Calderón Quijada, Katherine Valeria, Sepúlveda Contreras, Carla 04 1900 (has links)

Wealth and sexual behaviour among men in Zimbabwe

Musiyarira, Shepstone 17 January 2012 (has links)
M.A. Faculty of Humanties, School of Social Sciences. University of the Witwatersrand, 2011 / INTRODUCTION: Zimbabwe has witnessed a decline in HIV prevalence in the general population estimated to be 27% in 2001, 19% in 2005, 16% in 2007 and 14% in 2009 (Mapingure et al., 2010). Whilst it is a notable decline the rate is still high. Sexual behaviour change has been reported as key to this HIV prevalence decline. Partner reduction has been advocated as an important strategy in HIV prevention. Understanding the socioeconomic and demographic factors influencing the sexual behaviours that are either sustaining the declining, yet still high, prevalence rates is critical to inform interventions. There is growing interest in the association between individual’s socioeconomic status and sexual risk taking behaviour in sub-Saharan Africa. The general objective was to examine the association between wealth and sexual behaviour among men in Zimbabwe. METHOD: Analysis of data from 7175 sexually active aged 15-54 years who participated in the Zimbabwe’s 2005/06 Demographic and Health Survey was done using logistic regression models and have reported odds ratios (OR) with Confidence intervals. In the multiple logistic regressions, two models were used. Model 1 included variables: wealth, age and education whilst in model 2 we controlled for: marital status, type of residence, region of residence and religion because these socio-demographic factors influence male sexual behaviour. The dependent variables included: unprotected sex at last encounter, multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships in last 12 months. RESULTS: When we controlled for potential confounding effects of education, age, marital status, type of residence, region of residence and religion, men in the middle wealth category of the population were less likely to have engaged in unprotected sex in the last encounter with a nonspousal cohabiting partner (OR 0.41, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.76). Wealth was found to be not statistically significantly associated with multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships. CONCLUSION: Wealthy men in Zimbabwe are less likely to engage in unprotected sex. Wealth’s association with multiple and concurrent sexual partnerships was not confirmed in this study. Equitable distribution of wealth and sound economic policies are critical in improving the general welfare of nationals so as to reduce or eliminate some of the factors that cloud the associations between socioeconomic and demographic factors and sexual behaviours of individuals. Policies and programs that recommend deferral of gratification remain critical in order to reduce number of partners.

Ferreira, Gabriella Rossetti. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: Sexuality and sex education are issues that need to be properly discussed in schools. However, the formation process of teachers generally do not have such issues as needed to be covered. The school demands, however, show that it is essential that teachers are properly trained to work and face the various challenges related to sexuality approach, as well as the implementation of sex education programs. With that in mind, some professionals in these areas have made the junction of Distance Learning with Digital Technologies, and created distance learning courses with classroom moments in an attempt to remedy the gap training of these teachers regarding these issues. Based on these, the general objective of this study is to analyze the structure and content developed in distance learning courses with face moments of teacher training in sexuality and ES, through documentation and interviews with those responsible for it. According to the findings made, the results showed that: the formations have contributed to disseminate the content of sex education in different Brazilian states, however, suffer from the lack of continuity and follow-up of teachers, making it difficult to assess the long-term to show if the shape, and the contents were actually applied in effective they have been proposed; that such training does not exclude the need that there is initial training with disciplines that address contents related to sex education; all courses are attempted in interweaving the issues with the school, the curriculum and the NCP, which facilitates the work in the classroom and practical approaches; and that all the analyzed courses were designed from the perspective of the Digital Technologies when used for education, can help teachers to have training with regard to sex education. We also note that the training will not be able to fully break away from sexuality view that all are conditioned for ... / Mestre

January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: The Grounded Theory (GT) is an inductive research method that is based on the everyday data analysis to generate theory. This thesis is a theoretical and interpretative proposal on child sexuality and its contribution to the area of sex education, a theory which organizes the production of knowledge on the subject. It is a bibliographical and documentary research, as the constructivist aspect of GT Kathy Charmaz. Under the main heading "infantile sexuality" were accessed and coded articles, monographs, dissertations and indexed theses in Google Scholar, from 2004 to 2014, as well as dissertations and theses in the data loading phase, held at the Bank of CAPES Theses (Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior). The encoding that allowed the organization of the fragments of the indexed texts originated in the Sentences categories Coded (SCC). These SCC is the first product resulting from the coding of the fragments of the texts. The SCC generated Categories Units (UC) that are a second product, following the GT method, which coalesce and regroup the SCC in the search for a simplifying contour to theorizing in progress. These UC enabled the systematization of the first concepts of the theory that it is the Provisional Concept Units (UCP), the Memorandum basis for the theory that lead in children's sexuality. This theory is based on three considerations: (1) child sexuality has its reference in Freud and psychoanalysis to the contemporary; (2) the school routine shows two situations that complement each other, creating the need for action both in the field of initial teacher training in pedagogy, and in continuing education in public and private / private education networks; (3) the issue of public policies for protection of children's sexuality as a right of the small child. The first consideration is evident in the privilege of a theoretical approach to the field of psychology explanations that support sexuality in... / Doutor

