Sexual Relationships between Athletes and Coaches : Love, Sexual Consent, and Abuse

Johansson, Susanne January 2017 (has links)
Coach-athlete sexual relationships (CASR) and sexual harassment and abuse (SHA) in sport can profoundly impact athletes’ welfare and performance. Yet, it is often ignored due to sensitivity, secrecy, and lack of knowledge. There is no previous research on SHA in sport in Sweden, and legal, consensual, same-sex CASR is under-researched. The overall purpose of this doctoral thesis is to examine CASR in competitive sport in Sweden. More specifically: a) athletes’ experiences of CASR; b) prevalence of SHA in coach-athlete relationships; c) conceptual and theoretical issues to broaden the understanding of CASR and SHA, will be examined. Survey methodology is employed in Article I to explore the prevalence of SHA, coach-athlete relationship factors, and association between relationship factors and SHA. A random sample of current and former male and female Swedish athletes (n=477) aged 25 participated. Article II outlines critical issues of CASR, and theories and conceptualisations of romantic love, sexual consent, and female athlete sexual agency is further developed in the thesis research summary. Drawing on interviews with five female elite athletes aged 23-30, experiences of CASR are analysed in-depth using discourse analyses in Article III and narrative case study design in Article IV. Results show that athletes’ experiences of CASR are positively and negatively diverse but potentially problematic because boundary ambiguity, secrecy, and isolation are common. Social and ethical dilemmas may also occur because CASR intersect contrasting discourses regarding elite sport, coach–athlete relationships, and romantic love. Moreover, CASR integrate professional and private contexts in which equality and power deviate. The research illustrates empirically and theoretically how female elite athletes exercise agency and recognise consensual, mutually desired CASR where romantic love is priority. However, sexual consent can be ambivalent rather than a mutually exclusive yes/no dualism. Socially, consent is a process of negotiation informed by contextual factors, sexual agency, and social structure. In addition, 5.5% prevalence of SHA perpetrated by male coaches is reported, distributed throughout the sampled athletes’ gender, age, sport performance levels, and individual/team sports in the sample. In conclusion, this thesis expands knowledge of athletes’ experiences of love, sexual consent, and abuse in CASR. Previous evidence of SHA in sport is confirmed to include sport in Sweden. Implications for sport and sport sciences are offered.

” Du är min enda glädje, min kärleks föremål.” : Sekulära och individualistiska kärleksuttryck inom arbetarklassen i 1890-talets Sverige

Melin, Hanna January 2021 (has links)
The romantic western, heterosexual couple´s love is a social and cultural construction, which has altered in significance and terms between different time periods, places and social or economic groups. The new, modernized ideal of “romantic love” has in earlier research been exclusively linked to the European bourgeois class during the 19th century and their economic and social progress. The modernizing processes in the Western society during this period has also been said to both form and be affected by the romantic ideal of love during the 19th century. Two of the most important processes of modernization in the western society at the time was the secularization and individualization of structures and lives. In this study I explore these modern values and their expressions through and within the romantic love concept typical for the 19th century, within a social and economic group that has not yet been explored in this context; the working class.       Through a collection of love letters written by two workers in Sweden during the 1890s I investigate expressions which contain a secular or individualized understanding of love and if and how these expressions differed from the modernity expressed in love letters within the upper-class pairs of the time. My purpose is thus to contribute with a more nuanced and representative account of the origin and practice of the modernized understanding of love, than earlier research has done. In my study I show that the working-class couple in fact seemed to inhabit a more modernized view of love then the contemporary couples from higher parts of society. This was expressed through a lack of Godly love and the absence of religious guilt or conflict related to the worldly love for another person in the letters. The working-class couple also expressed a more modernized understanding of love through a more intense and active need for reflexivity, reciprocity, and confirmation in the building of their relationship. Accept from the fact that this couple still placed God in charge of their future material happiness, the expressions of love within the working-class relationship which I have identified thereby shows a new standpoint to present research; modernization and the romantic love concept during the 19th century do in fact not seem to have been exclusively linked to the upper classes and their material wealth, family structure or gender roles.

