Gasslander, Josefine, Lundqvist, Maria-Therese January 2016 (has links)
Background: Have you ever wondered what top athletes occupy themselves with after their career? Most scientists agree that it is important to take advantage of the qualities and traits that elite athletes received through sport. Therefore, are athletes able to use and exploit their sports background in business? Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate which traits former elite athletes consider important in an effective business leader. Furthermore, the purpose is to examine the traits that former elite athletes feel that they have developed during their sporting careers, which they now have the use of in their leading position in the business world. Question: What is, according to former elite athletes, essential for an effective leader in business? What traits have these former elite athletes, in their view, developed during their active career? Methodology: The study uses a qualitative method which is based on six semi-structured interviews with former Olympians. All interviews were conducted by phone or videoconference call. Conclusion: The authors answer the questions and try to clearify the respondents’ interpretations of the key traits of effective leaders. The authors believe that it is also possible to identify some traits that the respondents brought from the sport and that they now use in their civilian career.

Munnik, Engela Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Vrouemisdaad is 'n komplekse sosiale verskynsel. / It can be said that female crime is a complex phenomenon. An aspect of female crime that is investigated in this thesis is to explain, with reference to existing theories, why women commit fewer crimes than men. In an attempt to answer this question, a quantitative investigation regarding the attitude of society towards the female criminal as well as a qualitative study of the available literature, was conducted. An intensive exploratory study on female crime indicated that and academics have a certain of the available the community, perception of literature researchers the female criminal which does not always correspond with the facts. Although the number of female criminals has increased through the years the extent of female crime, proportionally to the population size, has remained constant, and the type of crime committed by women has remained relatively unchanged. It seems clear that no single theory or approach can explain female crime, it can at best give a partial explanation. An integrated explanation model for female crime has been compiled which simultaneously serves as a summary of selected theories. By means of the archival research method a profile of the female prisoner was compiled, to be used as a basis for the researcher's scientific knowledge of this phenomenon. Statistically significant relations were found to exist between the characteristics of the white female prisoner's marital status, number of children and fraud. The quantitative investigation consisted of an analysis of the responses of 516 respondents on an attitude scale. The results of various statistical techniques show that the research group, which represents respondents fr6m four suburbs from structure plan cell 22 of Pretoria, reveals certain attitudes and beliefs about the female criminal. This attitude measurement indicated that differences in perceptions regarding the female in the white community do criminal and female exist. Furthermore crime these perceptions do not correlate on the female criminal in with the information gathered this research. Statistically significant differences in attitude were found between male and female respondents, respondents from the different suburbs, with different qualifications, of different language groups, and of different age groups. / Sociology / D. Rozdíly v hodnocení kvality tlumočení / Differences in evaluation of the quality of interpretation

Pospíšilová, Lenka January 2015 (has links)
Our theoretical-empirical thesis is dedicated to differences in the evaluation of the quality of interpreting. In the theoretical part of our thesis we describe representative studies in aforementioned field and their conclusions. We use them as a basis for the hypothesis of our own research in which we suppose that the formal aspect of an intepreter's delivery will influence the overall evaluation of the quality of his rendering and will be perceived by the respondents as a more important criterion than the logical cohesion of the speech. In the empirical part of our thesis we describe the design and development of our experiment. In this experiment different groups of respondents evaluated nine videos of an interpreter's rendering conducted under specific parameters defined beforehand. Subsequently we evaluate conclusions of our basic and test research. We conclude our work with a partial confirmation of our initial hypothesis.

Oberholzer, Gerhard J 14 June 2011 (has links)
ENGLISH: In this study narratives of immigration are listened to and described from the local context of the Christian Reformed Church, Mansfield in Brisbane, Australia. The development of servant leadership is described as part of the culture of the congregation. The congregation focuses on the needs of immigrants as an immigrant-friendly church. The research approach in this study flows from an epistemology based on a narrative theory. The post foundational approach incorporates social constructionism as part of the process in exploring a deeper meaning of the stories told by immigrants. Within this framework of post foundational practical theology, the praxis is the starting point of research. This consists of local knowledge, described and interpreted by the co-researchers and informed by traditions of interpretation. The experiences of co-researchers are interpreted on a second level with the appointment of four interdisciplinary respondents. The respondents take part in an interdisciplinary conversation and they each contribute from their field of experience. This is done by using transversal rationality and the in-context experiences are thickened through interdisciplinary investigation. Furthermore, a study of relevant literature is introduced and added to the conversation. At the end of the research process some suggestions and alternative interpretations that point beyond the local context, are made. The research process is therefore developed from a post foundational theological positioning with the aim of describing immigration narratives and interpreting these narratives in order to facilitate a deeper knowledge and insight into the immigration process. Different discourses will be explored by asking critical questions and using a process of deconstruction. The in-context experiences of co-researchers are the primary narrative and their interpretations of experiences will be studied. The language of co-researchers and how they use language will be discussed. Their own interpretations will be used as discussion points in follow up conversations and their narratives will therefore be allowed into a process of growth. Their language, pointing to their experience of the presence of God as well as their language of doubt in the process of immigration will be listened to. Servant leadership will be discussed as an integral part of immigration for believers. The stories of the co-researchers reveal servant leadership in many different forms as part of the culture of the congregation in Mansfield. The narratives show the co-researchers becoming part of the ministry of servant leaders in the congregation. Co-researchers experience the influence of the servant leadership of others in their lives and tell stories of how their needs as immigrants are met by the servant leaders in the congregation. The literature on servant leadership points to self leadership, team leadership, leadership development and strategic leadership as relevant themes to be explored. The conclusion of this study shows servant leadership as an integral part of immigration and that an intentional focus on a culture of servanthood will benefit an immigration friendly congregation. The proposal following from this study is to engage other congregations and churches in a conversation on the effect of servant leadership within the context of immigration. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Profesionalizace respondentů ve výzkumných panelech: srovnání zkušených a nezkušených členů online panelu / Professional respondents in research panels: comparing trained and fresh members of an on-line panel

