The pedagogical use of ICTs for teaching and learning within grade eight mathematics in South African schools / V. Cassim

Cassim, Verona January 2010 (has links)
Information and communication technology (ICT) has become part of education as it has, in many cases, become the mode of choice of communication with people in all spheres of life. It provides teachers with the opportunity to access information from a vast array of resources that assists them in their teaching practices. Education in South Africa is constantly transforming to new requirements from the National Department of Education (NDoE). The fundamentals of Outcomes Based Education are lifelong learning and the development of 21st century skills that allow learners to use information for different contexts. ICT enables teachers and learners to access computer systems to develop skills, interact with their peers, colleagues, and the global society. Even though teachers know the value of ICT in teaching and learning, the pedagogical use of ICT in South African schools remains limited. In the SITES 2006, South African teachers acknowledged that they were enthusiastic to explore new ways to make teaching and learning more interesting, but that they encountered many barriers that hinder the pedagogical use of ICT for mathematics. This research has determined that the teachers’ ICT pedagogical knowledge contributed towards more effective teaching and learning practices of mathematics in South African schools. The study also describes how insufficient ICT pedagogical knowledge affected teachers’ confidence to explore ICT tools. This study followed a secondary data analysis (SDA) of the Second International Information Technology in Education Study of 2006 (SITES 2006) data from the 640 participating mathematics teachers in South Africa. The correlated data describes the technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) of mathematics teachers while making use of ICT. Continuous professional teacher development is required to focus on the attainment of information technology pedagogical knowledge to further the use of ICT on the teaching of Mathematics. The study also indicates that South Africa lags far behind the other 22 countries that participated in SITES 2006. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2011.

Family-centered Care Delivery: Comparing Models of Primary Care Service Delivery in Ontario

Mayo-Bruinsma, Liesha 04 May 2011 (has links)
Family-centered care (FCC) focuses on considering the family in planning/implementing care and is associated with increased patient satisfaction. Little is known about factors that influence FCC. Using linear mixed modeling and Generalized Estimating Equations to analyze data from a cross-sectional survey of primary care practices in Ontario, this study sought to determine whether models of primary care service delivery differ in their provision of FCC and to identify characteristics of primary care practices associated with FCC. Patient-reported scores of FCC were high, but did not differ significantly among primary care models. After accounting for patient characteristics, practice characteristics were not significantly associated with patient-reported FCC. Provider-reported scores of FCC were significantly higher in Community Health Centres than in Family Health Networks. Higher numbers of nurse practitioners and clinical services on site were associated with higher FCC scores but scores decreased as the number of family physicians at a site increased.

Rehabilitation Therapy Services For Older Long–Stay Clients in the Ontario Home Care System

Armstrong, Joshua J. 24 January 2013 (has links)
BACKGROUND Rehabilitation therapies are effective for older persons in home-based settings, and have the potential to save money for the health system, while also improving the quality of life for older adults who may otherwise be hospitalized or institutionalized. Although there is evidence that home-based rehabilitation can improve functional outcomes in older adults, research has shown that many older home care clients do not receive the rehabilitation services they need. Despite the home care sector’s increasing importance within Ontario’s health care system, we have a limited understanding of the population that currently utilizes these services and how these services are allocated in the province. This dissertation project aims to enhance the understanding of this domain using a large provincial data repository of home care client information (RAI-HC information system). METHODS Using the Andersen-Newman Framework to guide this research from a conceptual standpoint, and combining it with the CRoss Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) as an organizational framework, this dissertation focuses on examining data collected on older long-stay home care clients. Prior to the data mining modeling procedures, knowledge of the rehabilitation services in home care was developed through a series of semi-structured interviews with key informants. The results of this qualitative study were then used to inform quantitative analyses that included creating rehabilitation service user profiles using the K-means clustering algorithm, and the development of predictive models of rehabilitation service provision using a Random forest algorithm and multilevel models. RESULTS Older home care clients who receive occupational therapy and physiotherapy in the Ontario Home Care System form a complex and heterogeneous client population. These services are often provided to clients following an acute event, yet many older adults who could benefit from therapy services for functional improvement and maintenance are not provided services due to limited resources. K-means clustering analyses resulted in the creation of seven profiles of rehab service users illustrating the multidimensional diversity of the service user population. Predictive models were able to identify client characteristics that are commonly associated with service provision. These models confirmed the large amount of regional variation found across the province and highlighted the differences between factors that lead to occupational therapy and physiotherapy service provision. CONCLUSIONS Using multiple methods to systematically examine rehabilitation services for long-stay clients, new insights into the current user population and the client characteristics related to service provision were obtained. Future research activities should focus on ways to use the regularly collected standardized data to identify older long-stay home care clients who would benefit most from the rehabilitation therapy services provided by the provincial home care system.