Neural correlates of romantic love and romantic attachment

Berg Junker, Maria Constance January 2018 (has links)
In the field of neuroscience, being in love and feeling romantically attached to a partner is described as a dynamic process. Romantic love may be viewed as a motivational system, changing throughout time and place, fluctuating on the interest and motivation of the individual. Early memories and attachment towards a caregiver, lay the foundation for later attachment behavior, also known as attachment styles. In this thesis, an exploratory approach is present. The thesis aims to introduce and describe the neural correlates of romantic love and romantic attachment. Brain regions concerned with reward, emotion and thought processing, such as the reward circuitry network of the brain and the limbic system, are being investigated. So are other brain areas involved in romantic love and romantic attachment. Research findings suggest that brain areas responsible for affection, emotional control, learning, memory and social judgment are all involved in the complex processes of being in love and feeling romantically attached. These findings are represented by the involvement of the frontal lobe, cerebral cortex, limbic system, orbitofrontal cortex, and hippocampus, anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), ventral tegmental area (VTA), caudate tail, including the reward pathways of the brain. Distribution and regulation of neurotransmitters such as; vasopressin, oxytocin, dopamine, corticosterone and serotonin are all present in the state of romantic  attachment and romantic love. Overlapping evidence confirms the involvement of the reward circuitry network, together with the limbic system as crucial in the formation and maintenance of a romantic relationship.

Koncept romantické lásky a jeho podoba ve vybraných romantických filmech české a slovenské tvorby / The cocept of romantic lowe and its appearance in selected romantic movies with czech and slovak origin

Jančová, Michaela January 2015 (has links)
Romantic love since its beginnings raises the question of intimacy and has become an essential social force of society. In contrast to the forms of Christian love or passionate love, romantic love is the typical feature that imply a degree of self-knowledge and activity that leads to one of the characteristic elements of "heroic expedition". Since the establishment of the first novels, the concept has undergone significant way and has become the subject of much research int different disciplines. This thesis looks on the issue of display of romantic love in terms of a social construct which is variable over time and dependent on cultural and social factors of the society to which the media as part of the intended product. Constructing myth of romantic love is in this thesis elaborated in the cultural environment of Czech and Slovak film production, which shares a common history. Defined, collected and described myths, metaphors and archetypal view of the concept of romantic love, they were applied to the selected movie stories from the years 1992 - 2013.

Entre ais e suspiros: um estudo discursivo acerca dos enunciadores na canção romântica brasileira / Between ais and sighs: a discursive study about enunciators in Brazilian romantic love songs

Vieira, Gilmar Gomes 22 March 2013 (has links)
This work is dedicated to the study of the romantic enunciator presented in the Brazilian romantic love song, with main analysis corpus made up of lyrics of the last three decades, adapted from Spanish to Portuguese language. We began the research through a comparison between national and Spanish musical production, when we spotted some different behavior of the beings created in the song lyrics, within what Maingueneau characterize as cenografia enunciativa. Notwithstanding, our strictly comparative approach became a historical and cultural study of the Brazilian romantic love song, when the history of the Brazilian song showed us a connection between the Brazilian romantic love songs of the XIX century and the romanticist poets. We had, thus, to consider the modinhas of such period and songs produced in the first 60 years of the XX century (sambas-canções, boleros, canções cafonas), in which certain characteristics of the type of enunciator we have been describing are still present. This way, we began a study on the XX century Brazilian phonographic market, period in which the technological development contributed to the new means of communication, affecting extraordinarily the production and circulation of the romantic love song. With the advent of the radio and television, the geographic and linguistic frontiers became significantly narrow and it intensified the process characterized by Valente as nomadismo and movência, id est., the transplantation and adaptation of the musical genres amongst the frontiers especially those from Spanish speaking countries. Therefore, this work is also a thought on the constant source of inspiration on the Spanish speaking countries repertoire, something that became part of the production and circulation system in the phonographic market, molding the romantic love songs of the first half of the XX century. Since then, this type of songs brought characters which suffering and anguished images started to be seen as discursive traces in the lyrics, what we have characterize along this work as excess. However, the representation of a being for which life was worthless without the person he loved would be annulated by the agents of the cultural industry through elitist actions, once this representation was not a contribution to what Tatit called refinamento do gosto. Considering these excessive romantic characteristics and the new musical scenario since the decade of the 80s (when the romantic love songs were revived by the music sertaneja), our goal in this work was to find some characteristics that could point to a transfiguration of the romantic enunciator, mainly, regarding to its relation with its beloved person described in the song lyrics. Our main corpus (of adapted songs) is made up of lyrics that comprehend the period of 1979 to 2010. Thus, there is a secondary corpus where three modinhas of the XIX century can be found; some sambas-canções of the decade of 30s to 60s of the XX century; as well as two lyrics known as cafonas during the 70s. Our analyses are founded by the discourse and the enunciation studies, but, due to the interdisciplinary aspect of the work, we also have contributions of the sociology, as well as of the history and cultural studies.

