Process Mining ermöglicht die Analyse von Event Logs. Jede Aktivität ist durch ein Event in einem Trace recorded, welcher jeweils einer Prozessinstanz entspricht. Traces können sensible Daten, z.B. über Patienten enthalten. Diese Dissertation adressiert Datenschutzrisiken für Trace Daten und Process Mining. Durch eine empirische Studie zum Re-Identifikations Risiko in öffentlichen Event Logs wird die hohe Gefahr aufgezeigt, aber auch weitere Risiken sind von Bedeutung. Anonymisierung ist entscheidend um Risiken zu adressieren, aber schwierig weil gleichzeitig die Verhaltensaspekte des Event Logs erhalten werden sollen. Dies führt zu einem Privacy-Utility-Trade-Off. Dieser wird durch neue Algorithmen wie SaCoFa und SaPa angegangen, die Differential Privacy garantieren und gleichzeitig Utility erhalten. PRIPEL ergänzt die anonymiserten Control-flows um Kontextinformationen und ermöglich so die Veröffentlichung von vollständigen, geschützten Logs. Mit PRETSA wird eine Algorithmenfamilie vorgestellt, die k-anonymity garantiert. Dafür werden privacy-verletztende Traces miteinander vereint, mit dem Ziel ein möglichst syntaktisch ähnliches Log zu erzeugen. Durch Experimente kann eine bessere Utility-Erhaltung gegenüber existierenden Lösungen aufgezeigt werden. / Process mining analyzes business processes using event logs. Each activity execution is recorded as an event in a trace, representing a process instance's behavior. Traces often hold sensitive info like patient data. This thesis addresses privacy concerns arising from trace data and process mining. A re-identification risk study on public event logs reveals high risk, but other threats exist. Anonymization is vital to address these issues, yet challenging due to preserving behavioral aspects for analysis, leading to a privacy-utility trade-off. New algorithms, SaCoFa and SaPa, are introduced for trace anonymization using noise for differential privacy while maintaining utility. PRIPEL supplements anonymized control flows with trace contextual info for complete protected logs. For k-anonymity, the PRETSA algorithm family merges privacy-violating traces based on a prefix representation of the event log, maintaining syntactic similarity. Empirical evaluations demonstrate utility improvements over existing techniques.

Changes in economic, environmental and social conditions have exposed our society to many challenges such as hunger and poverty, epidemic diseases and dramatic climate changes. As business entities operating within the community, companies have the immense task of assisting the community to address these challenges. To carry out this task, companies use socially responsible investment (SRI) initiatives in the effort to give back to local communities. These initiatives focus on environmental, social and economic activities that seek to improve the wellbeing of the community at large. The theoretical explanations behind SRI strategies tend to stimulate discussions and contestations about the motive behind SRI initiatives and their relevance to the companies and the community concerned. Some theories purport that a company should have a sole social responsibility goal of creating wealth for its shareholders, while others consider SRI initiatives as a means of interaction between a company and its immediate community. Despite these different views, SRI theories concur that companies’ SRI initiatives can contribute to economic development.
The study reported in this document used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to analyse the effects of the SRI sector on micro- and macroeconomic development in South Africa. The key empirical objectives of the study were to: assess the effect of SRI initiatives on the financial performance of South African companies; determine the volatility of the SRI Index relative to the overall stock market; establish the interactions between various macroeconomic variables and the South African SRI sector; identify the involvement of the local community in designing SRI initiatives; determine local communities’ perceptions towards implementation of SRI initiatives; and assess how various socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of community members affect their perceptions towards SRI initiatives. Primary data were collected through interviews and quetiapine; while secondary data running from May 2004 to June 2014 was obtained from the JSE, McGregor BFA and SARB. The data include variables such as the share returns of companies in the SRI Index and various macroeconomic variables. The econometric models used to analyse the data included the Johansen co-integration test, vector error correction model (VECM), generalised autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (GARCH),
autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model, Granger causality test, the event study methodology and binary logistic regression.
Results of the event study methodology showed that an improvement in companies’ involvement in SRI initiatives is linked with positive returns; however, such positive returns were not statistically significant. On the contrary, a decline in a company’s involvement in SRI initiatives is associated with significant negative abnormal returns. Further analysis showed that the South African SRI index is not exposed to any unique volatility. The analysis on the relationship between the SRI Index (a proxy for the sector) and macroeconomic variables suggests that development of the South African SRI sector is linked with macroeconomic growth and stability.
To analyse the effect of SRI initiatives at a microeconomic level, an SRI initiative of implemented by a specific company in Bophelong Township formed the basis of the analysis. Findings revealed that this initiative benefited less privileged community members through the creation of temporary employment and provision of skills that created opportunities for future employment. Households with low economic status, those headed by a female or unemployed head were the most satisfied with the SRI initiative compared to others beneficiaries of the SRI initiative. Thus, the SRI initiative positively impacted the relationship between the company and community members, while at the same time creating expectations for future initiatives within the community.
This study concluded that SRI initiatives must be aligned with the needs of the community in order to contribute to both micro- and macroeconomic development. As much as companies are expected to implement socially responsible initiatives, community members should also be encouraged to meet these companies halfway through programmes such as volunteering. Findings of this study can assist policy makers and companies in aligning SRI initiatives with the needs of the community, improving the involvement of community members in SRI initiatives, developing strategies to reduce the costs associated with SRI initiatives and, hence, increasing the impact of SRI initiatives. / PhD (Economics)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2015.

