The State, Conflict and Evolving Politics in the Niger Delta Nigeria

Omeje, Kenneth C. January 2004 (has links)
No / The prime concern by the Nigerian state in the management of the oil conflicts in the Niger Delta has been to maximise oil revenues. What is probably most confounding about this strategy is the evolving tendency to twist and treat every conflict in the Niger Delta, including some episodic 'epi-oil' conflicts abetted or orchestrated by the state itself, as oil conflicts. In other words, there is a tendency on the part of the state to wittingly 'oilify' some apparently extra-oil conflicts. Compared to other regimes before it, the present civilian administration has probably contributed most to the fast-tracking of this evolving phenomenon. This article unravels and analyses the evolving politics of oilification of extra-oil conflicts in the Niger Delta, its underlying rationale and consequences. Oilification, as the study demonstrates, is yet another in the series of dangerous contradictions engendered by the Nigerian state. How this and other dangerous contradictions could possibly be solved is a research conundrum for the relevant cognoscenti of state-society relations and conflicts in Nigeria. But would the Nigerian state take on board any useful and promising solutions materialising from such studies? This is most unlikely in the present conjuncture given the prevailing configuration of interests in the state.

In terms of world literature, this problem has been worked in an original and vigorous way by Ragnar Nurkse in "Problems of capital formation in underdeveloped countries ", by Rostow in "Stages of Economic Development", and Gunnar Myrdal in "Economic Theory and Regions Underdeveloped . These works and authors were not only well received by the national-developmentalist intelligentsia, as strongly influenced the theory of underdevelopment of Celso Furtado. This research has two objectives: 1) identify in the dialogue established between the arguments of Rostow, Nurkse and Myrdal agreement, kept their proper proportions in the work of Furtado (fundamental author in understanding the developmental question of the years 50/60); 2) to analyze how this influence has been received, appropriate and resignified according to perspectives of Furtado in the formulation of development theory for the Brazilian industrial planning.

As informações foram cole / This thesis is the result of the research of Doctorate on the program of Education Postgraduate at "Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos - UNISINOS". The research carries out studies about Work-Education and focuses on the High-technical school and professional education. The general purpose of the research was to discuss the professional education of the technical course, through a review of the concept of professional qualification, considering: the process of professional formation, the learning process which happens during work and the convergence with decurrent requirements from the model of flexible accumulation. Therefore, it was focused the importance of knowing the process of the constitution of the technical professionals competences, which contribute for the ingression and maintenance at the work market. The study is about a Case with qualitative nature on which the subjects are the graduated students from the technical course, at UNED in Sapucaia do Sul (CEFET-RS) during the period of 1999-2004

An Analytical Study of Paradox and Structural Dualism in the Music of Ludwig van Beethoven

Graf, Benjamin 05 1900 (has links)
Beethoven's rich compositional language evokes unique problems that have fueled scholarly dialogue for many years. My analyses focus on two types of paradoxes as central compositional problems in some of Beethoven's symphonic pieces and piano sonatas. My readings of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 27 (Op. 90), Symphony No. 4 (Op. 60), and Symphony No. 8 (Op. 93) explore the nature and significance of paradoxical unresolved six-four chords and their impact on tonal structure. I consider formal-tonal paradoxes in Beethoven's Tempest Sonata (Op. 31, No. 2), Ninth Symphony (Op. 125), and Overture die Weihe des Hauses (Op. 124). Movements that evoke formal-tonal paradoxes retain the structural framework of a paradigmatic interrupted structure, but contain unique voice-leading features that superimpose an undivided structure on top of the "residual" interrupted structure. Carl Schachter's observations about "genuine double meaning" and his arguments about the interplay between design and tonal structure in "Either/Or" establish the foundation for my analytical approach to paradox. Timothy Jackson's reading of Brahms' "Immer leiser word meine Schlummer" (Op. 105, No. 2) and Stephen Slottow's "Von einem Kunstler: Shapes in the Clouds" both clarify the methodology employed here. My interpretation of paradox involves more than just a slight contradiction between two Schenkerian readings; it involves fundamentally opposed readings, that both result from valid, logical lines of analytical reasoning. In my view, paradoxes could be considered a central part of Beethoven's persona and philosophy. Beethoven's romantic endeavors and his relationships with mentors suggest that paradoxes might have been central to his bravura. Furthermore, Beethoven's familiarity with the politics of the French Revolution and Shakespearean literature suggest that paradoxes in some pieces (including the Ninth Symphony) could be metaphorical representations of his ideology. However, I do not attempt to explicitly link specific style features to extra-musical ideas. Modern Schenkerian scholars continue to expand and refine Schenker's formal-tonal models as well as his concept of interruption. In my view, by considering paradox as a focal compositional problem, we can better understand some of the formal-tonal issues and shifting allegiances in Beethoven's music and take another step beyond the rigidity of some paradigmatic formal-tonal prototypes.
