[pt] Um dos objetivos desta tese é analisar o custo computacional do método de Monte Carlo aplicado a um problema modelo de dinâmica, considerando incertezas na força de atrito. O sistema mecânico a ser estudado é composto por um oscilador de um grau de liberdade que se desloca sobre uma esteira em movimento. Considera-se a existência de atrito seco entre a massa do oscilador e a esteira. Devido a uma descontinuidade na força de atrito, a dinâmica resultante pode ser dividida em duas fases que se alternam, chamadas de stick e slip. Neste estudo, um parâmetro da força de atrito dinâmica é modelado como uma variável aleatória. A propagação de incerteza é estudada por meio da aplicação do método de Monte Carlo, considerando três abordagens diferentes para calcular aproximações da resposta dos problemas de valor inicial que modelam a dinâmica do problema: NV) aproximações numéricas calculadas usando método de Runge-Kutta de quarta e quinta ordens com passo de integração variável; NF) aproximações numéricas calculadas usando método de Runge-Kutta de quarta ordem com passo de integração fixo; AN) aproximação analítica obtida com o método de múltiplas escalas. Nas abordagens NV e NF, para cada valor de parâmetro, uma aproximação numérica foi calculada. Já para a AN, apenas uma aproximação analítica foi calculada e avaliada para os diferentes valores usados. Entre as variáveis aleatórias de interesse associadas ao custo computacional do método de Monte Carlo, encontram-se o tempo de execução e o espaço em disco consumido. Devido à propagação de incertezas, a resposta do sistema é um processo estocástico com uma sequência aleatória de fases de stick e slip. Essa sequência pode ser caracterizada pelas seguintes variáveis aleatórias: instantes de transição entre as fases de stick e slip, suas durações e o número de fases. Para estudar as variáveis associadas ao custo computacional e ao processo estocástico foram construídos modelos estatísticos, histogramas normalizados e gráficos de dispersão. O objetivo é estudar a dependência entre as variáveis do processo estocástico e o custo computacional. Porém, a construção destas análises não é simples devido à dimensão do problema e à impossibilidade de visualização das distribuições conjuntas de vetores aleatórios de três ou mais dimensões. / [en] One of the objectives of this thesis is to analyze the computational cost of the Monte Carlo method applied to a toy problem concerning the dynamics of a mechanical system with uncertainties in the friction force. The system is composed by an oscillator placed over a moving belt. The existence of dry friction between the two elements in contact is considered. Due to a discontinuity in the frictional force, the resulting dynamics can be divided into two alternating phases, called stick and slip. In this study, a parameter of the dynamic friction force is modeled as a random variable. Uncertainty propagation is analyzed by applying the Monte Carlo method, considering three different strategies to compute approximations to the initial value problems that model the system s dynamics: NV) numerical approximations computed with the Runge-Kutta method of 4th and 5th orders, with variable integration time-step; NF) numerical approximations computed with the Runge-Kutta method of 4th order, with a fixed integration time-step; AN) analytical approximation obtained with the multiple scale method. In the NV and NF strategies, for each parameter value, a numerical approximation was calculated, whereas for the AN strategy, only one analytical approximation was calculated and evaluated for the different values of parameters considered. The run-time and the storage are among the random variables of interest associated with the computational cost of the Monte Carlo method. Due to uncertainty propagation, the system response is a stochastic process given by a random sequence of stick and slip phases. This sequence can be characterized by the following random variables: the transition instants between the stick and slip phases, their durations and the number of phases. To study the random processes and the variables related to the computational costs, statistical models, normalized histograms and scatterplots were built. Afterwards, a joint analysis was performed to study the dependece between the variables of the random process and the computational cost. However, the construction of these analyses is not a simple task due to the impossibility of viewing the distributionto of joint distributions of random vectors of three or more.