Fiduciary responsibility and responsible investment : definition, interpretation and implications for the key role players in the pension fund investment chainSwart, Rene Louise 02 1900 (has links)
Since their creation in Europe in the seventeenth century, pension funds have grown to become one of the main sources of capital in the world. A number of role players ultimately manage the pension money of members on their behalf. Accordingly, the focus of this study is on the role players involved in the actual investment of pension fund money. For the purposes of the study, the key role players in the pension fund investment chain are identified as pension fund trustees, asset managers and asset consultants. These role players have a specific responsibility in terms of the service that they ought to provide. One of the key aspects of this dissertation is therefore determining whether their responsibility is a fiduciary responsibility.
The main purpose of the study is, however, to answer one overarching research question:
Does fiduciary responsibility create barriers to the implementation of responsible investment in the South African pension fund investment chain?
Clearly, there are two key terms in this research question, fiduciary responsibility and responsible investment. It is suggested that responsible investment takes at least two forms: a “business case” form1 in which environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues are considered only in so far as they are financially material; and a social form in which ESG issues are considered over maximising risk adjusted financial returns.
Three key questions were asked in order to find qualitative descriptions and interpretations of fiduciary responsibility:
Question 1: Are the key role players in the pension fund investment chain fiduciaries?
Question 2: If so, to whom do the key role players owe their fiduciary duty?
Question 3: What are the fiduciary duties of the key role players in the pension fund investment chain?

Governance of financial innovationArthur, Keren Naa Abeka January 2015 (has links)
The power of financial innovations to impact societies at global scales compels us to ask how innovation occurs, how it is governed and how to support the responsible initiation and emergence of such innovation in society. This thesis focuses on investigating and comparing current approaches to, and limitations of, the governance of financial innovation and perceptions of responsible financial innovation in three very different institutional settings: a large, global asset management company; a SME developing disruptive, technology - related platforms and services based on big data and associated analytics supporting customer relationship management in the banking and retail sectors; and a global insurance broker. To date there has been almost no published empirical research into the processes and governance of financial innovation in such corporate settings. The initial hypothesis that financial innovation is not governed (internally, externally) was not supported by the empirical data: rather these suggest the existence of formal and informal mechanisms for innovation governance. As suggested in the literature, financial innovation was observed to be largely incremental in nature and involve multiple stakeholders, co-ordinated internally by an ‘innovation owner’ (e.g. an individual, a group of individuals or a department). The research suggests that while there is broad statutory (regulation) and non-statutory governance of the financial sector, there is limited direct regulation of financial innovation per se. Despite this, contextual regulation (e.g. EU) and industry standards set an important governance frame within which innovation was observed to occur, complemented by a range of organizational innovation governance approaches, which ranged from completely informal, ad hoc (‘de facto’) processes to formal staging innovation management tools. It was not possible to generalize across sectors, emphasizing the need for more empirical work in other organizations in order to understand innovation management and governance across the financial sector as a whole. Responsible financial innovation is an emerging concept associated with a very small body of academic literature. The case study data show responsible financial innovation to be perceived as an ‘interpretively flexible umbrella’ term, underpinned by a value system that leads to quantifiable positive outputs (e.g. creating customer satisfaction). The research suggests that several ‘competencies’ (e.g. compliance, learning, communication, monitoring, and ownership) were perceived as relevant to responsible financial innovation by respondents. Themes emerging from the study mirrored to some extent the seven framings suggested by Armstrong et al. (2012) and Muniesa and Lenglet (2012) and the four dimensions of responsible innovation proposed by Owen et al. (2013); these however were very narrowly framed, especially with regard to second-order reflexivity (e.g. on the normative purposes and functions of finance in society). While dimensions of anticipation, reflection, deliberation and responsiveness (Owen et al., 2013) were evident to varying degrees in the cases these were narrowly configured (e.g. around ethics of data monetization, or on anticipation of operational risks), with deliberation often being internally focused, or including only a limited range of external stakeholders. These observations cause me to argue that current mechanisms for governing financial innovation are not sufficiently robust to support their responsible emergence in society. I conclude that any framework for responsible financial innovation should endeavor to broaden the scope for stakeholder engagement and make use of multi-level governance mechanisms (including committees in the innovation and governance process), while continuing to acknowledge the importance of contextual legislation in the framing of innovation trajectories. I recommend the initiation of a cross sector and independent institution for systematic financial innovations assessment, the establishment of formal cross-sector fora and communication channels to facilitate engagement with external stakeholders, and the codification of responsible financial innovation competencies into contextual legislation.

