Conflicting perceptions of bullying : an investigative study of parents, teachers and pupils' understanding of bullying behaviour.

Cowlin, Justin Lee January 2010 (has links)
Bullying is a common phenomenon among all social groups, whether that be within the school, at work or among other social spheres. It can have serious consequences for the target and can arise in many visible and not so visible forms. Within the school environment bullying often occurs out of sight and undetected. If schools are to effectively overcome the negative effects of this complex social behaviour teachers, pupils and their parents need to take steps to develop and unify their perception of this common form of abuse in schools. Thus the aim of this essay was to examine teachers, pupils and parents’ perceptions of bullying behaviours in correlation with researchers understanding of this complex social behaviour. A quantitative approach was used in this essay to investigate upper-secondary school teachers, pupils and parents’ perception of the term bullying? Having gathered the results of the empirical data, many of the extracts from the subjects open responses could be categorised, and have been for the purpose of analysis under the appropriate headings pertaining physical and psychological forms of bullying behaviour. The results of this research illustrated a diverse and on occasion inadequate understanding of bullying behaviours among the respondents, despite the implementation of an anti-bullying programme (Likabehandlingsplan), required by Swedish law. Furthermore, many respondents illustrated the tendency to define bullying behaviour solely from the actions of the perpetrator. Are then the schools included within the scope of this essay at fault and failing to inform respondents of the complexity of bullying behaviour? Schools need to listen carefully to what adolescents are reporting as well as help teachers, pupils and parents develop a more inclusive, objective and balanced definition of bullying behaviours. This will not only have a positive effect for the individual (target) but may also help in identifying, reporting and combating incidents of direct and indirect forms of abuse, regardless of how insignificant one first perceives the act of bullying to be.

Encouraging social interaction in public spaces through interactive light

Antic, Dusan January 2019 (has links)
Interactive light systems create unique opportunities for different kinds of social interactions in public places. This thesis explores movement as the main interaction to discover and create new ways of engaging in social interaction as well as to encourage people of different age groups to come together and participate. To further explore and answer the questions in mind, different field studies such as interviews and user tests were implemented to gather information on how the pedestrian’s thoughts and actions were. The outcome of these field studies showed that there is a slight shyness in the Swedish people and that they need to be encouraged to start socially interacting. Which through the presented prototype and its mechanics worked and allowed the participants to express their thoughts and feelings regarding an interactive light system that could encourage social interaction in public spaces.

Eco Kids - Developing a learning game for children with the aspects of user-centered design, social behavior and reward systems

Runesvall, Jonna, Sahlström Gren, Kajsa, Truncale, Lenna January 2010 (has links)
This paper focuses on how to design a childrens game to help them realize that they can have a positive influence on the environment. We present a detailed description and analysis of our work process from brainstorming to the discussions after playtesting our prototype. Playing while learning has been the motivation of our work which is divided into three specific topics: How to involve the users in the design process, what type of social aspects exist in our game, and the importance of a feedback and reward system in the game. We look upon earlier research and examples within these three areas. We designed our game from a user centered perspective to make the users influence and encourage a discussion and awareness about environmental questions in a way that isnʼt negative. While designing our game we wanted to shed a positive light upon a serious issue and bring the environment into the topics of play and fun. In our research we discoverd that focusing on small subjects and tasks the children started to discuss the complex theme of the environment. We focus on the interaction with the children and using their influence to make decisions in our design process. Involving them helped us to see that there is not only one way of learning. In this game, the users learned from engagement and discussion, which ended up being the most important part of the game play.

: science of manners and social behaviours and fiction of self in Story of my life

Denieul, Séverine 20 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis surveys the connexion between three formes of knowledge: of self, of others and of the world in Casanova's Histoire de ma vie. Often regarded as a great “picture of manners” of 18th century society, its historical, sociological and philosophical dimensions have been slightly appraised, though. Nevertheless, his autobiographical work stands as an remarkable moment in the history of litterature, and in the same time merits a place of his own, for the Venitian is neither a moralist in the classical sense of the word, nor a theorist of manners such as Voltaire. However, he is maybe more gifted than these two models to give account of the complexity of real, thanks to a “science of manners” (as it had been theorized, for instance, by Charles Duclos in his Considérations sur les moeurs de ce siècle) that he implements not only in himself, but also in his fellow men. Nevertheless, Casanova remains unclear about his intentions: should we take seriously this “moral teacher” who wishes to offer his readers a “magical mirror” so they would gaze at -and eventually even correct- themselves? It is worth considering how this ethos of the teacher arises in the philosophical writings of Casanova (most of all, the Essai de critique sur les sciences, sur les moeurs et sur les arts) and in what degree this construction of self can be applied to Histoire de ma vie. This leads us to a third level of analysis: the connexion existing between the fictions of self used by Casanova (first of all, models out of novels) to give account of reality in his Mémoires and his theorisation of his own life.

La méthode de l’observation directe dans l’étude des interactions sociales entre personnes âgées vivant avec une démence en institution / Impact of a psychosocial intervention and its frequency on the well being and on the quality of life of institutionalized elderly with Alzheimer's disease

Mabire, Jean-Bernard 03 December 2015 (has links)
We have little information about the nature of social interactions of people with dementia living in nursing homes and about effectiveness of psychosocial intervention on social interactions. We know that social interactions promote a good quality of life and a good cognitive functioning. 56 residents with dementia living in a nursing home were observed by video to analyse their social behaviours and to validate an observation grid of social interactions, the Social Observation Residents Index (SOBRI). 36 residents received a session of psychosocial stimulation. Their scores on the SOBRI were compared to those of a control group. The validation of the SOBRI highlighted two profiles of behaviours: social interactions with other residents and with care staff. One session of psychosocial stimulation promotes significantly social interactions with care staff. Positives trends are observed in both groups in terms of increase of social interactions with other residents. Residents with dementia interact spontaneously with other residents and with care staff. Psychosocial stimulation promotes social interactions with care staff. A stimulation, regardless its intensity, seems to stimulate social interactions between residents. Future studies are needed to confirm these trends and to develop programs promoting social inclusion in nursing homes.
