Estudo tomográfico da região do Shelf mandibular em diferentes tipos faciais / Tomographic study of the mandibular buccal Shelf on different facial typesRibeiro, Annelise Nazareth Cunha 14 September 2018 (has links)
As imagens foram avaliadas no software Dolphin® (versão 11.0, Dolphin Imaging and Management Solutions, Chatsworth, CA - EUA). / Orthodontic anchorage has been of concern to orthodontists since the beginning of orthodontic practice. The transitory anchorage devices (miniscrew) have defined a new concept of anchorage in Orthodontics. Placement of the devices in a mandibular extra alveolar region allows the use of larger diameter screws that can be inserted parallel to the axial inclination of lower molars without interfering with the roots of the teeth that will be moved. The literature describes different facial types that differ in the predominance in relation to the vertical or horizontal facial growth pattern, configuring different mandibular bone conformations between the facial types. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate if there is difference in the thickness of the buccal bone in the MBS region between the facial types. For this retrospective study, a sample composed of 84 Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) of males and females adults, aged between 18 and 40 years, was selected. The images were evaluated in Dolphin® software (version 11.0, Dolphin Imaging and Manegement Solutions, Chatsworth, CA - USA). CT scans were divided into three groups according to the facial type, pre-determined by two-dimensional reconstructions in lateral norm for tracing cephalometric analysis proposed for Bjork-Jarabak\'s: 28 of the hyperdivergent facial type (Group 1), 28 of the neutral facial type (Group 2) and 28 of the hypodivergent facial type (Group 3). To respond the objectives of the study, the measurements were performed in the following regions: 1- Mesial root vestibular of the first lower molar of the left and right sides; 2 - Vestibular of the distal root of the first lower molar of the left and right sides; 3 - Vestibular between the first and second lower molars of the left and right sides; 4 - Vestibular mesial root of the second lower molar of the left and right sides; 5 - Vestibular of the distal root of the second lower molar of the left and right sides. Measurements were made at 3, 6 and 9 millimeters from the amelocemental junction of the first and second molars, apically in the axial cut, extending from the midpoint of the mesial and distal roots to the external border of the alveolar cortical bone adjacent. The results showed that, regarding age and gender, there was no significant statistical difference between the groups. The measurements of Group 1 showed that in the distal root of the 2nd molar to 9mm of the JAC presented, in average, values greater than 5mm, being considered possible of insertion of miniscrew in this region, in both sides. In group 2, sufficient space was observed for the installation of a miniscrew in the distal root of the 2nd molar to 6 mm and 9 mm of the JAC. For Group 3, measurements above 5 mm in the mesial root of the 2nd molars were observed at 9 mm from the JAC and in the distal root of 2nd to 6 mm and 9 mm of the JAC. Based on the results obtained, we consider that there is a difference in thickness between the facial types and that this factor should be considered during the planning for installation of orthodontic miniscrew, whereas for all groups the most suitable region is the vestibular of the distal root of second molars.

APLICAÇÃO DE ANTIOXIDANTES NATURAIS EM CARNE MECANICAMENTE SEPARADA (CMS) DE AVE / NATURAL ANTIOXIDANTS APPLICATION IN MECHANICALLY DEBONED POULTRY MEAT (MDPM)Pereira, Marlene Gomes 30 April 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to evaluate the antioxidant activity in vitro and its effects at
the oxidative stability of mechanically deboned poultry meat (MDPM) of five natural extracts. It was studied: the yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), the marcela (Achyrocline satureioides), a mixture of yerba mate (50%) and marcela (50%), green tea (Camellia sinensis) and propolis without alcohol. The synthetic antioxidant BHA (Butylated Hydroxianisole) was used as a positive control and the meat treated with no antioxidant was used as negative control. Natural extracts were evaluated in vitro
for quantification of phenolic and flavonols total content, for antioxidant activity, by DPPH radicalscavenging, Phosphomolybdenum complex and Reducing Power assay methods. All antioxidants were mixed separately in different and equal portions of mechanically deboned poultry meat, as follow: 0.50% of yerba mate, marcela and the mixture, 0.05% of green tea, 0.10% of própolis without alcohol and 0.02% of BHA. Samples of MDPM were packed and storage at 0 to +4ºC for 10 days. The
samples were evaluated each two days and the pH, TBARS and peroxide index were measured, as well as the Total Mesophilic Aerobic counts, Total Coliforms, E. coli, Lactic Bacteria, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella spp and Staphylococcus aureus. Surface and internal colour ( L*, a*, b*) were measured and pictures of each treatment were done. Green tea extract showed the higher (p<0.05)
phenolics contents and the higher (p<0.05) antioxidant activity in vitro compared to the other extracts.
