The paternal function: conceptual and therapeutic relevance

Davies, Nicholas Charles Christopher January 2016 (has links)
: The construct of the ‘pre-oedipal’ paternal function, as distinct from the traditional ‘oedipal’ paternal function, is an important yet under-developed focus of study in both the field of infant development and psychoanalytic clinical practice. This thesis contributes towards the development of an integrated concept of the paternal function as well as to a deeper understanding of the different aspects of the construct and its application. A critical literature review of psychoanalytic literature on the ‘paternal function’ highlights an absence of recognition of the importance of the construct, as it is salient in the earliest period of infancy, and characterises it as fragmented and diversely understood when it is mentioned. Four aspects of the paternal function which appear to be the dominant aspects in the literature are identified and elaborated in some detail. Also noted is the tendency for the non-gendered nature of several aspects of the paternal function to be overlooked because of the regular conflation of the role of the father and the paternal function. Extending this theoretically based observation into the domain of therapeutic practice, the conceptualisations of the pre-oedipal paternal function and the extent to which it is employed as a clinical tool was garnered from a sample of self-identified psychoanalytic psychotherapists based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Interviews of the topic were conducted with eight experienced practitioners and subject to thematic analysis guided by existing theory. The findings articulated closely with the international literature which points to a nebulous understanding of the concept and a general absence of reference to it as relevant in clinical formulations. In addition, based on the interview data, some proposals as to why the paternal function poses such a definitional difficulty and why, furthermore, the paternal functionary is apparently persona non grata in the clinical setting, are discussed. Finally, the case for the usefulness of the pre-oedipal paternal function in clinical practice is elucidated through the discussion of four clinical cases, each addressing a particular aspect of the pre-oedipal paternal function. Based on both a critical review of the literature and empirical data in the form of interviews of psychotherapists, and case material, the thesis makes a cogent case for foregrounding and refining conceptual and applied understandings of the construct of the ‘pre-oedipal’ paternal function, highlighting the gendered and non gendered attributes associated with performance of a set of functions associated with the construct.

Konflikt dvou rolí. Problematika dvojí role - rodič jako učitel / Conflict of two roles. The issue of a dual role - parent as a teacher

Mejstříková, Kamila January 2011 (has links)
RESUMÉ The topic of this thesis is the issue of two roles - a role of a teacher and a parent. The goal of the thesis is to research the main key features arising from the issue of the conflict of dual role of a parent and a teacher at the same time. The empirical part of the thesis tries to outline problems which the parents, or let me say, teachers experience in the home and school environment based on the fact that their child or children attend the same school where they themselves work as teachers. Furthermore, the thesis deals with their experience regarding the representation of these two roles in relation to their own family. The data analysis also tries to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the teacher job and also the advantages and disadvantages of the intermingled role of a teacher and a parent. The thesis presented here is written on the basis of the qualitative method of data obtaining and processing. The method of interview analysis is used as well. Statements of four women and four men, woman teachers and man teachers in the secondary school whose children also attended this particular school have been analyzed.

A presença do pai no processo de amadurecimento: um estudo sobre D. W. Winnicott

Fulgencio, Claudia Dias Rosa 29 June 2007 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:39:30Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Claudia Dias Rosa Fulgencio.pdf: 424997 bytes, checksum: a557035c159523a923e47d2ba28ae34c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-06-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose aim of this paper is to explain Winnicott s concept of what is expected of a father, in terms of his presence and the many roles played by him in the bringing up of a child, during the process of personal maturation, from birth to the stage of Oedipus Complex, keeping in mind healthy up-bringing. Without intending to write a comparative paper that takes into account many psychoanalytic ways of approaching a same topic, I aim to identify aspects of Winnicott s theories, which referring to this theme, can characterize the most important differences between this author and the traditional psychoanalysis concepts. While the traditional psychoanalysis, due to the centerpiece of Oedipus and to the magnitude of the sexuality theory, the father s role was limited mostly overall to the role of an interventionist and a representative of the law, as for Winnicott, the presence of the father in involved implicated since the beginning of life, when questions concerning Oedipus Complex have no meaning whatsoever, and continues changing as the child matures. This paper confirms the thesis that the thoughts reasonings viewpoints thinkings of this author represents a new theoretical and practical foundation from which the human questions, in this case, the presence and role of the father, in the process of maturation, can be understood / Este estudo tem por objetivo explicitar a concepção de Winnicott acerca do que é requerido do pai, em termos de presença e dos diversos papéis que lhe estão reservados na criação de um filho, ao longo do processo de amadurecimento pessoal, do nascimento até o estágio do complexo de Édipo, tendo em vista um desenvolvimento saudável.

Mosholi, Mpotseng Sina 12 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This study explored the lived experiences of black African men who grew up in absent-father homes. A phenomenological approach and qualitative exploratory design were used. The research participants were recruited in the Pretoria, South Africa through purposive sampling. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the information. The findings of this study indicate the following: the participants experienced various challenges in growing up in absent father homes. These included financial challenges, feelings of rejection, lack of guidance and protection. They had to rely on their single mothers for provision as well as the extended family and the community for support. These men were self-reliant, persevered and worked hard to achieve their goals in life. Resilience also played a role in making them thrive. They in turn wanted to be good fathers and husbands to their wives and children. Further research on resilient men who grew up in absent-father homes is recommended. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Problematika ukončení těhotenství / Issue of Abortion

Váňa, Miroslav January 2018 (has links)
This diploma thesis is aimed at problems of abortion and simultaneously of a different view of theological and biological sciences that deal with these problems. Concurrently, it is necessary to offer an essential outline of basic embryological and medical processes which enable understanding the given problem in view of importance of this situation. On the one hand the thesis presents legal essentials related to the topic in a historical legal context, on the other hand it does not exclude contemporary trends. It regards the given problems through a point of view of various Christian churches as well as world religious streams. It refers to negative health consequences of miscarriage and induced abortion but in the same time it presents basic information about contraception and differentiation of contraceptive and interceptive means. The thesis also presents opinions of individual churches that express their view of contraception or interception. The author of this thesis thinks critically over these thoughts and invites readers to create their own reflection of given problems. He tries to outline a wide range of these problems in the new, wider and often ignored point of view, that is of father's view. A father is often totally ignored during an abortion though he is actually a half-donor of...
