Sin egen hälsas smed : Idéer, initiativ och organisationer inom svensk motionsidrott 1945–1981 / The Maker of His Own Health : Ideas, Initiatives, and Organizations within Swedish Sports for All Between 1945 and 1981

Bolling, Hans January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation studies the spread of sports for all in Sweden during the years 1945 to 1981. The purposes of the dissertation are twofold: in part to survey the forms of physical activities which were launched as sports for all after 1945, in part to answer the question: Why have almost all voluntarily organized sports in Sweden been part of one organization since the 1970s? In order to handle the diversities of activities that can fall within the concept of sport, two principal abstractions of the concept are used: one rigorous and one flexible. Which definition one uses influences how physical activities are organized in a society. Earlier research into the history of the Swedish sports movement has concluded that it has had a relatively high degree of autonomy in relation to the state. This finding is questioned in this dissertation. Sveriges Riksidrottsförbund (RF) was the largest Swedish sports organization throughout the 20th century and at same time the organization the government relied on to develop sports policies and distribute the financial contribution from the state to the sports movement. This means that RF has played two roles, as an umbrella organization within the Swedish sports movement and as leader of the organizations within the Swedish sports movement, popular movement and semi-public authority. The dissertation shows that the two roles, that RF played, have caused conflicts of interest within the organization. That is made plain when one studies the spread of sports for all. Most members of the organization just wanted to practise different sports and were not interested in the leading organization’s desire to promote a great many different kinds of physical acitivites according to a flexible concept of sport. These members were not interested in strengthening the organization’s leading position within sports. There are not many conceptions that are so universally and uncritically accepted as the conception of the connection between physical activity and health. Sports for all came to age in a society where more and more people were told to use part of their leisure time to take part in physical activities. A societal consensus prevailed that the population’s health was on the decline due to the increased standard of living, which was creating an inactive and unhealthy population. This has meant that sports for all have been an asset of power for the sports organizations and that they have fought for authority and control over sports for all; a struggle fought over the language and thoughts as much as over sport activities. Since 1945 large campaigns to get the population to become more physically active irrespective of physical ability have been common.

Eskilstuna GUIF : Idrottsrörelsen med en nykterhetsgrund / Eskilstuna GUIF : The sports movement with a sobriety foundation

Pasha, Mohannad January 2024 (has links)
The study is about Eskilstuna GUIF, which has a background within the temperance movement IOGT between the years 1900–1940. The purpose of this study is to shed light on how GUIF went from being an association with a sobriety ideal to becoming a sports association. The temperance movement lost many members during the 20th century when the law to ban alcoholic beverages did not pass in 1922. This resulted in the sports movement becoming larger and the GUIF joined the executive board. The source material for this study consists of board reports and annual reports from GUIF's section. This gives the study an overall understanding for the reader to get an overall picture for the reader. The method selected for this study has been a narrative method as it has the function of deciphering GUIF's annual reports and board reports. The selected method fitted in very well in this type of research as the selected material for this study is in the form of stories. This results in the stories fulfilling a function in that it raises different perspectives. The selected theories for this study are movement entrepreneur and movement ideology. The purpose of these theories is to examine how the GUIF went from being a normal sobriety association to starting to bet on handball. The results of this study showed that Eskilstuna GUIF, which started as a sobriety association but did sports on the side, changed. GUIF offers sports as it can lead to more people being able to do sports and stay away from alcohol. This was during the heyday of the temperance movement but in 1922 there was a referendum to remove alcoholic beverages. This referendum did not go the way of the temperance movement, which resulted in the temperance movement losing many members and the sports movement becoming big in the country instead. This resulted in sports becoming the priority within the association. The young people began to get more involved in sports and were not interested in lodge matters. This results in handball becoming the biggest sport in the association over time.

Utvecklingen mot en skolidrott för unga av unga : En kvalitativ textanalys av Svenska skolidrottsförbundets utveckling mot ett elevlett förbund / The evolution towards school sports for students by students : A qualitative text analysis of the Swedish school sports associations’ evolution towards being student led

Möller, Ludvig January 2024 (has links)
During the beginning of the 20th century, the Swedish School Sports Association was started with the goal of developing sports for students in Swedish schools. The association arose as part of the sports movement in Sweden and is a committee of the National Sports Confederation. During the first half of the 20th century, the Swedish Sports Association functioned like any other sports association, but with students as the focus group. In connection with their 50th anniversary, 1966, the Swedish School Sports Association invited students to their association's board. This became a turning point for the Swedish School Sports Association and what kind of association they have become in today. In modern times, the Swedish School Sports Association is an organization that works to teach young people to lead and take responsibility through democratic leadership, an organization for young people, led by young people. In this essay, the aim is to examine how the Swedish School Sports Association's development into a association led by students and young people began and developed. To analyze this development, this essay uses a qualitative text analysis as its method to analyze the Swedish School Sports Association's own archive material in the form of the member magazine Final, Activity Reports and campaign protocols between the years 1966–1981. Robert Putnam's theory of social capital which defines how an organization's social capital can be valued through "civic virtue" is used to value and develop a functioning democracy within a group. Putnam's theory will be used to visualize how this development of the Swedish School Sports Association has changed the organization's social capital with a focus on the students' integration. The essay asks three questions that aim to answer how students are engaged and involved in the organization of the Swedish School Sports Association and how this has developed democratic values within the association. With the aim of investigating students involvment within the organization, these questions will shape the structure of the inquiry and focus the reading of the archival material. The essay comes to the conclusion of how the development of the Swedish School Sports Association has gone over 15 years, from an organization with a low social capital where the students were only participants in the physical activities, to an organization with high social capital where the students are involved in everything from the physical activities to participation on the board. The survey also shows how unique this development has been during the latter half of the 20th century when placed in a larger societal and international perspective. A unique development for Swedish sports where the Swedish School Sports Association is one of the earliest to let students participate and lead. At the same time as it is an opposite development from American sports that is developing.
