Cette thèse concerne une nouvelle méthode chimique de croissance par germes qui peut produire des assemblés de nanostructures métalliques epitaxiées sur des surfaces macroscopiques cristallines qui agissent comme germes. Cette approche permet d’obtenir des assemblés bien organisées en échelle centimétrique de nanofils métalliques de Co, qui sontmonocristallins, monodisperses de diamètres inferieurs à 10nm et qui ont une orientation perpendiculaire. Ils ont une anisotropie magnétique perpendiculaire et sont intéressantes pour des applications d’enregistrement magnétique à très haute densité. L’extension de cette méthode au fer donne des films nanostructurés de fer. L’orientation des nanostructures sur le support solide dépend de l’orientation cristallographique du substrat, alors que leur morphologie est dictée par la composition de la solution. Cet objectif a été atteint grâce à des études parallèles sur le mécanisme de croissance de nano-cristaux de cobalt en solution qui ont révélées une influence inattendue de la procédure de préparation de la solution mère sur la morphologie des nanocristaux. En plus,l’utilisation des germes nanoscopiques pour la croissance de Co et de Fe a rendu des nanofils longs de Co et des altères de Co-Fe et elle a contribué à la définition et l’amélioration des conditions expérimentales pour la croissance par germes de Co et de Fe sur les substrats solides. / This thesis concerns a new wet chemical seeded growth method that can produce arrays of metal nanostructures epitaxially grown on crystalline macroscopic surfaces which act as seeds. This approach produces wafer-scale organized 2D hexagonal arrays of perpendicularly oriented, monodisperse and monocrystalline metallic Co nanowires with diameters below 10 nm which exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and are interesting for applications in ultra high density magnetic recording. Extension of this approach to iron gives rise to nanostructured iron films. The orientation of the nanostructures on the solid substrate depends on the substrate crystallographic orientation, whereas their morphology is dictated by the solution composition. This objective was attained through parallel studies on the growth mechanism of cobalt nano-crystals in solution which revealed an unexpected influence of the stock solution preparation procedure on the nanocrystal morphology. In addition, the use of nanoscopicseeds for the overgrowth of cobalt and iron gave rise to long Co nanowires and Co-Fe dumbbells and contributed to the definition and the improvement of the experimental conditions for the seeded growth of Co and Fe on the solid substrates

Segmentation of Carotid Arteries from 3D and 4D Ultrasound Images / Segmentering av halsartärer från 3D och 4D ultraljudsbilderMattsson, Per, Eriksson, Andreas January 2002 (has links)
This thesis presents a 3D semi-automatic segmentation technique for extracting the lumen surface of the Carotid arteries including the bifurcation from 3D and 4D ultrasound examinations. Ultrasound images are inherently noisy. Therefore, to aid the inspection of the acquired data an adaptive edge preserving filtering technique is used to reduce the general high noise level. The segmentation process starts with edge detection with a recursive and separable 3D Monga-Deriche-Canny operator. To reduce the computation time needed for the segmentation process, a seeded region growing technique is used to make an initial model of the artery. The final segmentation is based on the inflatable balloon model, which deforms the initial model to fit the ultrasound data. The balloon model is implemented with the finite element method. The segmentation technique produces 3D models that are intended as pre-planning tools for surgeons. The results from a healthy person are satisfactory and the results from a patient with stenosis seem rather promising. A novel 4D model of wall motion of the Carotid vessels has also been obtained. From this model, 3D compliance measures can easily be obtained.

Genotypes of rapeseeds producing yellow seeds were not found in nature. Breeders yellow-seeded rapeseeds have been developed applying different combinations of interspecific crosses. In the Laboratory of Genetics-Biotechnology at the Lithuanian Agricultural University, yellow-seeded spring rapeseeds were developed for the first time without interspecific crosses (Burbulis, 2001). All cultivars of yellow-seeded rapeseed have one essential drawback – unblocking of pigmentation takes place in other generations and seeds of different colours (yellowish brown, brown or black) are formed. Breeders, working with the cultivars of yellow-seeded rapeseed, admit that environmental temperature is one of the factors limiting the manifestation of the trait.