Low cost integration of Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) with Enhanced Stability Program (ESP)

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) systems (also known as Active Chassis systems) are mechatronic systems developed for improving vehicle comfort, handling and/or stability. Traditionally, most of these systems have been individually developed and manufactured by various suppliers and utilised by automotive manufacturers. These decentralised control systems usually improve one aspect of vehicle performance and in some cases even worsen some other features of the vehicle. Although the benefit of the stand-alone VDC systems has been proven, however, by increasing the number of the active systems in vehicles, the importance of controlling them in a coordinated and integrated manner to reduce the system complexity, eliminate the possible conflicts as well as expand the system operational envelope, has become predominant. The subject of Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control (IVDC) for improving the overall vehicle performance in the existence of several VDC active systems has recently become the topic of many research and development activities in both academia and industries Several approaches have been proposed for integration of vehicle control systems, which range from the simple and obvious solution of networking the sensors, actuators and processors signals through different protocols like CAN or FlexRay, to some sort of complicated multi-layered, multi-variable control architectures. In fact, development of an integrated control system is a challenging multidisciplinary task and should be able to reduce the complexity, increase the flexibility and improve the overall performance of the vehicle. The aim of this thesis is to develop a low-cost control scheme for integration of Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) system with Enhanced Stability Program (ESP) system to improve driver comfort as well as vehicle safety. In this dissertation, a systematic approach toward a modular, flexible and reconfigurable control architecture for integrated vehicle dynamics control systems is proposed which can be implemented in real time environment with low computational cost. The proposed control architecture, so named “Integrated Vehicle Control System (IVCS)”, is customised for integration of EPAS and ESP control systems. IVCS architecture consists of three cascade control loops, including high-level vehicle control, low-level (steering torque and brake slip) control and smart actuator (EPAS and EHB) control systems. The controllers are designed based on Youla parameterisation (closed-loop shaping) method. A fast, adaptive and reconfigurable control allocation scheme is proposed to coordinate the control of EPAS and ESP systems. An integrated ESP & ESP HiL/RCP system including the real EPAS and Electro Hydraulic Brake (EHB) smart actuators integrated with a virtual vehicle model (using CarMaker/HiL®) with driver in the loop capability is designed and utilised as a rapid control development platform to verify and validate the developed control systems in real time environment. Integrated Vehicle Dynamic Control is one of the most promising and challenging research and development topics. A general architecture and control logic of the IVDC system based on a modular and reconfigurable control allocation scheme for redundant systems is presented in this research. The proposed fault tolerant configuration is applicable for not only integrated control of EPAS and ESP system but also for integration of other types of the vehicle active systems which could be the subject of future works.

The Nucleation and Evolution of Riedel Shear Zones as Deformation Bands in Porous Sandstone

Riedel shear zones are geometric fault patterns commonly associated with strike-slip fault systems. The progressive evolution of natural Riedel shear zones within the Navajo Sandstone of southern Utah is interpreted from the spatial evolution of small-scale, incipient Proto-Riedel Zones (PRZs) to better-developed Riedel shear zones using field mapping and three-dimensional digital modeling. PRZs nucleate as a tabular zone of localized shearing marked by en èchelon deformation bands, each of which is no more than a few mm wide and tens of cm long, and oriented at 55° - 85° to the trend of the zone. With increasing strain, deformation bands and sedimentary markers are sheared ductily through granular flow and assume a sigmoidal form. The temporal and spatial evolution of bands comprising a Riedel shear zone suggests that PRZs nucleate as transitional-compactional deformation bands under localized, supra-lithostatic fluid pressure. Subsequent bands develop under modified regional stresses as conjugate shear fractures within the strain- hardened axis of the PRZ. These antithetic driven systems are not compatible with traditional synthetic driven models of Riedel shear zones. Unlike most synthetic driven examples, these antithetic driven systems are not controlled by preexisting "basement" structures, thus their geometries reflect a primary propagation or secondary passive deformation mechanism.

A new, robust, and generic method for the quick creation of smooth paths and near time-optimal path tracking