The psicanalitic vision was the base used for the understanding of the material collected in the interview, what it points with respect to a inadequaded and the lack of an autonomy of the feminine identity and the place of the proper sexuality, what causes an exclusion the direction of "being woman" in a society where they are considered inferior and that it only has little time this left of being submiss to the man, conquering its right the diverse aspects politicians, social and cultural. In the second moment not of poverty, but for living less in a community favored what it takes it the lack of possibilities of the proper citizen of not consisting internally and not to have conditions to change this picture. Inside to the device of psicanalitic listening the present work is about a case study where an interview of the clinical type was carried through where the speech of the citizen was marked by the emotional instability, affective insatisfaction and difficulty with regard to proper autonomy to deal with its identity and its sexuality. The identity of the woman through such information is molded to take care of to a system of familiar and social domination. The fear, the unreliability, the shame, in turn, extravasm to the sexual one for the performance in the social one, in a system of constant feedback. In this context we insert the woman and its search, through the time, of a feminine identity. E this search modifies, takes to a transformation with regard to notion of nuclear family and romantic love. It is certain that of this form it looks for in a way if to adjust in the society and life in an acceptable way I obtain same.

A comunicação do amor romântico no pop-rock brasileiro: um estudo do imaginário nos processos criativos de Erasmo Carlos, Rita Lee, Lobão e Pato Fu / The communication of romantic love in the Brazilian pop-rock: a study about the imaginary in the creative process of Erasmo Carlos, Rita Lee, Lobão e Pato Fu

No. of bitstreams: 1 Silvio Antonio Luiz Anaz.pdf: 3321084 bytes, checksum: 4875c8d29f817f8ad5a0cd6f2339195a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-12-06 / Romantic love is one of the most habitual subjects in the international pop-rock songs since the 1950 s. It is a regular topic in the Brazilian pop-rock songs in the same period, too. Those Brazilian and international pop-rock songs have built a romantic love imaginary that has been disseminated by the cultural industry and mass communication media. In this research, we look for understanding the processes that have participated in the building of the Brazilian pop-rock songs imaginary, based on their lyrics and music, and in the histories, tastes, world visions and networks of a group of Brazilians composers that are representatives of this kind of song. This research looks for understanding through the imaginary the cultural identification process established among the composers and the audience of these songs. The mapping of romantic love imaginaries and the investigation of their construction processes can be revealing of a individual feeling of sharing and belongingness to specific imaginaries in the songs universe. The hypothesis is that the Brazilian pop-rock imaginary is produced by world visions convergence and by seduction, cultural identification and adhesion of composers and audiences to a specific musical ethos, that transcend boarders and result in an aesthetic, ethic and behavior approximation between Brazilian and international pop-rock songs. The investigation maps the romantic love imaginaries in the international pop-rock hits, in the second half of 20th century, and that built in the Erasmo Carlos, Rita Lee, Lobão and Pato Fu songs, Brazilian composers representatives of these musical genres in the same period. The investigation looks for identifying, using a semantic romantic love mapping, what are the main symbolical elements in these imaginaries that came from the creative processes of Brazilian composers, and became references of the approaching between Brazilian and international pop-rock songs. The theoretical reference in this research brings authors in the imaginary field, such as Gilbert Durand and Michel Maffesoli, semiotics, such as Charles Sanders Peirce, Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco, and culture and communications, such as Jesus Martín-Barbero and Stuart Hall. The conclusion shows how songs and creative processes of Brazilian composers built a romantic love imaginary that could be a expression of the feeling of belongingness and cultural identification process, that brings closer local and global aesthetics, ethics and behaviors established by successful songs / O amor romântico é um dos temas mais presentes no pop-rock internacional de maior sucesso desde os anos 1950.