Yerba mate extract showed the higher (p<0.05) flavonols content. Propolis without alcohol extract showed the lowest (p<0.05) phenolics, flavonols and antioxidant activity in vitro. Marcela had the best oxidative inhibitory effect at the MDPM, with the lowest TBARS values. Propolis extract showed the best performance for the meat colour stability. Natural antioxidant addition do not interfere at MDPM pH and peroxide values. Salmonella spp was not detected in any of the samples evaluated and
the results found to Staphylococcus aureus were in agreement with the Brazilian Mechanically Deboned Meat Legislation. The mixture of extracts showed the lowest (p<0.05) media for Total Mesophilic Aerobic counts. Propolis extract showed the lowest media count for Total Coliforms, E. coli and Clostridium perfringens. Yerba mate extract showed the lowest media count for Lactic Bacteria. The use of natural antioxidants should provide benefits in relation to the MDPM lipid oxidation and the microbiological growth inhibition. More researchs are necessary, looking for a better understanding about the action mechanisms of these extracts.
Coliformes totais, E. coli e Clostridium perfringens.

Sensory profile of Tilapia (Nile tilapia) : A comparison of Tilapia in vacuum package over timeBohman, Marcus, Magnusson, Per January 2016 (has links)
Fler svenskar vill konsumera mer inhemskt producerad fisk. / A large amount of Swedes has a desire to consume more nationally produced fish. Scandinavian Aquasystems produces and tries to introduce tilapia into the Swedish market. As a fish, tilapia has just begun making ways into Europe but is already a big commodity around the rest of the world. In addition, a sensory profile which tells how long the product remains sensorially suitable could be of help. This study aimed to create a sensory profile and to study its inherent effects of vacuum packaging over time. In creating the sensory profile, a QDA method was used. The study resulted in a variance of different attributes which of some could be categorized as either fresh related or spoilage related. It was found that fresh, farmed tilapia carried an indication of having a juicier and more tender texture. With storage there is chance of tilapia getting a more intense flavor of mud and metal, as well as a more intense odor of mud.

Sedimentary modelling and petrophysical characterisation of a Permian Deltaic Sequence (Kookfontein Formation), Tanqua Depocentre, SW Karoo Basin, South AfricaSonibare, Wasiu Adedayo 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study presents an outcrop characterisation and modelling of the excellently exposed
Permian Kookfontein Formation of the Ecca Group in the Tanqua-Karoo sub-Basin. The
sedimentary modelling (i.e. facies architecture and geometry) and petrophysical
characterisation followed a hierarchical and deterministic approach. Quantitative outcrop data
were based on the thirteen sedimentary cycles that characterise this stratigraphic succession at
the Pienaarsfontein se Berg locality; and these data were analysed using a combination of
detailed sedimentary log, gamma ray log and photopanel analysis, as well as petrographic
thin-section and grain size-based petrophysical analysis.
Based on texture and sedimentary structures, twelve depofacies are recognised which are
broadly grouped into four lithofacies associations i.e. sandstone facies, heterolithic facies,
mudstone facies and soft-sediment deformation facies; these depofacies and lithofacies form
the basic building blocks for the flooding surface-bounded facies succession (i.e. cycle). Also,
based on sediment stacking and cycle thickness patterns as well as relative position to the
shelf break, the succession is sub-divided into: (1) the lower Kookfontein member (i.e. cycles
1 to 5) exhibiting overall upward thickening and coarsening succession with progradational
stacking pattern; representing deposition of mid-slope to top-slope/shelf-margin succession,
and (2) the upper Kookfontein member (i.e. cycles 6 to 13) exhibiting overall upward
thickening and coarsening succession with aggradational stacking pattern; representing
deposition of top-slope/shelf-margin to outer shelf succession. Lateral juxtaposition of
observed vertical facies variations across each cycle in an inferably basinwards direction
exhibits upward change in features, i.e. decrease in gravity effects, increase in waves and
decrease in slope gradient of subsequent cycles. This systematic upward transition in features,
grading vertically from distal to proximal, with an overall upward thickening and coarsening
progradational to aggradational stacking pattern indicates a normal regressive prograding
delta. However, in detail, cycles 1-3 show some anomalies from a purely thickening and
coarsening upward succession.
