Why do players buy in-game items : An exploration into microtransactions and their effect on flow

Karboub, Adam Christopher, Orozco Sebastian, Marc January 2023 (has links)
Background: In the last couple years, the free to play sector in gaming has taken a rise compared to their pay to play counterparts, being able to generate up to 85% of all gaming revenue. More and more game developers have opted to change their game from a paid model to a free-to-play business model, with prominent cases being games like CS:GO and Overwatch. It all started with cosmetics and skins, but companies started to develop new ways to get players into the cycle of spending money in free-to-play games. Purpose: For this reason, the purpose of this study focuses on exploring how the purchase of microtransactions in free-to-play games impacts the way players experience flow. Similarly, we also aim to learn what happens after the initial purchase and how, by using money in this way, players can enhance the quality of their overall play time. Method: We conduct a qualitative study examining how microtransactions impact flow through conducting a set of 21 interviews with players from different platforms and games, 4 individual think aloud protocols, and various relevant reddit posts. Conclusion: Our findings build upon past research, illustrating how there are contrasting effects regarding how microtransactions impact flow. The results challenge previous flow literature, incorporating the novel view that microtransactions and the social context can also help trigger and destroy flow.

“Drugs make me myself” : En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys av ungdomsdramer Euphoria ochSkins UK

Lam, Van Sopheaktra, Pasic, Ajla January 2024 (has links)
Global alcohol- and drug consumption is a big health problem, despite the fact that the amount of usage has decreased throughout the years. Our interest for this study arose because earlier research showed that films, series and television can affect viewers' perceptions regarding alcohol- and drug use. Thus we were interested in examining how alcohol- and drug use is constructed in the teen dramas Skins UK and Euphoria, considering that these series manage subjects such as drugs, alcohol and addiction. The method this study conducted was multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) because this method is used to analyze audiovisual materials. The theoretical framework for this study consists of poststructuralism, socialsemiotics and filmsemiotics to analyze and identify discourses in our empirical material. Our empirical material was analyzed by looking at poses, facial expressions, lexical choices, distance, sound and music. The results showed that the construction of alcohol- and drug use in the respective series was more negative than positive. Four discourses were identified from the results: escapism, anxiety management, connection and self-destructiveness.

Atividade antioxidante de extratos vegetais: estudo das condições de extração e aplicação em sistema lipídico / Antioxidant activity of vegetable extracts: study of extraction conditions and evaluation in lipid system

Cruz, Richtier Gonçalves da 15 July 2014 (has links)
The oxidation is one of major deterioration in food lipids, causing losses in quality and nutritional value. To avoid this, antioxidants are used and the phenolic compounds are the main component of antioxidant applied and presented in foods, and also may be present in agroindustrial residues, usually discarded by the industry. The objective of this study was to identify ideal conditions to extract phenolic compounds from acerola fruits (Malpighia emarginata), coffee grounds (Coffea arabica) and lychee skins (Litchi chinensis) by means of surface response methodology (RSM), evaluation of antioxidant activity of extracts in in vitro essays, application of selected extracts in emulsions systems during accelerated test. The response surface methodology was applied to each material in order to identify the effects of temperature, ethanol concentration and time in extraction processes. Antioxidant activity by DPPH stabilization and its kinectis evaluation were performed and compared to TBHQ. Furthermore, selected extracts (50 to 200 mg.kg-1) were added in emulsion system and subject to accelerated oxidation test. RSM have shown that phenolic compounds of each material are extractable in different conditions. Acerola fruits aqueous extracts present maximum phenolic content (175.87 mg GAE.g-1) and the higher DPPH antioxidant activity, followed by coffee grounds and lychee skins extracts (26.37 and 25.87 mg GAE.g-1). Acerola extracts also presented the best stabilization of DPPH in kinetic study, with results comparable to the TBHQ effect (650.53 TEAC). Acerola extract added to the emulsion showed a good antioxidant effect in all concentrations during accelerated test, resulting in final oxidation levels (mmol hydroperoxides kg-1) comparable to TBHQ in the same concentration. Coffee grounds and lychee skins extracts were not efficient in avoid hydroperoxides increasing. Results showed the importance of studying extractions conditions for each material. Acerola extract showed the most efficient antioxidant activity both in DPPH kinetics DPPH stabilization and inhibition of lipid oxidation in the system studied. However, further work is needed to evaluate different oxidation systems, as well as toxicological studies to ensure safe levels of consumption.