Robotics has been the subject of academic study from as early as 1948. For much of this time, study has focused on very specific applications in very well controlled environments. For example, the first commercial robots (1961) were introduced in order to improve the efficiency of production lines. The tasks undertaken by these robots were simple, and all that was required of a control algorithm was speed, repetitiveness and reliability in these environments. Now however, robots are being used to move around autonomously in increasingly unpredictable environments, and the need for robotic control algorithms that can successfully react to such conditions is ever increasing. In addition to this there is an ever-increasing array of robots available, the control algorithms for which are often incompatible. This can result in extensive redesign and large sections of code being re-written for use on different architectures. The thesis presented here is that a new generic approach can be created that provides robust high quality smooth paths and time-optimal path tracking to substantially increase applicability and efficiency of autonomous motion plans. The control system developed to support this thesis is capable of producing high quality smooth paths, and following these paths to a high level of accuracy in a robust and near time-optimal manner. The system can control a variety of robots in environments that contain 2D obstacles of various shapes and sizes. The system is also resilient to sensor error, spatial drift, and wheel-slip. In achieving the above, this system provides previously unavailable functionality by generically creating and tracking high quality paths so that only minor and clear adjustments are required between different robots and also be being capable of operating in environments that contain high levels of perturbation. The system is comprised of five separate novel component algorithms in order to cater for five different motion challenges facing modern robots. Each algorithm provides guaranteed functionality that has previously been unavailable in respect to its challenges. The challenges are: high quality smooth movement to reach n-dimensional goals in regions without obstacles, the navigation of 2D obstacles with guaranteed completeness, high quality smooth movement for ground robots carrying out 2D obstacle navigation, near time-optimal path tracking, and finally, effective wheel-slip detection and compensation. In meeting these challenges the algorithms have tackled adherence to non-holonomic constraints, applicability to a wide range of robots and tasks, fast real-time creation of paths and controls, sensor error compensation, and compensation for perturbation. This thesis presents each of the above algorithms individually. It is shown that existing methods are unable to produce the results provided by this thesis, before detailing the operation of each algorithm. The methodology employed is varied in accordance with each of the five core challenges. However, a common element of methodology throughout the thesis is that of gradient descent within a new type of potential field, which is dynamic and capable of the simultaneous creation of high-quality paths and the controls required to execute them. By relating global to local considerations through subgoals, this methodology (combined with other elements) is shown to be fully capable of achieving the aims of the thesis. It is concluded that the produced system represents a novel and significant contribution as there is no other system (to the author’s knowledge) that provides all of the functionality given. For each component algorithm there are many control systems that provide one or more of its features, but none that are capable of all of the features. Applications for this work are wide ranging as it is comprised of five component algorithms each applicable in their own right. For example, high quality smooth paths may be created and followed in any dimensionality of space if time optimality and obstacle avoidance are not required. Broadly speaking, and in summary, applications are to ground-based robotics in the areas of smooth path planning, time optimal travel, and compensation for unpredictable perturbation.

Rhéologie des polymères fondus à hauts taux de cisaillement : application à la microinjection / Polymer melts rheology at high shear rate : microinjection molding application

La rhéologie à hauts taux de cisaillement pour deux polymères, le PEHD semi-cristallin et le PMMA amorphe a été étudiée. Des outils de rhéométrie classique, un rhéomètre plan-plan en mode dynamique, et un rhéomètre capillaire, ont été utilisés dans des conditions extrêmes (avec des filières pour la rhéométrie capillaire de diamètres allant jusqu'à 0,3 mm) mais les dépouillements de ces résultats ont été fait suivant les hypothèses conventionnelles en négligeant les instabilités et les phénomènes physiques qui interviennent lors de ces écoulements.Nous avons par la suite développé un modèle mathématique de l'écoulement dans un capillaire pour rendre compte de l'importance des différents phénomènes physiques qui peuvent avoir lieu dans des écoulements extrêmes, à savoir l'échauffement et la piezodépendance de la viscosité, la compressibilité et le glissement à la paroi. Les résultats du modèle développé ont été comparés avec les résultats expérimentaux.Nous avons aidé au développement d'une presse de microinjection originale et nous l'avons testée avec un moule de plaque instrumenté d'épaisseur allant jusqu'à 0,2 mm. Nous avons montré qu'il était possible de réaliser des pièces de qualité ce qui est avéré par des mesures de pression, vitesse et de température bien reproductibles. Nous avons exploité les données rhéologiques expérimentales dans la modélisation de la phase de remplissage avec le logiciel de calcul Rem3D. Des corrélations entre les mesures expérimentales et les calculs ont été réalisées en comparant l'évolution des pressions dans le système d'alimentation et dans l'empreinte. / Rheology at high shear rate for both polymers, semi-crystalline HDPE and amorphous PMMA was studied. Classical rheometry tools, plane-plane dynamic mode rheometer and capillary rheometer, were used in extreme conditions (with channels diameters for capillary rheometry up to 0.3 mm). However, analyses of these results were made following conventional assumptions neglecting instabilities and physical phenomena involved in these flows.We then developed a mathematical model of a capillary flow in to reflect the importance of different physical phenomena that can occur in extreme flows, namely heating, pressure dependency of viscosity, compressibility and the wall slip. The results of the developed model were compared with experimental results.We helped develop a press microinjection original and we tested it with instrumented plate mold with thickness up to 0.2 mm. We have shown that it is possible to make quality parts which are proven by well reproducible pressure, speed and temperature measurements. We used the experimental rheological data in filling phase modeling with the calculation software Rem3D. Correlations between experimental measurements and calculations were carried out by comparing the pressure in the filling system and the cavity.