A comparison between ESG funds and traditional funds from a sustainable perspectivGelotte, Kevin January 2016 (has links)
During recent years many fund managers have merchandised their funds as accounting for “ethical”, “responsible” and “sustainable” criterions during the investment process (the generic term “ESG funds” will be used hereafter). These managers have used this as a marketing tool and claimed that this brings added value to their investors. However, it has been very hard for investors to actually determine if the fund managers have been following these announced “ESG” criterions and strategies. In addition to this there have been a lot of discussions around whether or not funds that incorporate “ESG” criterions during their investment process sacrifice return in order to fulfill their obligations. During March this year Morningstar launched the first independent rating that aims to evaluate how the underlying holdings in fund, i.e. companies in which the fund own shares, manage environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters. By analyzing the underlying holdings from the aspects mentioned above, Morningstar has been able to aggregate this information into a sustainability measure for funds. This new sustainability measure has been named Morningstar Sustainability Rating™, which is a rating for how sustainable a fund is. This thesis address questions regarding how ESG funds, or rather funds that market themselves as ESG funds, tend to have different attributes compared to traditional funds in the Nordic countries Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Norway. The specific attributes that has been examined are relative fund flows, total returns, risk-adjusted ratings and sustainability ratings. The results suggest that ESG funds do not show a difference in Sustainability Ratings compared to traditional funds. Furthermore, it could be verified that ESG funds in some cases generate higher relative fund flows compared to traditional funds. It has also been confirmed that these ESG funds actually outperforms traditional funds from a total return perspective.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to develop an understanding for how risk, return and ethicalaspects affect the decision to invest in an ethical fund. Specifically is the aim of the thesis todevelop a perception if socio-demographical differences regarding gender, age and education canexplain the propensity to invest in ethical funds. Method: A survey consisting of 90 respondents. Conclusion: The thesis finding show support for the claim that women see the ethical aspect inrelation to the return for investment in an ethical fund as more important than men do. This canfurther explain the propensity for women to invest more in ethical funds than men. The thesisdoesn’t find any support for the claim that women and men, younger and older value low risk, forthe decision to invest in an ethical fund, differently. This goes against previous research within thefield of mutual fund and indicates that the investment behavior between ethical funds and regularfunds differ. The thesis did not find any support for the claim that higher educated people see theethical aspect in relation to the return as more important than people with lower education. / Syfte: Studien syfte är att utveckla en förståelse för hur risk, avkastning och etiskt inslag påverkarvid beslutet som leder till investering i en etisk fond. Specifikt syftar uppsatsen till att utvecklauppfattning kring om socio-demografiska skillnader avseende kön, ålder och utbildning, finns somförklaring i benägenheten att investera i etiska fonder. Metod: Vi har gjort enkätundersökningar på 90 respondenter Slutsats: Uppsatsen finner stöd för att kvinnor ser den etiska aspekten i relation till avkastningenvid investering i en etisk fond som viktigare än vad män gör. Detta kan förklara varför kvinnorockså är mer benägna än män att investera i en etisk fond. Uppsatsen finner inget stöd för attkvinnor och män, yngre och äldre värderar låg risk vid investering i en etisk fond olika. Dettamotsäger tidigare forskning inom investeringsbeteende för fonder generellt sett vilket indikerar attinvesteringsbeteende för vanliga fonder och etiska fonder skiljer sig åt. Uppsatsen finner helleringet stöd för att högre utbildade ser den etiska aspekten som viktigare än avkastning vidinvestering i en etisk fond.

