The internationalization of social enterprises : Mapping patterns in the internationalization process of social entrepreneurs

Färdig, Kristina, Håkansson, Maria January 2014 (has links)
Social entrepreneurship, defined as entrepreneurial activities with a clear mission to create social value, is gaining increased influence and importance in the economy. Through combining a for-profit mindset with social objectives, social enterprises provide groundbreaking solutions to societal needs. The global presence and impact of social enterprises raise the importance of internationalization of this specific kind of enterprise. This is an area of inquiry that has gained limited attention in academia and empirical studies have been few. The purpose of the study is to investigate motives for internationalization of social enterprises and how these enterprises establish in foreign markets. The study consists of an empirical investigation based on a survey sample of 65 respondents and one background interview. The result shows that the main motive for internationalization of social enterprises is to alleviate social problems. Social enterprises have a distinct international character, show patterns of early and rapid internationalization and can be characterized as international new ventures with a distinct social mission. Networks affect motives as well as choice of entry mode of social enterprises. The most common mode of entry of social enterprises is to establish alliances or partnerships with foreign actors and the main target market is less developed economies.

Innovations in outsourcing : the emergence of impact sourcing

Sandeep, M. S. January 2015 (has links)
Newly emerging information technology and business process outsourcing (IT-BPO) models are not just about business . Some of these models are also guided by a strong underlying social mission to do good and create social value . Collectively they are now being referred to as impact sourcing (ImS) models. In brief, ImS is a social innovation in outsourcing that aims to bring digitally-enabled outsourcing jobs to marginalized individuals. The ImS model of outsourcing consciously provides employment opportunities to communities and groups whose life chances are deemed poor. In this thesis we study ImS companies, i.e., IT-BPO vendor firms, which aim to create a significant impact (hence the term impact sourcing ) on the lives of hitherto disadvantaged and deprived communities by giving them gainful employment and thereby improving their material conditions. Using qualitative methods, the thesis takes multiple approaches to study the ImS model. The thesis is comprised of three empirical chapters, each exploring a different aspect of the ImS model. Chapter 2, using a multiple case-study approach, draws on concepts from social entrepreneurship to study the triggers of ImS entrepreneurship and the process through which ImS entrepreneurs build and operate ImS companies. The chapter also looks into the institutional influences that have shaped the ImS model. Most importantly, the findings demonstrate the inherent difficulty of scaling and sustaining the ImS model, as it is the individual entrepreneurs intense personal experiences, not market-based considerations, which play a crucial role in launching new ImS companies. Drawing on the initial findings of Chapter 2, Chapter 3 explores the challenges of operating ImS companies in marginalized communities. Specifically, the chapter analyzes how ImS companies frame their ventures to the local community, drawing on frame alignment literature. The findings from this chapter suggest that local communities are not passive recipients of ImS companies framing work and may indeed resist ImS company activities for reasons such as the perceived incompatibility of the ImS model with local norms and belief systems and perceptions of inequality stemming from the merit-based recruitment strategies underpinning the model. The chapter finds that deployment of progress, family, material-benefit and egalitarianism frames may help ImS companies to overcome resistance, and gain the acceptance of local communities. While Chapters 2 and 3 focus on the ImS companies and their founders, Chapter 4 analyzes the challenges faced by marginalized individuals as they transition into the ImS workplace from their relatively traditional community spaces. The findings suggest that the distinct norms and values embodied in the community space and the ImS workplace create challenges for ImS employees. In response to these challenges, the findings show that ImS employees craft a variety of coping strategies such as integration and compartmentalization to manage work and non-work boundaries. ImS employees were also found to create fictive kinships, experiment with provisional selves and craft jobs to cope with the socioculturally alien environment of ImS workplaces. Overall, the thesis makes theoretical and practical contributions to the small but growing business and management literature on the ImS phenomenon. The thesis also makes theoretical contributions to the literatures on social entrepreneurship, frame alignment and organizational studies.

Social Banking / Sociální bankovnictví

Pospíchal, Tomáš January 2010 (has links)
My diploma thesis is about social entrepreneurship in the banking sector. The thesis has two parts - theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part I examine the social entrepreneurship in general, i.e meaning of altruism in entrepreneurship. The ambit of my interest is interesting also because for-profit and non-for-profit organizations operate or operated on the same market. The practical part contains several case studies of "social banking" institutions. Concretely, I chose charitable banks in Italy and Spain emerging in 15th century, furthermore kampeličky and Raiffeisen cooperatives, microcredit and P-to-P lending. I try to answer the question whether the "social banking" is a meaningful concept and whether we can find in history some development leading to the current form of microcredit.