Simulation par éléments finis du comportement mécanique de polycristaux chargés en hydrogène / Finite-element simulations of the mecanical behaviour of hydrogen-charged polycristals

Ces travaux ont pour but d'évaluer l'apport de la modélisation numérique pour étudier la modification de la plasticité des polycristaux métalliques par l'hydrogène absorbé. De précédents travaux ont proposé une quantification expérimentale de cet effet, grâce à des mesures par microscopie à force atomique (AFM) des marches de glissement émergeant à la surface d'agrégats polycristallins (316L), chargés ou non en hydrogène.Après avoir étudié l'impact de la modélisation géométrique sur la précision des résultats numériques, nous proposons une méthode permettant d'analyser les résultats AFM grâce à la modélisation numérique, en prenant en compte le niveau de déformation plastique à l'échelle du grain et le fait que les mesures AFM sont des projections des dimensions "réelles" des marches de glissement: le nombre de marches de glissement émises et l'espacement inter-marche. Ces quantités permettent alors de comparer les comportement plastiques observés expérimentalement sur différents agrégats, et donc de quantifier l'impact de l'hydrogène absorbé sur le développement de la plasticité.Nous étudions ensuite la capacité du modèle numérique pour modéliser une modification de la plasticité à l'échelle intragranulaire: des hétérogénéités sont introduites au sein d'un modèle de grain et l'impact sur la distribution de la déformation plastique résultante est analysée. / The modification of plasticity observed in hydrogen-charged metalic polycristals has been studied using numerical modeling (Finite Element Method). This effect has been quantified by a previous study using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), by measuring the slip steps forming at the surface of (hydrogen-)charged or uncharged 316L polycristals. However the heterogeneity of the strain field in a polycristal makes it difficult to compare precisely the results from different grains and aggregates.After analyzing the impact of the geometrical modelling on the numerical results, this present study porposes a method using numerical simulations (Crystal Plasticity model) to access the local plastic strain field at grain scale, and improve the analysis of the AFM results. The projections of the slip step "real" dimensions into AFM measures (heights and spacings) are taken into consideration in order to convert AFM data into data that are directly linked to plastic activity: the average number of dislocations and slip step spacing. This quantities make it possible to compare the experimental plastic behaviours of the differents agregates in order to quantify the impact of the hydrogen absorption.The capacity of the crystal plasticity model to simulate plasticity modification at intragranulare scale is then studied by implementing material heterogeneities within a grain model, and the resulting modification of the slip developpement within the grain is then analyzed.

Sauts quantiques de phase dans des chaînes de jonctions Josephson / Quantum phase-slips in Josephson junction chains

Nous avons étudié la dynamique des sauts quantiques de phase (quantum phase-slips) dans différents types de chaînes de jonctions Josephson. Les sauts de phase sont contrôlés par le rapport entre l'énergie Josephson et l'énergie de charge de chaque jonction. Nous avons mesuré l'effet des sauts de phase sur l'état fondamental de la chaîne et nous avons observé l'interférence quantique de sauts de phase (effet Aharonov-Casher). Les résultats de nos mesures sont en très bon accord avec les prédictions théoriques. Nous avons montré qu'une chaîne de jonctions Josephson polarisée en phase, présente un comportement collectif, similaire à un objet macroscopique. Les résultats de cette thèse ouvrent la voie pour la conception de nouveaux circuits Josephson, comme par exemple un qubit topologiquement protégé ou un dispositif quantique pour la conversion courant-fréquence. / In this thesis we presented detailed measurements of quantum phase-slips in Josephson junction chains. The measured phase-slips are the result of fluctuations induced by the finite charging energy of each junction. Our experimental results can be fitted in very good agreement by considering a simple tight-binding model for QPS. We have shown that under phase-bias, a chain of Josephson junctions or rhombi can behave in a collective way very similar to a single macroscopic quantum object. These results open the way for possible use of quantum phase-slips for the design of novel Josephson junction circuits, such as topologically protected rhombi qubits or current-to-frequency conversion devices.

