Water is essential element for human survival but unstainable development practices and short term economic benefits are responsible for water scarcity in many areas around the world. Climate change is aggravating the risk with distribution and water availability. Agriculture is a sector highly dependent on water. The livelihood of a vast population in the world depends on not only agriculture, but also forestry, wetlands and fisheries and land use which, in turn, are strongly influenced by water based ecosystems that depend on monsoon rains. India is a global agricultural powerhouse. It is the world’s largest producer of milk, pulses, and spices as well as the largest area under wheat, rice and cotton. But increasing water scarcity in India is affecting agricultural sector, hence affecting socio- economic conditions of poor Indian farmers. In some pockets of the country, attempts have been made during the last few decades to manage the scarce water resources more efficiently and govern them more wisely, so that agriculture as the main economic backbone of the local communities can be sustainably supported. Ralegan Siddhi is one such outstanding case where the rainwater harvested through local interventions has enabled sustainable development of the entire community. The village stands out as an oasis in the desert. The aim of the study is to understand how water has been governed in Ralegan Siddhi to enable sustainable agriculture and hence sustainable development of the community. Ultimately, the study is foreseen to help improve the farmers’ situation in water scarce areas in India and elsewhere by sharing this study report based on Ralegan Siddhi’s water governance practices with other researchers as well as concerned agencies and actors.

Youth and Staff Perceptions of Modifications Made When Implementing Strong Teens in a Residential Treatment CenterBennion, Melissa Rae 22 June 2020 (has links)
There is compelling evidence that helping adolescents develop certain traits (especially related to resiliency) can mitigate the confounding effects of suicide. Specific demographics of youth appear to have higher rates of suicidal behavior including those with mental health diagnoses and educational disabilities that affect students' academic achievement. We looked at evidence based social and emotional learning programs (SEL) that fostered adaptive coping skills and resilience. We identified Strong Teens (Carrizales-Engelmann, Merrell, Feuerborn, Gueldner, & Tran, 2016) as a program that could be easily administered and adapted into traditional and nontraditional school settings. This study was conducted in a residential treatment center (RTC) for adolescent males. The RTC permitted one of their therapists to implement the Strong Teens over the course of two consecutively run groups. Group 1 included seven boys and Group 2 included four boys. We relied on the therapist's self-assessment of modifications made to the program; the researcher's field notes collected during observations; emails between the therapist and researcher; the researcher's notes taken during conversations between the therapist and researcher; monthly Youth Outcome Questionnaire Self Report (Y-OQ-SR) test scores; youth Strong Teens pre and post test scores; and youth exit surveys conducted in one-one interviews at the conclusion of the Strong Teens lessons. Fidelity of program implementation was measured by the therapist and researcher completing the Strong Teens fidelity checklist (included in the Strong Teens manual). Based on collected data, we make the following recommendations: Adapt the Strong Teens program to increase student participation and receptiveness; carefully consider the size of the group, taking into account the capacity of the group leader to manage the group's behaviors and attend to individual needs; consider conducting groups sessions in settings that help youth feel safe and comfortable--groups held outside may be preferable to groups held inside classrooms; mental health professionals and teachers who lead the Strong Teens lessons may consider learning about a variety of basic therapeutic strategies and how these strategies might fit participants' needs; when evaluating the effectiveness of Strong Teens, carefully gather, consider, and contextualize a variety of data (quantitative and qualitative) from a variety of sources (youth participants, group leaders, and others who interact with the youth); in addition to focusing on teaching information and skills, group leaders must consider motivational strategies; focus initial conversations on why one would use such strategies to benefit oneself--later conversations may expand to include how strategies benefit others.

Social-Emotional Learning in Middle School: A Mixed-Methods Evaluation of the Strong Kids ProgramNeth, Erin Larsen 07 November 2019 (has links)
Strong Kids is a social-emotional curriculum designed to reduce students' externalizing and internalizing symptoms. Strong Kids has shown promise in elementary school, but this was the first study to evaluate the newly updated version of the intervention in a middle school setting. The curriculum was implemented by two general education teachers with students at-risk for emotional and behavioral disorders. A mixed method design was used to evaluate outcomes with eight middle school students. Overall findings suggest that Strong Kids was effective at improving students' social emotional knowledge and internalizing symptoms; however, there were no significant changes in students' externalizing symptoms. Teachers were able to implement the curriculum with fidelity. Teachers and students also found the curriculum to be predominantly positive. Future studies should include a larger sample size, control group, and follow up data points.

