[pt] MODELAGEM, VALIDAÇÃO EXPERIMENTAL DE PROTÓTIPO E CARACTERIZAÇÃO METROLÓGICA DE DENSÍMETROS QUE UTILIZAM O PRINCÍPIO DO DESLOCAMENTO DO CENTRO DE CARENA / [en] MODELING, EXPERIMENTAL VALIDATION OF PROTOTYPE AND METROLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF DENSIMETERS THAT USE THE PRINCIPLE OF DISPLACEMENT OF THE CENTER OF BUOYANCY

RONAN ALVES DA PAIXAO 04 July 2022 (has links)
[en] In the context of craft breweries, a recently invented liquid density meter works by leveraging an unusual principle: the displacement of the center of buoyancy. This meter obtains its measurements from its own tilt while it is floating, but its original implementation converts the accelerometer measurements into density measurements with a polynomial regression. However, it doesn t make temperature corrections, so that the influence of this quantity is disregarded in the regression. Additionally, the meter does not indicate its measurement uncertainty. The objective of this dissertation was to create a mathematical model of the phenomenon, which was not found in the existing bibliography; use the model to obtain an estimate of the measurement uncertainty, comparing the uncertainty methodologies of the GUM and the one that uses the Monte Carlo method of its Supplement 1 and using the second approach to validate the first; perform experiments with a prototype of such a meter, comparing the results with a laboratory densimeter; and perform the metrological characterization of the meter. All these objectives were met, and the characterization included: a suggestion of calibration and measurement procedures; the results of the experiment, including the expected output distribution, with mean of Weight of an object – for a rigid solid= 1.0500 g/cm(3) and maximum expanded uncertainty U95 percent(p) = U95 percent(1.0000) = 0.0028 g/cm(3) (k = 1.96 coverage factor) in the measurement range between 1.0000 g/cm(3) and 1.1000 g/cm(3); equations for estimating the uncertainty of this type of meter; the estimation of an uncertainty curve for the calibration range, according to the calibration measurements; the contributions of each input quantity to the estimated output uncertainty and some suggestions on how the meter could be modified to improve the result.

The objectives of the present work were to evaluate the process of biodeterioration in the wood of tipuana trees in the city of São Paulo and to relate the alterations in the anatomical structures and physical and mechanical properties with there falling risk. In the sidewalks of selected regions of the city, 1109 trees were characterized taking into consideration aspects as surroundings, general conditions, dendrometric variables, external and internal biodeterioration and falling risk estimated by using a structural model developed by IPT. The biodeterioration and the resistance mechanisms of the trees were evaluated at a macro and microscopic levels. The alterations on the wood properties were analysed by X-rays densitometry and by performing physical and mechanical tests (specific gravity; bending resistance); the tension distribution in the wood was analyze by finite-elements method. The old aged trees encountered, did not show any sign of decline, eventhough, the general aspect of their surroundings was critical by the inadequate places they were planted; inappropriate management and/or occurrence of injuries. The trees had their trunks deteriorated by xylophagous organisms, mainly fungi and subterranean-termites, and some wood borer beetle too, which affected the heartwood. The association between the presence of the first two organinsms, the dendrometric variables and the risk of falling, was statistically significant at the 5% level. The infestation of the trees by the subterranean-termite Coptotermes gestroi was at high levels, however, it was considered as a secundary plague-organism, because its attack was strongly associated with the previously decayed heartwood by Ganoderma sp.. The decaying fungi observed were classified as white rot and soft rot, being the white rot more common in the heartwood of the trees. As a resistance mechanism of the trees against biodeterioration, it was observed the compartimentalization of the wood characterized by the accumulation of extractives in the cells. Decaying fungi caused significant reductions in the following wood properties: specific gravity, rupture strength to bending and modulus of elasticity either in incipient or intense decay. Trees trunk rupture and falling risk were associated mainly to biodeterioration intensity and dendrometric variables. The alteration of tension distribution in the wood was analyzed in relation to the stage, size and position of the deterioration in the wood of the trees.

A total of 300 Hisex White hens at 18 weeks of age, distributed in a completely randomized design in factorial 5 x 2, with 5 replicates of 6 birds. The factors studied were 5 granulometries obtained by increasing the proportion of coarse limestone (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) compared to 2 types of thin and light, with and without artificial light. No significant interaction between factors (size x lighting program) for all parameters evaluated on performance, egg quality and bone. There was also no significant effect on the level of coarse limestone in diets on performance and egg quality, however had an effect on bone quality. Among the light programs, showed that the use of artificial light showed eggs with higher Haugh Units compared to birds that received only natural light. With respect to feeding behavior no significant interaction between factors limestone, light and time. However, significant effects of the interaction (light and time), there was a higher consumption in birds without artificial light in relation to artificial light during the hours of 6am to 9h40min and 12:40 to 17:40 and the interaction effect (limestone and time) , it was observed that at the time of 6am to 9h40min, increased consumption, corresponded to the gradual increase in the ration of coarse limestone. For laying hens in the first laying cycle, created in geographic coordinates that developed in the research, changes in particle size of limestone provided an improvement in bone quality of the birds and the use of artificial light may favor albumen quality as Haugh unit.

