Moksleivių rengimo santuokai galimybės bendrojo lavinimo mokykloje / The possibility of student‘s preparation for marriage in secondary school

Lietuvoje vis dažniau tenka išgirsti grėsmingai augančius skyrybų skaičius, taip pat drauge gyvenančių bet nesituokiančių porų skaičių, aktyvų paauglių lytinį gyvenimą bei kitas problemas. Galima daryti prielaidą, kad tokią situaciją lemia menka žmonių moralę, gausiai paplitęs laisvamaniškas požiūris. Problema: Rengimas santuokai ir dorovinis – moralinis ugdymas šeimose bei visuomenėje nepakankamas. Pagrindiniai šio ugdymo trūkumo požymiai gausios skyrybos, kohabitacinės poros, anksti pradedamas paauglių lytinis gyvenimas, jaunuolių nesugebėjimas sukurti tvirtos santuokos. Darbo objektas. Rengimo santuokai galimybės. Darbo tikslas. Atskleisti mokinių rengimo santuokai galimybes bendrojo lavinimo mokykloje. Darbo uždaviniai: 1. Apibūdinti santuokos sampratą; 2. Išgryninti rengimo santuokai principus; 3. Aprašyti šeimos ir mokyklos vaidmenį ruošiant jaunimą santuokai; 4. Atskleisti rengimo santuokai galimybes bendrojo lavinimo mokykloje. Tyrimo metodologija. Darbe remtasi krikščioniškąja antropologija, grindžiančia žmogaus kūniškojo ir dvasinio pradų nedalomumą, taip pat S. Šalkauskio lytinio ugdymo teorija. Tyrimo metodai: literatūros analizė; kokybinis (individualaus interviu) tyrimas, anketinė apklausa; turinio (content) analizės metodas. Svarbiausios išvados. 1. Santuokos svarbumą pripažįsta valstybė ir Bažnyčia. Santuoką gali sudaryti tik brandūs asmenys, nes santuoka visų pirma yra įsipareigojimas. 2. We can make an assumption that these problems occur from low moral virtues. Problem: the preparation for marriage and moral education is not sufficient. The main prove of this problem is increasing number of divorces, incapability to create a strong family. The object of the research: the possibility of preparation for marriage. The aim of the research: to reveal the possibility of students’ preparation for marriage in secondary school. The objectives of the research: 1. To define the conception of marriage; 2. To clear the principles of marriage preparation; 3. To describe the role of family and school preparing teenagers to marriage; 4.To reveal the possibility of students’ preparation for marriage in secondary school. The Effect of Menopause on Acid-Base Regulation and the Chemoreflex Control of Breathing during Wakefulness

Acid-base regulation, as reflected by hydrogen ion concentration ([H+]), and the chemoreflex control of breathing were examined in healthy pre- (PRE; n=20) and postmenopausal (POST; n=15) women of a comparable age (45 ± 2.7 vs. 52 ± 1.8 years). [H+] behaviour was examined in both groups at rest and during exercise above the ventilatory threshold using Stewart’s physicochemical approach to acid-base analysis. Ventilatory chemoreflex characteristics were assessed using Duffin’s modified rebreathing protocol that includes 5 min of prior hyperventilation and maintenance of either hyperoxic (150 mmHg) or hypoxic (50 mmHg) iso-oxia. As expected, the ovarian hormones progesterone ([P4]) and estrogen ([E2]) were significantly lower in the POST group. [H+] was unaffected by menopausal status at rest or during exercise. At rest the POST group exhibited significantly higher PaCO2 and [SID] values relative to the PRE group. In general, the acidifying effects of increased PaCO2 were offset by the alkalizing effect of increases in [SID] (or vice versa) in the POST group such that [H+] did not differ between PRE and POST groups. The central ventilatory chemoreflex also differed between groups with the POST group exhibiting a significantly higher threshold and a lower sensitivity in the response to CO2 relative to the PRE group. [P4] was found to partially account for the significant group differences in acid-base and central ventilatory chemoreflex control characteristics supporting the role of [P4] as an important determinant of acid-base status and the chemical control of ventilation in healthy women. Polly v. Lasselle : slavery in early Indiana

This research presents a comprehensive narrative of the development of slavery in early Indiana history. It chronicles the evolution from a French system of slavery to one influenced by Virginian legal code. In exploring the nature of the practiced slavery and the obstacles to slavery’s implementation, the evidence demonstrates that while Indiana did practice slavery, the state was never at risk of developing a plantation-style slave society. The 1820 Indiana Supreme Court case Polly v. Lasselle, which officially ended any legal form of slavery in the state, exemplifies the evolution of slavery and the constantly changing power relationship between owner and slave. By means of previously unused primary sources, this thesis creates a new account of the court case and places it within the context of Indiana’s slavery history. / Department of History

The Multiconfiguration Time Dependent Hartree-Fock Method for Cylindrical Systems

Many-body quantum dynamics is a challenging problem that has induced the development of many different computational techniques. One powerful technique is the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) method. This method allows proper consideration of electronic correlation with much less computational overhead compared to other similar methods. In this work, we present our implementation of the MCTDHF method on a non-uniform cylindrical grid. With the one-body limit of our code, we studied the controversial topic of tunneling delay, and showed that our results agree with one recent experiment while disagreeing with another. Using the fully correlated version of the code, we demonstrated the ability of MCTDHF to address correlation by calculating the ground state ionization energies of a few strongly correlated systems.