Dynamique de chaînes de polymère greffés et glissement aux interfaces / Dynamics of grafted polymer chains and slip at solid-fluid interfaces

Dans de nombreux cas, le développement de surfaces aux propriétés adhésives spécifiques fait appel à l’utilisation « d’interfaces décorées ». Ces interfaces sont composées d’un substrat solide sur lequel des chaînes de polymère sont plus ou moins bien ancrées. Ces chaînes se couplent mécaniquement au matériau environnant et contrôlent la transmission des contraintes de friction et d'adhésion aux interfaces. Ce couplage dépend en particulier de la pénétration des chaînes de surface dans la matrice et de leur dynamique. Dans cette thèse, les systèmes que nous avons étudiés sont constitués d’une couche de chaînes de polymère dont une extrémité est liée de manière covalente à un substrat solide. Ces brosses de polymère, constituent un système modèle pour des interfaces décorées. Notre objectif a été d’étudier la conformation et la dynamique de ces chaînes greffées lorsque ces dernières sont soumises à différents types de sollicitations afin de comprendre les mécanismes moléculaires régissant les propriétés d’adhésion et de friction de ce type d’interface. Dans un premier volet, nous avons étudié par réflectivité de neutrons la cinétique de cicatrisation d'une interface composée initialement de chaînes greffées recroquevillées sur un substrat et en contact avec un fondu. Lorsque le système est amené à une température supérieure à la température de transition vitreuse, les chaînes de polymère retrouvent une mobilité non nulle permettant ainsi la pénétration des chaînes greffées dans le fondu de polymère. La réflectivité de neutrons nous a permis d'une part de sonder à l'échelle moléculaire la cinétique de cicatrisation de ce type d’interface et d'autre part de la quantifier. L'influence des paramètres moléculaires sur cette cinétique de cicatrisation a pu être observée, ce qui nous a permis de proposer un modèle en loi d'échelle permettant d'apporter une interprétation physique au phénomène étudié. La deuxième partie de ce travail de thèse a consisté en l'élaboration d'un dispositif expérimental permettant de cisailler un système brosse/fondu au-dessus de la température de la température transition vitreuse et de geler la conformation des chaînes greffées dans leur configuration cisaillée. L'inversion des spectres de réflectivité neutrons associés a permis de mettre en évidence l'influence du cisaillement sur le degré d'interpénétration entre la brosse et le fondu qui régit la transmission des contraintes de friction sur ce type d'interface. De plus, nous avons pu mesurer la cinétique de relaxation de chaînes greffées, cisaillées au préalable, et la comparer aux expériences d’interdigitation simple. Cette comparaison a permis de divulguer l’importance du type de sollicitation sur la cinétique de relaxation d’une interface brosse / fondu.Nous avons également observé que la cinétique de relaxation et la conformation de chaînes greffées peuvent être altérées lorsque ces dernières sont confinées dans un film d'épaisseur comparable au rayon de giration des chaînes. Une étude systématique par réflectivité de neutrons a permis de mettre en évidence une accélération de la cinétique de relaxation du système en dessous d'une épaisseur critique qui pourrait être interprétée en termes de déplacement de la température de transition vitreuse. Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons étudié le glissement de solutions de polymères sur une surface greffée. La fraction volumique en chaînes libres dans la solution est un paramètre supplémentaire aux trois cas précédents qui contrôle ici le degré d'interpénétration entre chaînes libres et chaînes greffées. Une première approche théorique a permis de dissocier différents régimes de glissements à la paroi en fonction de fraction volumique. Nous avons entrepris une première série d'expériences de vélocimétrie laser après photolyse afin de mesurer le glissement à la paroi de solutions de polymère et de confronter les résultats expérimentaux avec notre approche théorique. / In many cases, the development of surfaces with specific adhesive properties involves the use of "decorated interfaces." These interfaces consist of a solid substrate on which polymer chains are more or less well anchored. These chains are mechanically coupled to the surrounding material and control the transmission of friction and adhesion stresses at the interfaces. This coupling depends particularly on the penetration of the surface chains within the matrix and on their own dynamics. In this thesis, the systems we investigated are composed of a layer of polymer chains whose end is covalently linked to a solid substrate. These, so called, polymer brushes, provide a model system for decorated interfaces. Our objective was to study the conformation and dynamics of these grafted chains when they are subjected to different types of stress in order to understand the molecular mechanisms governing the adhesion and friction properties of this type of interface.In the first part, we investigated the healing kinetics of an interface composed initially of grafted chains collapsed on a substrate and in contact with a molten by using neutron reflectivity. When the system is brought above the glass transition temperature, the polymer chains mobility is high enough to allow the penetration of the grafted chains within the polymer melt. Neutrons reflectivity allowed us to probe at the molecular scale and to quantify the healing kinetics of this type of interface. The influence of molecular parameters on this healing kinetics was observed, which allowed us to propose a scaling law model to give a physical interpretation to the phenomenon studied.The second part of this thesis consisted in the development of an experimental setup which is able to shear a brush / melt interface above the glass transition temperature and to freeze the conformation of chains grafted in their sheared conformation. The inversion of the associated neutron reflectivity spectra made it possible to demonstrate the influence of shear on the degree of interpenetration between the brush and the melt which governs the transmission of stresses. In addition, we measured the kinetics of relaxation of grafted chains previously sheared and we compared it to the interdigitation experiments. This comparison highlighted the influence of the kind of solicitation on the relaxation kinetics of a brush/melt interface.We also observed that the relaxation kinetics and the conformation of the grafted chains may be altered when they are confined in a film which thickness is comparable to the radius of gyration of the chains. A systematic study using neutron reflectivity was conducted and highlighted an acceleration of the relaxation kinetics of the system below a critical thickness which could be interpreted in terms of a shift in the glass transition temperature.Secondly, we studied the slip of polymer solutions onto a grafted surface. The volume fraction of free chains in solution is an additional parameter which controls the degree of interpenetration between free chains and grafted chains. A first theoretical approach showed that different slip regimes can occur as a function of volume fraction. We have undertaken a first series of experiments using laser velocimetry after photobleaching to measure the surface velocity of flowing polymer solutions and to compare the experimental results to our theoretical approach.

