This work retrieves an conception of musical semantics in the work of Vladimír Karbusický. It consists of three parts. The first one focused on Karbusický's works Beethovenův list "An die unsterbliche Geliebte" a jeho hudební dílo [Beehtoven's letter "An die unsterbliche Geliebte" and his musical work] from the year 1969 and Podstata umění [The essence of art] published in the same year, which presents characteristics of four components of arts situated into an quadripolar ontological model of arts. This model is motivated by the structuralism of Jan Mukařovský and by an asemantic nature of musical forms. The poles of this model represent a subject, an object, a material and a society, and create a web of relations between each other. This way they create a field of interaction governed by dynamical and energetic forces. The respective components arise from the relation of a subject to the other poles, and they are divided into semantic and asemantic ones. Among the semantic components we put a picture, an expression and a symbol; the asemantic components are defined by a game and a construction. The present essay undertakes a structuralist analysis of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go, drawing upon the actantial analysis of plot developed by A. J. Greimas, as developed by Louis Hébert. My central claim is that the plot revolves around the protagonist's contradictory desire to find love with her childhood friend Tommy, while at the same time retaining her friendship with another childhood friend, Ruth. The essay suggests that this contradiction contributes to the complex plot where the characters' actantial functions shift frequently. Furthermore, the essay makes a distinction between two different perspectives, namely Kathy's as protagonist, and Kathy's as narrator. This distinction elucidates how narration in Never Let Me Go affects the plot.

Busca-se, na presente tese, à luz do sistema constitucional brasileiro, examinar a tributação na prestação de serviços de infraestrutura. Utiliza-se, para tanto, de uma abordagem estrutural-funcionalista, investigando-se o fenômeno jurídico não apenas sob o seu aspecto formal, mas, de igual modo, sob o aspecto promocional de condutas. A prestação de serviços de infraestrutura é, nessa senda, um serviço de interesse público orientado ao desenvolvimento, alinhando-se, em um Estado Social e Democrático de Direito, com os objetivos fundamentais da República. Reconhecendo-se que a dicotomia público-privado não é critério hábil a delimitar as normas jurídicas, constata-se que a prestação de tais serviços por meio de concessões, parcerias público-privadas e permissões também pode ser alvo da função promocional, que tem nos mecanismos tributários, observados os princípios constitucionais a eles subjacentes, um dos meios para sua implementação. Examina-se, assim, o desenho constitucional de competências, para concluir-se que a imunidade recíproca é aplicável, ao lado dos entes políticos, autárquicos e fundacionais, apenas às empresas públicas e sociedades de economia mista, e não aos entes privados prestadores do serviço de interesse público. Com o exame do aspecto material da hipótese de incidência possível de tributos sobre a receita, renda, lucros e serviços, analisa-se a subsunção dos fatos relacionados à prestação dos serviços de infraestrutura às respectivas normas de incidência tributária. A possibilidade de concessão de medidas de desoneração fiscal na prestação dos serviços relacionados aos setores de infraestrutura também é verificada, sendo necessária, para tanto, a correlação do incentivo fiscal com a finalidade de promoção do desenvolvimento nacional e regional. À vista da análise estrutural-funcionalista empreendida, conclui-se que os mecanismos tributários relacionados à prestação descentralizada dos serviços de infraestrutura podem ser utilizados como instrumentos aptos à promoção do desenvolvimento. / The object of this thesis is to examine taxation on the decentralized provision of infrastructure services in light of Brazilian constitutional system. A structuralist and functionalist approach is, therefore, applied to investigate this legal phenomenon not only from a formal aspect, but also from a promotion of conduct standpoint. The provision of infrastructure services is, from such perspective, a service of public interest oriented towards development and aligned with the fundamental objectives of the Republic. Recognizing that the public-private dichotomy is not qualified to delimit the norms of the legal system, it is seen that the provision of such services by means of concession, publicprivate partnerships and permits can also fall under such promotion function, having in the taxation mechanisms, subject to constitutional principles, one of the means for its implementation. An examination is, therefore, made of the separation of competencies under the Constitution, and the conclusion is that reciprocal immunity is applicable, alongside political bodies, independent state organizations and foundations, only to stateowned entities and state-controlled enterprises, and not to private concerns providing services in the public interest. Through the examination of the triggering event of taxes on income, profit and services, an analysis is made of how facts relating to the provision of infrastructure services are framed within the respective tax levying norms. The possibility of conceding tax relief measures also applies to services in infrastructure sectors, provided that the concession of tax incentives is aimed at promoting national and regional development. Based on a structuralist and functionalist analysis, the conclusion reached is that taxation mechanisms relating to the decentralized provision of infrastructure services are instruments capable of promoting development.