What does it take for organizations to change themselves? The influences on the internal dynamics of organizational routines undergoing planned change

Accomplishing desired benefits from investments in planned change is problematical for organizations, their leaders and the change agents charged with delivery. This is despite a well-developed literature, replete with advice on how change should be achieved. Examination of this literature shows the primary focus on change agents and their practices. This research widens the focus by observing the influence of change agents, change recipients and line managers on organizational routines undergoing planned change. It examines the interplay between stability and change in organizational routines, adopting a social practice perspective, and the routine intended to change as the unit of analysis (Feldman and Pentland, 2003, 2005). The research builds on claims that to understand the patterns of action within routines requires the internal dynamics – the claimed duality between ostensive (in principle) and performative (in practice) aspects - to be examined. A research method to operationalize the study of this claimed duality was devised following the principles of Strong Structuration (Stones, 2005). This method enabled a unique conceptualization of the study of routine dynamics, focused on planned change from the perspective of multiple, interdependent actors. Two cases of change agents following the advice in the planned change literature were explored. In one case, stability of the routine persisted when change was intended. In the other, change was relatively easy to achieve irrespective of change agent actions. The primary contribution is the demonstration of how the attitudes to change of change recipients, line managers and change agents influence the internal dynamics of routines undergoing planned change. Other contributions pertain to the method of ‘unpacking’ organizational routines and its potential for shaping future practice. This research does not offer new ‘normative’ advice but instead sensitizes planned change practitioners to the level of analysis they need to carry out to ensure that their interventions are suitably designed.

Rallying Around the Party: A Theory of Party Identity Linkage

<p>This dissertation proposes that party identification, as a social identity, fundamentally alters individual processing of and reactions to political information and events. I present a <italic>party identity linkage theory</italic> in which I argue party identity can lead to heightened, specific emotional responses to threatening political competition and biased, polarized perceptions of politicalized objects if the link between self and party is sufficiently strong. Because people are strongly motivated to protect the positive perceptions they have of themselves, they should be motivated to maintain and protect their positive perceptions of groups that are linked to their self-concept through social identities. Furthermore, because people tend to engage in self-serving biases that result in a degree of positive illusions about themselves, especially when the positive self-view is threatened, evaluations of closely linked groups should also be subject to a degree of positive bias, especially when the positive image of the group is threatened. Drawing on both experimental and survey data, I provide evidence that strong partisans are fundamentally different from weak partisans and independents in the degree a party is included in their self-concepts, in their responses to candidates' changed party status, and in their responses to threatening inter-party competition.</p> / Dissertation

Strong-Coupling Quantum Dynamics in a Structured Photonic Band Gap: Enabling On-chip All-optical Computing

In this thesis, we demonstrate a new type of resonant, nonlinear, light-matter interaction facilitated by the unique electromagnetic vacuum density-of-state (DOS) structure of Photonic Band Gap (PBG) materials. Strong light localization inside PBG waveguides allows extremely strong coupling between laser fields and embedded two-level quantum dots (QD). The resulting Mollow splitting is large enough to traverse the precipitous DOS jump created by a waveguide mode cutoff. This allows the QD Bloch vector to sense the non-smoothness of the vacuum structure and evolve in novel ways that are forbidden in free space. These unusual strong-coupling effects are described using a "vacuum structure term" of the Bloch equation, combined with field-dependent relaxation rates experienced by the QD Bloch vector. This leads to alternation between coherent evolution and enhanced relaxation. As a result, dynamic high-contrast switching of QD populations can be realized with a single beam of picosecond pulses. During enhanced relaxation to a slightly inverted steady state at the pulse peak, the Bloch vector rapidly switches from anti-parallel to parallel alignment with the pulse torque vector. This then leads to a highly inverted state through subsequent coherent "adiabatic following" near the pulse tail, providing a robust mechanism for picosecond, femto-Joule all-optical switching. The simultaneous input of a second, weaker (signal) driving beam at a different frequency on top of the stronger (holding) beam enables rich modulation effects and unprecedented coherent control over the QD population. This occurs through resonant coupling of the signal pulse with the Mollow sideband transitions created by the holding pulse, leading to either augmentation or negation of the final QD population achieved by the holding pulse alone. This effect is applied to ultrafast all-optical logic AND, OR and NOT gates in the presence of significant (0.1 THz) nonradiative dephasing and (about 1%) inhomogeneous broadening. Further numerical studies of pulse evolutions inside the proposed devices demonstrate satisfactory population contrast within a PBG waveguide length of about 10 micro meter. These results provide the building blocks for low-power, ultrafast, multi-wavelength channel, on-chip, all-optical computing.