Le gisement de Tocantinzinho est situé sur la province aurifère de Tapajós et est le plus grand gisement d'or de la province, avec 53,9 tonnes d'or estimées. Sa formation commence par un magmatisme granodioritique autour de 2005 Ma, suivi d'un magmatisme granitique. Le granite Tocantinzinho est composé de deux faciès principaux (syenogranite - 1996± 2Ma; monzogranite 1989±1 Ma), des corps d’aplite et de pegmatite, qui suggère un magmatisme enrichie en fluide et mis en place à faible profondeur. Intrusifs dans ces roches, des dykes d'andésite (1998±8Ma) ont des fragments de granite et des mélanges entre les 2 magmas suggèrent un magmatisme à la fois continu et polyphasé. Il est proposé que les premiers dykes d’andésite se sont mis en place alors que le granite n’était pas entièrement cristallisé (mingling) et les derniers lors des stades de déformation à l’état solide du granite. Utilisant la courbe de refroidissement, un âge minimum de 1975 Ma a été estimé pour l’andésite. Les taux de refroidissement des roches plutoniques varient de 3,6 à 14,7°C/Ma, avec une moyenne de 7,5°C/Ma, suggérant que les processus d'exhumation verticale sont faibles. La géométrie allongée du granite ainsi que la tectonique syn-magmatique de l'andésite corroborent la prédominance des mouvements horizontaux. L’affinité calc-alcaline fortement potassique et des anomalies en niobium définissent deux configurations possibles pour le cadre géotectonique: arc continental de type Andin ou Post-collisionnel. Compte tenue la relation génétique entre magmatisme, cisaillement décrochant et les faibles taux de refroidissement, l’environnement post-collisionnel est plus probable. Cela ensemble avec les âges nous permettent de comparer ces roches avec celles de la Suite Intrusive Creporizão (1997-1957Ma). La dacite (1992 ± 2 Ma) recoupe les autres roches, cependant, la signature géochimique comparable aux roches anorogéniques suggère qu’elle appartient à une série magmatique distinct. La zone minéralisée est limitée par deux failles majeures senestres de direction N100°-130E°. Le granite Tocantinzinho et les roches hypo-volcaniques déformées sont dans ce couloir, altérées par de fluides hydrothermaux et minéralisées pendant deux phases tectoniques distinctes. La première est caractérisée par des brèches et des microfractures remplies par muscovite (1864±5Ma) et pyrite, associées à de faibles teneur d’or (<1,5ppm) restreintes au granite. La deuxième phase a été contrôlée par le cisaillement décrochant senestre normal générant des fentes de tension et des brèches remplies par quartz, chlorite, calcite, albite, rutile, pyrite, galène, sphalérite, chalcopyrite et or. La teneur en or peut atteindre jusqu'à 70 ppm dans les veines riches en sulfures. Ces structures de remplissage syntectonique sont parallèles entre elles et orientées N30-60°E. Deux hypothèses ont été proposées pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: la première considère une relation génétique entre magmatisme et minéralisation au moins pour le premier stage de minéralisation selon un modèle porphyrique et la seconde alternative considère une réactivation des failles préexistantes par une tectonique transtensive liée au magmatisme Maloquinha (ca. 1880Ma) pour les deux stades minéralisateurs. Les deux phases dans les deux hypothèses, ont été classées comme des minéralisations de type magmato-hydrothermale qui pourraient être classées soit comme des systèmes d'or liés à l'intrusion. De nouveaux travaux sur le terrain et en laboratoire seraient nécessaires pour identifier et caractériser la nature et la source des fluides hydrothermaux, pour dater la minéralisation et mieux comprendre le rôle des roches hypo-volcaniques. Toutefois, les premiers résultats, et notamment le rôle fondamental du contrôle tectonique pour la minéralisation sont très significatifs et peuvent aider de manière conséquente à l'établissement des