A reconsideration of the theological conception of sin in the light of the psychoanalytic conceptions of shame and guilt

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the Christian conception of sin through the disciplines of theology and psychology. The method of correlation is used in order that the distinctive nature of each discipline can be retained while the insight of one discipline, psychology, can be used to illuminate a theological concept, sin. The basic elements of a Christian view of sin are discovered through a historical survey of the writings of eight theologians. From this, sin is defined as the universal and inevitable non-recognition, denial, or defiance by man of the life-giving dependent relationship of man upon God. This non-recognition, denial, or defiance is predicted in the conditions of existence and brings about a disruption of the man-God relationship. In this disruption man disobeys Fod and is unable to become what God intended him to be. Unbelief is the core element of the disruption and it evaluates in rebellion, pride, and concupiscence [TRUNCATED]

The article analyses the psychosocial impact of the apologies about the role of the Catholic Church in the Spanish Civil war along two studies. The relational study showed that Blazquez’s apology was perceived with limited impact, being more important at a societal level than at a micro-social level, both, on direct or indirect victims. The experimental study showed that self-criticism reinforced guilt as well as the need for reparation, whereas glorification diminished them. / Se analiza el impacto de las disculpas sobre el rol de la Iglesia Católica en la guerra civil española. Un estudio correlacional mostró que el impacto de las disculpas del obispo Blázquez fue limitado y los encuestados percibieron un impacto mayor sobre la sociedad en general que sobre las víctimas o sus descendientes. Un estudio experimental comparó las opiniones de una condición control donde los participantes leían sobre el rol de la Iglesia en la guerra civil española, con una donde los participantes además leían la autocrítica y con otra donde además leían sobre una beatificación de mártires de la Iglesia durante la guerra civil. La autocrítica reforzaba la culpa y la necesidad de reparación, mientras que la beatificación las disminuía.

Uppsatsen syftar till att redogöra för den subjektiva upplevelsen av att bli bedragen i en nära relation och är således en fenomenologisk ansats. Undersökningen har baserats på tre kvalitativa intervjuer, där de intervjuade redogjort för sin subjektiva upplevelse av att bli bedragen samt definierat begreppet otrohet. Vi har utgått från teorier om skam, skuld och stigma för att kartlägga hur upplevelsen påverkat självet. Scheffs teorier om sociala band har använts för att beskriva påverkan på individens förhållanden till andra. Vi har upptäckt att en monogam relation inte är ett krav för att otrohet ska uppfattas. Det har även framgått att omgivningens reaktioner spelar roll, på så sätt att de antingen sökte stöd från vänner, eller aktivt undanhöll ämnet från dem. Vidare har vi även upptäckt att intervjupersonerna som blivit bedragna tenderar att skuldbelägga sig själva, känna skam över händelsen samt utveckla en starkare grad av svartsjuka – som en förändring av självet. / Based on three qualitative interviews, our research has set out to phenomenologically describe the experience of being cheated on (or in other words, infidelity). The three people we interviewed were to describe their subjective experiences and also provide their own definition of what they considered to be infidelity. Theories on shame, guilt and stigma has been used to describe the experience's implications ”the self”. The theory of ”Social bonds” by Scheff has been used to describe implications on social relationships. We've discovered that infidelity can take place even in a relationship that's not monogamous. We've also discovered that the reaction from others plays a big part - the persons either sought support among friends, or actively withheld information from them. The effects the experience had on the persons' self were the following: they tended to blame themselves, feel shameful about the incident and after the infidelity had occurred, developed stronger feelings of jealousy.

Shame-proneness Vs Guilt-proneness And Their Relationship To Attributional Styles, Coping Strategies And Depressive Symptom Levels Of University Students

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the link between shame-proneness, guilt-proneness, attributional styles, and coping strategies, and then to determine which of these variables are significantly related to depressive symptomatology in the sample of Turkish undergraduates. Moreover, the association between shame-proneness, guilt-proneness and depressive symptomatology through attributional styles and coping strategies is examined. Four hundred undergraduates from different universities completed the Ways of Coping Inventory, Attribution Styles Questionnaire, Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3 and Beck Depression Inventory in addition to the questionnaire surveying sociodemografic variables. The findings of the analyses have revealed that shame- and guiltproneness have a significant effect on coping strategies, attributional styles, and depressive symptomatology. The attributional styles also have predictive effects on the use of coping strategies. However, contrary to the researcher&#039 / s predictions, no relationship between attributional styles and depressive symptomatology has been found. In order to test the mediation model, mediation analyses have been conducted and the results of the analyses have been tested by structural equation modeling, which have confirmed the mediation effect of problem-focused coping only between shame- and guilt-proneness and depressive symptomatology. In conclusion, shame- and guilt-proneness are the strongest predictors of depressive symptomatology and their significant effect on depressive symptoms are above and beyond the other variables. The findings of the present study have suggested that the analysis of shame-proneness, frequency, and duration of feelings of shame and related occasions are crucial in psychotherapy process. The results of the study have emphasized the importance of taking shame-proneness into account and dealing with it in the psychotherapy process.

The aim of this study is to examine how shame and guilt are manifested in the narratives of parents that have been subject to violence by their children. Parent abuse is a form of violence that has recieved limited attention compared to other forms of violence. Previous research shows that serviceproviders lack knowledge and guidelines to assess the problem. Three qualitative semi-structured interviews were analysed using Labov and Waletzky’s (1967) model of the structure of narratives. Lewis (1971) theory of shame and guilt was applied to highlight the different aspects of the emotions manifested in the narratives. Four themes were identified using a first round thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006); (1) Personal guilt; instant and continually present, (2) Violence as an attack on one’s own feeling of self worth, (3) Children’s expression of guilt is intertwined with the parent’s feeling of guilt and (4) Professionals blaming the parents’ exacerbates an already difficult situation. The results indicate that parents experience strong feelings of guilt and that these feelings might need to be adressed in a non-judgemental environment for the best of both the parent and the child.