Deposition of each cycle is believed to result from: (1) primary deposition by periodic
and probably sporadic mouthbar events governed by stream flow dynamics, and (2)
secondary remobilisation of sediments under gravity. The facies distribution, architecture and
geometry which governs the sedimentary heterogeneity within the deltaic succession is
therefore mainly a consequence of the series of mouthbar flooding events governed by
sediment supply and base-level changes. These series of flooding events resulted in the delineation of the studied stratigraphic interval into two main parasequence sets, i.e.
transgressive sequence set and the overlying regressive sequence set. This delineation was
aided through the identification of a maximum flooding surface (i.e. maximum landwards
shift in facies) above Cycle 3 in the field. The architecture and geometry of the ensuing deposystem
is interpreted to have been a river-dominated, gravitationally reworked and waveinfluenced
shelf edge Gilbert-type delta. Widespread distribution of soft-sediment
deformation structures, their growth-style and morphology within the studied succession are
empirically related to progradation of Gilbert-type mouthbars over the shelf break as well as
the slope gradients of the Kookfontein deltaic clinoformal geometry. Analysis of hypothetical
facies stacking and geometrical models suggests that the Kookfontein sedimentary cyclicity
might not be accommodation-driven but rather sediment supply-driven.
The workflow employed for petrophysical evaluation reveals that the distribution of
reservoir properties within the Kookfontein deltaic sandbody geometries is strongly
influenced both by depositional processes and by diagenetic factors, the latter being more
important with increased burial depth. The reservoir quality of the studied sandstones
decreases from proximal mouthbar sands, intermediate delta front to distal delta front facies.
The major diagenetic factors influencing the reservoir quality of the studied sandstones are
mechanical compaction, chemical compaction (pressure solution) and authigenic pore-filling
cements (quartz cement, feldspar alteration and replacement, calcite cement, chlorite and
illite). Mechanical compaction was a significant porosity reducing agent while cementation
by authigenic quartz and clay minerals (i.e. illite and chlorite) might play a major role in
permeability distribution. The porosity-permeability relationship trends obtained for the
studied sandstones show that there is a linear relationship between porosity and permeability.
The relative timing of diagenetic events as well as the percentages of porosity reduction by
compaction and cementation indicates that compaction is much more responsible for porosity
reduction than cementation.
The described internal heterogeneity in this work is below the resolution (i.e. mm-scale)
of most conventional well-logs, and therefore could supplement well-log data especially
where there is no borehole image and core data. The combination of ‗descriptive‘ facies
model and schematic geological model for this specific delta, and petrophysical
characterisation make the results of this study applicable to any other similar ancient deposystem
and particularly subsurface reservoir analogue.
oorstromingsoppervlakgebonde is.
verteenwoordig. Die laterale jukstaposisie van waargenome vertikale
fasiesvariasies oor elke siklus heen, in ‘n afleibare komwaartse rigting, vertoon opwaartse
oorstromingsoppervlak (d.w.s. maksimum landwaartse verskuiwing in fasies) bo siklus 3 in
kleiminerale (d.w.s. illiet en chloriet) moontlik ‘n belangrike rol by
suboppervlakreservoir-analoogstelsels.

