Determining temperature and drivers of heat in mechanical face seals

High heat in mechanical seals is a long-recognized main failure cause, disrupting the seal's vital lubricating film and heating temperature-sensitive process media. A way to accommodate the seal's heat generation is by choosing materials with high thermal conductivity, such as silicon carbide (SiC). In single-use and short operating time applications, the usage of SiC may be greatly over-dimensioned, unnecessarily environmentally intense, and expensive. There is a desire to apply other materials for these cases, but the heat generation of the mechanical seal poses great limitations in material selections.  The purpose of this study is to reduce the operating temperature of mechanical seals to enable the application of cheaper and more sustainable materials. The seals used for testing are presently used in Alfa Laval’s single-use separators, CultureOne, and accompanying this work is the designing of a temperature measuring rig for the specific mechanical seal to be tested in its applied environment. The following research questions have been formulated to concretize the presented problematization:     RQ1: Which parameters have the highest significance for generated heat in the single-use mechanical seal?   RQ2: How can the heat of the mechanical seal’s wear face be measured while operating in the CultureOne machine?    This study is deductive, intending to gather quantitative data through thermal measuring. The temperature measuring rig was designed with inspiration from previous similar studies and was then validated through repeated testing and comparisons with FEM-simulations of the tested case. This resulted in a detected temperature loss of 1°C, which has been accounted for in the conclusions. During validation tests, a standard original seal temperature to use as a comparison was found to be 41°C.    Heat-affecting parameters have been gathered and tested through the method of Design of Experiments (DoE), where a Placket-Burman design was chosen to enable testing 9 parameters with 12 tests. The results of the study indicate that surface roughness and sealing liquid temperature have significant effects on the seal temperature. Roughening the surface of the mechanical seal’s polished, static carbon face, as achieved with a 1000-grit abrasive paper, provided a heat mitigating effect of -9.3 °C, which is a 23% heat reduction. Similarly, introducing more cooling power to the system by cooling the sealing liquid with external methods such as an ice bath provided a heat-reducing effect of -5.4 °C at the end of a one-hour test, reducing the temperature with 13%. Combining the parameters provided a 36% reduction in heat for a one-hour run with the mechanical seal in the CultureOne Primo machine. Thus, the temperature-reducing strategies discovered in this study can be applied to enable more sustainable and cheaper material selections for mechanical face seals. / Hög temperatur i plantätningar är sedan länge uppmärksammat som en huvudsaklig haveriorsak eftersom det i många fall leder till att den smörjande vätskefilmen störs. En åtgärd för att avlägsna tätningens värme är att välja material med hög värmeledningsförmåga, som exempelvis kiselkarbid. Vid engångsapplikationer och andra tillämpningsområden med kort tid i användning har kiselkarbidtätningar ofta en överdimensionerad livslängd samtidigt som materialet är både miljöpåfrestande och dyrt i jämförelse med andra material. Således finns behovet att byta material hos tätningar i dessa applikationer, men värmegenereringen utgör hinder och begränsar alternativen i materialvalet.    Målet med denna studie är att sänka temperaturen hos mekaniska plantätningar för att möjliggöra val av billigare och miljövänligare material. Tätningarna som används för studiens experiment sitter i Alfa Lavals engångsseparator, CultureOne. Till denna studie hör framtagandet av en metod och testuppställning för att mäta temperaturen hos dessa tätningar under drift i sin tillämpade miljö. Utifrån problematiken har följande forskningsfrågor formulerats:    FF1: Vilka parametrar har störst signifikans för värmegenerering i engångstätningarna?    FF2: Hur kan temperaturen av plantätningarnas nötningsyta mätas under drift i CultureOne-maskinen?   Studien är av deduktiv natur, med insamling av primärt kvantitativa data genom temperaturmätningar. Metoden för temperaturmätning togs fram med stöd i mätmetoder från andra studier på tätningar, och mätvärdenas riktighet validerades genom kalibreringssteg, tester och jämförelser med FEM-simuleringar av tätningen. Under kalibreringen detekterades en värmeförlust på 1°C mellan uppmätt temperatur och sann temperatur av tätningens nötningsyta, vilket kompenseras för i slutsatserna. Under normala körförhållanden mättes tätningens temperatur till 41°C vilket användes som utgångspunkt att jämföra med senare experiment.    Värmegenererande parametrar för tätningar har sammanställts och testats genom en statistisk försöksplanering, där en Placket-Burman-design implementerades. Resultaten visar att ytfinhet och temperatur av tätningsvätska har signifikanta effekter för tätningens temperatur. Genom att skapa en grövre yta för plantätningens statiska halvas nötningsyta, som uppnått med ett sandpapper av finhet K1000, har en värmesänkning på -9.3 °C, motsvarande en 23% sänkning av utgångstemperaturen, uppnåtts för tätningen efter en timmes drift. På liknande sätt resulterade kylning av tätningsvätskan i en värmesänkning på -5.4 °C, vilket är 13% svalare än utgångstemperaturen. Tillsammans bidrar parametrarna till en 36% lägre temperatur hos plantätningen efter en timmes drift i CultureOne Primo-maskinen. Således skulle de testade strategierna för att sänka plantätningars temperatur kunna användas för att möjliggöra valet av miljövänligare och billigare material.

