As a designer and educator, I am continuously gathering more resources for personal knowledge and to share with my students. Yet there is currently a lack of literature when it comes to design pedagogy for all design areas, specifically for high school aged students. How can we teach theatrical design in a tactful and meaningful way to high school students throughout the United States? Steps of Theatrical Design: A Resource for Activating Educators to Teach Design in High Schools, is for educators to learn about the process of design and spread that knowledge to their students. This thesis will act as an academic resource to guide educators towards the best methods of teaching theatrical design.
I argue design should be a much more critical piece of the curriculum than it is currently being presented in most high schools around the country. Through design, students gain many valuable skills such as: critical thinking, creative expression, emotional intelligence, collaboration, and troubleshooting. I have found the best way to teach design is to practice design. This thesis is broken up into chapters that mirror the steps of the design process. Chapter One (Step One) will cover script analysis and critical thinking, Chapter Two (Step Two) will explore different types of conceptual research, Chapter Three (Step Three) asks readers to apply various influential "isms" from history of 20th Century Design, Chapter Four (Step Four) defines style and aesthetic for design and Chapter Five (Step Five) will cover designer deliverables and design meetings. As a bonus for educators, the Appendix provides assignments that can be paired with each chapter to activate the theories presented.

Master of Science / Department of Civil Engineering / Hani G. Melhem / The objective of this research is to use structure ambient random vibration response to detect damage level and location. The use of ambient vibration is advantageous because excitation is caused by service conditions such as normal vehicle traffic on a highway bridge, train passage on a railroad bridge, or wind loads on a tall building. This eliminates the need to apply a special impact or dynamic load, or interrupt traffic on a bridge in regular service.
This research developed an approach in which free vibration of a structure is extracted from the response of this structure to a random excitation in the time domain (acceleration versus time) by averaging out the random component of the response. The result is the free vibration that includes all modes based on the sampling rate on time. Then this free vibration is transferred to the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Variations in frequency response are a function of structural stiffness and member end-conditions. Such variations are used as a measure to identify the change in the structural dynamic properties, and ultimately detect damage.
A physical model consisting of a 20 × 20 × 1670 -mm long steel square tube was used to validate this approach. The beam was tested under difference supports conditions varying from a single- to three-span continuous configuration. Random excitation was applied to the beam, and the dynamic response was measured by an accelerometer placed at various locations on the span. A numerical model was constructed in ABAQUS and the dynamic response was obtained from the finite element model subjected to similar excitation as in the physical model. Numerical results were correlated against results from the physical model, and comparison was made between the different span/support configurations. A subsequent step would be to induce damage that simulates loss of stiffness or cracking condition of the beam cross section, and that would be reflected as a change in the frequency and other dynamic properties of the structure.
The approach achieved good results for a structure with a limited number of degrees of freedom. Further research is needed for structures with a larger number of degrees of freedom and structures with damage in symmetrical locations relative to the accelerometer position.

In order to assist risk managers, this dissertation proposes a structured approach to the management of reputational risks, which would ensure that the impact on the reputation of the company is minimised. The proposed approach was collated and deduced from the actions taken by companies that have suffered attacks against their reputations, but have successfully mitigated the consequences and minimised the damage to their reputations. Specific South African legislative requirements are also taken into account. However, there are many multiple process steps in industry process. In this article, we propose adaptive control charts to monitor two dependent process steps, and their average time to signal (ATS) is calculated by Markov chain approach to measure the performance of these proposed control charts. It has been shown that the performance of the adaptive sampling interval (ASI) control charts in detecting small and moderate shifts in process means is better than the fixed sampling interval control charts, especially for small shifts, and the proposed adaptive sample size and sampling interval (ASSI) control charts have better performance in detecting very small shifts in process means than the fixed sample size and sampling interval control charts and the adaptive sample size control charts.

