Muddy memories : environmental change at Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - evidence from diatoms

Fordyce, Nicholas 01 February 2017 (has links)
Diatoms are microscopic algae found in almost all aquatic environments. They are habitat specific and have silica frustules which preserve well in sediments. They have been used extensively to provide a multitude of palaeoecological data relating to pH, nutrient loads and water levels. Here, the diatoms in a lake sediment core from Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, South Africa, are analysed to show fluctuations in littoral to benthic taxa, and brackish to freshwater taxa as indicators of lake level changes over time. Changes in lake level act as a proxy for warm/dry or cold/wet periods over time. During the last 240 years lake levels have remained consistently low but nevertheless indicate four alternating periods of cold/wet and warm/dry climate. From c. A.D. 1770 (the last few decades of the Little Ice Age) to the c. A.D. 1840 the climate was cool and wet, but nonetheless gradually warmed up and became drier. From c. A.D. 1840 through to c. A.D. 1920 a there was a gradual increase in temperature and corresponding decrease in rainfall. Then, from c. A.D. 1920 till c. A.D. 1980 there was another colder, wetter period. Finally, very recently, from around c. A.D. 1980 till the present day, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi has experienced warmer, drier conditions once. Pollution-tolerant diatoms increase during the last 100 years and indicate eutrophication of the lake, a consequence of anthropogenic activity in the region. The diatom sequence from Phindiswene provides a high resolution climatic proxy for the critical period covering the latter stages of the Little Ice Age (LIA), post LIA warming, and recent increasing anthropogenic impacts.

The aim of the present work is to study the input of trace metals of environmental interest, such as Pb, Zn, Ni, Cu, V, Ba, Co e Cd, in sediments from the Iguaçu River and the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area estuaries, comparing the degrees of metal accumulation between these environments. Two sediment cores were collected in 2007, one from the mudflat inside the Iguaçu River (RED3) and the other near the Guapi and Guarai river mouths (MAC). The sediment core RED3 presented sediments predominately composed for silte and clay, with a maximum sand content of 3%. The sediment core MAC also presented fine granulometric size, however it showed up to 20% of sand in some sedimentary layers. Both sediment cores showed a change in sedimentation rates from the second half of the twentieth century, which might be reflecting the beginning of an accelerated industrialization process and development of the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area. The sediment core RED3 presented a large concentration variation of organic carbon, trace metals, Fe and Mn. This might be a reflection of the high Iguaçu River hydrodynamic. All the trace metals, Fe and Mn presented a concentration increase in the second half of the 1980’s, suggesting a vertical redistribution due the process diagenetic. The trace metal concentration found in the MAC core showed two background levels. The first level consists of concentrations measured from the core bottom up to 75 cm, which was equivalent to records up to 1872. Moreover, the sediments from those environmental conditions predominantly presented clay, aloctone organic matter and low concentrations of trace metals. From the mentioned depth onwards, there were concentration increases. Once increased, the concentration remained constant until the top of the core (except Zn and Pb). These increases were probably influenced by the new environmental conditions catchment in the end of XIX century, possibly due to a deforestation process, which occasioned major erosion and weathering. Inventory, flux and trace metal enrichment factors showed highest in the Iguaçu River than in the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area other estuaries and the others important estuaries of the world.

