Boundaries in cyberpunk fiction : William Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy, Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix, and Neal Stephenson's Snow crash

Toerien, Michelle 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cyberpunk literature explores the effects that developments in technology will have on the lives of individuals in the future. Technology is seen as having the potential to be of benefit to society, but it is also seen as a dangerous tool that can be used to severely limit humanity's freedom. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it. The novels I discuss present different views concerning the nature of humanity's merging with technology. One view is that humanity is moving towards a posthuman future, while some argue that humanity is not discarded, but that these characters have merely evolved to the next step in the natural development of humankind. Both these views deal with constant change, a notion advocated by both postmodernism and cyberpunk.

No. of bitstreams: 1 ALTIEREZ.pdf: 2822931 bytes, checksum: 9d3fa6f1760fa9cf3521c702bd742288 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-07-22 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The Vale de Amanhecer, literally, Dawn Valley, is a genuine Brazilian religious movement that emerged after the 1960s in the Federal District (Brasília). The research aims to investigate the religious visual culture of the Dawn Valley as a key element of interpretation and construction of its postmodern religious narrative. It starts with the assumption that their iconography while using elements of science fiction is a new and unusual way to situate the contemporary considering aspects of cosmology of the twentieth century, to build an adapted religious narrative. As a theoretical framework we use the approach of Edgar Morin on the intersection of film and imaginary reflection of Joseph Campbell as the model for the hero or monomyth journey. The methodology proposed is from the proposal by Gillian Rose for the interpretation of visual culture. It is expected to highlight the importance of spirit and cinematic literary narratives of science fiction in the constitution of the pictorial narrative of the Dawn Valley and how it transformed this movement in one of the main religious phenomena that embraced the new cosmology.

[en] MIRRORS OF TIME: TRAVEL AND TRANSIENCE IN CINEMA NARRATIVES / [pt] ESPELHOS DO TEMPO: VIAGEM E TRANSITORIEDADE NAS NARRATIVAS CINEMATOGRÁFICAS

MARINA DE CASTRO FRID 24 August 2018 (has links)
A expressão viagem no tempo envolve significados diversos. / [en] This thesis analyzes representations of time travel in an ensemble of productions from the United States film industry. The purpose of this study is to understand the notions of time portrayed in the selected films and how these are related to modern-contemporary Western thought and practices. Specifically, the investigation focuses on movie pictures in which characters break from the chronology of a sequence of events or experience the same moment repeatedly. The term time travel involves diverse meanings. Therefore, the research effort begins by understanding its possible definitions. The first chapter reviews some of the theoretical strands about time in Western philosophical and scientific traditions. The second chapter explores interpretations about the phenomenon of myth and the history of science fiction. After delimiting and describing the selected material in the third chapter, the thesis proceeds to the textual analysis of films. The examination of the ensemble indicates three main issues related to time travel: cosmologies and images of the end of the world; objects as markers of and connections between different temporalities, and the questioning of social relations, above all, kinship. Each one of these issues is analyzed in the fourth chapter. The thesis demonstrates how films translate time in concrete terms through the trajectories of characters and their artifacts that, unbounded by the historical order, engender paradoxes, meetings, and mismatches in social life.

The odyssey of Dune : epic, archetype and the collective unconscious

Rafala, Carmelo 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines epic impressions between two disparate literary genres, the classical Homeric epic and the science fiction novel, Frank Herbert's Dune in particular. This is done by applying Jung's archetypes and his notion of the collective unconscious to both literary works. This thesis argues that, through intertextual dialogue, continuities can be seen to exist between the Homeric epic and Dune and other science fiction texts of a similar nature. Chapter one examines epic impressions through a study of the classical heroic superhuman. This superhuman, his birth, divine attributes and heroic adventures shall be isolated and applied to both the classical hero and the hero of Herbert's narrative. Chapter two will examine the relationship between prescience ("hyperawareness") and the divine oracle of the classical epic. Chapter three will examine the archetype of the "Terrible Mother" and the masculine fear of feminine powers that works to keep the feminine subordinate. / English Studies / M.A. (English)
