Marketing Communication Strategy for a Science Park

Luchina, Anna, Codazzi, Giacomo January 2019 (has links)
Background: World economy of the 21st century places high demands on national economic systems. Governments implement various initiatives to enable a more effective cooperation between universities and industries in order to increase competitiveness of their economies. Science Parks represent one type of such initiatives. It is assumed that they support regional economic growth by means of technology transfer from university to industry. Science Parks usually incorporate incubation programs, which enable creation of NTBFs by university staff and students. Science Parks have to ensure its organizational development by providing paid services, especially in form of incubator program. Therefore, Science Parks are regarded in our research as service companies. In order to enable creation of NTBFs Science Parks have to be able to attract talented researchers and students. In our research, we focus on students and consider them as potential customers for Science Parks. Previous research focusing on the problem of students’ attraction to these organizations is scarce. We implement marketing communication theory to address the problem of students’ attraction to Science Parks. Aim: Our research is set to identify content for a marketing communication strategy of a science park, which considers students as potential customers. Theoretical background/Methodology: In order to fulfill the aim of the research we implement case study strategy. We collected primary and secondary data. The case organization is presented by Dalarna Science Park (located in Borlänge, Sweden), where we collected secondary data. It was incorporated in our research as handout materials that enabled Focus Group discussions. Focus groups with students from Dalarna University presented the source of primary data. Question guideline for focus groups was based on principles of marketing communication theory, which we used as the primary theory of the research. Conclusions: Results indicate that students regard business incubator services of a Science Park as useful for those who have business ideas. It can be considered as positive prerequisite for a marketing communication strategy. In order to attract students with ideas of starting own ventures, a Science Park should engage students into various events, such as workshops, discussions and seminars. The organization should constantly inform students about its nature and activities and create an image of a young successful entrepreneur, which students are attracted to. For this purpose a Science Park can use Internet as means of both spreading its messages to students and enabling WOM recommendations among them.

Parques tecnológicos e centralidades urbanas : o caso do Tecnopuc na região metropolitana de Porto Alegre / Sciences Parks and Urban Centralities: The Tecnopuc in the Metropolitain Area of Porto Alegre

Hauser, Ghissia January 2016 (has links)
The main goal of this paper is to analyze the relationships between science parks, city and region through the case study of Tecnopuc, which is located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre. Sought to demonstrate that the restructuring by which the world economic system has been going through since the last decades of the 20th century has provoked the dispersion of big transnational corporation’s branches of the new economy in certain urban regions of the world, between them, the city of Porto Alegre and its metropolitan area. Many of these branches are located in science parks that are supported by public policies. It was verified that Porto Alegre and its metropolitan area, through the Porto Alegre Tecnopole Program, has promoted the installation of Tecnopuc and others science parks increasing the strategic relevance of the city of Porto Alegre, in the world network of cities. Based on the results of the questionnaire application and the interview with business leaders, It is shown that Tecnopuc shelters, besides branches of transnational companies, various local businesses of the new economy, generating innumerous global fluxes that attribute high informational density to their territory. It is also shown that Tecnopuc has mostly young male employees with high education. The mapping of the places of residence of these employees reveals that Tecnopuc reinforces existing centralities in the city and in the metropolis through two axes: one urban, in Porto Alegre, along the Ipiranga and Bento Gonçalves Avenues, with characteristics of a consolidated city; And the other metropolitan, along the BR-116, with characteristics of diffuse and fragmented city. In addition, the mapping shows that these young professionals, the main inputs of the new economy companies, prefer to live in centralized, consolidated neighborhoods with nightlife and urbanity.