Estimating the aboveground biomass of central African tropical forests at the tree, canopy and region level

Bastin, Jean-François 24 October 2014 (has links)
Human pressure on forest resources increased significantly during the past decades through land use and land use change, especially in the tropics where forest clearing is a major source of CO2 release in the atmosphere. Consequently, forests are the focus of international environmental policies and discussions aiming to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (i.e. REDD+). The capacity of participating countries to regularly provide accurate forests C stocks measurements at a national scale thus represents an important challenge to address. In dense forests, generally only the above ground biomass (AGB) is measured as it accounts for more than 50% of total C stocks. However, important gaps remain at each scale of measurement, i.e. from felled tree to regional mapping, with the resulting errors propagation through these different scales being probably the most concerning issue.

In the present work, we propose to address these issues by using a multi-scale approach in order to improve our global understanding of AGB variations in dense tropical forests of Central Africa. In particular, we studied (i) forest AGB prediction from remote-sensing textural analysis, (ii) the potential role of largest trees as predictor of the entire forest-stand AGB and (iii) intra- and inter-individual radial variation of wood specific gravity (WSG, i.e. oven-dry mass divided by its green volume) and its potential consequences on the estimation of the AGB of the tree.
First, we analyzed the potential use of textural analysis to predict AGB distribution based on very high spatial resolution satellite scenes. In particular, we used the Fast Fourier Transform Ordination (FOTO) method to predict AGB from heterogeneous forest stands of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Here, based on 26 ground plots of 1-ha gathered from the field, plus a successful combination of Geoeye and Quickbird contrasted scenes, we were able to predict and to map AGB with a robust model (R² = 0.85; RMSE = 15%) based on textural gradients.
Secondly, the research of AGB indicators was focused on the dissection of the role played by largest trees. Here we found largest trees not only hold large share of forest carbon stock but they contain the print of most of forest-stand structure and diversity. Using a large dataset from western Cameroon to eastern DRC, we developed a non-linear model to predict forest carbon stock from the measurement of only a few large trees. We found the AGB of the 5 % largest stems allow to predict the AGB of the entire forest-stand yielding an R² of 0.87 at a regional scale. Focusing on largest trees species composition, we also showed only 5 % of species account for 50 % of total AGB.
In the end, we investigated inter- and intra-individual WSG variations. Despite recognized inter- and intra-specific variations along the radial axis, their ecological determinants and their consequences on trees aboveground biomass assessments remain understudied in tropical regions. To our knowledge, it has never been investigated in Africa. Using a 3-D X-Ray scanner, we studied the radial WSG variation of 14 canopy species of DRC tropical forests. Wood specific gravity variance along the radial profile was dominated by differences between species intercepts (~76%), followed by the differences between their slope (~11%) and between individual cores intercept (~10%). Residual variance was minimal (~3%). Interestingly, no differences were found in the comparison of mean WSG observed on the entire core and the mean WSG at 1-cm under the bark (intercept ~0; coefficient = 1.03). In addition, local values of WSG are strongly correlated with mean value in the global data base at species level.

I deeply believe these results favor the development of promising tools to map and to estimate accurately the AGB of tropical forest-stands. The information provided by largest trees on the entire forest-stand is particularly interesting both for developing new sampling strategies for carbon stocks monitoring and to characterize tropical forest-stand structure. In particular, our results should provide the opportunity to decrease current sampling cost while decreasing its main related uncertainties, and might also favor an increase of the current sampling coverage.

Effect of Minimum Suppression and Maximum Release Years on Compression Parallel to Grain Strength and Specific Gravity for Small-sized Yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.) Specimens

Mettanurak, Thammarat 23 September 2008 (has links)
Several researchers have concluded that there is little or no relationship between specific gravity and ring width or growth rate in yellow-poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.). Because most mechanical properties of wood are also closely related to specific gravity, it would thus be of interest to learn how minimum suppression and maximum release years' evidence that can be extracted from radial growth patterns based on a modified radial growth averaging (RGA) technique's influence the compression parallel to grain strength and specific gravity of wood. This study is designed to evaluate the effects of growth suppression and release on ultimate crushing stress and specific gravity for small-sized yellow-poplar specimens. Additionally, the relationship between specific gravity and ultimate crushing stress is investigated. Twenty-three yellow-poplar cores were examined for their growth ring widths. Minimum suppression and maximum release years were identified based on the modified RGA criteria method. From each increment core, three 1 Ã 1 Ã 4 mm specimens from both minimum suppression and maximum release years were tested for their ultimate crushing stresses using a micro-mechanical test system. The specific gravity of each specimen was also recorded. These data were analyzed using a paired samples t test and a simple linear regression. The results indicate that the mean ultimate crushing stress and specific gravity of maximum release years were significantly higher than that of minimum suppression years. Furthermore, the ultimate crushing stress was linearly related to the specific gravity of the specimens. / Master of Science