Interactions de la capside de lentivirus de primates avec les facteurs cellulaires de l’hôte / Interactions between primate lentiviral capsids and heterologous cellular host factorsInacio Mamede, Joao Filipe 17 December 2012 (has links)
Depuis la découverte du virus de l'Immunodéficience humaine, un lentivirus, comme agent pathogène responsable de l'épidémie du SIDA en 1983, beaucoup de progrès sur le sujet ont été réalisés. Il existe deux types de virus différents pouvant infecter l'Homme, le HIV-1 et le HIV-2. Ces deux virus se regroupent en différents groupes et sous-types qui témoignent d'une grande diversité inter et intra individus (notions de quasi-espèces). La découverte de lentivirus infectant naturellement au moins quarante-cinq espèces de primates en Afrique sub-saharienne, a permis un enrichissement des connaissances sur les origines des épidémies lentivirales humaines. Aujourd'hui , il est clairement admis que l'origine des épidémies d'HIV-1 et HIV-2 sont le résultat de transmissions zoonotiques de virus de chimpanzés/gorilles et de mangabeys enfumées, respectivement. La mise en évidence de nombreux SIV circulant chez ces primates non-humains indique bien le risque potentiel de nouvelles zoonoses dans la population humaine exposée, cependant, il peut paraître surprenant que jusqu'à maintenant, deux lignées lentivirales seulement ont été capables de franchir cette barrière d'espèce. Pour pouvoir se répliquer dans les cellules d'un nouvel hôte, un lentivirus doit pouvoir contrecarrer les différents facteurs de restriction exprimés par les cellules cibles tout en exploitant au maximum la machinerie cellulaire. La famille de protéines TRIM5, APOBEC3 et les protéines Tetherin/Bst2 et SAMHD1 sont capables de bloquer une infection rétrovirale. Dans ce travail, le rôle des protéines TRIM5 a été étudié ainsi que celui d'autres protéines interagissant avec des capsides rétrovirales, dans un contexte de transmission inter-espèces de lentivirus de primates. L'étude de TRIM5α humain a montré que cette protéine n'était capable de bloquer aucune des infections par les lentivirus primates testés dans cette étude, ni par les autres SIV. Nous avons pu mettre en évidence que la dépendance de la liaison à la Cyclophiline A pour l'infection des différents SIV était variable en fonction de la capside testée. Ainsi, si cette interaction est largement répandue parmi les différentes lignées de SIV, elle n'est toutefois pas universelle. La sensibilité des SIV à la déplétion de nucléoporines qui sont connues pour affecter l'infection par HIV-1, était également variable pour différents SIV, et la même diversité a été observée concernant les déplétions de RanBP2 et Nup153. De plus, nous avons découvert une capside de SIV soumise à une forte restriction de son infection dans les cellules humaines, ce phénotype a été nommé Ref2.Il a été suggéré qu'il existait une possible corrélation entre des variations de la capside de HIV-2 et la progression vers le SIDA, nous avons donc élaboré une étude afin de déterminer si les protéines TRIM5 étaient impliquées dans ce phénotype. La conclusion est que TRIM5α humaine ne restreint fortement aucune des capsides de HIV-2 testées provenant d'une cohorte d'individus à “progression rapide“ ou “lente“ vers le SIDA. Cependant nous avons observé une capacité d'infection qui corrélait avec la pathogénicité. Il est intéressant de noter que toutes les capsides d'HIV-2 testées étaient dépendantes de la présence de Cyclophiline A pour leur infection. Toutes ces capsides étaient sensibles à la déplétion de RanBP2, et l'interaction est très probablement médiée par le motif C-ter de RanBP2 qui a une forte homologie avec la Cyclophiline A. En conclusion, il est très probable que des SIV infectant naturellement des singes puissent utiliser les mêmes protéines que HIV-1, pour un éventuel passage inter-espèces. TRIM5α ne semble pas être une barrière efficace aux différents SIV, et l'interaction avec la Cyclophiline A est probablement très conservée par les lentivirus primates / Ever since HIV has been discovered to be the pathogenic agent that causes AIDS in 1983, much progress has been made in the field. Two different viruses are now known to infect humans, HIV-1 and HIV-2. These two distinct viruses have many sub-types and clades representing a high diversity inter and intra-individuals (quasi-species). The finding of HIV simian counterparts, the Simian Immunodeficiency Viruses (SIVs), has broadened the knowledge of primate lentiviruses and to date forty-five species of non-human primates are known to be infected with SIVs in sub-saharan Africa. It is now clear that HIV-1 and HIV-2 epidemics are the result of zoonosis from chimpanzees/gorillas and sooty mangabeys, respectively. With such a big diversity of SIVs in the wild and a frequent contact of SIV infected monkey species with humans, it is interesting that so far, only two lineages breached the species barrier and infected human populations. To be able to correctly infect a cell, a lentivirus has to overcome the installed cellular barriers known as restriction factors while at the same time correctly exploiting the established host cellular machinery. Proteins such as TRIM5, APOBEC3, Tetherin/Bst2, SAMHD1 are able to restrict retroviral infections in certain conditions. In this thesis, it has been evaluated the role of TRIM5 proteins and other capsid interacting proteins with a scope to the eventuality of a cross-species transmission infection. The results showed that human TRIM5alpha does not restrict any of the primate lentiviruses tested, and so far, no primate lentivirus is known to be restricted by it. Cyclophilin A binding and dependence is variable depending on the SIV capsid; this interaction is widespread among the primate lentiviruses phylogenetic tree but not a universal phenotype. Different capsids from SIVs have been tested for the sensitivity to the depletion of nucleoporins that are known to be used by HIV-1 in its infection; it has been concluded that the same diversity applies to the interaction with RanBP2 and Nup153. Additionally, we identified a SIV capsid that is highly restricted in human cells; this phenotype was called Ref2. With the report of a possible correlation between HIV-2 capsid variations and different levels of progression to AIDS, we devised a study aiming to identify if TRIM5 proteins were involved in this phenotype. We concluded that human TRIM5alpha does not restrict any HIV-2 capsid obtained from a HIV-2 cohort, in which individuals were presenting different levels of progression to AIDS. However, we observed a different viral fitness that correlated with pathogenicity. Moreover, Cyclophilin A dependence seems ubiquitous among all of the tested HIV-2 capsids. All of these capsids are sensitive to RanBP2 depletion and the interaction is much likely mediated by RanBP2's C-terminal motif that shares a high homology with Cyclophilin A. Summing up, it is much likely that some SIVs that still circulate in the wild can hijack the same specific cellular co-factors as HIV-1 to produce a new epidemic in humans. TRIM5α does not seem to be a potent barrier to an eventual cross-species transmission from lower primates to humans, and Cyclophilin A interaction seems to play a major role to the infection of some SIVs.

