Distribution, Function, And Value Of Parowan Valley Projectile Points

Woods, Aaron R. 22 April 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis primarily addresses the quantities and distributions of Fremont projectile points in the Parowan Valley. First, I review previous research performed in Parowan Valley and outline currently accepted projectile point analysis and typology methods. I also review ethnographic data surrounding the function and value of projectile points. Then, I provide the results of an analysis of all projectile points in the Parowan Valley Archaeological Project collection. I note the large amount of projectile points in this collection and compare it to projectile point counts from other large Fremont sites.I also note chronological patterns in Parowan Valley using projectile points as relative temporal markers. With this data and the data provided by other theses on Parowan Valley, I argue that sites in Parowan Valley served as centers for aggregation and other socio-economic practices in the Late Formative Period.

Proportional Representation of Students with Disabilities Based on Race, Gender, and Socio-Economic Status in Virginia

Casey, Maxine Austin 01 May 2017 (has links)
For more than three decades, research has shown that the special education referral, identification, and placement processes can be discriminatory (Artiles, Rueda, Salazar, and Higareda, 2005). Proportionately, there are more minority students of low socio-economic status than are White students in special education categories that are the high incidence special education categories. Students with high-incidence disabilities make up 80% of all students with disabilities. High-Incidence disabilities share these characteristics, (1) often hard to distinguish from students without disabilities, especially in non-school settings, (2) often display a combination of academic, and (3) behavioral and social problems (Friend and Bursuck, 2012). Special Education licensure and endorsement varies from state to state, as does the terminology used in describing the knowledge that is required and the students to whom it applies. In most states students identified for special education services for the categories of Intellectual Disability (ID), Specific Learning Disability (SLD) and students with Emotional Disturbance (ED) are identified as high- incidence disabilities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of relative representation of male and female, minority, and low socioeconomic students with disabilities served in special education programs across 132 public school divisions within eight Superintendent']s regions in the 2013-14 school year, as published by the Virginia Department of Education. Data from the Virginia Department Education (VDOE) were analyzed to present an analysis of three categories of the special education populations (ID, SLD and ED), racial, (Black and Hispanic) and socio-economic status. Findings indicated that fewer than 50% of the school divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia showed disproportionality, however when examined by Superintendent's regions there were some geographical areas that showed some concentrations of disproportionality. / Ed. Geospatial analysis of canine leptospirosis risk factors in the central Great Plains region

Raghavan, Ram January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Diagnostic Medicine/Pathobiology / K.R. Harkin / T.G. Nagaraja / Associations of land cover/land use, socio-economic and housing, and hydrological and soil-hydrological variables were evaluated retrospectively as potential risk factors for canine leptospirosis in Kansas and Nebraska using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The sample included 94 dogs positive for leptospirosis based on a positive polymerase chain reaction test for leptospires in urine, isolation of leptospires on urine culture, a single reciprocal serum titer of 12,800 or greater, or a four-fold rise in reciprocal serum titers over a 2 to 4 week period; and 185 dogs negative for leptospirosis based on a negative polymerase chain reaction test and reciprocal serum titers less than 400. Publicly available geographic datasets representing land cover/land use, socio-economic and housing characteristics, and hydrologic and soil hydrologic themes were analyzed along with geocoded addresses of case/control locations in GIS. Among different land cover/land use variables evaluated, urban areas (high and medium intensity urban areas and urban areas in general) and evergreen forests and forest/woodlands in general were significant risk factors. Among socio-economic and demographic determinants evaluated, houses lacking complete plumbing facilities, poverty status by age (18-64), and living within 2500 meters of a university/college or parks/forests were significant risk factors. Proximity to water features, hydrologic density and frequently flooded areas were identified as significant risk factors for canine leptospirosis among hydrologic and soil-hydrologic variables. Pet owners whose dogs live in such areas or under these circumstances should consider vaccination to prevent canine leptospirosis.