Flexible and fragmentable tandem photosensitive nanocrystal skins

Akhavan, S., Uran, C., Bozok, B., Gungor, K., Kelestemur, Y., Lesnyak, V., Gaponik, N., Eychmüller, A., Demir, H. V. 16 December 2019 (has links)
We proposed and demonstrated the first account of large-area, semi-transparent, tandem photosensitive nanocrystal skins (PNSs) constructed on flexible substrates operating on the principle of photogenerated potential buildup, which avoid the need for applying an external bias and circumvent the currentmatching limitation between junctions. We successfully fabricated and operated the tandem PNSs composed of single monolayers of colloidal water-soluble CdTe and CdHgTe nanocrystals (NCs) in adjacent junctions on a Kapton polymer tape. Owing to the usage of a single NC layer in each junction, noise generation was significantly reduced while keeping the resulting PNS films considerably transparent. In each junction, photogenerated excitons are dissociated at the interface of the semi-transparent Al electrode and the NC layer, with holes migrating to the contact electrode and electrons trapped in the NCs. As a result, the tandem PNSs lead to an open-circuit photovoltage buildup equal to the sum of those of the two single junctions, exhibiting a total voltage buildup of 128.4 mV at an excitation intensity of 75.8 μW cm⁻² at 350 nm. Furthermore, we showed that these flexible PNSs could be bent over 3.5 mm radius of curvature and cut out in arbitrary shapes without damaging the operation of individual parts and without introducing any significant loss in the total sensitivity. These findings indicate that the NC skins are promising as building blocks to make low-cost, flexible, large-area UV/visible sensing platforms with highly efficient full-spectrum conversion.

Optimizing the Extraction of Phenolic Antioxidant Compounds from Peanut Skins

Ballard, Tameshia Shaunt'a 29 July 2008 (has links)
Peanut skins are a low-value byproduct of peanut blanching operations. They have been shown to contain significant levels of phenolic compounds with demonstrated antioxidant properties. The effects of two types of extraction methods: solid-liquid extraction (SLE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) on the recovery of phenolic compounds from peanut skins were investigated. Response surface methodology was used to optimize extraction conditions based on total phenolic content (TPC), ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) activity and trans-resveratrol content. The protective effect of peanut skin extracts (PSE) against hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂)-induced oxidative stress in human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) and the effect of PSE on lipid oxidation in commercial peanut butter were also evaluated. In the SLE method, EtOH was found to be the most efficient extraction solvent followed by MeOH, water and EA. Despite EtOH extracts having a higher TPC, samples extracted with MeOH demonstrated slightly higher ORAC activity. Resveratrol was identified in MeOH extracts but was not found in EtOH, water or EA extracts. In the MAE procedure, the maximum predicted TPC under the optimized conditions was 144 mg phenols/g skins compared to 118 mg/g with SLE. The maximum predicted ORAC activity was 2789 μmol TE/g as opposed to 2149 μmol TE/g with the SLE method. MAE was able to extract more phenolic compounds (with higher antioxidant activity) in a faster time than the SLE procedure. In addition, resveratrol was identified in PSE derived from MAE although at relatively low levels. PSE were found to have some protective effects against oxidative stress in HBMEC. Higher doses of PSE appeared to have a slightly cytotoxic effect. However, the data were highly variable which made it difficult to arrive at any definitive conclusions regarding the potential benefits of PSE in preventing oxidative damage to cells. In the PB experiment, hexanal levels over the storage period were not high enough for the samples to be considered oxidized. However, hexanal values of PB samples treated with PSE were lower than the control throughout storage, which suggests that PSE may provide some protection against oxidation of PB. / Ph. D.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted great attentions in the field of electronics, sensors, healthcare, and energy conversion. Such emerging applications have driven the carbon nanotube research in a rapid fashion. Indeed, the structure control over CNTs has inspired an intensive research vortex due to the high promises in electronic and optical device applications. Here, this in-depth review is anticipated to provide insights into the controllable synthesis and applications of high-quality CNTs. First, the general synthesis and post-purification of CNTs are briefly discussed. Then, the state-of-the-art electronic device applications are discussed, including field-effect transistors, gas sensors, DNA biosensors, and pressure gauges. Besides, the optical sensors are delivered based on the photoluminescence. In addition, energy applications of CNTs are discussed such as thermoelectric energy generators. Eventually, future opportunities are proposed for the Internet of Things (IoT) oriented sensors, data processing, and artificial intelligence
