Buyer purchase behavior in the reregulated market for OTC drugs in Sweden

Leal, Fabiana, Lindh, Jacob, Paciorek, Olivia January 2011 (has links)
Purpose The objective of this study is to investigate how the reregulation affected the decision making process of buyers of OTC drugs, and to identify determinants for how a buyer chooses to obtain OTC drugs in the reregulated Swedish pharmacy market. Furthermore this study aims to map out buyers’ purchases of OTC drugs as well as their impressions about the reregulation of the Swedish pharmacy market Background The Swedish pharmacy market was opened up for competition the 1 July 2009. On 1 November 2009, private pharmacies are allowed in the market, as well non-pharmacy retailers can commercialize OTC drugs. Thus due to the reregulation of the pharmacy market, consumers and retailers face a different market situation, since the amount of retailer selling OTC drugs has increased. This study investigates how buyers’ purchase behavior of OTC was affected by the end of the pharmacy monopoly. Method The purpose of this thesis was achieved by using a mixed-method approach. The qualitative method in the form of interviews and the quantitative method by conducting a survey. The mixed-method was used in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of consumer decision-making process as well as attitude and impression about the reregulation of the Swedish pharmacy market. Conclusion Buyers are in general satisfied with the reregulation of the Swedish pharmacy market. However, the positive attitude towards the reregulation does not necessarily mean a change in purchase behavior for OTC drugs. The decision making process is found to be dependent on the level of experience the buyer possesses with the needed OTC drug, as well as the type of need the buyer experiences, thus three determinants for the decision making process of OTC drugs were found. The frequency of purchase is connected to the gender and age group of the buyer. Also the majority of the researched buyers already had experienced the purchase of OTC drugs in store other than pharmacies. The buyers that never purchase OTC drugs in other retailers are in general open to the possibility of taking advantage of those stores.

Value creation in a reregulatedmarket : Divestments, firms, and dynamic processes

Hartgers, Richard January 2015 (has links)
This thesis makes use of the unique reregulation of pharmaceutical monopoly in Sweden to critically examine intraindustry firm heterogeneity. It contributes to existing divestiture research as it studies the dynamism in between reconfigurations of value constellations and its effects on value creation of divested pharmacies. Because the findings showed that the predominant theory of intraindustry firm heterogeneity could not explain firm performance, the value constellation concept was applied as it captured the phenomena. A patterned finding informed how reconfigurations of value constellations in a reregulated market characterized by strict rules, regulations, and high competition did not generate additional value for firms on short term. My study unveils that value creation is hampered in situations where rules and regulations significantly affect firms’ ability to reconfigure their value constellations. The key practical implication is an alternative perspective on fundamental aspects of the reregulation and how policy-makers may impede firm performance and the intended creation of new value for not only firms but for society as a whole. /
Grade: A

Omregleringen av det svenska apoteksmonopolet : Finns det teoretiskt och historiskt stöd för att regeringens mål kommer att uppfyllas? / The reregulation of the Swedish pharmacy monopoly : Does theory and history support that the governments goals will be fulfilled?

Svanborg, Maria, Nordfeldt, Johan January 2010 (has links)
Research Question: Does the pharmacy market seem to change in accordance with the goals stipulated by the government due to the reregulation? This leads to the following sub-questions: Does it seem like the availability of medical drugs for consumers increase? Does it seem like service for consumers get enhanced? Does it seem like the supply of services for consumers increase? Does it seem like the costs of medical drugs are maintained? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate if the trends resulting from the reregulation of the pharmacy monopoly correspond to the goals stipulated by the government. The purpose is furthermore to compare the reregulation of other Swedish markets and the reregulation of the pharmacy market in other Nordic countries in order to heed their lessons. Method: This study uses method triangulation, with a questionnaire directed to pharmacy customers forming the quantitative basis and interviews with specialists regarding the pharmacy market, forming the qualitative. The study also draws heavily on historic data regarding reregulation of Swedish markets and reregulation of the pharmacy market in other Nordic countries. Conclusions: Availability of medical drugs has increased and will presumably continue to do so. Service quality has increased somewhat and will presumably continue to do so. Supply of services has increased and it will presumably continue to do so. The cost of medical drugs will only increase if it is required in order to satisfy the other goals.

Tillsammans bemästrar vi förändringarna : En studie kring anställdas upplevelser av den svenska apoteksmarknadens omreglering / Together We Master the Changes : A Study of Employees' Experiences of the Swedish Pharmacy Market Reregulation

Flintberg, Johanna January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the employees have experienced the reregulation of the pharmacy market, and how the changes have affected them. The essay deals with reregulation by critically examining the foremost prominent impact on the workers, how they were handled and what the motivation factors that formed the basis during the change. The underlying reason for why I have chosen to study how the employees experienced the reregulation of the pharmacy market, is because the research on how employees are affected by deregulation, reregulation and liberalization of markets has not yet been explored in Sweden. The empirical material that is based on the study is collected from two pharmacy companies in Värmland, where the interviewed respondents worked and are still working in the pharmacy companies that have been bought by new owners. The selection of respondents was made by telephone contact and requests for staff that would be willing to do an interview. The material is then analyzed through theories related to the fields of change management, motivation, and psychosocial work environment. The results and conclusions of the study show that the pharmacy market reregulation contributed to the impact on employees regarding increased demands at work, stress, and some concern about increased competition in the labour market on how job security will be affected in the future. The change was also felt to contribute to enhanced opportunities for further development of work, increased responsibility and powers of new challenges, which is considered uplifting. To manage the change process, the social dimension in combination with appreciation, has been the underlying basis for continued motivation with the changes.

Från beredning till utfall : En policyanalys av apoteksmonopolets omreglering och den nya privatiserade apoteksmarknaden

Lindhe, Anna January 2024 (has links)
This bachelor’s thesis is about the reregulation of the Swedish pharmacy monopoly that occurred in July 2009. The study is examining the intentions of the reregulation, the Swedish pharmacy market as it is today and if there seems to be a correlation between these. The theory used for the study is the policy process and it serves as a way for the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the process between the preparations of the decision, and the evaluation of the solution that was implemented. Through a policy analysis and by looking at documents carried out by government authorities the analysis lifts the intentions of the reregulation by interpreting its goals. By reading evaluating documents regarding the reregulation, it is possible to create a perception of the pharmacy market today. In the discussion the question regarding the correlation between these two is brought up and looked at. The result of the study shows that the outcome of the reregulation is not fully correlating to the intentions that was once written in preparing material for the decision. The reregulation was looking for efficiency, availability, lowering costs and creating a safe drug use for the costumers. After looking at the combined material not all goals have been achieved to its fullest.
