The research is qualitative, however it does not exclude the quantitative approach, mainly is expressed in the elaboration of the demonstrative charts of the master’s degree dissertations defended in the years 2001 through 2007. In the context of this approach we developed an exploratory and descriptive research, sustained initially by the bibliographical research. Following we made a documental research after searching in the files of the master’s programme, the dissertations and the reports from CAPES. We also used the internet to search the Curriculum Lattes of the master’s degree students and the guide-teachers. Finally we systematized the empirical data based on the theoretical reference that had been built.

Dias, Nidilaine Xavier 13 September 2018 (has links)
Having Pierre Bourdieu as the main theoretical reference, we try to answer two questions in this thesis: can we affirm the existence of a scientific field of global health in Latin America? To answer this question, we orient the research of the material from three concepts: scientific capital represented by the congresses in global health (GH) and humanities and social sciences (H&SC) in Latin America, agents - represented by Alasag and habitus - represented by the GH training programs in Latin America. The structure of this thesis follows the script we have constructed to answer the question of our research. The structure of this thesis follows the script we have constructed to answer the question of our research. These concepts led us to the script we use to investigate the constitution of a possible scientific field of OS in LA. Our analysis revealed the existence of a scientific field of GS in Latin America from the concept of Bourdieu, marked by strong political interventions of the institutions that integrate it, especially those that finance research in the field. These interventions are particularly characterized by the conditioning of the release of funds to specific thematic agendas, with the Sustainable Development Objectives 2030 being the main one. Since we can confirm the GH in the Latin America as scientific field, we can affirm that the H&SC integrate the same, conducting into a critical sense? The answer is yes and no, because we identified two moments of entry of H&SC into the area of Latin American health, which meant two distinct forms of action in that field. We agree with the authors that the GH in Latin America is a continuity of public, international and collective health - in the Brazilian case, and that the H&SC that have integrated these fields since the 1970s have assumed an established position in the scientific field of the GH in Latin America, dictating the rules of the game and conforming it based on their interests and subjects that they consider relevant. The second moment is marked by the expansion of the health area to the global geographic scope, the intense use of the internet and social medias by researchers, and the entry of new agents, originating from not traditional areas of knowledge as a sustainability, what we call outsiders, and that it assumed a differentiated position in the constitution of the field of the GH in the Latin America. Distant of the possibility of shaping the field in its own way, passing through different areas and seeming to care less about the classifications of \"pure\" or \"hybrids\" (CANESQUI, 2008). Between the characteristics that differentiate it, is being taken by the subjects were also conditioned, but in a more autonomous perspective because they are not tied to a specific agenda. Another relevant aspect is the critical posture outspoken in his papers on the term global health and all the political implications it represents. Finally, these outsiders refer more to the global health project for Latin America as a goal to be pursued by our region through a critical stance on the actions of developed countries. We believe that the potential of the GH scientific field in Latin America is far from the proper exploration it deserves. We are referring to a field that is still under construction, however, we note the need for a more audacious posture to contribute more for the global constitution of the scientific field of health from the Latin American perspective.

The role of heteregeneity in social problem-solving / Sistemas heterogêneos de resoluçao social de problemas

Noble, Diego Vrague January 2018 (has links)
This thesis reviews and investigates social problem-solving with a particular focus on artificial and heterogeneous systems. More specifically, we not only compile and comprehensively examine recent research results, but also discuss future directions in the study of such heterogeneous complex systems. Given their complex nature, such systems often defy analyses. Even computationally simple models can behave unpredictably after a few iterations. Therefore, one central issue in Social Computing is to devise models of social interaction that are amenable to investigation. This way, one can understand the complex relationships among the components and the outcome of the social process. This thesis surveys scientific inquiries concerned with fundamental aspects in social problemsolving systems and their impact in ability and performance of such systems. These aspects include modeling, communication structure and individual problem-solver traits. This thesis also reports the student endeavour during the period of research and summarizes several already published contributions. Among them there is (i) the study of general frameworks for the study of social problem-solving, (ii) the investigation of the role of centrality in individual and collective outcomes, and (iii) the exploration of heterogeneous models of social problem-solving. These three points, in an integrated perspective underpin the understanding of network and communication structures, adjust the strategic systems’ composition, and exploit problems’ structures and patterns in social problemsolving systems.