No. of bitstreams: 1 VergasVAS.pdf: 346048 bytes, checksum: ff36ecd8cd1debb1611fd02d05c352ea (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-05-31 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / Romantic love constitutes a central value in the social imaginary of modern societies and with reflexes in today s society. This is because the romantic expectation of realization of love appears, in the majority of cases, as a guarantee of completeness and happiness of individuals. However, the ideal of romantic love imposes a series of demands and character roles that are not easy, in modern age, to be brought about into practice by the ones in love. And, it is in this sense that possible conflicts appear between the romantic proposition and the practical reality of contemporary love. Consequently, the possibility of suffering from love emerges because of these propositions. Initiating from these presumptions, this paper aims to study the contemporary forms of representation and expression of love and of the suffering because of love, through the course of love in the life of some men and women, residents of Natal/RN, that live and/or have lived emotional-sexual relationships, observing the relationship that can be established between suffering from love and the ideal romantic love / O amor rom?ntico constituiu-se num valor central no imagin?rio social das sociedades modernas, tendo seus reflexos, at? hoje, nas sociedades contempor?neas.

Qu?o romance ? minha vida amorosa! : namoro virtual e narrativas

No. of bitstreams: 1 VergasVAS_TESE.pdf: 3797183 bytes, checksum: a230fe58f7c325737569d93a5fe23553 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-25 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / This research aims to acknowledge the virtual dating phenomenon. The research deals with this phenomenon in Orkut, a social networking website. Thus, it considers debates and forums that were present in a Brazilian Orkut online community called Conheci meu amor pela internet (I met my love through the Internet). As a staring point the research dealt with issues such as: what are the debates about? How can we deal with practices that question their own dating process? According to the initial hypothesis, these debates reveal different contemporary social aspects: 1) they emerge as a response to demands on behalf of a society that is rather reflexive. This reflexive element is fundamental for the constitution of the self 2) these debates work as support elements in social relations that are built upon this sphere. In this context, individuals write about themselves and constitute themselves as real individuals that acquire a sense as subjects; and 3) people discuss online dating as form reconstructing former experiences. Empirical analysis demonstrates that these forums and polls present themselves as a social phenomenon that allows a particular form of self presentation on the internet. In order for these subjects to present themselves they built their own self narratives. What is possible to acknowledge considering these narratives is that there is a predominance of the element of intrigue that is further solved and demonstrate a satisfactory result. These narrators then choose online dating situation that present happy endings and happiness that are associated to romantic ideals that are worthwhile being shown. The contents present in these narratives are dealt with by the research. Thus, this work defends the thesis that the online dating narratives are a mixture of facts and fiction once all experiences deal with romantic imaginary as well as personal dating experience. Thus, the research is an attempt to understand what goes on the forums and debates that deal with the fictionalized and dramatized daily experiences in the performances that are similar to games. This is possible due to the fact that there is use of romantic fables and concrete experiences realized by online dating / A pesquisa se prop?e a estudar o fen?meno do namoro virtual atrav?s da observa??o do Orkut, rede social on-line.