This thesis describes a set of image analysis tools developed for the purpose of quantifying the distribution of chromatin in (light) microscope images of cell nuclei. The distribution or pattern of chromatin is influenced by both external and internal variations of the cell environment, including variations associated with the cell cycle, neoplasia, apoptosis, and malignancy associated changes (MACs). The quantitative characterisation of this pattern makes possible the prediction of the biological state of a cell, or the detection of subtle changes in a population of cells. This has important application to automated cancer screening. The majority of existing methods for quantifying chromatin distribution (texture) are based on the stochastic approach to defining texture. However, it is the premise of this thesis that the structural approach is more appropriate because pathologists use terms such as clumping, margination, granulation, condensation, and clearing to describe chromatin texture, and refer to the regions of condensed chromatin as granules, particles, and blobs. The key to the structural approach is the segmentation of the chromatin into its texture primitives. Unfortunately all of the chromatin segmentation algorithms published in the literature suffer from one or both of the following drawbacks: (i) a segmentation that is not consistent with a human's perception of blobs, particles, or granules; and (ii) the need to specify, a priori, one or more subjective operating parameters. The latter drawback limits the robustness of the algorithm to variations in illumination and staining quality. The structural model developed in this thesis is based on several novel low-, med-ium-, and high-level image analysis tools. These tools include: a class of non-linear self-dual filters, called folding induced self-dual filters, for filtering impulse noise; an algorithm, based on seeded region growing, for robustly segmenting chromatin; an improved seeded region growing algorithm that is independent of the order of pixel processing; a fast priority queue implementation suitable for implementing the watershed transform (special case of seeded region growing); the adjacency graph attribute co-occurrence matrix (AGACM) method for quantifying blob and mosaic patterns in the plane; a simple and fast algorithm for computing the exact Euclidean distance transform for the purpose of deriving contextual features (measurements) and constructing geometric adjacency graphs for disjoint connected components; a theoretical result establishing an equivalence between the distance transform of a binary image and the grey-scale erosion of its characteristic function by an elliptic poweroid structuring element; and a host of chromatin features that can be related to qualitative descriptions of chromatin distribution used by pathologists. In addition, this thesis demonstrates the application of this new structural model to automated cervical cancer screening. The results provide empirical evidence that it is possible to detect differences in the pattern of nuclear chromatin between samples of cells from a normal Papanicolaou-stained cervical smear and those from an abnormal smear. These differences are supportive of the existence of the MACs phenomenon. Moreover the results compare favourably with those reported in the literature for other stains developed specifically for automated cytometry. To the author's knowledge this is the first time, based on a sizable and uncontaminated data set, that MACs have been demonstrated in Papanicolaou stain. This is an important finding because the primary screening test for cervical cancer, the Papanicolaou test, is based on this stain.

Design et fabrication de meta-atomes plasmoniques à partir de nanoparticules à patchs / Design and synthesis of plasmonic meta-atoms from patchy particlesChomette, Cyril 13 November 2015 (has links)
Les méta-matériaux sont une nouvelle classe de matériaux composites artificiels quiprésentent des propriétés inédites. Ils sont typiquement sous divisés en unité appelées méta-atomes.Un design approprié de ces méta-atomes, architecturés à l’échelle nanométrique, permet d’induire despropriétés aussi extraordinaires qu’un indice de réfraction négatif. Dans ce contexte, nous avonsdéveloppé des particules à patchs, capable de développer des interactions selon des directionsprédéterminées. Des clusters multipodiques fait de ces particules (diélectrique) entourées d’un nombrecontrôlé de satellites plasmoniques (or) ont été développés. Nous nous sommes focalisés sur desclusters isotropes, dérivant de géométries tétraédriques, octaédriques et icosaédriques (trois des cinqsolides de Platon). Pour cela, nous avons utilisé des clusters silice/polystyrène, obtenus parpolymérisation ensemencée en émulsion, qui ont servi de préformes. Ils ont ainsi permis d’obtenir desparticules dont les patchs sont en fait des fossettes au fond desquelles subsiste un résidu de chaînespolystyrène greffées. En modifiant chimiquement ces chaînes, nous avons permis soit l’accrochage aufond de ces fossettes de colloïdes d’or puis leur croissance, soit l’accostage de satellites de silice surlesquels nous avons ensuite fait croître une coquille d’or. La seconde voie à offert un meilleur contrôlede la morphologie des clusters et notamment de la distance entre les satellites d’or (quelquesnanomètres) qui est primordiale pour assurer un couplage plasmonique optimal. Les propriétés desclusters obtenus ont été modélisées et mesurées. / Metamaterials are a novel class of artificial composite materials, typically made of subunit called meta-atoms and exhibiting unusual properties. Such meta-atoms, have to be architecturedat the nanometric level, to induce as extraordinary properties as a negative refractive index. In thiscontext, we developed patchy particles, capable to create interactions along predetermined directions.Multipodic clusters made of those (dielectric) particles surrounded by a controlled number ofplasmonic satellites (gold) were developed. We focused on isotropic clusters deriving fromtetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral geometry (three of the fifth Platonic solids). For that purpose,we used silica/polystyrene clusters, obtained from seeded emulsion polymerization, as template. Byderiving those clusters, patchy particles bearing dimples containing grafted residual polystyrene chainswere obtained. By chemically deriving those chains, we explored two synthetic pathways, thedecoration of the dimples with gold colloids subsequently grown or the anchoring of silica satellitesonto which gold shells were subsequently grown. The second one was prove to offer a better controlover the cluster morphology as well as the inter-satellites gap (few nanometer) which is pivotal toensure an optimal plasmonic coupling. Then, the optical properties of the as obtained clusters weresimulated and measured.

