARQ. Thus, the study resulted in a set of recommendations for certification of Digital Archival Repositories with a focus on identifying requirements with an emphasis on access to information. Finally, a set of information is presented so that the archivist can measure reliability of the certification of a digital repository or ask for its reliability certification.

The Preservation of Digital Objects in German Repositories / Die Archivierung digitaler Objekte in deutschen Repositorien: Drei Fallstudien

Recker, Astrid 19 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Taking its cue from the increasing amount of digital content deposited into institutional and subject repositories as well as the open question of repositories' role in long-term preservation, this study presents case studies of three German institutional and subject repositories all of which are in a different stage of establishing a (cooperative) framework for the long-term preservation of their digital collections. Drawing on different sets of criteria for trustworthy repositories, it is investigated which strategies the selected repositories pursue to preserve the digital assets in their collections, and how these strategies are implemented with the help of both human repository staff and the repository software used. The following repositories are considered: pedocs (Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung), JUWEL (Forschungszentrum Jülich), and Qucosa (SLUB Dresden). In that the latter can be regarded as examples for common types of (German) repositories, the results of this study might on the one hand serve as a guideline for repositories that intend, similar to the ones described here, to explore questions of long-term preservation in the near future, or are even taking their first concrete steps in this field. On the other hand, it is hoped that this work can at least give some hints as to the stage and status of long-term preservation in the German repository landscape.

Repositórios de recursos educacionais livres : desafios para implantação em instituições públicas de ensino superior (IPES) a partir da perspectiva de professores conteudistas em EaD / Repositoriesof free educational resources: challenges of deployment in public institutions of higher education (PIHE) through the perspective of e-learning teachers responsible for prepare educational content

Nysia Oliveira de Sá 21 November 2013 (has links)
Busca-se, assim, expandir os RREL de maneira compartilhada com vistas à inovação e ao aprimoramento da educação superior no país / The distributive architecture of Internet expands the possibilities for production and transmission of open educational resources (OER). Therefore, we adopt a qualitative research and the interview, as data collection. Based on the set of responses from teachers, analyzed using the technique of content analysis, are prepared recommendations for implementation and expansion OCR in higher education. From the scope of government the results show following needs: a) to encourage the adoption of open licenses for the development of OER, b) to promote public investments for the development of research in this area and c) to invest in deploying computing infrastructure and adequate network at national level. ; on institutional dimension we pointed out: a)to promote broad discussion in order to develop guidelines for policy formulation to implementation of OCR and b) to develop incentive programs and benefits for teaching academic progression and on informational dimension we observed: a) to stimulate collaborative work with the establishment of a multidisciplinary team and b) to include universities libraries in content management .Thus the aim is to expand RREL in a shared view in order to innovate and improve the higher education in the country