programmes d'exploration et d'exploitation futurs. / The Tocantinzinho deposit is located on the Tapajós Gold Province and is the largest gold deposit within Province, with 53,9 tons of gold. Its formation begins with a granodioritic magmatism around 2005Ma, followed by a granitic magmatism 10 Ma latter. The Tocantinzinho granite is composed by two main facies, syenogranite (1996±2Ma) and monzogranite (1989±1Ma), and by aplite and pegmatite bodies, suggesting a fluid-rich magmatism at shallow depth. Andesite dikes (1998±8Ma) are intrusive in both rocks. Sharp fragments of those rocks along contacts and minor mingling with granitic magma suggest a multiphase magmatism at distinct timing. The first dikes have intruded within granite when it was crystalizing, thus a minimum age of 1975Ma was estimated. Cooling rates of plutonic rocks vary from 3.6 to 14.7°C/Ma, with an average of 7.5°C/Ma, suggesting vertical exhumation processes were minor. The elongated geometry of granite along with sin-magmatic strike-slip tectonics of andesite corroborate the predominance of horizontal movements. Geochemical analysis show high-K calk-alkaline affinity and niobium anomaly indicator of two possible geotectonic settings for these rocks: Andean-type continental arc or post-collisional one. Considering the genetic relationship between magmatism, strike-slip faults, and low cooling rates, a post-collisional setting is more likely. The geochemical signature, ages and style of tectonism allow us to compare those rocks with the ones from Creporizão Intrusive Suite (1997-1957Ma). Dacite dikes (1992±2Ma) cut across all other rocks, but the temporal relationship among them remains misunderstood, due to the geochemical signature similar to the anorogenic rocks, suggesting it belongs to a distinct and latter magmatic series. Indeed, the dated zircons were probably inherited from host rocks. The mineralized area is restricted to a domain constrained by two major sinistral strike-slip N100°-130E°E faults that comprises the Tocantinzinho granite and sub-volcanic rocks, which were hydrothermally altered, brittle deformed and mineralized during two phases. The first one is characterized by breccias and microfractures infilled with muscovite (1864±5Ma) and pyrite, which contains low gold grades and are restricted to the Tocantinzinho granite. The second phase was controlled by strike-slip and normal tectonics generating tension gashes veins and pull apart breccias infilled with quartz, chlorite, calcite, albite, rutile, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, and gold. The gold grade can reach up to 70 ppm in some sulfide-rich veins. These structures are parallel and mainly trends N30-60°E, showing textures and orientated minerals typical of syn-tectonic infilling. Based on petrographical features and argon ages two hypothesis were proposed for the ore genesis: the first one consider a genetic relationship between magmatism and ore fluids for first mineralization stage and the second hypothesis consider a reactivation of pre-existing faults by an extensional tectonism related to the Maloquinha Intrusive Suite magmatism (ca.1880Ma) for this phase. The second mineralization phase is considered as formed as consequence of tectonic reactivation at ca. 1880Ma, in both hypothesis. Both phases in both hypothesis were classified as magmatic-hydrothermal ore mineralization and might be classified as intrusion-related gold systems. However, new field works are important in order to identify and characterize the nature and source of hydrothermal fluids, as well as ore dating and new geochemical and geochronological data of sub-volcanic rocks are imperative to better understand the genesis and evolution of the Tocantinzinho gold deposit. Such results, strongly linked to the fact that the tectonic control seem significant, may help for future exploration and exploitation programs.