The financial performance of ethical funds : A comparative analysis of the risk-adjusted performance of ethical and non-ethical mutual funds in UKShloma, Elena January 2009 (has links)
<p>The review of the ethical funds literature shows the significant growth of the Socially Responsible Investments (SRI) in the last few decades. The increase of the interest towards SRI indicates that ethical issues have become more essential for the investors. However the number of surveys reveals that financial performance remains of an important concern for the socially responsible investors. Therefore the benchmark analysis of the expected returns and management fees of the ethical mutual funds is chosen as a topic for this thesis research. The risk-adjusted measures are used to analyze and compare the performance of the ethical and non-ethical mutual funds in United Kingdom. The analysis does not indicate the significant difference in the expected returns between the two groups of funds. However this study concludes that on average ethical funds charge higher management fees. Thus investing in ethical funds is more costly but gives about the same returns as investing in conventional funds.</p>

?Never short of a smile?: A Content Analysis of Travel GuidebooksQuinlan, Sarah January 2005 (has links)
Guidebooks are argued to be significant elements of the tourism infrastructure (Koshar, 1998), influencing the perception of destinations and the travel practices of millions of tourists (Gilbert, 1999). Guidebooks have been depicted as mediators, interpreters, and communicators of place and people, yet the examination of these texts as part of tourism has received little attention in the academic literature. There are few studies focusing on what information guidebooks are presenting to tourists (Bhattacharyya, 1997; Lew, 1991; McGregor, 2000). <br /><br /> In pursuit of cultural, environmental, and leisure experiences, tourists are going all over the world and there is increasing concern over the economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts of this activity. Information on these impacts can be found in academic literature and government reports, but rarely is it presented to tourists. <br /><br /> The purpose of this study is to analyse and describe how travel guidebooks communicate information on socio-cultural, environmental, and other destination specific issues. The republic of Peru was the case study area for this research. <br /><br /> Destination data was collected through interviews with tourism representatives in Per??, Destination Management Organisation (DMO) website analysis, and participant observation. This data was analysed to provide a coding scheme for the current issues and impacts in Peru relating to tourism. This coding scheme was used to analyse the content of the most commonly used commercial guidebooks for Peru (Lonely Planet, South American Handbook, Rough Guide) to understand if and how guidebooks are addressing current issues in Peru tourism. <br /><br /> Qualitative content analysis of destination data resulted in 29 emergent categories which were evaluated based on theme distributions (socio-cultural, environmental, and other) and source information. Categories were grouped based on importance values to allow for further examination of the main issues and impacts involved in Peru tourism. <br /><br /> Qualitative analysis of guidebook content resulted in 4 additional categories for a total of 33 items. This was followed by quantitative analysis of guidebook content to better understand theme distributions, statement types, marketing communication types, and relationships with original category intentions. Guidebook content was organised into groups based on importance values and compared with the importance groups found in the destination data to determine differences in category relevance. <br /><br /> The implications of this research in presenting information to tourists are discussed in terms of their relevance to socio-cultural and environmental interpretation, marketing and communication theory, and responsible tourism. Similarities and differences found in comparing destination and guidebook data are examined. Findings and discussions based on this research indicate that the role of the guidebook is multi-dimensional. These texts, juxtaposed between host and guest, mediate and interpret ecological, cultural, and social information. Findings of this research suggest that though guidebooks are involved in persuasive messaging which raises issues of power and representation, guidebooks are the only popular tourist information source in Peru attempting to influence tourists to reduce cultural and environmental impacts. This discussion is followed by suggestions for future research in this area.

Nudging Towards Social Change: The Application of Psychology and Behavioral Economics in Promoting Responsible ConsumptionChern, Larissa 01 January 2017 (has links)
With workplace disasters in developing countries increasingly in the news, a major question is how to encourage consumers to use corporate social responsibility as a criterion in purchasing. Distinct from environmental concerns, social responsibility is defined here with respect to the humanitarian aspects of corporate practice, including fair wages and working conditions, equitable treatment of the disadvantaged, and restriction of child labor. Although the idea of socially responsible consumption (SRC) was first identified over forty years ago, most recent research on changing consumption habits focuses specifically on environmentally responsible consumption (ERC). Combining the psychological concept of social norms with economic emphasis on choice framing, research in behavioral economics has suggested that ERC can be promoted by “nudges,” low-cost initiatives that alter the decision environment to favor specific options. Here, we provide an overview of the existing literature on nudges and consumer choice, including the role of social norms, as well as other factors involved in successful social messaging. Previous research on ERC suggests that social norm nudges may result in higher rates of energy conservation, recycling and reuse, and purchasing of ecologically-friendly products. Applying these findings to the domain of SRC, we propose a set of possible interventions to increase consumer attention to social responsibility, highlighting the distinguishing roles of empathy and targeted demographic appeals in nudging consumers towards social change.