Face in Galatians : 'boasting in the Cross' as reconfigured honour in Paul's Letter

Harvey, David January 2017 (has links)
This thesis uses a model of honour to make sense of Paul's response to the situation in Galatians as he describes it in Galatians 6.12-15. We argue that the use of εὐpieροsigmaωpieέω at 6.12, and its close proximity to kappaalphaυχάομalphaι in the following verses, highlights that honour concern is present in this situation. We assess this by considering face, a term used by social theorists to describe the 'self as it appears to others', and facework, the strategies for maintaining and managing such - this is considered both as a social-scientific model and as a concept within ancient Mediterranean culture. This argument holds that Paul contradicts the opponents' seeking of 'good face' (εὐpieροsigmaωpieέω) as it is in direct contrast to what we term God's 'prosopagnosia' - pieρόsigmaωpieον [ὁ] θεὸς ἀνθρώpieου οὐ Gammaalphaμβάνει (2.6), and to his own position, which is to 'boast in the cross' (6.14). We read the idea of the boast in the cross as Paul's attempt to reconfigure honour within the Christian assemblies of Galatia, a reconfiguring that centralises Christ's disregard for common perceptions of honour, exemplified in his crucifixion. This approach then makes sense of Paul's autobiographical data as his own attempt to model Christ's 'prosopagnosia' and similarly reads the data in 5.13-6.10 as Paul's exhortation that the community live in this manner.

Desenvolvimento científico da contabilidade: uma análise baseada na epistemologia realista da ciência / Accounting scientific development: an analysis based on realistic epistemology of science

Farias, Manoel Raimundo Santana 23 April 2012 (has links)
The main objective of this study was to evaluate if the stage of accounting scientific development allows us to assert that the area has a social science status. The hypothesis evaluated was that the area partially attends the conditions to be a science, what suggests the thesis that accounting is a \"semiscience\", the first of three stages of a subject scientific evolution. The second and the third stages are, respectively emerging science and mature science. The study was based on realistic epistemology of science. To stablish the hypothesis, the thesis and the characterization of the necessary conditions to consider an area to have a science status, it was used a theoretical frame with the following variables: research community, social support, discourse dominion, realistic philosophical view, formal knowledge, knowledge obtained from other sciences, cognitive nature of research problems, accumulated knowledge, search for laws and regularities, and scientific method. The scientific development was evaluated from the analysis of the 229 most influent international accounting research articles in 42 years, in the period of 1968 to 2009, according to the Social Science Citation Index - SSCI Web of Science do Institute for Scientific Information - ISI/Web of Knowledge database. As a support to the analysis of the articles content NVIVO 9.2 da QSR International data analysis software was used. The general results indicate that 20 out of the 21 universities which have more than 10 articles are from the Unites States, and the 21st is from England. The most influent authors, excluding the participation as co-author, are respectively, Ray BALL; Patrícia M. DECHOW; Jennifer FRANCIS; Mark L. DEFOND; and Mark LANG. From all the articles investigated, 142 were empirical research involving hypothesis tests; 16 evaluated the methods and objectives of the researches; 94 developed and tested new hypothesis; 7 constructed theoretical frames; 13 constructed theoretical models. The theories which grounded the researches came from economy. There had also been theories from Psychology, Law, Sociology and Administration, among others. Twelve (12) research lines and themes had been identified. The evaluation of the variables from the theoretical frame, it was noted that accounting research do not fully attend them, but only partially. These evidences drove to the conclusion that accounting scientific stage goes beyond a discipline that deals with technological objectives in which the research is used to evaluate the efficiency of certain proceedings or ways to obtain certain ends. It suggests that the area is still in scientific development towards a social science, but in a \"semiscientific\" stage yet. As future research, we suggest, among others: the deep investigations about the isolated influence of each variable; and investigations on the influence of psychological, sociological and historical variables on the area\'s scientific development.