The effect of motivations for ecological responsiveness (ER) on intrapreneurship in South Africa

Christos, Cayley January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Management in Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation Johannesburg, 2017 / This research report is based on the motivations for ecological responsiveness as identified by Bansal and Roth (2000). It considers the resultant actions of different motivations for ecological responsiveness (ER), and their ability to moderate the relationship between ER and Intrapreneurship in South Africa. The study adopted a deductive positivist paradigm that assumed an ecocentric approach to management and organisational research. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design was employed and the use of both primary data collection from surveys and secondary data collection from websites and annual reports were utilised in order to determine the existence of relationships between the variables of ecological responsiveness and intrapreneurship, and the moderating variables of legitimation, competitiveness and ecological responsibility. Multiple regression analysis was used to statistically test the relationship between the independent variable of ecological responsiveness and the dependent variable of intrapreneurship, as well as the moderating effect of the variables listed above. The population of this study was employees with management/supervisory positions within financial institutions of South Africa. It was required that these organisations were listed and had accessible or publically available annual reports in order for content analysis to be conducted. The final sample consisted of 210 management level employees who were in the majority employed at 3 different large, listed, South African banks. This study found support for hypothesized relationships between ecological responsiveness and intrapreneurship, as well as the positive moderating effect of the motive of ecological responsibility on this relationship. Results pertaining to the moderating effect of legitimation and competitive motives were not supported. In addition, the study found support for the proposed relationship between an organisations ecological qualitative content analysis (QCA) score and the level of ecological responsibility perception in the organisation. The general findings contribute to research in the field of motivations for environmental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) and the resulting actions. / MT2017

Social impact of entrepreneurial immigrants on Florida’s gold coast

Unknown Date (has links)
At the dawn of a new presidential election, we are reminded that what separates the United States from the rest of the world are the immigrants who came here in the pursuit of the American Dream. These immigrants do not just come to the United States as workers, but also as consumers and entrepreneurs who contribute to the American economy, and use the profits created by their successful entrepreneurship(s) in a way that they become catalysts of change. None of the studies have managed to track the qualities and perceptions of these entrepreneurial immigrants turned philanthropists since the 1940’s. By focusing on their life experiences using an instrumental case study approach, we start to form the profile of the modern day immigrant entrepreneur and philanthropist by analyzing them through five lenses: immigration, adult education, entrepreneurship, leadership, and philanthropy. Using these five lenses, we can better understand the optative aspects of entrepreneurial immigrantship as a part of social impact on Florida’s Gold Coast. Their core family values of tithing and lending a helping hand to those in need transfer into social activism in terms of donations of wealth and donations of time. Although they do not consider themselves leaders in the communities they live and work in, the research findings are quite the opposite. They are socially involved through memberships and leadership positions on local, national, and international non- profit boards, they spearhead major fundraising events and initiatives, and they establish private or corporate foundations and even support candidates seeking political office, whether here or abroad. In essence, they became philanthropists and community activists, who by virtue of immigrating and opening their businesses here add value to Florida’s Gold Coast. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Investidores e empreendedores sociais: uma análise sobre as competências dos empreendedores de negócios com impacto socioambiental / Social Investors and entrepreneurs: an analysis about the competencies of entrepreneurs of social businesses.

