An English for Specific Purposes Curriculum to Prepare English Learners to Become Nursing AssistantsRomo, Abel Javier 11 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This project details the designing and implementation of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Curriculum to prepare English learners to become Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC) in Provo, Utah. UVRMC, which is owned by Intermountain Health Care (IHC), employs a group of about 40 non-native speakers of English. They work as housekeepers and have interest in learning English and consequently acquiring new skills they could use in better jobs to improve the quality of their lives. UVRMC would like these employees to obtain additional education in order to provide them with better employment opportunities. UVRMC allowed two graduate students at the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Brigham University to design and implement an ESP course to help UVRMC housekeepers improve their language skills in preparation to apply and participate in a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course offered through IHC University. This report covers the linguistic needs analysis of the participants, situational analysis of UVRMC in terms of the support given to the curriculum, the designing of goals and objectives, the syllabus, the teaching of the syllabus, some material development, and the assessment of language learning. It also describes the instruments used to obtain information during each step of the designing of the curriculum and its implementation, analyzes that information, presents results, assesses the curriculum's efficacy, and explains the implications for other ESP curricula in the field of nursing and other scientific fields.

Model vir kurrikulumontwikkeling in verpleegkunde / A curriculum development model for nursingDe Villiers, Louise, 1953- 06 1900 (has links)
Teoretiese navorsing is onderneem om 'n model vir kurrikulumontwikkeling vir die Diploma vir
Registrasie as Verpleegkundige (algemene, psigiatriese, gemeenskaps-) en Vroedvrou te ontwikkel.
Twee hooffaktore beinvloed verpleegonderwys.
formuleer / The researcher undertook theoretical research to develop a curriculum development model for the
Diploma for Registration as a Nurse (General, Psychiatric, Community) and Midwife.
There are two main tendencies that influence nursing education. On a global level nursing education
is influenced by realities that are inherent in an information technology-driven world. This requires
the development of critical thinking skills, adaptability to constant social change and a commitment to
life-long learning. Nationally, nursing education is influenced by a national health system requiring
trained nurses who are able to render comprehensive health care. A situation analysis resulted in the
identification of two main concepts that influence the nursing curriculum namely, critical thinking
and comprehensive health care.
Previous research indicates that nurse educators are outdated in terms of developments in education.
This can have negative consequences for innovative curriculum development in nursing in order to
position the nursing profession strategically to meet the demands of the next century. This limitation
prompted the researcher to conduct research that was aimed at designing a comprehensive curriculum
development strategy to serve as a practical guideline on how to implement curriculum development
in nursing.
Based on an analysis of the concept curriculum, a situation analysis and the interpretation thereof: the
researcher conceptualized the Curriculum Development Model for Nursing. The model will enable
nurse educators to effect fundamental curriculum change and the development of a relevant
curriculum by completing specified curriculum development tasks systematically. The implications of
the concepts critical thinking and comprehensive health care for the nursing curriculum, were
elucidated by formulating criteria for a new nursing curriculum.
Key terms: curriculum; curriculum development; curriculum foundation; curriculum structure;
curriculum design; situation analysis; critical thinking; reflective practice; comprehensive health care;
comprehensive nursing curriculum; community based curriculum; problem based learning; media
assisted learning; ~ve learning; reflective learning; experiential learning; mediated learning. / Health Studies / D.Litt. et Phil. (Advanced Nursing Science)

Mathematics anxiety as a variable in the constructivist approach to the teaching of secondary school mathematicsHawkey, Peter Leonard 11 1900 (has links)
Mathematics anxiety is a personal characteristic which is widespread and continuing. It has a debilitating effect on mathematics performance and contributes to perceptions and attitudes that perpetuate a dislike for mathematics and a lack of confidence when dealing with mathematical problems. An investigation of relevant literature on mathematics anxiety identifies sources and symptoms and emphasises a need for a comprehensive approach to remediation. The historical development of an appropriate measuring instrument is documented
and statistical evidence is used to create a mathematics anxiety rating scale suitable for measuring anxiety levels of secondary school pupils and student teachers. The extensive literature interest, research publications and remedial programmes emphasise the problem of mathematics anxiety and thus the need for a comprehensive approach to remediation. Mathematics teaching and curriculum design is expounded to provide the necessary direction to the alleviation of mathematics anxiety. General perspectives on curriculum design are discussed and
a cyclical systems approach is recommended. Elements of this approach are detailed and are linked to important personal characteristics to add a humanistic and socio-cultural view of curriculum design in mathematics. The didactic viability of constructivism as an approach to mathematics curriculum design is investigated. Constructivism embodies a philosophy and a methodology which addresses the critical aspects influencing mathematics anxiety. Classroom topics and activities are reviewed in terms of a constructivist approach and the
sources of mathematics anxiety are discussed from a constructivist perspective. A longitudinal case study of pupils during their five years at secondary school as well as a study involving student teachers was undertaken. Mathematics performance, perceptions, attitudes and levels of anxiety were investigated by means of tests, questionnaires, and mathematics anxiety rating scales. The statistical results of this research provide evidence to support a comprehensive approach to the remediation of mathematics anxiety. Constructivism is seen as the synthesis of critical aspects of teaching and curriculum development which will stem the perpetuation of mathematics anxiety. Constructivism provides the didactic approach to develop each individual's intellectual autonomy and mathematics power, by instilling a problem solving attitude and a self-confidence when doing mathematics. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D.
