Expansion and Validation of the Political Skill Inventory (PSI): An Examination of the Link Between Charisma, Political Skill, and PerformanceCoole, David R 28 February 2007 (has links)
The present research was developed to reexamine the factor structure of the Political Skill Inventory (PSI), expand upon the political skill behavioral taxonomy to include charisma, and provide validity evidence for both the PSI and our new measure of charisma. In study one, using a large undergraduate student sample, confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for a three factor structure of political skill. Charisma and networking ability were identified as unique factors of the political skill construct domain while PSI dimensions of social astuteness, interpersonal influence, and apparent sincerity collapsed to form a single dimension. Study One results also indicated a strong positive relationship between self-reports of political skill, charisma, and OCB.
In Study Two, using a sample of public-sector triads consisting of professional level employees, their coworkers and their supervisors, mixed support was found for the convergent and divergent validity of the four PSI dimensions and charisma across reporting sources. As hypothesized, political skill predicted supervisor reports of overall job performance, task performance, and OCB. Charisma contributed to the prediction of supervisor ratings of overall performance and task performance after controlling for PSI total scores. At the dimensional level, social astuteness and charisma demonstrated the strongest predictive validity across all study criteria. Social astuteness and charisma also demonstrated a significant interaction when predicting supervisor ratings of overall performance and task performance. This interaction indicated that social astuteness plays more of a role in predicting job performance for employees low in charisma than for employees high in charisma. As an addition to the second study, the ability of the PSI and charisma to predict performance ratings was compared against an abridged version of a situational judgment test assessing practical intelligence, the Tacit Knowledge Inventory for Managers (TKIM; Wagner and Sternberg, 1991). After controlling for PSI total scores and charisma, the TKIM provided a modest contribution to the prediction of supervisor ratings of overall performance. Implications of these findings and directions for future research are provided.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Fundamental social right of second dimension, leisure is born in order to require to the State an action not only for their protection but also for enforcement. Thus, it is seen that the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988 cites leisure at three different time, one of them in the Title II Rights and Fundamental Guarantees. Much was the doctrinal controversy as possible the effect of immediate applicability, prevailing currently the position that Article 5, §3º of the Basic Charter 1988 focuses on all of Title II, including the fundamental right to leisure. However, despite the immediate applicability guaranteed by the Federal Constitution, it was realized that leisure does not have the full effect, that is not able to generate all the effects necessary for their implementation and protection. This is because, although provided for in planning both at the constitutional level as infrastructure, leisure has only one aspect of such effectiveness, that is the legal. Therefore, it is missing the social effectiveness of leisure corresponding to their effectiveness, ability to produce effects in the social environment in order to reach the community and its traditions. It was also found that it is due to the lack of effectiveness the right to leisure is infringed and that the community is not able to define it or value it. Faced with this problem, we sought the solution by Georg Jelinek´s idea that leisure represents a positive fundamental right that require to the State an positive action. Therefore, based on the basilar super principle of democratic rule, the Dignity of the Human Person, and on the Principles of forbiddance to recession and of Social Progressivity, the implementation of Public Policies of State are mechanism of effective social fundamental right to leisure in order to raise awareness, implement and inform the community of the institute, and protect it from the offenses committed by individuals and even by the State. The work aims to discuss the implications brought to leisure due to its forecast in the legal system as a fundamental right , formulate a concept that embraces its interdisciplinarity, prove their importance to the dignity life of the individual and demonstrate public policies to be adopted the Legislative, Judiciary and Executive , and some subsidiary bodies of Justice, to ensure its effectiveness.

Facilitating Communication and Effective Interpersonal Relationships at Work: A Theoretical Model of Socio-Affective CompetenceBandelli, Adam C 02 May 2008 (has links)
The research reported here provides an introduction to a theoretical model of socio-affective competence. This conceptual model of social effectiveness consists of four competencies that are related to the development of effective interpersonal relationships in the workplace. These competencies include: establishing rapport, promoting acceptance of differences, developing trust and cultivating charismatic influence. The socio-affective competence model was formulated in an attempt to integrate research on social and emotional skills that have been linked to performance in organizations. The current research proposed the model and defined its competency areas, designed a socio-affective competence situational judgment test (SAC-SJT), identified the variables that were theoretically related and unrelated to the construct, and provided initial evidence in support of the criterion-related validity of the socio-affective competence framework. Results from two different studies established the foundation of the socio-affective competence nomological network and demonstrated the predictive validity of the SAC-SJT on job performance, relational behaviors, and organizational citizenship performance. The author discusses the benefits of developing interpersonal relationship skills and the relevance of these findings in organizational settings.