Matos, Halina Valdivia de 09 November 2018 (has links)
The recent emergence of social businesses, which aims at generating positive results from a social and/or environmental perspective, has fostered the academic debate in the social entrepreneurship field. Concurrently, new ways of financially enabling these businesses have emerged, boosting the growth of impact investing. Hence, a new ecosystem arises, composed by agents that play complementary roles in promoting, supporting and monitoring of social impact businesses. Despite the significant scientific progress on this phenomenon, there is a gap concerning the set of competencies that composes the profile of social entrepreneurs leading these enterprises. Thus, a qualitative research of both descriptive and explanatory nature was designed with the intent of raising, along with investors of social businesses, their expectation regarding the profile of these entrepreneurs. From the literature review done for this study, eighteen organizations were identified as impact investors, of which fifteen accepted the request to contribute with individual and semi-structured interviews. As a result, the most spontaneously cited competencies among the interviewees were, in descending order: the development and maintenance of relationships; the administrative management; adaptability; the mapping of opportunities and tendencies; orientation towards learning and innovation; persuasion; and risk management. Nevertheless, the results of this research show that these competencies are not used as criteria to decide on the social investing. Some of the tools used to understand the profile of entrepreneurs, as a whole, are: individual surveys, on-site visits to observe the dynamic of the entrepreneur with his team and clients, and checking references with the entrepreneurs\' network members. Nearly half of the interviewees voluntarily cited the importance of impact investing to the growth and development of the businesses that received these investments, especially because they were offered both strategic and administrative contribution, not to mention the capital injection. In general, the interviewed investors have emphasized the intention to collaborate with the entrepreneurs, by creating a positive atmosphere in order to build a long term relationship. By comparing and analyzing the interviews, we identified that investors have a homogenous mindset regarding the profile of both social entrepreneurs and traditional entrepreneurs, as no major disparities were attributed among them. Their intention of coming to terms with both social and environmental matters is the only element in ten out of the fifteen interviewed entrepreneurs of social businesses. In this sense, this research contribution is related to the progress for both academic and pragmatic fields of social businesses in Brazil. This study enables identifying and describing the expected set of competencies of a social entrepreneur, from the investor\'s perspective. Similar examinations have not been identified so far, reinforcing the need for further research in this field.

O movimento do empreendedorismo social no Brasil sob a luz do prêmio empreendedor social / The social entrepreneurship movement in Brazil under the perspective of the social entrepreneur award

Aoqui, Cássio 20 February 2017 (has links)
Given the need to improve the understanding of social entrepreneurship within the scope of organizational theories, based on the frontier of knowledge in this field and on awards, the objective of this study was to describe, historize and analyze the emergence, implementation and development of Social Entrepreneur Award and how the changes it has undergone over more than a decade of existence (2005-2015) mirror the very movement of Brazilian social entrepreneurship. For this, from a relativist-constructivist ontological perspective, a process research was conducted with an intrinsic case study, inspired by the Gioia method and the contextualist approach, based on the historical and longitudinal analysis of 6,688 records (secondary data) of the initiative, carried out in the country by Folha de S.Paulo and the Schwab Foundation. The analysis of the case shows that the object of study presents a relationship of mutuality with the movement of Brazilian social entrepreneurship, sometimes fomenting it, revealing new references in the field, promoting intersectoral networks and alliances and propagating its concepts to a wider public broad; sometimes mirroring it, undergoing transformations to adapt to the dynamic context in which it is inserted. In this sense, it is noted that the very concept of social entrepreneur evolves from the archetype of the hero leader to a still open reflection of his real capacity to cause a systemic social transformation, more than a decade after the launch of the Prize, vis-à-vis the new entrepreneurial generations, who reinforce principles such as horizontality and hybridity. The laureates themselves reflect the origins and development of this field, from grassroots social movements that were institutionalized as NGOs in the 1980s to technology startups in education and inclusion leveraged by impact investment. The analysis of this evolution denotes an intrinsic relation with the contextual references of the field of social entrepreneurship in Brazil and in the world - the zeitgeist -, among them the strong orientation towards the search for innovation, of sustainability - demonstrated by the professionalism of the management and income generation of social ventures - and of the social impact generated, in a way proven by performance measurements. Externally, two crises are a decisive factor in the trajectory of the Prize in Brazil: the economic instability during this period, with a further reflection on the journalism sector in the country, and the crises of public image and reputation of organizations that affect the socio-environmental field, mirrored in the political-institutional spectrum. Lastly, in the framework of the partnership between the promoters, the results of this research point to an alliance that strengthened in the first three years and that, little by little, was fragmented by critical incidents that evidence an alliance that has never really become strategic. By way of conclusion, it is noticeable that, even though the award has an affect on the social entrepreneurship movement, having consolidating itself as a reference in the selection and promotion of social-environmental leaders in the country, it mostly mirrors and seeks for adaptation - and survival - to its mutant context, deeply attached to the initiatives undertaken by the team that organizes it, without a clear strategic and long-term direction from the perspective of its two promoters.

