Ta en stol och sätt dig i soffan i ett hörn mitt på golvet! : Om den fysiska miljön i skolan med fokus på IKT / Grab a chair and take a seat on the sofa in a corner in the middle of the floor! : Schools physical environment focused on ICT

Ekelund, Kristin, Franzén, Petra January 2004 (has links)

Investigating the structural barriers to equal education in Oregon : how laws, rhetoric & values translate into practice

Ludvik, Tracey L. 07 November 2003 (has links)
This study helps to answer the broader question of why Latino students across the U.S. persistently drop out of school at the highest rates compared to students of other racial groups by focusing on the institutional workings of the various levels of the Oregon school system. Latino students have the highest drop out rates in Oregon. The higher drop out rates for Latino students in Oregon reflect the national trend, though the latest national rates report considerably higher drop out rates for Latino students compared to Oregon's drop out rates. Quantitative research verifies that race is a critical factor affecting national high school completion rates for Latino youth. The purpose of this study is to reveal the major, persistent problems within a school system that hinder learning for Latino students who are primarily English Language learners. Toward this purpose, this study examines significant state and federal education laws, examines rhetoric related to education equality and interviews educators at various levels of the Oregon education system. The research reveals three primary reasons for the failure of Oregon schools to graduate Latino students. First, these primarily Spanish-speaking students are not provided the type of quality bilingual intercultural education required to promote learning. Second, Latino students experience a discriminatory school environment. Third, available funding is not being used to help English language learners to succeed in learning the English language nor academic material. The research outcome is relevant because what was found in Oregon reflects patterns of educational practice and policy and laws that have been reported in other states, supporting the idea that educational racism is institutional at all levels of the education system. The research also reveals specific tactics used to repress the advancement of Latino students and finds that public rhetoric supporting education equality among the races does not reflect practice and procedures at all levels of the public school institution that determine outcomes for Latino students in their individual schools. Despite rhetoric to the contrary, educators are deciding not to make the necessary changes to improve education for Latinos. It is apparent that persistent inequality is the result of colonialist attitudes and policies that continue to restrict learning for the majority of the Latino population, limiting their opportunities for advancement beyond the poverty characteristic of their low wage working class status in the U.S. / Graduation date: 2004

The evaluation of school-based community conferences

Englot Stusick, Erib B., University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Education January 2007 (has links)
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a school-based Community Conferencing program utilized in response to student acts of misconduct or violence. The satisfaction levels of the various participants involved, the effects on suspension and expulsion rates, the rates of recidivism, the types and follow through of restoration agreements made, and the offences that respond best to Community Conferences were examined. Role-specific surveys were administered to the various participants in 12 Community Conferences with 105 surveys completed immediately following the Conference and 70 surveys completed via telephone four weeks after the completion of the Conference. Data were analyzed using descriptive, qualitative, and chi-square methods of analyses. This study provides evidence for the success and satisfaction of incorporating this type of restorative programming into current philosophies and policies within school divisions as an alternative to zero tolerance policies. Participants in various roles reported satisfaction with several aspects of the Conference and its outcome, positive personal changes resulting from the Conference, and positive experiences overall regarding participation. Additionally, a potential decrease in the use of suspension and expulsion, provides further support for its use. The findings of this study provide a baseline for satisfaction levels, types of restoration agreements made, and rates of recidivism regarding school-based Community Conferences. Results can aid in the process of decision-making for those considering the use of restorative programming in schools. Due to the high rates of overall satisfaction, the model used in this research by the Edmonton Public School Division, along with the suggestions made by the researcher, can provide a representation upon which others can base implementation of a similar program. / xv, 306 leaves ; 29 cm. --

An exploration of school cultures associated with good academic performance in two primary schools in Lesotho.

Rampai, Amelia Tantso. January 2009 (has links)
This case study was located in the qualitative research approach under interpretive paradigm. The study explored school cultures associated with good academic performance in two selected primary schools in Lesotho, which perform well academically. It aimed to find out the types of school cultures of those schools and how they sustain their cultures. These schools are located in the Leribe district around Maputsoe area. The study was conducted by means of semi-structured interviews. Eighteen teachers were interviewed. The intention was to interview ten teachers in each school, but two teachers in Maliba School declined. Observation and document analysis methods were used for data production and verification. The findings of the study revealed several aspects involved in striving for good academic performance. There were lots of similarities in the findings in both schools. They were categorized into themes namely, time management, rituals and ceremonies, relationships within the school, teaching and learning processes; and school improvement and development. The findings revealed that subject teaching is the most appropriate technique and teachers choose subjects according to their expertise, so that every teacher imparts knowledge to learners satisfactorily. This practice also allows the adoption of various methods. Teachers manage to attempt several lessons in a day successfully. The findings revealed that openness among the colleagues is important because they disclose their problems and get assisted. The conducive environment allows dedication and commitment to work. A support from the principal and colleagues which results from good relationships empowers teachers in their work. This study recommends that the government should allow subject specialization for primary teachers and they should be trained for that. Good time management should be part of school culture as well as commitment. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Edgewood, 2009.

Pathways and barriers to inclusion : a case study of a girls' only school of industry in South Africa.

Hortop, Mark. January 2001 (has links)
Since 1994 all education policy documents that have emerged in South Africa have stressed the principles of social justice and inclusion by foregrounding issues of equity, redress, quality education for all, equality of opportunity, and nondiscrimination. This study examined inclusionary and exclusionary attitudes and practices at a School of Industry for Girls in South Africa. The research was conducted in the qualitative research paradigm, and took the form of a small-scale ethnographic case study. The data collection techniques included observations and used observations, document analysis, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that learners experience various barriers to learning and participation that are clearly embedded in the ethos, curriculum and cultures of the school. Various discriminatory attitudes and practices play themselves out and reflect an intersection of racism, gender discrimination and ableism. The study points towards the need for management and staff in collaboration with learners to interrogate and work towards minimising these exclusionary attitudes and practices prevalent at the school. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2001.

Educating for peace at pre-school : a case study of Khulanathi educare centre.

Umurerwa, Blandine. January 2003 (has links)
Pre-schools, as the entry point to formal education are increasingly expected to play an invaluable role in the promotion of peace. As such, this study sets out to investigate the nature and extent to which one pre-school, namely Khulqnathi Educare Gentre in Pietermaritzburg (KEG), adheres to the 'peaceful schools' model with respect to its organization, curriculum, learning methods and the handling of conflict. The research approach taken in this study was qualitative and exploratory, relying on self-administered questionnaires, reviewing literature and documentary analysis. The researcher also spent some time at the school to observe day-to-day activities. Parents and teachers constituted the study's respondents. The study reveals an innovative approach to teaching at KEG in which peace education is treated as an integral part of the entire learning and teaching processes. This innovation gets impetus from the school's constitution, which endorses peace education. Peace values are promoted through the curriculum in general, and in particular, the teaching and learning methods and in the school's approaches to handling conflict. Peace education does not stand out as an explicit goal. Rather, it is an integral compc;ment of the four cornerstones of the KEG's learning and teaching processes. Approaches to resolving conflict through dialogue at the school further demonstrate the school's adherence to the peaceful school model. A close working relationship between the school staff and parents ensures that children are exposed to peace values both at home and at school. In summary, the questionnaires, observations and the school documents lead to the conclusion that KEG is closely conforms to the peaceful school model. The study also offers some general insights on peace education in pre-schools and some recommendations specifically meant for Khulanthi Educare's situation. / Thesis (M.Com.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2003.
