Unga investerare : Risktagande på börsen / Young investors : Risk taking on the stock marketStröm, Anton, Svensson, Linda January 2023 (has links)
An investigation has revealed that many Swedish young people are lured into buying expensive training courses to learn how to trade risky financial instruments. With the argument of avoiding traditional full-time jobs and the dream of financial freedom, more young people choose to join the stock exchange and trade in financial instruments. In the last five years, the number of Swedish investors has increased from 2.1 to 2.7 million, where the biggest factor is that young people have found the stock market. The hope of a good return is the reason why people choose to invest assets in financial instruments instead of holding it at a savings account. Overall, as the investment alternatives have become more abundant, there should be an increased involuntary risk propensity among young investors. As risk taking is one of the most central parts of investing in financial instruments, a monetary loss can discourage a young investor from the stock market if risk is not taken into consideration. The purpose of the study is thus to examine young people's attitude to risk-taking regarding investments on the stock market. Furthermore, young investors' view of risk is examined to form an understanding of why more and more young people act as they do on the stock market. The purpose of this study is answered using a quantitative research method and based on portfolio theory, prospect theory, decision theory and the cultural risk perspective. The study has been done with the aim of contributing knowledge and understanding about young people's investment strategy in order to increase risk awareness among young investors. The data has been collected through a survey that highlights how the 611 respondents view risk. The results of the study show that there is arrogance among young investors, which means that they underestimate their risk-taking or even do not understand the risk they are exposing themselves to. The study confirms that the lure of making quick money by trading in risky financial instruments can overtake the young investor's rational and informed investment decisions.

Gender differences in debt collection / Könsskillnader inom inkassoKARÉGAR, ARMAN January 2021 (has links)
From the perspective of debt collectors, the goal of debt collection processes is to maximize the chances of a debt being repaid, while minimizing the time to repayment taking place. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what measure that is most commonly leading to debt being repaid within 30 days. Against a background of males being overrepresented among debtors in terms of the share of the population in Sweden, the purpose has also been to use data analytics methods to explore whether the measures from debt collection companies affect males and females differently and how they affect them. Finally, the purpose has furthermore been to explore whether existing data provided by the debt collection company Visma can be used to optimize the debt collection process so that the debtors' time in it becomes as short as possible. The report has found that invoicing seems to be the measure most strongly associated with debt resolvance, suggesting that this measure is an important tool for debt collection agencies. The report has found that the measures affect males and females differently, which may be related to gender differences in attitudes to financial risk. Furthermore, it has been shown that it presumably is possible to create prediction models to know which debtors will be able to pay their debt. These models should be divided by gender as males, tend to take more risks. Lastly, machine learning and other modern tools, such as Open banking, should be used to optimize the debt collection process.