Lifetime Prediction and Durability of Elastomeric Seals for Fuel Cell Applications

Polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell (FC) stacks require elastomeric gaskets for each cell to keep the reactant gases within their respective regions[1]. If any gasket degrades or fails, the reactant gases can leak or mix with each other directly during operation or standby, affecting the overall operation and performance of the FC. The elastomeric gaskets used as FC seals are exposed to a range of environmental conditions, and concurrently, subjected to mechanical compression between the bipolar plates forming the cell. The combination of mechanical stress and environmental exposure may result in degradation of the seal material[2] over a period of time. In order to address the durability and make reliability predictions, the long-term stability of the gaskets in FC assemblies is critical. The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of elastomeric seals in a simulated FC environment in the presence of mechanical stresses. The overall scope of the study includes mechanical and viscoelastic properties characterization, and lifetime durability predictions based on an accelerated characterization approach. With the help of finite element analysis software, ABAQUS, a fixture was designed to perform strain-based accelerated characterization of seal material in air, deionized (DI) water, 50v/50v ethylene glycol/water solution, and 0.1M sulfuric acid solution. Dogbone samples were strained to different levels in the custom fixture and submerged in liquid solutions at 90°C and in air at 90°C and 120°C. It was observed that mechanical properties such as tensile strength, strain to break, 100% modulus, crosslink density, and tensile set degrade due to aging and the extent of change (increase or decrease) depends significantly on the strain level on the specimen. Trouser tear tests were conducted on reinforced specimens in air and deionized water (DI) to evaluate the tear resistance of an elastomeric seal material intended for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Plots relating the crack growth rate with tearing energy were obtained at various temperatures and provided significant insight into the rate and temperature dependence of the tearing strength of the seal material. Stick-slip crack propagation was observed at all temperatures and loading rates, although the behavior was suppressed significantly at low loading rates and high temperatures. Crack growth rate versus tearing energy data at different temperatures was shifted to construct a master curve and an estimate on the threshold value of tear energy was obtained which may be helpful in designing components where material tear is of concern. Strain energy release rate (SERR) value, calculated using the J-integral approach for a pre-existing crack in ABAQUS, was used to estimate the crack growth rate in a given seal cross-section to predict lifetime. In order to assess the viscoelastic behavior and to investigate the long term stress relaxation behavior of the seal material, compression stress relaxation (CSR) tests were performed on molded seals, called as SMORS, over a range of environmental conditions using a custom-designed fixture. The effect of temperature and environment was evident on material property changes and presented in terms of momentary properties and stress relaxation behavior. Various mechanisms involved in material degradation, chain scission and crosslinking, were suggested and insights were gained into how cure state and level of antidegradants in a material dictate the material behavior during the first phase of environmental exposure leading to change in material properties. Ring samples made of silicone were also tested using the fixture to obtain insight additional into material degradation due to aging. Results presented from testing on SMORS showed a lot more variation in data as compared to neat silicone rings due to the complexity involved in making SMORS. For understanding the deformation behavior of an elastomeric seal and its sealing performance, finite element characterization of seal cross-section was carried out on O-ring and SMORS cross-section. The effect of a seal's layout on distribution and magnitude of contact stresses and contact width was investigated for the O-ring and the information obtained thereby helped to analyze a complex assembly such as SMORS, where several interfaces and boundary conditions are involved. Stress/strain profiles were generated to visualize their concentration and distribution in the seal cross-section. Frictionless and rough interfacial conditions between seal material and platens were assumed and it was found that its effect on contact width and peak contact pressure was insignificant. Results obtained from FEA on SMORS were validated through comparison with contact mechanics approach and experimental data and it was found that Lindley's equation correlates well with experimental data whereas ABAQUS overestimates the load values at a given compression. Lindley's approach may be used to develop contact pressure profiles that may help estimate peak contact pressure at a given time so leaking can be avoided. / Ph. D.

