Reis, Clerson Dalvani January 2010 (has links)
The state of Tocantins is every day getting more public and private investments for development of irrigated agriculture. This growth is not accompanied with sufficient development of researching and dissemination of technical requirements for irrigation in this region. This work is an experiment in Porto Nacional, the central region of Tocantins State, with the irrigated cultivation of melon under different intensities and frequencies. We applied three doses daily: a scientifically calculated, another applying the usual methods applied in the region and the other with the usual methods 10%. All doses were applied in two ways: application of a single daily dose and application of the same dose split in two applications a day. The experiment showed that the amount of water applied traditionally by irrigators in the region is approximately 75% and 95% higher than that calculated by the Penman-Monteith. This traditional application, compared with the dose determined from the calculation of evapotranspiration, does not improve the results in crops as the yield, brix, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight, flesh thickness and fruit number discarded and the fractioning of the daily dose into two applications, one in the morning and afternoon, improves productivity and increases the thickness of the pulp, both features of interest of farmers.

A partir de 45 dapp e até a colheita (115 dapp), a umidade do solo até a profundidade de 1,20 m foi menor nos tratamentos IDC e ID em relação ao tratamento IP / Irrigation is important practice in the fruit crop growing in the Brazilian Semiarid region, due to low magnitude raintall, with irregular time distribuition, which is not enough to supply water demand by plants. Hence, a research work was designed to evoluate the effects of different irrigation schedulings on wine grapevine, particularly on plant ecophysiological behavior and yield. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Tropical Semi-Arid, in Petrolina, State of Pernambuco, Brazil, during the first crop growing season (April 13 to August 6, 2010) of grapevine cv. Syrah grafted on Paulsen 1103 rootstock, planted on grid spacing of 3 m between rows and 1m between plants. Drip irrigation system was used with 2.5 L.h-1 flow emitter spaced in 0.5 m. The experiment was designed in randomized blocks, with 4 replications and 3 irrigation treatments: full irrigation (FI) - irrigation throuhgtout the entire growing season; deficit irrigation (DI) - water application interrupted since 45 days after pruning (dap) until harvest; e regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) - irrigation interrupted since 45 dapp but occasionally performed to increase soil water storage in the effective root zone (0,6 m depth). Irrigation scheduling was performed based on crop evapotranspiration (ETc), which was estinated by the relationship between reference evapotranspiration (ETo) and crop coefficients (Kc). Soil water content at 1.2 m depth from 45 dap to 115 dap (harvest), was lower in DI and RDI treatments, when compared with FI treatment. Higher pre-daw leaf water potential values were found in RDI treatment at 56 dap (-4.2 MPa), and in DI treatment at 99 dap (-5 MPa)

Interpretação dos resultados de ensaios TDR para a determinação do teor de umidade dos solos / Interpretation of TDR test results for determining the moisture content of soil

Victor Jack Valdivia Calderón 20 April 2010 (has links)
The objective of this work was to calibrate a coiled TDR probe used to measure the water content of soil. It was used an approach that takes into account a physical interpretation of the values of the dielectric constants. The calibration equations were determined by means of a mixed dielectric model, which relates the dielectric constant of a multi-phase mixture with the dielectric constants and volume fractions of its components. Tests carried out in the laboratory allowed development of two calibration equations for the assessment of the volumetric and gravimetric soil water content. Calibration was performed with measurements of dielectric constants in different liquids and soils, using a conventional TDR probe and a coiled TDR. The readings performed with the two probes were then compared. The dielectric model of two phases permitted describing the contribution of the dielectric material of the body of the probe coil and the materials investigated. It has been shown that knowledge of the physical and geometrical characteristics of the TDR probe used in the tests is crucial for the quality of the dielectric constant readings, and consequently the determination of water content in situ.