Measuring self-regulation in everyday life: Reliability and validity of smartphone-based experiments in alcohol use disorderZech, Hilmar, Waltmann, Maria, Lee, Ying, Reichert, Markus, Bedder, Rachel L., Rutledge, Robb B., Deeken, Friederike, Wenzel, Julia, Wedemeyer, Friederike, Aguilera, Alvaro, Aslan, Acelya, Bach, Patrick, Bahr, Nadja S., Ebrahimi, Claudia, Fischbach, Pascale C., Ganz, Marvin, Garbusow, Maria, Großkopf, Charlotte M., Heigert, Marie, Hentschel, Angela, Belanger, Matthew, Karl, Damian, Pelz, Patricia, Pinger, Mathieu, Riemerschmid, Carlotta, Rosenthal, Annika, Steffen, Johannes, Strehle, Jens, Weiss, Franziska, Wieder, Gesine, Wieland, Alfred, Zaiser, Judith, Zaiser, Judith, Zimmermann, Sina, Liu, Shuyan, Goschke, Thomas, Walter, Henrik, Tost, Heike, Lenz, Bernd, Andoh, Jamila, Ebner-Priemer, Ulrich, Rapp, Michael A., Heinz, Andreas, Dolan, Ray, Smolka, Michael N., Deserno, Lorenz 22 April 2024 (has links)
Self-regulation, the ability to guide behavior according to one’s goals, plays an integral role in understanding loss of control over unwanted behaviors, for example in alcohol use disorder (AUD). Yet, experimental tasks that measure processes underlying self-regulation are not easy to deploy in contexts where such behaviors usually occur, namely outside the laboratory, and in clinical populations such as people with AUD. Moreover, lab-based tasks have been criticized for poor test–retest reliability and lack of construct validity. Smartphones can be used to deploy tasks in the field, but often require shorter versions of tasks, which may further decrease reliability. Here, we show that combining smartphone-based tasks with joint hierarchical modeling of longitudinal data can overcome at least some of these shortcomings. We test four short smartphone-based tasks outside the laboratory in a large sample (N = 488) of participants with AUD. Although task measures indeed have low reliability when data are analyzed traditionally by modeling each session separately, joint modeling of longitudinal data increases reliability to good and oftentimes excellent levels. We next test the measures’ construct validity and show that extracted latent factors are indeed in line with theoretical accounts of cognitive control and decision-making. Finally, we demonstrate that a resulting cognitive control factor relates to a real-life measure of drinking behavior and yields stronger correlations than single measures based on traditional analyses. Our findings demonstrate how short, smartphone-based task measures, when analyzed with joint hierarchical modeling and latent factor analysis, can overcome frequently reported shortcomings of experimental tasks.

An exploration of adolescents' knowledge of HIV/AIDS and its influence on sexual behaviour: the case of a high school in Johannesburg, South AfricaTagwireyi, Laurence 06 1900 (has links)
Aims: The study was aimed at exploring adolescents‟ level of knowledge of HIV/AIDS and the influence this knowledge has on their sexual behaviour. Methods: In total, 20 in- depth interviews were conducted from a group of 20 (both males and females) secondary school learners. The interviews were audio taped with consent from participants. Results: The results of the study showed that participants possess basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS, including methods of prevention and transmission. No serious misconceptions about modes of transmission of HIV were found in this study. Although, participants reported condom use, no sexual intercourse with multiple concurrent partners and no intergenerational sexual relationships, the findings revealed some risk factors such as early sexual debuts, early dating, multiple sexual partnerships. Conclusions: The aforesaid sexual behaviours and the sexual activeness among learners is a cause for angst. Thus, these findings highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to sexual reproductive health education by all interested parties in order to enhance and sustain behaviour change among young people. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

A mixed methods investigation of perceptions of adulthood and gender : links to stereotyped and risky behaviours amongst young people in Kirkcaldy, FifePopple, Helen January 2014 (has links)
Adolescence is a formative period of identity development. From the start of high school young people begin to direct their own development through peer selection and behavioural choices. During this time young people have the opportunity to engage in risky behaviours such as drinking alcohol, smoking, having unprotected sex and taking illegal drugs, for the first time. These behaviours amongst young people have been linked to a range of adverse health and wellbeing outcomes, both short and long term. This study seeks to improve understanding of eleven to fifteen year olds' behavioural choices through investigation of potential links to perceptions of adulthood and gender. In order to capture this more fully a mixed methods approach is used with a quantitative cross-sectional pupil survey and in-depth intergenerational family qualitative interviews. By exploring a broad range of age and gender stereotyped, and risky behaviours, this study seeks to provide better understanding of participants' perceptions, motivations and involvement in these behaviours. Results of the study demonstrate both gendered and age differentiated patterns of perceptions. Between eleven and fifteen years old, boys demonstrate more pronounced values attributed to masculine roles. Conversely, stereotyped feminine roles appear to decrease in appeal to girls. Fourth year girls perceive risky behaviours as considerably more relevant to them, than their male peers. Interviewed mothers were unsure of how best to manage their daughter's behaviours considering their own lack of experience and the apparently high value attributed to non-confrontational, friendship based, mothering. Current methods of teaching and intervening generally address mixed gender age-group classes. This research suggests in order to modify risk-taking behaviours a gender specific approach may be more effective.

