On the Sociability of a Game-Playing Agent: A Software Framework and Empirical Study

Behrooz, Morteza 10 April 2014 (has links)
The social element of playing games is what makes us play together to enjoy more than just what the game itself has to offer. There are millions of games with different rules and goals; They are played by people of many cultures and various ages. However, this social element remains as crucial. Nowadays, the role of social robots and virtual agents is rapidly expanding in daily activities and entertainment and one of these areas is games. Therefore, it seems desirable for an agent to be able to play games socially, as opposed to simply having the computer make the moves in game application. To achieve this goal, verbal and non-verbal communication should be inspired by the game events and human input, to create a human-like social experience. Moreover, a better social interaction can be created if the agent can change its game strategies in accordance with social criteria. To bring sociability to the gaming experience with many different robots, virtual agents and games, we have developed a generic software framework which generates social comments based on the gameplay semantics. We also conducted a user study, with this framework as a core component, involving the rummy card game and the checkers board game. In our analysis, we observed both subjective and objective measures of the effects of social gaze and comments in the gaming interactions. Participants' gaming experience proved to be significantly more social, human-like, enjoyable and adoptable when social behaviors were employed. Moreover, since facial expressions can be a strong indication of internal state, we measured the number of participants' smiles during the gameplay and observed them to smile significantly more when social behaviors were involved than when they were not.

Melz, Rodrigo Luís January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the interests manifested during the period from 2002 to 2005 by social actors interested in tobacco farming in the Rio Pardo Valley, Rio Grande do Sul, the region with the highest tobacco production in Brazil. This activity is developed by family farmers in an integrated production system that consists of contracts with industries, most of which are transnational. This qualitative study uses the work of Chilean author Carlos Matus and his Theory of Social Production as the main reference for analysis. The data collection was carried out mainly from news reports by the corporate press of the studied region between 2002 and 2005. This period includes the final negotiations of the text of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), an international treaty proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), until its ratification by Brazil. Social actors were identified and characterized: Actors linked to the federal government; to health and anti-smoking organizations; those representatives of tobacco corporations; social movements; and actors linked to farmers' associations and unions. The conflicting interests, the relations of conflict and cooperation, and the actors’ accumulations of power resources in the process of social production were analyzed in nine social facts identified in the period. The actors involved in this social game produce facts from their situations, establishing relations of conflict and cooperation that changed during the analyzed process. The results show the existence of relations of conflict between tobacco growers and industries regarding the unequal distribution of income and precarious conditions of work. In social facts related to smoking control, cooperative relations between tobacco farmers and industry and their conflict with actors that supported measures of tobacco control were verified. It was also concluded that the actions of social actors linked to the tobacco production sector and the local corporate press produced game moves that led to the rejection of the FCTC in the region, to the cooling of the clashes between tobacco farmer and industries, and the maintenance of tobacco industry profits in the region.

Typy úsměvu dítěte během rané interakce s matkou / Infant Smile Types in the Early Mother - Infant Interaction

Pulcová, Michaela January 2019 (has links)
The thesis deals with different types of smile of an infant during its early interaction with mother; or more specifically, it focuses on occurrence of smiles during social game routines as compared to other individual interactions, while also mapping the effect of mother's stimulating touch. The predictions were tested on data obtained by a quasi-experimental study, where natural interaction of 32 dyads of mothers with their four-month-old infants was coded for the occurrence and duration of four types of smile (simple, duchenne, play, and duplay), social game routines, and stimulating touch. The results showed the presence of all observed smiles in four-months old infants. Furthermore, there was a significantly higher incidence of all types of smiles during individual interactions as compared to social game routines, and at the same time the association of smiles with mother's stimulating touch was confirmed. Keywords: Smile, early interaction, play, social game routines, stimulating touch.

Facebook社群遊戲與社會連結的關係: 反思遊戲成癮之人格特質 / The relationship between social game and social connectedness: a reflection on game addictive personality

Hung, Chia Lien Unknown Date (has links)
The popularity of Facebook in Taiwan is said to be closely linked with social games features. Because social games carry certain characteristics, users may meet their social needs by playing social games. Also wonder if the assumption of online game players who addicted to playing games may neglect to develop the interpersonal relationship in real world. Social games integrate and copy the interpersonal networks in real world to online games. Furthermore, the interaction in social games may enhance the offline relationships. This study adopted online questionnaire survey via the Facebook board on PTT. With a total of 666 valid questionnaires, the results showed that (1) playing social games could not only satisfy the needs for entertaining and social contact, but also increase the sense of intimacy with friends. Through interactions via social games, users could understand more about the acquaintances. Therefore, playing social games will help develop weak ties;(2)an excessive use of social games makes little differences on enhancing the relationships, in terms of social connectedness. However, instead of addicting to the social games, if players use social game as a tool for communicating with others, then the social games can be seen as constructive on relationship building; and(3)users who have lower degree of conscientiousness or higher degree of neuroticism of personality trait may be more likely to be addicted to social games. People with higher degrees of extraversion are more likely to addict habitually to social games. Playing social games shows an impact on developing people’s social network. If players meet their social needs, it would reinforce the relations between personality, game use and social connectedness. In conclusion, the social game on Facebook can still contribute to the development of social network, but over-indulgence may cause the opposite effect.

Using smartphones and shared displays to connect and coordinate people in playful contexts

Salih, Jaffar, Bakosi, Keisha January 2013 (has links)
This paper explores the social aspects of a new kind of mobile games where players interact with each other in a shared physical space as well as in-game. As technology spreads throughout layers of culture and everyday life, and gaming becomes increasingly widespread, we see a future in social digital games through the use of smartphones, because of their prevalence and their technical versatility. This poses new challenges for designers. By using the context of music selection in semi-public to public situations and with the help of prototypes, we explore the problems of making selections and connections in large groups as well as delivering feedback. As a result of this project we arrive at elements such as participation, competition, scalability and the importance of social interactions between participants which can be used when designing systems in similar contexts.