Vojtíšek, Jan January 2013 (has links)
Professional respondents in research panels: comparing trained and fresh members of an online panel The diploma thesis deals with the topic of changes in responding of research panel members, which are caused by their previous experience with research process. Various manifestations of this phenomenon, often labelled as the "panel conditioning effect", are described and supported by corresponding empirical evidence. The observations of panel conditioning effect come from longitudinal panel design as well as online access panels. The author proposes logically structured differentiation of the effect. Based on this categorization, several hypotheses about the differences between trained and fresh members of an Internet panel are raised and tested in dedicated online research. The results reveal significant differences between recently-registered and long-term members of the panel, both in their response strategies and in demographic structure of the groups. Yet the overall outcome do not indicate, that interviewing trained respondents would necessarily lead to lower-quality data.

The development of a training programme for traditional birth attendants in the Flagstaff district of Region E of the Eastern Cape

Nompandana, Lulama Elizabeth 06 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify the need for a training programme and to develop the training programme to meet the needs of traditional birth attendants in the management of pregnancy, labour and puerperium. The study was conducted in the Flagstaff district which is one of the districts of the north eastern region (region E) of the Eastern Cape. The target group consisted of all the traditional birth attendants who availed themselves at the residential clinics of Flagstaff district and the number is not known as not all traditional birth attendants who presented themselves are recognized by their communities as traditional birth attendants. The study was a quantitative descriptive design and the data was collected by means of structured interviews using a questionnaire that was designed by the researcher. According to the findings the traditional birth attendants are functioning without being formally trained before. They lack knowledge and skill in the management of pregnancy, labour and puerperium. Some of their practices are reason for concern, for example cephalic versions and not using protective devices. There is a need for the development of the training programme in the Flagstaff district. This programme was developed from the information obtained from the data-analysis and is given as annexure F / Health Sciences / M.A. (Advanced Nursing Sciences)

Economic contribution of backyard gardens in alleviating poverty in the rural communities of Bojanala Platinum district municipality, in North West Province, South Africa

Mokone, Neo William 07 1900 (has links)
Backyard gardens has been identified as one of the possible solutions to some of the issues surrounding poverty alleviation in the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality. The main objective of the study was to determine the economic contribution of backyard gardens in alleviation of poverty in rural communities of Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in the North West Province, South Africa. The study used purposive sampling for data collection from the study respondents which enabled the researcher to select a sample with experience and knowledge about the study variables. The questionnaire used as data collection instrument was pretested, validated and subjected to reliability test to improve the efficiency of the use of the questionnaire. The collected data was sorted, coded and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 23.0 software. Frequency count and percentage were used to summarize the data into tables and graphs. The linear multiple regression model specification was employed to examine the demographic and socio-economic factors (predictors) that influence the generation of income from backyard gardens. Multinomial logistics regression model was also used to determine factors influencing the respondents’ objectives for the Backyard gardens, while the logit regression model was used to analyse determinants of the proportion of backyard land used for backyard farming by respondents/growers. The findings of the study are that: more females (68.2%) were involved in the study than males (31.8%); youth involved in the study were 27.7%; the majority (60.4%) of respondents are in the age group of 41-70 years of age; majority (69.5%) of respondents had matric education, 20.9% had tertiary education, and 3.6% had below matric education whilst 5.9% had no formal education; most of respondents are unemployed (86.6%); 32.2% of respondents are dependent on pension as their source of income, 12.3% depend on grant, 15% depend on monthly salaries, 0.5% depend on investments, 2.3% depend on remittance, and 18.6% depend on piece jobs, whilst 19.1% reported other source of income; majority (99%) of respondents reported that backyard garden contribute a significant proportion to both household income and food security, whilst 1.0% did not agree; 40% of the respondents could not manage to farm the whole garden area, while 60% were able to farm the entire garden area; the majority (70.9%) of respondents provide own solutions to their backyard garden challenges; majority (53.7%) of respondents reported that extension officers never visited their gardens, whilst 46.3% had extension visits on weekly, monthly and quarterly bases; 23.2% of the respondents created permanent employment while 34.1% of them created seasonal employment. The results of the OLS regression analysis showed that gender of respondents, with formal employment, ownership of a farm besides the Backyard garden (BYG) by respondent, farmers’ years of experience in farming and annual income from the sale of livestock by respondent had positive and statistically significant influence on the annual income from Backyard garden with all other factors held constant. The results of the multinomial regression analyses show that a unit change in number of years involved in backyard gardening (YRSBG) does not significantly change the odds of being classified in the 4th category of the outcome variable (Produce to help the needy, the poor, to feed the orphans, and for home based-cares around their communities = 4) relative to the first or second or third categories of the outcome variable, while controlling for the influence of the others. On the other hand a unit change in being employed (EMPLO) and involved in non-farm activities (NFA) do significantly change the odds of being classified in the 4th category of the outcome variable relative to the second or third categories of the outcome variable, while controlling the influence of the others. The Logit coefficient estimate associated with Age, Income per month from BYG, Engage in non-farm activities, Years of experience in gardening, Proportion of produce consumed, having a business plan, Own a farm besides BYG and to lease your backyard have statistically significant impact on respondents area of cultivation for BYG with other factors held constant. Policies to improve BYG in the district should be informed by the aforementioned variables from the results of the inferential analyses. / Agriculture / M. Sc. (Agriculture)