HIV knowledge and sexual risk behaviour of grade 12 learners in the Cape Metropole, Cape TownJaars, Cleopatra 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCurr)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The HIV pandemic threatens the social, emotional, and physical development of all persons, especially the youth. Adolescents are more at risk of contracting HIV as their lifestyle often involves sexual exploration and experimentation. Effective educational interventions are central to HIV prevention in South Africa. Being a clinical nurse practitioner in a primary health care (PHC) facility, the principal investigator observed that school learners failed to practice safe sex and demonstrated little knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention.
The aim of the study was to investigate the reported level of HIV knowledge and sexual risk behaviour of grade 12 school learners in the Eastern Sub-District of the Cape Metropole, Cape Town. A descriptive, non-experimental, research design was employed with a primarily quantitative approach. The study population comprised grade 12 learners from high schools in the Eastern Sub-District of the Cape Metropole in Cape Town (N=7940). A total of 92 participants from four schools (2 public and 2 private) were included in the sample by using a cluster sampling method. A self-completion semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect the data. Data was collected by the principal investigator and a trained field worker.
Ethical approval was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University (N11/07/225). Permission to conduct the research was obtained from the Department of Education.
Reliability and validity were assured by means of a pilot study and the use of experts in the field of nursing research and statistics.
Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data. Statistical associations were determined using ANOVA and the Mann-Whitney U tests. The qualitative data was analysed thematically and then quantified.
The results show that the average HIV/AIDS knowledge score of participants was 60.73%. However, many gaps in HIV/AIDS knowledge were identified. Only 77.2% (n=71) of participants knew the meaning of HIV, 80.4% (n=74) did not know all the ways in which HIV can be transmitted and only 8.7% (n=8) knew how to safely use a condom. The majority of participants (67.4%; n=62) believed in the myth that HIV can be cured and 18.5% (n=17) reported that a traditional healer can cure HIV. With regard to risky behaviour, half of the participants at the time of the study (51%; n=47) reported sexual engagement and 20% (n=9) of these respondents did not use condoms. Furthermore, 25% (n=23) had used alcohol before having sex. There were no association found between the knowledge about HIV/AIDS of participants and their sexual risk behaviour.
In view of these study findings, participants are exposing themselves to high risk sexual behaviour that may increase their chances of acquiring sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Several recommendations were identified, including the strengthening of HIV and STI education linked to sexual risk reduction, open communication and additional information sources, availability of condoms at schools and improved access to HIV testing at schools.

'Hidden voices' : an exploratory single case study into the multiple worlds of a 15 year old young man with autismO'Leary, Stephen January 2011 (has links)
This thesis presents a 31-day case study carried out with a 15 year old young man who has classical autism. The study involved introducing him to a number of new and challenging activities, in a variety of contexts, over 31 days, that were previously assumed to be outside of his range of capability. The case study found that the application of the concepts of choice, control, challenge and risk had an unexpectedly positive impact upon the young man’s performance. This study further attempts to explore the concept of narrative as a ‘pedagogical bridge’ between the ‘worlds’ of autism and neurotypicality, arguing that narrative may provide a ‘way in’ to the world of autism. ‘Narrative’, this study contends, may provide a tapestry across which the world of autism may be connected with the world that surrounds it; by revealing a multiplicity of selves in a multiplicity of contexts. Methods of data collection included field notes, interviews, photographs and film footage. Ultimately, the study found that the use of ‘performance texts’ (DVDs featuring the young man’s achievements) constituted a powerful means of celebrating his accomplishments within the school and its wider community. Research approaches were participatory and ethnographic in the data collection phases, while a more phenomenological approach was adopted in the data analysis phase. The overarching analytical framework was that of ‘narrative analysis’ in telling a story of bravery, courage, hope and optimism.