Nilsson, Elinor, Nordin, Therese January 2016 (has links)
Diatoms are microscopic, photosynthetic, single-celled organisms that are useful in studies of water qualities (eg pH, nutrients, salinity). By analyzing changes in the species composition of diatoms back in time, gives an opportunity to interpret the marine environment affected by various factors (Andren et al, 1999). The aim of the study was to study changes in diatom abundance and composition in Hallsfjärden, a bay in the Baltic Sea located north of Himmerfjärden in Södertälje. The site was chosen because it is a bay that is assumed to have a large environmental impact due to external factors such as increased population growth, water treatment plants, industrial areas, dredging and a link to Lake Mälaren. The purpose of the study therefore to investigate whether there was an environmental impact in Hallsfjärden, in order to draw conclusions about what happened in the area and what has affected the water the last 100 years.      The survey is conducted by sampling sediment cores, studied by biostratigraphy of fossil diatoms to reconstruct past environmental conditions. The results of the analysis showed that oxygen deficiency was a particular problem, which is related to the eutrophication that are threatening some diatoms and thereby changes the species composition of ecosystems in Hallsfjärden. A plausible interpretation of the analyze results is that Hallsfjärden was adversely affected by the Södertalje area's population growth and Himmerfjärdsverkets startup by high emissions of nutrients. It has on the other hand appeared a positive impact for Himmerfjärdsverkets gradually improved purification with clearer water conditions. Hallsfjärden have proved to be a particularly sensitive ecosystem in this study, with low salinity and strong thermocline, which means that it is more affected by eutrophication and pollution in its drainage area. This causes a problem of eutrophication in Hallsfjärden due to the bay showing the influence of the surrounding areas and its emissions, which later exports further to the Baltic Sea via Himmerfjärden with the southbound flow.

Multi-Proxy ~8500 Year Paleoenvironmental Reconstruction of Baie des Baradères, Haiti

Moser, Sydney 11 November 2021 (has links)
In the Circum-Caribbean, long timescale paleoenvironmental records, which are used to establish important baseline data for climatological phenomena such as droughts, floods, and hurricanes, are rare. This project uses geological and geochemical proxies (X-Ray fluorescence core scanning data, grain-size analysis, loss on ignition) from a nine-meter-long sediment core from a coastal karst basin near Haiti’s southwestern peninsula to reconstruct Holocene environmental and climatic changes in a region that is both understudied and highly sensitive to the effects of storms, sea level change, tectonics, and anthropogenic impacts. The chronology of the core is established with 4 AMS dates from terrestrial organic matter and shows continuous sedimentation from ~8500 cal BP to the present, with an abrupt increase in sedimentation rate at ~2900 cal BP. High values of Ti and Ti/Ca are associated with finer sediments in the core and indicate relatively humid conditions at ~6500 cal BP, followed by a gradual drying trend. This is consistent with data from elsewhere in the Caribbean that reflects a southward migration of the ITCZ during the early Holocene. After 2500 cal BP, a series of large and abrupt increases in Ti and Ti/Ca are associated with an influx of finer, terrestrially-derived sediment into the bay due to enhanced discharge from the nearby Baradères River, possibly as a result of short-duration shifts to wetter climate conditions, hurricane-induced precipitation, and/or prehistoric-era human settlement. Variations in silicate input (e.g., K/Ti), marine productivity (e.g., Ca/Ti), and redox conditions (e.g., Mn/Fe) are linked to local climate changes and resulting changes in the depositional environment, while peaks in Rb/Sr and Ti/Ca could be signals for erosion related to events such as hurricanes and/or land use changes. Finally, high values of silt and clay, in conjunction with enhanced organics, Ti, Fe, K and P over the last couple centuries reflect historic-era deforestation and erosion. This study presents an excellent opportunity to further our understanding of the diverse relationships between ecosystem dymanics, climate, and anthropogenic forcings and adds to the growing inventory of paleoclimatological records in the Caribbean, improving the spatial distribution of such studies, and ultimately improving our understanding of the driving forces of both short- and long-term climate variability.

What the Orne River tells about the former steelmaking activities : chemical and mineralogical investigations on sediments / Sur les traces de l'ancienne activité sidérurgique en Lorraine : chimie et minéralogie des sédiments de l'Orne