The dynamics of suspended particles in a seasonally stratified coastal seaCross, Jaimie January 2013 (has links)
A comprehensive investigation into the relationship between physical forcing and sus- pended particles in the shallow shelf region of the Western English Channel has been conducted, in order to evaluate the temporal dynamics of suspended particle populations. Measurements were taken across tidal cycles and seasons at station L4, part of the Western Channel Observatory (WCO), using the combination of a free-fall microstructure profiler and holographic imaging. Confirmation that L4 is weakly stratified is given, and that the formation of the seasonal thermocline is substantially altered by the spring-neap cy- cle. Stratification is variable and prone to periodic and partial erosion from atmospheric forcing during any point in any season. L4 undergoes moderate turbulent dissipation, principally as a result of tidal forcing. Typically, values of ε do not exceed 10−4 W kg−1 . L4 also exhibits tidal asymmetry, chiefly in response to stratification which, albeit weak, is frequently able to suppress turbulence when generated from the sea bed. The potential energy anomaly is small at L4, as expected for a weakly-stratified environment. Maxi- mum values in summer were shown to not exceed 50 J m−3 . Values of bed stress, τ0 , are rarely greater than around 0.18 N m−2 . Nonetheless, the critical erosion threshold falls below this, and is therefore smaller than that observed in similar locations around the UK. Seasonality in the amount of material resuspended from the seabed is important at L4. The presence of certain biological particles strongly influence particle size and may also determine if a given particle is lifted from the bed. Particles ≥ 200 μm are relatively rare, the site is dominated by particles smaller than this value in line with many other UK sites. Under certain conditions the theoretical maximum limit of particle size, the Kolmogorov length scale, does not hold and many examples of occasions when this threshold is exceeded are shown. This may generate important consequences in subsequent work undertaken at this site and other temperate shelf locations globally, particularly as these results indicate that maximum particle size appears to be governed less by the size of the local turbulent eddies and more by the presence of biological particles. This is another key seasonal component to particle dynamics in the Western English Channel. Phytoplankton populations are readily advected into and out of the L4 site, calling into question the current sampling strategy of the WCO to rely exclusively upon point measurements. Small increases in atmospheric forcing have the ability to rapidly disperse patches of phytoplankton, possibly to the point of cell mortality. Traditional sampling techniques for assessing zooplankton density have been shown to radically underestimate the number of animals present at L4, which will increase error estimates on current ecosystem models.

Investigations into zooplankton assemblages off the west coast of ScotlandRichard, Jocelyn M. January 1992 (has links)
Zooplankton assemblages were examined from waters off the west coast of Scotland encompassing the Firths of Lorn and Clyde, the North Channel, and the Malin Shelf. Size fractionated samples (coarse, >1000μm; medium, 1000μm-330μm; fine, 330μm-180μm) were collected with a submersible pump from 10m and 30m depth in March (1987) and May (1986) providing a composite picture of the fauna in early and late spring conditions, respectively. The feasibility of using image analysis as a method for processing zooplankton samples was examined. Although a programme was successfully operated to obtain individual measurement data, much work is still required before a fully automated programme for routine use by planktologists is available. Total zooplankton numbers and biomass, and species distributions and relative abundances were examined. Species assemblages were identified using multivariate analyses. Biomass and abundance spectra by size were examined for the major station groupings. In general, meroplankton dominated the fauna in the Firth of Lorn while large numbers of Calanus spp. occurred in the Firth of Clyde. Small copepods such as Oithona spp. were characteristic of the assemblage on the Malin Shelf. Salinity, followed by temperature, showed the strongest association with the observed station clusters. Chlorophyll a and depth did not generally appear to influence station groupings. The potential for the mixing and exchange of zooplankton between the regions of the study area was evaluated. The results suggest that zooplankton may be entrained from the Firth of Clyde by the Scottish Coastal Current during the spring period. The Malin Shelf may also be an important source of zooplankton for the Firth of Lorn during winter months when an onshore flow of Atlantic water occurs.

Framework and Evolution of a Transgressed Delta Lobe: The St. Bernard Shoals, Gulf of MexicoRogers, Bryan E. 15 May 2009 (has links)
Four modern shoals on the Louisiana continental shelf are proposed to have formed through transgression, marine reworking, and submergence of Mississippi River deltaic lobes. However, one of these shoals, the St. Bernard Shoals, is dissimilar to the other shoals in morphology and stratigraphy. Understanding the processes that lead to these differences resulted in the development of a wholly new model for subaqueous shoal evolution. The results of this study suggest that the St. Bernard Shoals are transgressive remnants of a near shelf-edge delta lobe that was transgressed and truncated by marine processes after fluvial abandonment. Subsequent to truncation, the shoals formed through subaqueous excavation and reworking of coarse grained sediment contained within underlying distributary channels by hurricane related marine currents. As a result the shoals are bound at their base by a ravinement surface and lie directly upon progradational facies associated with previously unrecognized southern progradation of the La Loutre distributary network.