Empreendedorismo social e promoção do desenvolvimento local / Social entrepreneurship and local development promotion

Bose, Monica 01 February 2013 (has links)
The phenomenon of social entrepreneurship has gained visibility and relevance in the scope of academic production, and especially of contemporary organizational practices, as it presents another alternative for fighting poverty and social exclusion, and promoting sustainable development. Through the observation of three cases in the Sao Paulo Metropolitan Area, this thesis has sought to identify if and how such social enterprises have caused significant changes in the social development of the territories in which they operate. Relying on the design and vectors of inequality proposed by Amartya Sen (2000) for social development, the empirical survey has sought to identify the results obtained by social enterprises in three initiatives in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. The study has adopted a qualitative methodology in a contextualist approach (PETTIGREW, 1989; FISCHER, 2002), which seeks to characterize the circumstance in which some of the projects undertaken by the enterprises analyzed are inserted. Such initiatives were studied as fields in which manifold agents interact and influence by mobilizing the different types of capital each of them hold, as proposed by Bourdieu (2007). The collected data were analyzed as Roche\'s methodological proposition (2002), based on the identification of changes perceived by the target population of the projects. The multiple-case study was used as a research method, as typology proposed by Yin (2010). Data were collected from documents, interviews and observations, and were categorized according to the technique of content analysis, as proposed by Bardin (1977). The results of the research have indicated signs of improvement in the quality of personal and family life of the actors who participated in the initiatives undertaken by the social enterprises. Changes that affect the location or territory as a whole, setting an increment in the development patterns, are not seen in all cases and are usually concentrated in one or the other dimension of social development, such as improvements in the sphere of material riches or social wellbeing. The results achieved by the social enterprises surveyed have contributed little, until the time of the survey, in strengthening social and political capital in the communities involved, as well as in leveraging the economic and social development of the territory in which they operate. However, one must also consider the impacts caused by the short lifetime of the initiatives studied and by the innovative character, typical of such actions, on the results attained.

O movimento B Corp: significados, potencialidades e desafios / The Movement B Corp: meaning, Possibilities and callenges

Rodrigues, Juliana 26 October 2016 (has links)
Businesses and enterprises as key elements in the capitalist development model are actually being questioned about their actions in the resolution of society\'s problems and regarding their traditional focus on financial performance. New organizational models seek to produce articulations capable of creating a bond between profit and socio-environmental interest. Many authors cite the B Corp Movement as one of the main examples of the concept of hybrid organizations. It then becomes a rich object of study to understand the alternatives for reviewing organizational practices. One of its main mottos is \"to redefine the success in business\". The Movement operates in three main areas: certification, law and impact investment. This descriptive-exploratory and qualitative study, based on an interpretative-constructivist paradigm, aims to better understand the identity of the B Corp Movement according to the emerging concept of hybrid organizations, following other trends and definitions that seek to treat the socioenvironmental role of business. To answer the research questions - If and how B Corps are a model of organizational hybridity -, this research involved a multi-method approach of information collection, codification and analysis in a combination of two investigation phases. The first phase - A Portrait of the B Corp Movement - looked to comprehend the meanings from their actors\' perspective. The fieldwork consisted of 12 interviews with main stakeholders in Brazil and the United States, such as the movement representatives, leaders of certified B Corps and prospect enterprises. The second phase - A Portrait of Certified Companies - enabled to profile the Brazilian certified business through secondary data analysis. The sources for the analyzed material were the websites, made available on the internet by them, and their profiles on the global and regional website of the B Corp Community. From the results of this research, the certification can be perceived as an evolution of social and environmental accountability mechanisms, by including steps of information evidences, auditing, legal commitment and seal/certification identification. The inclusion of the interests of stakeholders in legal documents is one of the key differentiators and symbolic aspect of the movement. However, it is still not possible to say that they represent a new organizational model or an ideal type of hybrid organization, but rather a path on this intention. The studied group of enterprises comprises a larger scope on organizational hybridity levels, placing more emphasis the way businesses are conducted, but not necessarily their core business, main-activities or social mission as a guide for business model. It can be noticed the heterogeneity of certified companies as one of the main characteristics of the movement and, at the same time, one of their biggest challenges to be distinguished. The ideological positioning and impact investment attraction are the main motivating factors for a company to certify. Earning the seal is perceived as a way to ensure legitimacy for a socioenvironmental differential. The low awareness of B Corp as a brand and the lack practical benefits are among the main weaknesses, compensated by being part of a shared values community and the potential for network and partnerships. By providing a panoramic and analytical overview of the movement, this study serves as a starting point for future researches related to the subject and for the development of the concept of hybrid organizations.