Spatial ecology of marine top predators

Species distribution maps can provide important information to focus conservation efforts and enable spatial management of human activities. Two sympatric marine predators, grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), have overlapping ranges but contrasting population dynamics around the UK; whilst grey seals have generally increased, harbour seals have shown significant regional declines. A robust analytical methodology was developed to produce maps of grey and harbour seal usage estimates with corresponding uncertainty, and scales of spatial partitioning between the species were found. Throughout their range, both grey and harbour seals spend the majority of their time within 50 km of the coast. The scalability of the analytical approach was enhanced and environmental information to enable spatial predictions was included. The resultant maps have been applied to inform consent and licensing of marine renewable developments of wind farms and tidal turbines. For harbour seals around Orkney, northern Scotland, distance from haul out, proportion of sand in seabed sediment, and annual mean power were important predictors of space-use. Utilising seal usage maps, a framework was produced to allow shipping noise, an important marine anthropogenic stressor, to be explicitly incorporated into spatial planning. Potentially sensitive areas were identified through quantifying risk of exposure of shipping traffic to marine species. Individual noise exposure was predicted with associated uncertainty in an area with varying rates of co-occurrence. Across the UK, spatial overlap was highest within 50 km of the coast, close to seal haul outs. Areas identified with high risk of exposure included 11 Special Areas of Conservation (from a possible 25). Risk to harbour seal populations was highest, affecting half of all SACs associated with the species. For 20 of 28 animals in the acoustic exposure study, 95% CI for M-weighted cumulative Sound Exposure Levels had upper bounds above levels known to induce Temporary Threshold Shift. Predictions of broadband received sound pressure levels were underestimated on average by 0.7 dB re 1μPa (± 3.3). An analytical methodology was derived to allow ecological maps to be quantitatively compared. The Structural Similarity (SSIM) index was enhanced to incorporate uncertainty from underlying spatial models, and a software algorithm was developed to correct for internal edge effects so that loss of spatial information from the map comparison was limited. The application of the approach was demonstrated using a case study of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus, Linneaus 1758) in the Mediterranean Sea to identify areas where local-scale differences in space-use between groups and singleton whales occurred. SSIM is applicable to a broad range of spatial ecological data, providing a novel tool for map comparison.

The development of accounting in Palestine during the first millennium : 1000-332 BC

The chief aims of this study are to determine what, if any, accounting processes were employed during the first millennium BC (1000-332 BC) in Palestine, to determine whether these were the result of the socio-economic requirements of the various centralised polities operative in Palestine during this period, how these processes developed over the course of the first millennium and whether they conform to the definition of accounting provided in Chapter One. I have adopted an archaeological, epigraphic and qualitative approach taking into consideration the historical and socio-economic backgrounds of the different political administrations in control during the period under discussion. The evidence demonstrates that the adopted processes can be regarded as accounting processes since they conform to at least three of the four components of the definition of accounting and that these processes developed over the course of time depending on the particular requirements of the ruling authority. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Biblical Archaeology)

Evaluation of adhesion properties in bitumen-aggregate systems for winter surfacing seals using the bitumen bond strength test

Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Flexible pavement designers have a choice of two wearing course: either asphalt concrete or surfacing seals. The latter have been widely used by several countries as their preferred wearing course over other methods, especially countries with a limited number of average inhabitants per square kilometre. Moreover, the surfacing seals were identified as an efficient cost effective road preventive maintenance technique. Surfacing seals in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia cover about 65%, 80% and 90% of their surfaced road networks respectively. The preference of surfacing seals is due to their competitive initial cost and ease of construction. In South Africa, the life expectancy of surfacing seals varies between 8 and 12 years with an average of 10 years. This has not been the case in a number of surfacing seals constructed in winter, especially when the night recorded temperature is below 10oC. The dominant failure mechanism is ravelling (chip loss) soon after construction due to traffic loading. This chip loss is linked to the poor adhesion bond development rate in the bitumen-aggregate system during winter adverse conditions. In order to address the issue of premature chip loss the need for the development of a robust adhesion test method was identified. For that purpose, recently, researchers in the bitumen industry developed the Bitumen Bond Strength test method. This method was used in this study. This study intends to contribute to the understanding of binder-aggregate adhesion bond development for winter surfacing seals using the BBS test. Binder type, precoat type and conditioning, aggregate type and curing time are amongst the factors influencing winter seals adhesion bond performance. An experimental matrix involving three types of binder, two types of aggregate, four different precoating fluids, two precoat conditionings and two binder-curing times were then developed and investigated. Winter weather parameters affecting adhesion properties were also taken into consideration during the course of the investigation. Throughout the test, the procedure described in AASHTO TP 91-11 was followed. However, in order to enhance the control of the binder application temperature, a new method for hot applied binder sample preparation was developed as part of this study. The findings show that there is a significant difference between adhesion properties of the hot applied binders (70/100 and S-E1) and the emulsion (SC-E1). In most of the cases, the hot applied binders performed better than the emulsion. The failure mode observed was found to be linked to the condition of the precoating. The influence of the precoat type and conditioning, and effect of binder curing time were significantly highlighted. The use of a dry precoat benefited the adhesion bond strength up to around 50% relatively to the corresponding non-precoated combination. However, a decrement in the bond strength due to precoating of up to 28.7% was also observed. A statistical analysis using ANOVA did not illustrate any statistical significant effect of the aggregate type. The interaction effects analysis using ANOVA revealed the aggregate type interacting with precoat type to be the most influential interaction at level two. The precoat conditioning implication to the adhesion development rate, which influences the time for opening to traffic after construction, was illustrated. Insightful aspects on the compatibility between the binder type and precoat type and conditioning during the aggregate precoating practices and on the time for opening to traffic are highlighted. Finally, the repeatability analysis proved the BBS test to be a repeatable testing method with caution. Recommendations for further studies that could support the conclusions drawn in this study were provided. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Buigbare plaveiselontwerpers het 'n keuse van twee deklae: óf Asfalt of oppervlak seëls. Verder, is die seëls geïdentifiseer as 'n doeltreffende koste-effektiewe deklaag tegniek. Oppervlakseëls in Nieu-Seeland, Suid-Afrika en Australië dek ongeveer 65%, 80% en 90% van hul padnetwerke onderskeidelik. Hierdie studie beoog om by te dra tot die begrip van bindmiddel-klip kleefontwikkeling vir die winter seëls dmv die BBS toets. Die faktore, insluitend maar nie beperk tot bindmiddeltipe, voorafdekking (“PRECOAT”) -tipe en kondisionering, aggregaattipe en kuurtyd beïnvloed winter seëls se kleefeienskappe. 'n Eksperimentele matriks met drie tipes bindmiddels, twee tipes aggregate, vier verskillende voorafdekking-vloeistowwe, twee voorafdekking kondisionering en twee bindmiddel kuurtye is toe ontwikkel en ondersoek. Winter weer parameters wat kleefeienskappe beïnvloed is ook in ag geneem tydens die verloop van die ondersoek. Regdeur die studie is die prosedure AASHTO TP 91-11 gevolg, maar ten einde die beheer van die bindmiddel spuittemperatuur te verbeter, is ‘n nuwe metode vir warmspuit-bindmonsters voorbereiding ontwikkel as deel van hierdie studie. Die bevindinge toon dat daar 'n beduidende verskil tussen die kleefeienskappe van die warm aangewende bindmiddels (70/100 en S-E1) en die emulsie (SC-E1) is. In die meeste van die gevalle het die warmspuit-bindmiddels beter as emulsie gevaar. Daar is gevind dat die swigtingsmeganisme verbind word met die toestand van die voorafdekking. Die invloed van voorafdekkingtipe, kondisionering, en die effek van bindmiddelkuurtyd is duidelik uitgelig. Die gebruik van droë voorafdekking het die kleefkrag tot sowat 50% verhoog relatief tot die ooreenstemmende onbedekte klipkombinasie. Daar is egter ook ‘n verlaging van die kleefkrag weens voorafdekking gevind van tot so hoog soos 28,7 persent. Die statistiese ontleding met behulp van ANOVA het geen statisties beduidende effek van die verksillende aggregaattipe te vore gebring nie. Die interaksie-effek analise, met behulp van ANOVA, het wel die interaksie met voorafdekkingtipe met aggregaat die mees invloedryke bevestig. Die voorafdekking kondisioneering het ver rykende kleefkrag implikasies bloot gelê, wat die tyd vir die opening van die verkeer na konstruksie beïnvloed. Insigwekkende aspekte oor die versoenbaarheid tussen die bindmiddeltipe, voorafdekkingtipe, kondisionering, voorafdekkingpraktyk en tyd tot opening vir verkeer word uitgelig. Ten slotte, die herhaalbaarheidsanalise het die BBS toets as 'n herhaalbare toetsmetode met omsigtigheid bewys. Daar is aanbevelings tot verdere studies, wat uit die gevolgtrekking gekom het, gemaak.