Production d'hydrogène par l'oxydation partielle catalytique du propane / Hydrogen production by the catalytic partial oxidation of propaneHognon, Céline 15 October 2012 (has links)
L'hydrogène est envisagé comme vecteur énergétique pour le futur. En effet, son utilisation par oxydation dans les piles à combustible ne produit que de la vapeur d'eau et permet la production d'électricité et de chaleur. L'oxydation partielle des hydrocarbures, réaction exothermique, peut être une alternative ou un complément au vaporeformage (endothermique) pour la génération d'hydrogène. L'intérêt du propane, par rapport au méthane, est qu'il se liquéfie à une pression relativement faible. L'objectif de ce travail est l'étude cinétique de l'oxydation partielle catalytique du propane. C'est une réaction complexe : son mécanisme comporte des réactions catalytiques de surface couplées à des réactions en phase gazeuse par l'intermédiaire de radicaux. La réaction a été étudiée dans un réacteur auto-agité catalytique. Dans un premier temps une étude expérimentale a été réalisée sans catalyseur. Un mécanisme homogène a pu ainsi être validé. Ensuite, cette même réaction a été étudiée en présence de pastilles d'oxyde de cérium. Un mécanisme hétérogène a été écrit en utilisant le formalisme d'Eley-Rideal et celui de Langmuir-Hinshelwood. Les données cinétiques ont été estimées selon une méthode originale basée sur la théorie de Benson. En comparant les résultats expérimentaux et ceux issus de la simulation (effectués avec Chemkin®/Chemkin Surface®), un mécanisme hétéro-homogène a été validé sur un large domaine de conditions opératoires / Hydrogen is proposed as an energy vector for the future. Indeed, its energetic use by oxidation in fuel cells produces water vapor only. The partial oxidation of hydrocarbons, an exothermic reaction, can be an alternative or a complement to the steam cracking (endothermic) for hydrogen generation. Propane can be an interesting hydrocarbon for hydrogen production since it can be easily stored in liquid phase and distributed. The aim of this work is the kinetic study of the catalytic partial oxidation of propane. The reaction is complex: catalytic reactions are coupled to reactions in gas phase by the intermediary of radicals. The reaction was studied in a catalytic jet stirred reactor. At first, an experimental study was carried out without a catalyst. A homogeneous mechanism could be validated. Afterwards, this same reaction has been studied in presence of cerium oxide pellets. A heterogeneous mechanism was written using the formalism of Eley-Rideal and that of Langmuir-Hinshelwood. The kinetics parameters are estimated by methods derivated from Benson's techniques. Comparing experimental results and those from the simulation (carried out by Chemkin®/Chemkin Surface®), a hetero-homogeneous mechanism was validated in our experimental conditions

Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment / This dissertation investigates the use of digital modeling methods for selected medical
applications. The digital methods include the design of a cranial implant, auricular
prosthesis and the duplication of an oral prosthesis. The digital process includes
imaging, image processing, design and fabrication steps. Three types of imaging used
are contact and non-contact measurement systems and CT scanning. The investigation
uses a Phantom haptic device for digital design. The implants and prostheses are
fabricated using a Thermojet printer and investment casting. Traditional and digital
processes are compared using four case studies on selected criteria. The conclusions
of the investigation are that a digital process can be used and is equal to or better than
traditional methods in prosthesis and implant design.
