Ecology and conservation of cetaceans in the waters between Angola and the Gulf of Guinea, with focus on the Atlantic humpback dolphin (Sousa teuszii)

Weir, Caroline R. January 2011 (has links)
Part one of this thesis examined the tropical oceanic cetacean community occurring between Togo and Angola (6°N-11°S latitude).  Twenty-two cetacean species were recorded during 5905.3 hr of dedicated survey effort from platforms of opportunity between 2004 and 2009.  Sperm whales (<i>Physeter macrocephalus</i>) and humpback whales (<i>Megaptera novaeangliae</i>) were the most frequently-sighted species, and exhibited significant differences in occurrence related to water depth and survey month.  Five species inhabited both neritic and oceanic waters, while the remainder were exclusively oceanic.  The habitat preferences and niches (based on depth, seabed slope, sea surface temperature (SST) and frontal strength) of eight species were examined using classification trees and a principle component analysis.  Water depth and SST appeared to be the primary variables (of those examined) explaining the presence of most species.  Part two of the thesis was a study of the Atlantic humpback dolphin (<i>Sousa teuszii</i>), a species endemic to nearshore eastern tropical Atlantic (ETA) waters.  A total of 1,626.8 km of boat- and vehicle-based effort in Namibe Province during 2008, produced 52 <i>S. teuszii </i>sightings.  Further sightings were recorded during 53.7 hr of shore-effort at Flamingos (<i>n</i>=6) and opportunistically (<i>n</i>=13). Ten individuals were photo-identified. Multiple resightings (and an absence of unmarked animals) indicated low abundance, high site fidelity and year-round occurrence.  <i>Sousa teuszii </i>produced simple (85% had a single inflection point) whistles in the 2.5-23.4 kHz fundamental frequency range and broadband click trains with repetition rates varying from 5.8-250.8 clicks/s.  The implications of the findings for the future monitoring and conservation of cetaceans in the ETA are discussed.

Population status and habitat use of Indian Ocean humpback dolphins (sousa plumbea) along the south coast of South Africa

Conry, Danielle Shanè January 2017 (has links)
Long-lived, top-level predators, such as some marine mammals, serve as important indicators of ecosystem health. Assessing the abundance and habitat use of such marine top predators is essential for the formulation of effective conservation and management actions. There is considerable concern over the viability of small humpback dolphin opulations across a global scale and a number of studies have raised concerns over their vulnerability to extinction. In light of the recent uplisting of Indian Ocean humpback dolphins (Sousa plumbea) to ‘Endangered’ on the South African Red Data list, there is an urgent need for a greater understanding of the abundance and spatial distribution of this species along the South African coastline. Using small vessels as survey platforms between March 2014 and June 2015, this study attempted to determine the abundance, spatial distribution and habitat preferences of Indian Ocean humpback dolphins along 150 km of South Africa’s south coast. A further aim was to assess the utilisation of the current Marine Protected Area network by humpback dolphins along this coastline relative to areas outside of formal protection. Mark-recapture methods applied to photo-identification data produced abundance estimates of 84 individuals (95% CI: 72-115) within the study area for both open and closed models. An average group size of 3.94 individuals (range 1-12; SD = ± 2.82) was observed during the study, indicating a decrease in average group size of ~45 % from a previous assessment in 2002/03. Such a decline in group size could potentially be a result of a change in social structure in response to reduced prey availability. Spatial analyses of humpback dolphin geographic positions, using a kernel density estimator (KDE) and effort-weighted density grid analyses, indicate that the species is unevenly distributed over the coastal zone within the area. Sightings occurred at the highest densities within Buffels Bay and along Goukamma MPA, followed by Plettenberg Bay, Nature’s Valley, and around the Bloukrans, Elandsbos and Groot River East mouths. Habitat preference was assessed using a standard classification-based method and the results indicate a strong preference, in particular, for Dissipative Intermediate Sandy Coast habitat, followed by Very Exposed Rocky Coast, Intermediate Sandy Coast, Estuarine Shore, Mixed Shore and Inshore Reef habitats. Areas of high humpback dolphin densities appear to be associated with these habitat types, especially with Dissipative-Intermediate Sandy Coast habitat. Humpback dolphins were sighted at relatively low densities along stretches of coastline consisting predominately of Exposed Rocky Shore habitat. Long expanses of this habitat type may limit humpback dolphin movements along the coast. The observed patterns in distribution and habitat preferences may be linked to the availability of prey and/or the avoidance of predators. Average sightings per kilometer travelled (SPUE) indicate that the utilisation of the Robberg and Tsitsikamma MPAs by humpback dolphins was low, most likely due to the low availability of sandy coastline in these areas. In contrast, the utilisation of the Goukamma MPA, which is characterised by a high availability of Dissipative-Intermediate Sandy Coast, was very high. The low population numbers and declines in average group size of Indian Ocean humpback dolphins within the study area warrant concern and call for effective conservation and management measures. In light of ever-increasing levels of anthropogenic threats to coastal areas, future research and long-term monitoring of the population is essential to broaden our knowledge of the species and to detect population trends.