Interorganisational knowledge flows between and innovative performance of science park firms : an exploratory study of South African new technology-based firms

Chan, Kai-Ying 25 August 2010 (has links)
The fast growth of science parks around the world has inspired many researchers to investigate the function and performance of science parks (SPs). Interestingly, mixed findings are reported on science park performance in the literature: some researchers found that SPs have benefits for the firms located on site; whereas other researchers doubt the benefits that SPs are claimed to have. This thesis aims to explain these mixed findings and proposes a relational approach to study the general view of interorganisational knowledge flows. The main research question to be answered is: How can the mixed findings of previous research studies regarding innovative performances of science park firms be explained? A sample of 52 new technology-based firms (NTBFs) situated in Gauteng was interviewed by means of structured questionnaires. Despite the fact that this research did not empirically confirm the theoretical explanation of the mixed findings found in science park literature, some issues raised in the recommendation section of this thesis could account for the mixed findings, namely differences in the scanning processes of new entrant firms, the nature of networking activities, services provided by SP management teams, academic-industry links and configurations of knowledge flows. The findings and recommendations of this study may help policy makers to further improve the design and functioning of science parks in emerging economies. / Thesis (PhD(Technology Management))--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) / unrestricted

How we belong : A qualitative study of 19 journeys to talent recruitment and beyond

Van Dongen, Bram, Galvis, Hela January 2021 (has links)
Background: There is a talent mismatch in Sweden. Companies are limited by a labour shortage, especially in the digital sector, and available talent has a low rate of hiring. Therefore, this study is focused on understanding the underlying reasons for this talent mismatch understanding it from an absorptive capacity process of knowledge and diversity in the digital sector. This research structure approaches this study by investigating the attraction, recruitment, development, and retention of talent in companies through an absorptive capacity lens. Aim: Broadening the understanding of why there is a mismatch between available talent and firms in Sweden. Methodology: A qualitative study method was done for the data collection and data analysis. Two clusters were created to explore the research process divided into companies and students. A proposed model was utilised to analyse the data and provide the results that confirmed different factors of the absorptive capacity process and the influence of diversity that serve to identify new findings. The thesis demonstrates that the absorptive capacity process can positively or negatively affect the influence of diversity in organisations. The factors that lead to these different outcomes are described in the various phases portrayed by the proposed model. However, the absorptive capacity process describes how people, in general, are retained in organisations and how the sense of belonging to the organisations is fundamental for a positive absorptive capacity process that leads to talent retention. Findings: Diversity related mechanisms that influence a match or mismatch between available talent and organisations. Keywords: Absorptive capacity process · Diversity · Employee life cycle · Knowledge integration· Science Parks

Valente, Antonio Carlos Marques January 2014 (has links)
With globalized economies, innovation assumes a fundamental role to economic and social development of the countries. It is from this perspective that technology parks are inserted with the purpose of coordinating the actors that composes a local innovation system in order to strengthen the innovative competences of a particular region. It is within this context that the ABC Paulista arises because it is an industrial area that has suffered changes in its productive sector in the 1990s with significant consequences for the local economy. Another point is the discussion, from the same decade, the structuring of a regional science park in order to replace the region into a new production, technological and economic paradigms but without positive results in this direction. On the other hand, there are local initiatives for structuring science parks in the region, more specifically in the cities of Santo André and São Bernardo do Campo. Therefore, this study aims to examine these initiatives and at the same time, measure the local innovation system and its articulation applying qualitative interviews, semi-structured and exploratory interviews and investigate the implications of structuring science parks can offer to the local innovation system in the point of view of the stakeholders of the local innovation system region and discuss challenges and opportunities to leverage local technological and innovative competences from the implementation of these enterprises. The main results of the research, the local innovation system is fragmented and disarticulated because the interaction among companies and educational institutions is inexpressive and even among themselves, seeking improvements and technological innovations. The companies agree with the implementation science parks in the region, however with a reactive attitude towards this issue, understanding that these initiatives should be triggered by the government, ignoring the efforts of these initiatives because they are tied to public and political sphere. Another point identified is the lack of available physical space and own financial resources for the implementation of these projects; the absence of a structured design; definition of technological skills; anchor companies and a managing team already set demonstrate that the projects are still embryonic. In contrast, the region has a diversified industrial base, some higher education institutions in the field of engineering and efforts to build and strengthen local productive arrangements, plus a regionality built over the past two decades can¿t be neglected, causing that these initiatives can be consolidated so that it is an element that can contribute to the strengthening and coordination of the local innovation system in the region.