Investigação numérica das massas de água do Mar de Ross usando o Regional Ocean Modeling System - ROMS / Numerical Investigation of the Ross Sea water masses using the Regional Ocean Modeling System - ROMSTonelli, Marcos Henrique Maruch 14 April 2014 (has links)
Dense water formation around Antarctica is recognized as a significant process that significantly impacts the global climate, since that\'s where the linkage between the upper and lower limbs of Global Thermohaline Circulation takes place. Assessing whether these processes may be affected by rapid climate changes and all the eventual feedbacks is crucial to fully understand the ocean heat transport and to provide quality future climate projections. Applying the Coordinated Ocean-Ice Reference (CORE) interannual forcing we have run a 50-year simulation (1948-2007) using ROMS with a new sea ice/ice shelf thermodynamics module. Another 100-year simulation forced with CORE normal year was previously run to provide stable starting fields. The normal year consists of single annual cycle of all the data that are representative of climatological conditions over decades and can be applied repeatedly for as many years of model integration as necessary. The 60-year forcing has interannually varying data from 1948 to 2007, which allows validation of model output with ocean observations. Both experiments employed a periodic circumpolar variable resolution grid reaching less than 5 km at the southern border. By applying the OMP water masses separating scheme, we were able to identify the main Ross Sea water masses: Antarctic Surface Water (AASW), Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW), Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) and Shelf Water (SW), further separated into Ice Shelf Water (ISW) and High Salinity Shelf Water (HSSW). Results are consistent with previous observational studies (Bergamasco, 2002; Orsi & Wiederwohl, 2009; Budillon, 2011). The interannual simulation indicates that the Southern Ocean is becoming warmer and less salty. The CDW poleward heat transport increased while shelf waters salinity as well as the AABW salinity decreased during the simulation period, consistent with Johnson & Doney (2006), who have reported the export of less dense AABW. ROMS capability to represent ISW, HSSW and AABW is an important contribution to climate studies, since IPCC class models seem unable to provide reliable representations of such important processes, which may lead to projections of more realistic scenarios. This is significantly improved in this study by including more explicit sea ice/ice shelf parameretization. ROMS is able to reproduce cryosphere-linked mechanisms of dense water formation around Antarctica.

Mobilidade Sedimentar na Plataforma Leste Brasileira entre o Rio de Contas (BA) e o Rio Doce (ES): Controle Morfológico e do Clima de Ondas / Sedimentary Mobility on the Eastern Brazilian Continental Shelf between Contas River (BA) and Doce River (ES): Morphological and Wave Climate ControlsLavenére-wanderley, Ana Amelia de Oliveira 04 May 2018 (has links)
The sedimentary dynamics on a stretch of the Brazilian continental shelf was analyzed through a combined approach between wave climate analysis (WAVEWATCH III), shallow water wave propagation modeling (MIKE 21 SW) and equations estimating the transport of particles as a function of bed shear stress by the waves. Thus, based on the wave climate of the region, sediment mobility potentials are estimated in response to several forcing conditions. Wave climate is characterized by the predominance of east waves in front of Ilhéus (60%), 20% from southeast quadrant and 15% from south. In front of Caravelas a wave spectrum is characterized by 40% from east quadrant, 15% from southeast and 35% from south. Continental shelf width discontinuity influences wave climate at Ilhéus, attenuating waves from south quadrant. The results indicate sediment mobility up to 50 m depth on the Ilhéus shelf and up to 20 m on the Abrolhos shelf along the entire year; however, more sporadic energetic events are able to mobilize sediments up to 200 m depth on the Ilhéus shelf and up to 100 m on the Caravelas shelf. Larger particle mobility, such as the rhodoliths of the Abrolhos shelf, the largest known rhodolite field in the world, was analyzed using the Shields parameter, which takes into account particle size and density. The results indicate that the mobility of Abrolhos rhodolites is mainly conditioned by the occurrence of more energetic events, especially in autumn. The regions with the greatest mobility are the northern portion, near the shelf break and the center-south portion of the shelf, both with depths between 20 and 40 m. The detailed knowledge on sediment transport in the Brazilian continental shelf contributes to the understanding of sedimentary dynamics in the region. The complex morphology of the continental shelf, combined with the incident wave climate, are fundamental factors in sediment mobilization potential.