The current paper has as its main purpose to understand his way of life, his limits and his attempts of social mobility. Cruz e Souza lived in a period of time were there were deep changes both in the political and social contexts. His disappointment with the society of that period has become into poetry. His poetry has earned important space in the research field and a decadentist symbolist aesthetic was the way he founded to better express this disappointment. The letters he wrote to his friends and relatives were also used in the research, since they enabled us to perceive his dreams, desires, expectations and frustrations. The course of his life worked as a guide that led us to understand the contradictions, the ambiguities, the possibilities and the limitations concerning to the attempts of social mobility of a free black man living in a period of time marked by discussions about the end of the slavery and the establishment of the Republic . In the first chapter, we tried to make a brief introduction about Cruz e Souza and his family, his first years as a poet in Desterro / Florianopolis, his relationship with the city as well as its organization and urban modernization process. In the second chapter, we emphasize the poet s networking in the society during his youth, where theater and sessions with readings and discussions of philosophy and literary news as well as the literary soirees were responsible for gathering this little group of young people. In the third and last chapter, we analyze Cruz e Souza in Rio de Janeiro, his new social circle, the publication of his main works, his search for a room in the world of poetry and the beginning of a group of symbolist poets identified by their decadentist aesthetic / O tema desta dissertação de mestrado em História procurou fazer uma re-leitura da experiência de vida de Cruz e Sousa.

Built by intense social mobilization, the Rural Education seeks to strengthen public policies and community education actions that recognize, build and work in harmony with the knowledge of the rural people and promote global social awareness and autonomy of social subjects by means of emancipation. In Brazil, one of his achievements was the implementation of the Program of Support for Higher Education in Rural Education Graduation (PROCAMPO) who have as one of its principles the Alternancy Education and ensured the creation of the Rural Education Graduation on Federal University of Viçosa, started in 2014. Bearing this in mind, this research aimed to understand how there was the initial implementation process of this Graduation, analyzing its relations with the concept of social emancipation in the way approached by Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Therefore, we carried out a qualitative case study per participant observations with the educational staff meetings and activities in their first semester, especially those called Startup Common. In addition, were used registration documents of the teaching staff. It was concluded in the analysis that LICENA constituted, at that time, as a emancipatory emergency it promotes actions that had relations with the ethical, political and aesthetic dimensions of the new common sense, strengthened knowledge-emancipation and promoted intercultural translation and ecology of knowledge. Thus, we believed that LICENA is an educational movement performed from an alternative epistemology, keeping close relations with the prerogatives of the promotion of social emancipation in the paradigmatic transition.

ALVES, Paulo 31 January 2009 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-06-12T18:33:54Z (GMT).