The impact of childhood sexual interaction on current psychological functioning in a male forensic population

Rees, Neil January 1998 (has links)
Little research attention has been paid to forensic populations of male survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), where it is understood that prevalence rates are high. This study aimed to survey a sample of 40 men in a maximum security hospital who had experienced childhood sexual interaction (CSI). The study profiled the psychological functioning of the sample through a number of standardised measures and a semi-structured interview. In addition, the meanings that the men attached to their childhood sexual experiences,t heir 'constructions' of them, were also examined, along with their self-report of distress related to these experiences. The limited research conducted with male survivors suggests that men tend to construct CSI in more positive or neutral terms than female survivors, and are less likely to report distress related to the experience. However, men's experiences of CSI have still shown similar levels of association with psychological symptomatology in adulthood. This apparent discrepancy has been understood in terms of male socialisation. The predictions that the men in this sample would show high levels of psychological symptomatology, which would be associated with the characteristics of CSI, and that the majority of them would describe positive or neutral constructions of CSI, and would tend to report no distress related to their experiences, were supported in this study. The implications of these findings are discussed. Overall, it is stressed that in order to fully understand the impact of CSA on males, and to provide appropriate approaches to interventions, a fuller appreciation of the role of male socialisation must be achieved.

Understanding male athlete sexual aggression: "masculinity, sexual aggression, and athletic participation"

Walker, Earl Eugene, Jr January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / Sexual victimization is a serious public health issue in the United States, particularly on its college campuses. Several attempts have been made to identify groups at high risks for exhibiting sexually aggressive behaviors. In the same vein, this study examines the relationship between athletic participation and sexual aggression with a focus on wrestlers. The author hypothesized that wrestling participation and athletic participation would be positively correlated with sexual aggression. However, it was also hypothesized that this relationship would be mediated by masculinity (gender role conflict) and masculinity related variables (sexual entitlement and competitiveness). A one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) followed by post hoc tests found no significant difference between Wrestlers and Non-Athletes on levels of sexual aggression at the Q = .05 level. Similarly, no significant differences were found between Other Athletes and Non-Athletes at the same alpha level. However, a near significant difference (Q = .058) was found between Multisport Athletes and Other Athletes. A regression analysis was also conducted, which found sexual entitlement, wrestling participation, and drinking intensity as significant predictors of sexual aggression. However, a partial correlation analysis found no mediating effects between wrestling participation and sexual aggression when sexual entitlement and drinking intensity were held constant. Recommendations for rape prevention programs were made based on these findings. / 2031-01-01

Sexual behaviour of international backpackers in the context of travel in Australia

Egan, Caroline Elizabeth, National Centre in HIV Social Research, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
This study is the first to collect detailed empirical data on sexual practice among backpackers while exploring the material and social context of backpacking using an ethnographic framework. The theoretical concepts of liminality and sexual scripts were drawn on to analyse the findings. Backpackers were recruited from hostels in Sydney and Cairns; 559 backpackers (243 women, 316 men) completed an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. In addition, 25 in-depth one-to-one interviews with backpackers and 25 semi-structured interviews were conducted with sexual health and travel clinic staff and hostel service providers. Participant and non-participant observation in backpacker hostels also informed the analysis. Drinking alcohol, often to excess, was central to the backpacking setting and was both a reason for and a post-facto justification of unprotected sex. The backpacking setting encouraged transient liaisons. More than half (55%) of backpackers had sex with someone new during their trip and for 71% of them it was with someone that they had just met that day. Twenty-five per cent of those with no expectations to have casual sex on their trip and 22% of those with no previous experience of casual sex had casual sex during their trip. More than half (53%) of those who had sex with a someone new did so while other people were in the room. Only 55% always used a condom with their last new partner. While most backpackers carried condoms and intended to use them, unprotected sex was common. Perception of risk was low: 78% of those who did not use a condom the last time they had casual sex on the trip perceived their risk of getting HIV to be ??low?? to ??nil??. Three participants acquired HIV during their trip. The culture of backpacking encourages more sexually permissive attitudes but does not encourage condom use, especially for those who did not consistently use condoms at home. These findings highlight the need for more broad-based dissemination of information on STIs to young people, and for future sexual health campaigns to specifically target backpackers in the context in which they travel.