An Exploratory Investigation of Socio-Economic Phenomena that May Influence Accounting Differences in Three Diverse Countries

Hudack, Lawrence R. (Lawrence Ralph) 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to provide an exploratory structure to respond to, and tries to resolve, an existing void in international accounting research. The void is a lack of coherently structured, nation-specific, descriptive research to investigate socio-economic phenomena which may influence financial accounting. This dissertation's salient features include a political economy theory, an exploratory, sociological method, and a case study format. The political economy of accounting, introduced by Tinker [1980] and refined by Cooper and Sherer [1984], emphasizes a persuasive social relations dimension. This theory motivates selection of three countries (the United States, France, and Japan) that appear to have divergent socio-cultural environments. An exploratory and analytical approach of modified (enlarged) exogenism, developed by Smith [1973, 1976] and adapted to accounting by McKinnon [1986], provides an analytic structure for this exploratory investigation. Modified exogenism focuses upon an open, dynamic social system (the process of financial accounting), and provides analysis reflecting four major areas (the environment, intrusive events, intra-system activity, and trans-system activity). After examining the nation-specific financial accounting (socio-economic) structures for each country, an analysis of selected financial disclosures attempts to gain a better understanding of how socio-economic factors have influenced the development of financial accounting. My primary objective is to attempt to provide some insight about ,how diverse socio-political factors have impacted the development of financial accounting in three countries. Library research of nation-specific literature attempts to extract a relatively accurate picture of social, political, and economic institutions and policies, and relates such findings to financial accounting processes for each nation. This dissertation attempts to provide a necessary foundation for future theoretical international accounting harmonization studies.

Relating school codes of conduct to learner behaviour

Pentz, Janos 10 May 2011 (has links)
Schools and other educational institutions mirror the violence and moral decay in South African society. Maintaining discipline therefore in schools these days is a difficult task. There are many factors influencing learner behavior and in this study we investigate to see what impact a code of conduct has on learner behavior in selected schools. I adopted a qualitative approach to answer the research questions that sought to explore whether or not intent of the codes of conduct in sampled schools is primarily moral or administrative, whether the learners in the public secondary schools selected are generally well-behaved, whether or not there is a relationship between learner behaviour and the codes of conduct at the selected schools and whether or not the infusion of values into codes of conduct in general might affect learner behaviour. A case study involving three high schools was conducted. Data was collected through document analysis, interviews and questionnaires. It has emerged in the findings that, with regard to learner behavior, there is a clear link between learner behaviour and the culture of the school concerned as well as between the culture of the school and the culture of the community that is served by the schools. Regarding the impact that existing codes of conduct have on learner behavior, it seems that the impact that a code can have is related to its development and implementation process. Due to these findings, it seems clear that values need to be considered in the development of a code of conduct. This may lead to a positive relationship between learner behavior and codes of conducts for learners. The study hopes to contribute to the existing body of knowledge and will be useful to school governing bodies, principals and educators by enabling them to see the benefits that a code of conduct could have on learner behaviour when values are included in the developmental and implementation process. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Having solidarity as the aim of the research, ways of expressing such reality have been sought, which led to the universe of the Civil Society Organization in its various expressions and realities. The study was initially carried out along with the Civil Society Organization of Londrina Paraná, which added up to a total of 162 entities studied in order to identify their main characteristics and profile. This has allowed to the creation of a reality like map that comprises the universe of the Civil Society Organization of the city. Later, four entities were selected to represent the diversity of initiatives, in which qualitative elements that were not included in the initial quantitative research were then deeply analyzed. The major directors of those organizations were interviewed to identify and analyze different perspectives. The qualitative investigation was guided by an interview script based on the objectives and issues of the research. The analyses showed important interpretative elements and mainly indicated the diversity of positioning that constitutes the universe of these entities in the city of Londrina, which opposes to the simplistic view of a phenomenon dominated by cohesion and uniformity of interests and actions. The wide divergences identified, plus the diversity of purposes and of world and society view that pervade the different organizations researched, functioned as the basis to choose the topic of this study, distinguished by libertarian and liberal solidarity / O presente trabalho concentrou-se na discussão da temática da solidariedade sob distintas perspectivas, nomeadamente a proposta liberal e a libertária. Le cinéma en salle face à la multiplication des écrans. Une analyse pluridisciplinaire de la situation en Turquie. / Movie Theatres Facing The Multiplication of Screens. A Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Situation in Turkey

Vitrinel, Ece 10 March 2015 (has links)
The object of this research is the movie theaters and the relationship of the audience with them. To embrace all aspects of the movie theaters in the era of proliferation of screens, the study which follows up a socio-economic perspective articulating quantitative and qualitative methods is organized into three parts. The first part describes the general lines of the cinematic experience with its screens and sites, the second directly addresses the context of the film industry in Turkey, and the third sets out to analyze the place of the movie spectators in this particular context. It thus tries to build up like a jigsaw puzzle, a portrait of the typical spectator in Turkey, hoping that this portrait would be relevant to understand today’s audience. The field observations made within the framework of this study demonstrate the existence of a common line cutting across all types of movie theaters, whether it be multiplexes, neighborhood cinemas or alternative screening areas, and illustrate the continuation of the theater experience at home.