American Constitutional Law, Volume I and II: Civil Rights and Liberties

Stephens,, Otis H., Jr., Scheb,, John M., II, Glennon, Colin 01 January 2015 (has links)
AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL LAW, Volumes I and II, combines cases, decisions, and authorial commentary to maximize your learning and understanding in this course. These comprehensive volumes cover the entire range of topics in constitutional law. Volume I examines the institutional aspects of constitutional law; Volume II deals with civil rights and liberties. Each of the chapters includes an introductory essay providing the legal, historical, political, and cultural context of Supreme Court jurisprudence in a particular area of constitutional interpretation. Each chapter also contains several boxed features (labeled "Case in Point" and "Sidebar") to provide additional perspective and context for the set of edited decisions from the United States Supreme Court cases that follow. In selecting, editing, and updating the materials, the authors emphasize recent trends in major areas of constitutional interpretation, as well as many landmark decisions, some of which retain importance as precedents while others illustrate the transient nature of constitutional interpretation. Because the book provides a good balance of decisions and authorial commentary, this text appeals to instructors of law as well as instructors of political science. / https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu_books/1021/thumbnail.jpg

The experience of social sciences secondary school teachers on the changing curriculum:a case study of Mankweng cluster Capricorn District in Limpopo Province

Maepa, Malesela Matthews January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (M. Ed. (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2017 / This study aimed at exploring the experiences of Social Sciences teachers in secondary schools with regard to the implementation of the evolving curriculum policies in schools. In order for the study to be successful, a comprehensive literature review was done, and not only teachers, but also Curriculum advisors and circuit managers were selected and interviewed for the researcher to gain insight of the daily experiences in schools as they work with teachers on daily basis. The interviewees were from the Capricorn District in Mankweng circuit. The researcher used data collection instruments in a form of questerviews and individual interviews. The instruments were guided by the objectives of the study. The sampling was made in this cluster taking into cognisance its vastness, since it consists of 5 circuits which are Mankweng Circuit, Kgakotlou Circuit, Mamabolo Circuit, Lebopo Circuit and Dimamo Circuit. The total number of schools in all the circuits is 62. The study focused on the chosen high schools which comprised 2 schools per circuit and a minimum of 2 and maximum of 4 teachers per school were interviewed. One circuit manager and curriculum advisor were also interviewed in the study. The study’s findings revealed that there is a lack of thorough training. This is in spite of the fact that the department hosts a series of briefings which do not seem to achieve the expected outcomes due to the limited time allocated. In the view of teachers, training serves as a cornerstone for the implementation of the curriculum policies. Findings also showed that teachers were overloaded due to low enrolment as many children prefer schools with a good infrastructure which many rural schools lack. Poor enrolment results in limited teachers who are overloaded as they end up having to teach many subjects. Since teachers are partners in education, the study made recommendations that teachers be given enough training to overcome implementation challenges. Teachers should also further their studies in order to improve their knowledge regarding curriculum changes. The universities should also serve as partners in empowering teachers with policy developments. Lastly, teachers should be assessed more often on curriculum policies to avoid the incorrect implementation of policies

The Interrelationships of Socialization, Integration, and Spirituality Among Students at a Historically Black College

Rookstool, William 01 January 2018 (has links)
Higher education has not been successfully producing students with positive self-identities and an integrated sense of self with the world. Little research shows how the relationships among socialization, integration, and spirituality can address the problem of cognitive dissonance. The research question for this study examined interrelationships among socialization, integration, and spirituality at a small, historically black, Christian college located in the mid-South? This quantitative, exploratory study utilized Durkheim's integration theory and Blau's theory of structuralism as the theoretical base. Survey data were gathered through a survey developed from Astin's, Reeley's, and Ross & Straus's survey instruments to help create a conceptual model of the relationship among the 3 main variables. Survey data (n = 306) were analyzed through Spearman rho coefficients and chi-squared tests. Categorical analyses revealed relationships among levels of the 3 main variables. Findings include 2 main types of spirituality, that integration is correlated with higher levels of spirituality, that socialization is correlated with lower levels of spirituality, and that oversocialized students, without high levels of integration, had lower spirituality levels, indicating that socialization is a primary facilitator in with the process of integration. The findings may be used to promote positive social change through more clearly seeing the pivotal roles of integration and spirituality in the lives of college students. For students who do not experience spiritual integration in their lives, educators are better able to equip students to live lives that are more spiritual and enjoy a better quality of life.