A presente dissertação tem o objetivo apresentar e refletir o modo como a metateoria estruturalista realiza análises filosófico-metacientíficas. Tal empreitada manterá o foco principal na relação entre teoria científica e experimento. Isto nos permitirá o embate com questões cruciais à filosofia da ciência, tais como a impregnação teórica do teste empírico e a distinção teórico/observacional. Tanto no decorrer quanto ao cabo de nossas reflexões ficará claro o avanço promovido pela metateoria estruturalista no que diz respeito à riqueza de análises metacientíficas possibilitadas pelo seu aparato conceitual. / The purpose of this dissertation is to present and reflect on how the structuralist metatheory performs metaphysical-philosophical analysis. This endeavor will maintain the main focus on the relationship between scientific theory and experiment. This will allow us to tackle issues crucial to the philosophy of science, such as the theoretical impregnation of the empirical test and the theoretical /observational distinction. Both in the course and in the end of our reflections will be clear the advance promoted by the structuralist metatheory with respect to the wealth of metascientific analyzes made possible by its conceptual apparatus.

It was an attempt to follow the steps of formation of his concept of symbol, which is central to that period. Decisive for this phase, also called philosophy of symbol, was to put forward the question to other disciplines that played an essential role in the analysis of symbolic language, among which is the structural anthropology of Lévi-Strauss. Thus, the terms - more specific to the dialogue established between Paul Ricoeur and Claude Lévi-Strauss on the analysis of the symbolic language of myth - were defined. Finally, this research provides a better understanding of the opening phase of the Ricoeur s hermeneutics as well as its alignments and divergences with the structuralism of Lévi-Strauss so widespread in the academic field / Este trabalho é resultado de uma análise das obras de Paul Ricoeur, que se encontram no limiar da inserção da hermenêutica em sua filosofia. Procuramos acompanhar as etapas de formação de seu conceito de símbolo, central para este período. Decisiva para esta fase, também chamada de filosofia do símbolo, foi a interpelação de outras disciplinas que se constituíram por meio da análise da linguagem simbólica, entre as quais se encontra a antropologia estrutural de Lévi-Strauss. Dessa forma, definimos os termos mais específicos do diálogo estabelecido entre Paul Ricoeur e Claude Lévi-Strauss sobre a análise da linguagem simbólica do mito. Esta pesquisa nos auxiliou a compreender melhor a fase de abertura da hermenêutica ricoeuriana e suas aproximações e afastamentos com o estruturalismo lévi-straussiano, tão difundido em nosso campo acadêmico

Michel Foucault is a celebrated post-structuralist theorist that has helped shape gender and sexual theory. In A History of Sexuality Volume 1 Foucault dismantles many longstanding sexual traditions and morals by exposing them as societal constructs. According to Foucault, anonymous yet fully invasive power sources have shaped and continue to shape sexual culture and more importantly, individual beliefs about sexuality. However, Foucault's obsession with the influence of power limits his sexual theory in three particular ways. First, he disregards the female sexual experience; second, he undermines individual agency; and third, he undermines the innate desire for love and family. The first half of the paper focuses on his dismissal of the female experience and individual agency. This section of the thesis relies heavily on other feminist scholars, social studies, and the work of historians. The second half of the paper focuses on the human desire for love and family and looks to dystopian literature to help critique Foucault. Dystopian literature has often been paired with modern cultural criticism, including psychoanalysis and post-strucutralism as both act as critiques of the permeating effects of societal control at a community and individual level. However, even dystopian literature leaves some room for individual agency and explores the innate desire for love and family.

Machinist in the Snow is a narrative long poem, much like a novel in verse that deals with the loss of memory and environmental rebirth. In the book, the narrator exiles himself into a frozen nature and attempts to return the frozen wasteland into its former, flourishing environment. The poems take on the memoric form of memory in a wide range of poetic forms from the traditional sonnet, haiku, or villanelle, to a scattered projective verse. In the center of these poems is an attempt to mimic the mind in the way that it shifts, in its moments of clarity, and in its attempt to dissect and understand the surrounding realities. Through logic patterning, deep image, and introspection, these poems are meant to give insight into what it means to be human in the digital age and to highlight the dwindling connection to the pastoral that is so deeply rooted in American society.

In this thesis I argue forin re structuralism in the philosophy of mathematics. In the first chapters of the thesis I argue that there is a genuine epistemic access problem for Platonism, that the semantic challenge to nominalism may be met by paraphrase strategies, and that nominalizations of scientific theories have had adequate success to blunt the force of the indispensability argument for Platonism. In the second part of the thesis I discuss the development of logicism and structuralism as methodologies in the history of mathematics. The goal of this historical investigation is to lay the groundwork for distinguishing between the philosophical analysis of the content of mathematics and the analysis of the breadth and depth of results in mathematics. My central contention is that the notion of logical structure provides a context for the latter not the former. In turn, this contention leads to a rejection of ante rem structuralism in favor of in re structuralism. In the concluding part of the dissertation the philosophy of mathematical structures developed and defended in the preceding chapters is applied to the philosophy of science.