The effect of microstructure on the performance of nickel based alloys for use in oil and gas applications

This research focused on a comprehensive microstructural and mechanical property characterisation study of the Ni-Fe-Cr alloys 718 and 945X. The aim of the project was to better understand the relationship between performance and microstructure of existing (Alloy 718) and newly developed (Alloy 945X) high strength nickel alloys focusing on downhole applications. The main difference between the two alloys is that alloy 945X has lower Nb content than alloy 718, which may minimise the tendency to form delta when combined with correct processing. Previous studies have related the hydrogen embrittlement in alloy 718 with the collection of hydrogen by delta phase. Microstructural characterisation of the new alloy 945X after long term isothermal exposure up to 120 hours in the temperature range 650◦C to 900◦C was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to generate a time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagram. The TTT diagram was used as a road map for designing two isothermal heat treatments of alloy 945X on tensile specimens. Then, the effect of hydrogen charging on the tensile properties and microstructure of the 'as-received' and these two variant heat treatments was investigated. Fractographic analysis showed that, in the presence of hydrogen, intergranular fracture occurred for all the heat treatments, regardless the presence of delta phase at grain boundaries. There was no simple correlation between the volume fraction of delta-phase and susceptibility to hydrogen assisted embrittlement. Rather, it was demonstrated that the morphology and distribution of delta-phase along grain boundaries plays a key role and the other precipitate phases also have an influence through their effect on the ease of strain localisation. This study also examined the hydrogen embrittlement sensitivity of nickel alloy 718 given four different heat treatments to obtain various microstructural states. Each heat treatment leads to differences in the precipitate morphologies of γ', γ'' and delta phases. Material characterisation and fractography of the examined heat treatments were performed using a high resolution FEG-SEM. Three specimens of each condition were pre- charged with hydrogen and tensile properties were compared with those of non-charged specimens. It was observed that hydrogen embrittlement was associated with intergranular and transgranular microcrack formation, leading to an intergranular brittle fracture. delta phase may assist the intergranular crack propagation, and this was shown to be particularly true when this phase is coarse enough to produce crack initia- tion, but this is not the only factor determining embrittlement. Other microstructural features play a role, as does the strength of the material. Finally, the evolution of delta-(Ni3Nb) phase in alloy 718 from the early stages of precipitation, with a particular focus on identifying the grain boundary characteristics that favour precipitation of grain boundary delta phase was investigated. Results showed that delta phase was firstly formed on Σ3 boundaries after 5 hours at the examined temperature (800◦C). Increasing ageing time at 800◦C was observed to lead to an increase in size and precipitation of phases γ'-γ''-delta, an increase in fraction of the special CSL boundaries and an evolution in the morphology of twins and the growth of grains.