Emergent Properties of Plasmonic Systems in the Weak to Strong Coupling Regimes:Rose, Aaron Harold January 2019 (has links)

Naughton / In this dissertation I present studies of plasmonic interactions in different coupling regimes, from zero to strong coupling and approaching ultrastrong coupling. Different physics are manifest in each regime, with different possible applications. The first project uses finite element electromagnetic simulations to model plasmonic waveguides that couple near field light into the far-field for sub-diffraction limited microscopy. Wavelength/32 resolution is shown by minimizing coupling between adjacent waveguiding nanowires, with minimal attenuation over a few microns. The next two projects, by contrast, seek to maximize coupling between plasmons and excitons into the strong coupling regime where the optoelectronic properties are modified and quantum coherent phenomena may be observed. Strong exciton–plasmon coupling in MoS2 is shown experimentally at room temperature and found to be a general phenomenon in other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides using transfer matrix modeling. A semiclassical oscillator model is fit to the experimental data to discover coherent hybridization between the ground and first excited states of MoS2. Enhanced coupling is found at the third excitonic transition, approaching the ultrastrong coupling regime where exotic properties are predicted to emerge, such as ground state virtual photons. Our strong coupling studies motivate further studies of the TMDCs as a platform for coherent quantum physics with possible applications in quantum computing and cryptography. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2019. / Submitted to: Boston College. Strong Black Women, Depression, and the Pentecostal ChurchDavis, Dawn E 01 January 2019 (has links)
Depression is a global health concern and among the top two causes of disability
and disease. African-Americans often seek help from the Black church, but
Pentecostal churches may fail to provide effective support due to doctrinal beliefs.
African-American women with depression struggle due to psychosocial implications
of the diagnosis. This research study used social constructionism and the
biopsychosocial model of health to explore the lived experiences of African-
American women suffering from self-reported depression while attending
Pentecostal churches in the Northeast United States. Fourteen women, ages
20 to 76, participated in this qualitative, phenomenological study. Data obtained
from the semistructured, face-to-face interviewswas analyzed with Moustakas'
modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method. Findings included the following main
themes: the Pentecostal church was ineffective in dealing with depression,
participants drew comfort from personal faith in God, participants emoted
through their behavior, most felt they had to wear a mask, traditional supports
were used to deal with depression, strength was expected of them, they were
blamed by the church for their depression, traumatic experiences were related
to depression, and psychological harm was suffered because of Pentecostal
church membership. Social change implications included the personal
liberation of research participants who shared their experiences. Other
implications include the potential for clergy to adopt more supportive practices
for their members based on these findings and for mental health professionals to
develop treatment options that are more culturally attuned and sensitive.

The Expectation of Emotional Strength and its Impact on African American Women's WeightRivers, NeCole L. 01 January 2015 (has links)
African American (AA) women have the highest rates of obesity and weight-related diseases of any other cultural group in the United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between acceptance of the Strong Black Woman (SBW) cultural construct and the following weight-related health factors: body mass index (BMI), high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes mellitus (DM). The hypothesis was that a positive relationship exists between accepting the SBW persona and weight-related health factors. The theory of womanism was used to guide this study. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 127 AA women to participant in an online survey. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed on the demographics. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the research questions. The affect and regulation subscale from the Strong Black Woman Cultural Construct Scale was used to measure mental and emotional strength. Willingness to ask for help was measured using the General Help Seeking questionnaire original version. The Emotional Eating Scale measured eating behaviors in response to anger, frustration, depression, and depressed mood. The Perceived Stress Scale measured perceived stress. The results of the analyses revealed that mental and emotional strength were significantly related to BMI and high blood pressure. There was no significant relationship found between mental and emotional strength and heart disease, stroke, and DM. This study could provide useful information for future weight management treatment for AA women. Positive social change is implied because understanding weight gain in this population may help to decrease the incidences of obesity and associated weight-related illnesses.

The Intersections of Military Family Culture and Black Family Culture: Challenges and Benefits of Being a Black Daughter in a Military FamilyEvans, Pinkie Irene 09 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Research on military families has increased since the beginning of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; however, the research focuses on military families is general with little specific information on Black families within the military. Given the known general impact of race, this is a critical gap in the research into military families. This qualitative descriptive study explores the life of Black daughters in military families by examining the challenges and benefits of growing up as a Black daughter in a military family. There were three primary research questions asked of the participants about their experiences: 1) What challenges did you experience growing up in a military family; 2) What benefits did you experience growing up in a military family; and, 3) Do you believe that being Black affected the challenges and benefits you experienced? If so, in what way(s)? The participants also answered two additional questions of importance to social workers and health practitioners who work with military families: 1) What advice would you give to social workers who work with military families?; and, 2) What advice would you have for the military to help families address the challenges you have mentioned? The answers to the primary research questions are reviewed through the Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), models of systems theory, mettle, adaptability, and transformability. Consideration of the “Strong Black Woman” perspective is also examined. A look at the roles that women play as well as roles imposed on women by others is explored. Implications for social workers, health practitioners, and schools of social work are discussed, inclusive of military family culture and the importance of cultural competence in considering the intersections of a person’s life: racial identity in addition to military implications. / 2021-10-02
