Revision and writing quality of seventh graders composing with and without word processors

Bierman, Cathy January 1988 (has links)
This experimental study examined the effects of word processing on revision and writing quality of expository compositions produced by seventh—graders. Thirty—six students in two accelerated English classes served as subjects. Prior to the experimental period, all students completed a handwritten composition (pretest) and received identical instruction in (a) composing and revising and (b) using a word processor. One intact class was randomly assigned as the experimental group. During the six-week treatment period all students wrote six compositions (three drafts per composition). The experimental group completed all composing and revising on the computer and the control group completed their compositions with pen and paper. Posttest l (produced on computer in the experimental group and by hand in the control group) and posttest 2 (handwritten in both groups) were analyzed for the frequency and types of revisions made between first and second drafts. The pretest and three posttests were analyzed for writing quality of final drafts. There were no significant differences: (a) between groups in the number of revisions in posttest l (computer written by experimental subjects and handwritten by control subjects), (b) in percentage of high—level revisions made with and without the word processor, and (c) in quality of compositions produced with and without the computer. There was a significant difference between groups in the number of revisions in handwritten compositions (posttest 2) produced by both groups after the treatment; the word processing group revised more frequently than did the group not exposed to six weeks of word processing. The experimental subjects also significantly increased in frequency of revisions from the time of posttest l (computer written) to posttest 2 (handwritten). A significant difference across time in writing quality scores was found. The findings suggested that students who compose and revise on computer can make substantially more revisions when they resume pen and paper composing and revising; however, use of the word processor does not differentially affect types of revisions attempted or writing quality. Word processors increase motivation, and adequate systems may increase the ability to detect and eliminate textual problems. Recommendations for research, theory, and instruction are discussed. / Ed. The Effects of a Strategic Thinking Program on the Cognitive Ability of Seventh Grade Students

Houchins, Joyce S. (Joyce Ann S.) 08 1900 (has links)
This study used a posttest only design to determine the effects of a strategic thinking program on the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT, Form 4) scores of seventh graders who received direct instruction in Strategic Thinking Skills (STS) with the scores of seventh graders who did not receive direct instruction in STS. The study was conducted in a large suburban middle school in north Texas.

Selected Factors Associated With Reading Interests of Seventh- and Eighth-grade Pupils

Newman, Nancy Ann 05 1900 (has links)
This study sought to determine if there were differences in the types of reading interests of seventh- and eighth-grade pupils associated with their racial origins, their socioeconomic status, or their school environments. It also sought to consider the strength of reading interest scores as related to other variables and to consider the relationship between these scores and the number of hours spent in reading and the change in amount of reading since the previous school year.

Sugestões de materiais didáticos manipuláveis a fim de diminuir os obstáculos na aprendizagem dos números inteiros / Suggestions for manipulatives in order to reduce obstacles in learning whole numbers

Fantini, Patrícia 28 June 2018 (has links)
Este trabalho tem como objetivo contribuir para uma melhor aprendizagem dos alunos da educação básica sobre o conceito dos números inteiros, em particular, a reta numérica. A metodologia utilizada é a pesquisa bibliográfica. / This work aims to contribute to a better learning for students of basic education on the whole numbers, in particular, the numerical line. The methodology used is the bibliographical research. We note that the official documents guide to the use of history as an element that contributes to the learning, in this sense, this work is based on the idea of contrary senses, of medieval traders, to understand the opposite directions in the numerical line of whole numbers. We draw up a sequence of activities for teaching, initially, of the line of the natural numbers that evince its constituent elements: (a) its origin, (b) its directions and (c) its displacements, considering the various possibilities of position of the line, horizontal, vertical and slanted. To these elements it was possible to add the need for the expansion of the line of natural numbers, creating a new place, which needs new numbers, the negative ones. This new line, that of the whole numbers, has its constituent elements from the line of the natural ones, so it is an expansion of it. We conclude with the suggestion of two manipulatable didactic materials that can be proposed as a complement of the sequence of activities, aiming to facilitate the process of teaching and learning, in order to reduce the students a difficulties in this numerical field.

Metaphoric Competence of Learning Disabled and Normally Achieving Children

Stimson, Wanda Fields 08 1900 (has links)
Metaphorlc competence of learning disabled and normally achieving fifth and seventh grade male children was Investigated. Four measures were made of metaphorlc abilities. The first task was a multiple choice written test to determine the rate of metaphorlc preference. Part two consisted of children developing metaphors. Part three and four required explanations of the meaning of preferred metaphors and produced metaphors.

The Interests and Activities of the Seventh Grade, Huey School, Wichita Falls, Texas

Griffith, R. Francis January 1950 (has links)
Interest is a guiding force in helping an individual to realize the pattern he is making through his day by day experiences. All children have not had the same experiences. They may or may not be interested in the same activity. It has been said that behavior is caused. If behavior is caused, then, to know the interests of children may be very valuable in diverting or guiding their activities which are desirable to help them better fit themselves to the society in which they live. Thus, the problem of this thesis is to discover the interests and activities of a seventh-grade group of boys and girls attending Huey School, Wichita Falls, Texas.

The Rorsach as an Indicator of Intelligence in Seventh-Grade Children

Wolf, Martin G. 06 1900 (has links)
This study was undertaken in the belief that a greater relationship would be revealed between the Rorschach and intelligence test scores if the factors in the Rorschach which have been found in the past to be related to intelligence could be compared as a whole with scores obtained on mental tests. The purpose of this study was to determine whether it could be demonstrated that a higher degree of relationship does exist between several of the Rorschach factors, considered as a whole, and intelligence as revealed by the California Test of Mental Maturity.