Quaisquer alterações que venham a ocorrer nas taxas de precipitação, poderão assim, desencadear mudanças significativas na maneira como a Floresta Atlântica aloca carbono, investindo mais em raízes finas do que nos demais órgãos / Abstract: Tropical forests are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems on the planet, however they occur in poor soils. To overcome this condition plants adapt themselves allocating additional biomass to organs where resources are limiting. Some of these organs are the fine roots, roots responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil. They represent a high cost of production to the plants, but at the same time, they are an important source of carbon to the soil. Variations in the resources available can influence stock and production of fine roots and because of that, the expectation was that: i) fine root stock and annual production would increase with elevation; ii) fine roots production would be higher in periods of lower moisture; iii) a higher fine roots biomass would be found in the superficial soil layer (0-10 cm); iv) the use of a short time of sampling in smaller soil portions should not affect the accuracy of the chosen method. To test these hypotheses five plots located in Atlantic Forest along an elevation gradient were selected. The information about the forest structure, floristic composition and soil traits were known from previous studies. Each individual plot had 16 ingrowth cores were installed to monitor the quarterly production of fine roots. Submontane Forest had the smallest stock and annual production of fine roots, while Montane Forest had the highest ones. Periods of higher production coincide with higher temperatures and accumulated rainfall. The first layer of soil, from zero to 10 cm, had the highest fine roots biomass. The method adaptation did not significantly influence the fine roots sampling. The soil water content was the variable which best explained annual production. According to the research results, the conclusion achieved was that the fine roots stock is not directly influenced by climatic variation over elevation, but the seasonal variation influenced the fine roots production. Any possible changes in precipitation rates, may thus trigger significant changes in the way that Atlantic Forest allocates carbon, investing more in fine roots that in other organs / Mestrado / Biologia Vegetal / Mestra em Biologia Vegetal

Evaluating the effect of crop rotations and tillage practices on soil water balances of selected soils and crop performances in the Western Cape

Swiegelaar, Nina Antionette 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of crop rotation and soil tillage on the soil water balance and water use efficiency of wheat, canola, lupin and medics in the Swartland sub region of the Western Cape. This trail was conducted as a component study within a long-term crop rotation/tillage trial during 2012 and 2013 at the Langgewens Research Farm (33016’42.33” S; 18042’11.62” E; 191m) of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture near Moorreesburg. The experiment was laid out as a randomized complete block, with a split-plot treatment design and replicated four times. Three crop rotation systems, continues wheat (WWWW), wheat/medic/wheat/medic (WMcWMc) and wheat/canola/wheat/lupin (WCWL) were allocated to main plots. . Each main plot was subdivided into four sub-plots allocated to four tillage treatments namely: zero-till (soil left undisturbed and planted with zero-till planter), no-till (soil left undisturbed until planting and then planted with a tined no-till planter), minimum-till (soil scarified March/April and then planted with a no-till planter) and conventional tillage (soil scarified late March/early April, then ploughed and planted with a no-till planter). All straw, chaff and stubble remained on the soil surface and no-grazing was allowed on all tillage treatments. Three replicates were included in this current study. Only the no-till (NT) and conventional till (CT) were included in this current study as main tillage treatments. The volumetric soil water content was monitored at weekly intervals during the active growing season (May-October) and once a month during the fallow period (November-April) using a Diviner 2000 soil moisture meter. The Diviner 2000 was used to record the soil water content at every 100 mm depth increment up to the maximum depth of the profile. At the end of the growing season the total biomass, grain yield and quality parameters were determined. The soil water balance data calculated from the 2012 season were found to be inconclusive due to too shallow installation of soil water monitoring tubes and big variations in the depth complicating any attempt in comparing data from treatments and cropping systems. Soil water monitoring tubes was installed to a depth of 900 mm in the 2013 season. Complications during planting in the 2013 season resulted in very poor emergence in the CT sites. Weed counts revealed that only 38 % of CT sites were covered by crop, 31 % with weeds and 31 % were completely bare. The NT sites had 40 % crop coverage, 50.5 % grass weed coverage and only 9.5% bare surface. As a consequences crop rotation had no effect on the soil water balance, while the tillage treatments showed a response. The effect that tillage had on the soil water balance was clearly shown in the 2013 season, in which 79 mm more rainfall occurred than the long-term average. NT retained more soil water in the profile in the drier first half of the season when only 30 % of the total rainfall in the 2013 season occurred. There was no real difference in the soil water retention in the second half of the season where 70 % of the total rainfall in the 2013 season occurred. Crop rotation did have a positive effect on grain yield. Wheat monoculture was out performed by legume based cropping systems. This trend was also observed in the biomass production. No significant difference between tillage treatments were recorded when comparing grain yield data. However wheat mono culture was again out-performed by the McWMcW, CWLW and LWCW systems producing on average significantly higher biomass. The data from both seasons suggest that in seasons where more rainfall than the long term average occurs, there is no difference in the RUE between cropping systems or tillage practices.. This study highlighted the major effect that the prevailing weather conditions have and that the expected advantages associated with NT most likely only come into play in dry conditions when plant water availability is limited.