Segmentation of an image into individual tree crowns is a key step in the processing of remotely sensed data for forestry practice. The doctoral thesis gives a broad overview of this topic. It comprehends theoretical context from mathematical point of view and defines basic terms from airborne imaging and laser scanning. Mathematical methods of tree detection are focused on a robust adaptation to the actual conditions in a region of interest. A novel approach of crown area delineation is introduced, it combines a seeded region growing technique with an active contour as a crown boundary representation. The parametrisation of all algorithms is analysed in a practical half of the thesis and more application-oriented issues are mentioned. Executable computer programs are attached.

Initialement poussées par le marché résidentiel, les évolutions du réseau d’accès optique sont aujourd’hui également stimulées par l’expansion du réseau mobile. Comme le montre le premier chapitre de ce document, l’introduction d’un multiplexage en longueur d’onde dense constitue l’une des solutions privilégiées pour permettre la montée en débit dans les réseaux d’accès optique. Dans cette thèse, l’impact de l’introduction du multiplexage en longueur d’onde dense est étudié sous trois axes :• Une prochaine étape de l’évolution des technologies pour les réseaux d’accès passerait par une hybridation entre d’une part, un multiplexage temporel (hérité des précédentes générations), et d’autre part, un multiplexage en longueur d’onde dense. Cette technologie, appelée NGPON2-TWDM, permet aujourd’hui d’envisager des débits de 40Gb/s à 80Gb/s grâce à 4 ou 8 canaux. Les difficultés liées à la stabilité de la longueur d’onde lors de l’émission de données en mode paquet dans le sens montant du lien, ainsi que les solutions associées, sont étudiées dans le second chapitre.• L’importance du marché que représente le réseau d’accès optique (aussi bien pour les clients résidentiels que pour les réseaux mobiles), induit la nécessité pour les différentes générations de technologies de coexister au sein d’une même infrastructure. As shown in the first chapter of this document, dense wavelength division multiplexing is one of the favorite solutions in order to increase optical access networks throughput. In this thesis, we propose a study of dense wavelength division multiplexing introduction according to three main topics :• Service providers and equipment suppliers have decided that the next step in residential market evolution will consist in a hybridization between, on one hand, a legacy time division multiplexing, and on the other hand, a dense wavelength division multiplexing. Named NG-PON2, this technology allows today 40Gb/s to 80Gb/s thanks to 4 to 8 channel pairs. Wavelength stability of the upstream emitter under burst mode operation, and related solutions, are studied in the second chapter.• Market importance (for both residential market and mobile networks) requires the different technologies generations to coexist on the same infrastructure. Due to the high optical power and the wavelength spans allocated to each technology, this coexistence can lead to technologies interactions by stimulated Raman scattering, as described in the third chapter.• Finally, the fourth part of this document describes the limits and potentialities of the self-seeded emitter technology for O-band dense wavelength division multiplexing, able to automatically and passively self-stabilize the wavelength of each emitter.