Ontogenèse de la recherche alimentaire durant la phase juvénile : cas des prédateurs plongeurs / Ontogeny of foraging behaviour during the early life of deep diving predators

La période juvénile d’espèces longévives demeure peu connue malgré son importance pour la démographie et la conservation des populations. L’objectif de cette thèse a été d’étudier le comportement de dispersion et de nourrissage de 52 juvéniles de trois espèces de prédateurs marins plongeurs des Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (les manchots royaux, les manchots empereurs et les éléphants de mer du Sud) pendant quasiment 1 an après leur indépendance. L’approche a été basée sur l’utilisation de balises retransmettant en direct la localisation et des données de plongée. Les juvéniles de ces trois espèces présentèrent des dispersions sur de très grandes distances dans l’Océan Austral, avec au départ des composantes d‘orientation semblant en partie innées. Le rôle des courants océaniques et des zones frontales est apparu important. Les juvéniles montrèrent aussi une ségrégation spatiale prononcée avec les adultes. Les juvéniles présentèrent d‘impressionnantes capacités de plongée seulement quelques jours après leur départ. Cependant, si leurs capacités de plongée et d‘acquisition de nourriture augmentèrent progressivement avec le temps, elles n‘atteignirent jamais totalement les capacités des adultes. Certains juvéniles ne parvinrent pas à augmenter ces capacités alors que leur environnement devint moins favorable et apparemment décédèrent en mer, vraisemblablement par inanition. La première année en mer apparait alors comme une phase critique puisqu'une mortalité apparente fut observée pour chaque espèce. Cette thèse apporte des éléments de compréhension nouveaux sur l’ontogenèse de la dispersion et de la recherche alimentaire des prédateurs marins plongeurs. / The juvenile phase of long lived-species is poorly understood despite its critical importance for the future of animal populations. Thanks to new bio-technologies, in this thesis we managed to monitor the ontogeny of foraging behaviour in 52 juveniles from 3 deep-diving marine predator species (king penguins, emperor penguins and southern elephant seals) in the French Southern territories over the first year after their independence. The juveniles of these 3 species showed a very large dispersion range over huge distances in the Southern Ocean. Their dispersion was characterized at departure by partially innate behaviour in their orientation preferences. Juveniles showed a strong dependency to the local oceanic currents orientation and frontal zones. More, they showed a spatial segregation with adults. Juveniles were quickly able to dive very deep. Their diving and foraging skills increased progressively with time. However, juveniles never completely reached the efficiency of adults, even after one year at sea. Some juveniles did not manage to increase their foraging skills while their environment became less productive; these juveniles may have died at sea, probably because of starvation. The first year at sea appears thus to be critical for the 3 studied species, as substantial mortality occurred in each case. This thesis presents new information about the ontogeny of dispersion and the foraging behaviour in marine deep-diving predators.