An ecological mixed methods study of youth with learning disabilities: exploring personal and familial influences on mental health

Lawrence, Breanna Catherine 27 August 2018 (has links)
There is a notable overlap and co-occurrence of mental health and learning challenges among school-aged youth. Existing research highlights associations between learning disabilities (LD) and mental health problems; however, there has been little exploration of additional variables, such as familial influences, that represent multiple levels of influence (Cen & Aytac, 2016). From a developmental relational systems framework (Overton, 2015), advancing the understanding of familial influences on youth development is crucial. Using a mixed methods design, the present study examined the influences of parent depression, parenting behaviours, family functioning, and youth social and emotional competencies on symptoms of anxiety and depression among youth with LD. Addressing two hypotheses, the quantitative Study 1 aimed to identify factors associated with mediating effects on internalized distress in 14- and 15-year-old youth with LD using secondary analysis of a cross-sectional national sample of youth and their parents. Youth social and emotional competencies and parental monitoring were found to be the most significant buffering influences in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. The qualitative Study 2 built on the results from Study 1, to expand the quantitative findings. In Study 2, youth at the end of middle school and their parents were interviewed to gain deeper understanding about the experiences of co-occurring LD and mental health problems from a family perspective. Data analysis identified youth fatigue, youth self-efficacy, and family relationships as central themes related to the challenges youth and their families experienced. Integrating the findings of the two studies illustrated the complex psychological, social, and educational implications for youth with LD in a family context. The interplay of factors embedded in the relation between the LD and mental health problems underscores this complexity, suggesting the relation cannot be completely understood without considering the multiple levels of influences. Implications for theory, research, and practice are described with an emphasis on ecological approaches and building school-family relationships. / Graduate

Mostert, Marthinus Petrus January 1992 (has links)
Suppes beweer dat "All teachers everywhere recognise the help that books give them in teaching students. The day is coming when computers will receive the same recognition. Teachers look on computers as a new and powerful tool for helping them to teach their students more effectively." 2.

Salvador

Fatores relacionados à ocorrência de Leishmaniose Tegumentar Americana no Vale do Ribeira / Factors related to the occurrence American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Ribeira Valley

Alessandra Ferreira da Silva 18 December 2008 (has links)
This work is an ecological descriptive study on the American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in the Ribeira Valley region of Sao Paulo (composed of 23 municipalities), which aimed to correlate the incidence of the disease with environmental and social factors. The paper refers to the period 1998 to 2006 which was divided into three years, the first from 1998 to 2000, the second from 2001 to 2003 and the third from 2004 to 2006. The rates of incidence of ACL were calculated for these periods (Coefmtr1, Coefmtr2 and Coefmtr3) Szklo seconds. This division was made in accordance with the graphics characteristics of the coefficients of incidence of ACL in the period, which has shown a period in a first stage of the disease endemic in the second period (2001 to 2003) the peak incidence analysis shows that characterizes a epidemic period strong. In the second period some municipalities show peaks of incidence of proportions lower than those observed in the previous period, yet still features the epidemic stage. The rates of incidence are dependent variables of the three regression models performed. The independent variables were obtained from sources in secondary databases, and are: in nature and socio-demographic, related climatic conditions, a political-geographical and physical and biological. These variables were separated in quality and quantity respectively and analyzed by non-parametric tests for Spearman and Mann Whitney and selected for the process of regress multiple model, the variables with p <0.20. There was a need for three different models to see if the determining factors that led to the series to behave in a different way, would be the same or not. What we understand is that there is a change in the pattern of the first to the other two periods. The study points to socio-demographic factors as determinants in the incidence of ACL and the presence of vector

Tendances d'évolution en termes de mutualisation de la logistique urbaine : une comparaison France-Allemagne / Trends of evolution in terms of urban logistics mutualization : a comparison of France and Germany

Wagenhausen, Falk 27 October 2015 (has links)
In 2011, the world population exceeded 7.3 billion people, with more than 50% living in cities. This has not happened without generating many problems. Urban spaces, particularly in Europe, are already highly congested due to a growing of population, goods, and waste, all of which have a significant impact on the environment. Issues related to urban logistics naturally lead to more academic research, particularly in urban logistics mutualization (ULM), which has significantly increased since 2010 as a reflection of current experimentation, especially in Germany and France. Based on an in-depth analysis of six professional journals used as corpus of secondary data, the research question is to find out the differentiated development of the ULM in France and Germany. The objective of this doctoral thesis is to better understand the complex research subject, ULM, which is currently insufficiently studied. The investigation, based on a post hoc and longitudinal methodology, brings out a large number of items as well as highlights the comparative development of the ULM in these two selected countries. The results are summarized in a comprehensible reading grid identifying ULM cycles within the current diversity of technical and organizational solutions. These solutions lead to new ideas concerning the actions of public authorities, in turn providing feedback about the challenges of implementing urban logistics spaces.