Cellier, Antoine 19 December 2012 (has links)
In Mediterranean region, forest fires are a major problem leading to the desertification of the environment. Use of composts is considered as a solution for soil and vegetation rehabilitation.First, we observed the effects of three urban composts and their mode of application (laid on the soil surface or mixed into the soil) on soil restoration after fire: a municipal waste compost (MWC), a compost of sewage sludge (SSC) and a green waste compost (GWC) under laboratory conditions. Input of composts increased organic matter and soil nutrient content, and enhanced carbon and nitrogen mineralisation and total microbial biomass throughout the incubations. MWC induced the highest improvement while GWC input had no significant effect compared to the control. Composts mixed with soil weakly limited runoff whereas composts laid at the soil surface significantly reduced runoff and increased percolation and retention, particularly with the MWC.Then, we studied in situ the effects of a SSC on soil and vegetation regeneration after fire. The first months after amendment, this input increased grass species biomass. Although no significant effect was observed on other studied plants, plant biomass was more heterogeneous on amended plots while plant biodiversity was more homogeneous. The use of compost increased rapidly soil nutrient content and soil water content but plant nutrition was improved more or less durably depending species. Compost effects on microbial activities were low and only sporadic. Moreover, no negative effect was observed during the two years of experimentation.

The experiment was let vegetation home, being cultivated the plants in vases of 12 liters during 255 days. The adopted experimental design was randomized entirely, mounted in outline of subdivided portions, with three repetitions for each soil. The growth evaluations were achieved each 60 days and the analyzed data by the surface technique of answering. The tenor of soil humidity in the field capacity varies with the adopted tension in its determination. The growth of the coffee plant conilon in WD 0% was higher to the obtained in the water deficits of 33% and 67% of OR and URY. The largest growth of the culture was observed in FC2 of OR and in FC1 of URY. The smallest growth was obtained in the water deficits of the certain field capacity in the tension of 0,033 MPa (FC3) of OR and URY, what unfeasible its adoption in the estimate of the irrigation sheet, being used the camera of pressure of Richards. The x leaf water potential anti-morning (Ψam) showed to be a good indicator of the degree of hydration of the plants. The largest hydration to foliate was observed in WD 0%, being in CC2 for OR (Ψam = -0,17 MPa), being the water kept by the soil to a potential matric (Ψm) of -0,010 MPa and in CC1 for URY (Ψam = -0,33 MPa), which Ψm was the -0,006 MPa. To smallest hydration happened in WD 67% and in the FC3, also for OR (Ψam = -0,68 MPa) as for URY (Ψam = -1,3 MPa), being the water kept of Ψm of -0,20 MPa, for both soils. In WD 33% and WD 67% in the levels of the capacity of field of OR and URY, they were verified a reduction in the values leaf area, height and diameter of the stem of the plants. The accumulation of total dry matter and leaf water potential anti-morning observed in OR were superior to the of URY, in all of the levels of the field capacity and water deficits, resulting in the larger initial growth of the coffee plant conilon in this soil.