Niche partitioning among fur seals

At Cape Gantheaume, Kangaroo Island (South Australia), adult male, lactating female and juvenile New Zealand (NZ) and Australian fur seals regularly return to the same colony, creating the potential for intra- and inter-specific foraging competition in nearby waters. I hypothesised that these demographic groups would exhibit distinct foraging strategies, which reduce competition and facilitate their coexistence. I analysed the diet of adult male, adult female and juvenile NZ fur seals and adult male Australian fur seals and studied the diving behaviour of adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals and the at-sea movements of juvenile, adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals. Female diet reflected that of a generalist predator, influenced by prey availability and their dependant pups� fasting abilities. In contrast, adult male NZ and Australian fur seals used larger and more energy-rich prey, most likely because they could more efficiently access and handle such prey. Juvenile fur seals primarily utilised small lantern fish, which occur south of the shelf break, in pelagic waters. Juveniles undertook the longest foraging trips and adult males conducted more lengthy trips than lactating females, which perform relatively brief trips in order to regularly nurse their pups. Unlike lactating females, some adult males appeared to rest underwater by performing dives that were characterised by a period of passive drifting through the water column. The large body sizes of adult males and lactating females facilitated the use of both benthic and pelagic habitats, but adult males dived deeper and for longer than lactating females, facilitating vertical separation of their foraging habitats. Spatial overlap in foraging habitats among the age/sex groups was minimal, because lactating females typically utilised continental shelf waters and males used deeper water over the shelf break, beyond female foraging grounds. Furthermore, juveniles used pelagic waters, up to 1000 km south of the regions used by lactating females and adult males. The age and sex groups in this study employed dramatically different strategies to maximise their survival and reproductive success. Their prey and foraging habitats are likely to be shaped by body size differences, which determine their different physiological constraints and metabolic requirements. Niche partitioning among fur seals

At Cape Gantheaume, Kangaroo Island (South Australia), adult male, lactating female and juvenile New Zealand (NZ) and Australian fur seals regularly return to the same colony, creating the potential for intra- and inter-specific foraging competition in nearby waters. I hypothesised that these demographic groups would exhibit distinct foraging strategies, which reduce competition and facilitate their coexistence. I analysed the diet of adult male, adult female and juvenile NZ fur seals and adult male Australian fur seals and studied the diving behaviour of adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals and the at-sea movements of juvenile, adult male and lactating female NZ fur seals. Female diet reflected that of a generalist predator, influenced by prey availability and their dependant pups� fasting abilities. In contrast, adult male NZ and Australian fur seals used larger and more energy-rich prey, most likely because they could more efficiently access and handle such prey. Juvenile fur seals primarily utilised small lantern fish, which occur south of the shelf break, in pelagic waters. Juveniles undertook the longest foraging trips and adult males conducted more lengthy trips than lactating females, which perform relatively brief trips in order to regularly nurse their pups. Unlike lactating females, some adult males appeared to rest underwater by performing dives that were characterised by a period of passive drifting through the water column. The large body sizes of adult males and lactating females facilitated the use of both benthic and pelagic habitats, but adult males dived deeper and for longer than lactating females, facilitating vertical separation of their foraging habitats. Spatial overlap in foraging habitats among the age/sex groups was minimal, because lactating females typically utilised continental shelf waters and males used deeper water over the shelf break, beyond female foraging grounds. Furthermore, juveniles used pelagic waters, up to 1000 km south of the regions used by lactating females and adult males. The age and sex groups in this study employed dramatically different strategies to maximise their survival and reproductive success. Their prey and foraging habitats are likely to be shaped by body size differences, which determine their different physiological constraints and metabolic requirements. I suggest that these physiological constraints and the lactation constraints on females are the primary factors that reduce competition, thereby facilitating niche partitioning.

The development of accounting in Palestine during the first millennium : 1000-332 BC

The chief aims of this study are to determine what, if any, accounting processes were employed during the first millennium BC (1000-332 BC) in Palestine, to determine whether these were the result of the socio-economic requirements of the various centralised polities operative in Palestine during this period, how these processes developed over the course of the first millennium and whether they conform to the definition of accounting provided in Chapter One. I have adopted an archaeological, epigraphic and qualitative approach taking into consideration the historical and socio-economic backgrounds of the different political administrations in control during the period under discussion. The evidence demonstrates that the adopted processes can be regarded as accounting processes since they conform to at least three of the four components of the definition of accounting and that these processes developed over the course of time depending on the particular requirements of the ruling authority. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / M.A. (Biblical Archaeology)