Kanbar, Hussein 11 July 2017 (has links)
The Orne River is a tributary of the Moselle River, located northeastern France. During the last two centuries, the Orne watershed was highly industrialized. The introduction of wastes or by-products into the river is highly anticipated. Based on industrial needs, some small dams were built. However, the Directive 2000/60/EC of the European parliament strongly incite the removal of engineered structures (such as dams). This raises the question about the fate of contaminated sediment remobilization. The aims of this work are to identify the different sediment deposits along the Orne River. Surface sediments and sediment cores were collected along the Orne River. The sediments were then analyzed for water content, grain size distribution, pH, major and trace chemical composition using ICP-OES and ICP-MS, respectively, major crystalline minerals (XRD), micrometric (light microscope and SEM) and sub-micrometric (TEM) mineralogy, and Zn speciation at a molecular level (XANES). The chemical and mineralogical composition of the surface sediments revealed lithogenic as well as anthropogenic contributions. Interestingly, the sediment layers of the core collected upstream of the Beth dam showed fingerprints of the former steelmaking facilities. Those deposits were highly enriched in Fe, Zn and Pb, and were fingerprinted by crystalline iron minerals, and by newly formed Fe-aluminosilicates. TEM-EDXS and XANES at the Zn K-edge observations evidenced that Zn was mainly carried as sulfides, and to a lesser extent associated to Fe oxy-hydroxides and Fe-aluminosilicates. The remobilization of the contaminated sediments can then be traced by the unique mineralogical composition

Changes in Coral Community Composition at Devil's Crown, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A 7,700 Year Perspective

Hendrickson, Katharine Jane 11 December 2014 (has links)
Coral mortality caused by El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity and its related disturbances has been researched throughout the Eastern Pacific. In the past three decades, disturbances related to the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have been shown to influence coral growth in the Eastern Pacific. In the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, more than 97% of corals experienced mortality after the severe 1982-1983 ENSO episode. However, two of the most dominant coral species found in a coral community adjacent to Devil’s Crown; Psammocora stellata and Diaseris distorta survived this severe ENSO event. By reconstructing sediment cores of the coral community, this study assessed how the coral assemblage has changed over the past 7,700 years of the Holocene epoch. The historical reconstructions were then related to existing records of Holocene ENSO variability in order to determine if changes in the relative abundance of coral species were related to ENSO activity and disturbances. We observed high variability in the relative abundances of P. stellata and D. distorta in the cores, including an increase in the abundance of D. distorta at approximately 2,200 yBP. Between the two species, opposite abundance trends were observed and supported by Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) ordination analysis. Overall, the high variance in coral composition at the site throughout the Holocene documents repeated disturbance events in this region.

Erosion en milieu sableux cultivé au Niger : dynamique actuelle et passée en liaison avec la pression anthropique et les changements climatiques / Erosion in cultivated field in Niger : actual and recent dynamics in liaison with human pressure and climatic changes

Abdourhamane Touré, Amadou 07 June 2011 (has links)
Sahelian ecosystems, especially those installed on sandy soils react very quickly and intensely to small climatic changes. In this semi-arid area, wind erosion which occurs mainly on cultivated millet fields and is threatening the sustainable use of land resources. Furthermore, the rapid population growth and the severe droughts of the twentieth century have had important impacts on ecosystems. To better manage this fragile environment, it is important first to understand how it works. This thesis was included in the framework of the AMMA project (African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses) and was in the heart of a CORUS 2 (Coopération pour la Recherche Universitaire et Scientifique) program which aimed to study wind erosion of cultivated sandy soils in the region of Niamey. The strategy followed in this study was based on detailed experimental measurements aiming to precisely quantify and understand current environment dynamics and more precisely, wind erosion dynamics. The results of experimental measurements were used to explain the changes we observed on small catchments of two permanent lakes near Niamey: Bangou Bi and Bangou Kirey (13.51 ° N - 2, 21 ° E). The sediment cores collected in these lakes were then analyzed in light of their catchments changes during the last century. In this study, we highlighted the major role of crop residues cover in traditionally cultivated field against wind erosion. Even at extremely low cover rate, they provide efficient protection for soils. However, below a threshold of 2%, their efficiency dramatically decrease and wind erosion caused large amount of soil losses (in average 130 t per year) and is actively involved in soil crusting. It is likely that this mechanism (wind erosion due very low crop residue cover and soil crusting) occurred by the middle of eighties due to the combined effects of generalized soil cultivation and sever drought of 1985. These processes explained the large degradation of the lakes watersheds we observed from surveys and diachronic mapping between 1975 and 2009. With sediment core analyses, we proposed a model of sedimentation in the Niamey lakes. This model suggests increasing erosion since the 1980’s. From the study of sediments core collected in lakes, we proposed a model explaining sedimentation that suggests an intensification of erosion from the mid 80s.
