This dissertation looks at some of the most famous structures by talented and cryptic American architect Louis Sullivan (1856-1924) for fusions of Aesthetic Movement surfaces and two-part Classical Monumentality. For architects, the Aesthetic Movement allowed for a greater amount of freedom when it came to sources, massing, and ornament, which resulted in the creation of more highly textured surfaces than ever before. Under raking light, this texture produces some scintillating effects. Sullivan used this textural freedom throughout his career, creating some surfaces that sparkle. It will also be demonstrated that Sullivan changed his drawing style to better articulate his textural visions to others. The second way in which this dissertation looks at Sullivan’s architecture is through the lens of Classical monumentality, specifically that used in Donato Bramante’s Palazzo Caprini (constructed ca. 1512), which is better known today as the House of Raphael. Composed of a basement surmounted by a major order, Bramante’s venerable two-part pattern spawned legions of descendants. This dissertation will demonstrate that Sullivan applied lessons from derivatives of this structure’s facade to a range of building types. Visual analysis of select building facades will demonstrate that Sullivan kept combining these two themes throughout his career.

This thesis reappraises the significance of Alexander Martin Sullivan, the Irish constitutional nationalist and owner-editor of the Nation, by examining his role in carrying Young Ireland’s moderate nationalist program through the lull in popular politics between the 1840s and 1870s. Sullivan has been routinely marginalized as an important historical figure in post-Famine popular politics, yet his campaign of propping up nationalist heroes and attempts at forming nationalist organizations, primarily through the Nation, ultimately helped to revitalize nationalist politics. Although his efforts were often threatened, and even thwarted at times, by James Stephens and other advanced nationalists, Sullivan managed to preserve constitutional nationalism until the emergence of Isaac Butt as leader of the home rule movement in the 1870s. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Master of Music / Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance / Patricia Thompson / The purpose of this graduate report is to explore the influential stories and historical aspects behind the composition of selected works from the soprano repertoire. This document is completed in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Music degree in vocal performance. The recital was held on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at seven-thirty o’clock in the evening at the First Presbyterian Church, located on 801 Leavenworth Street in Manhattan, KS. Works for this recital were chosen to create a contrasting and unique program to span the soprano repertoire from the Baroque era to late twentieth century, and to display the histories and influences of these compositions. Les filles de Cadix by Léo Delibes Each chapter of this document is dedicated to a specific work from the program, and contains the following: 1) biographical information on the composer, 2) historical information and influences on the composition as well as from its grander counterpart if the selection is from a larger work, and 3) a textual and musical analysis of the selection.

In June and July of 1980 a 12 station microseismic detection network was established over a 40 km² area about the Sullivan Mine, Kimberley, B.C. for the purpose of using hypocentre locations of mining induced earthquakes to delineate the position of fault planes in 3-dimensions. During the experiment 1551 microseismic events were recorded by 2 or more digital seismographs, but only 366 events were large enough to be recorded by 4 or more stations. A regional velocity of 5.30 kms⁻¹ was determined from calibration explosions and a 3-dimensional least squares type location program was used. Based on explosions of known location within the mine a location accuracy of 180 m in epicentral position and 500 m in focal depth was attained. Recorded microseismic activity occurred entirely within the mine bounds, centered on the active working areas. An extremely close relationship between level of microseismic activity and mining cycles was observed. The seismic array at the Sullivan Mine was found to be unsuitable for use as a geologic mapping tool, partly because of the lack of resolution. However several interesting features of the induced microseismicity have become apparent: (i) Influence of mining activity at the Sullivan is extremely localized, with microearthquake activity confined to the working areas. (ii) The correlation between mine activity and recorded microseismic activity was extremely high; the majority of microearthquakes, in particular the smaller events, occurred in the first ten minutes after large mine blasts. These appear to be cavity relaxation events. (iii) There appears to be an association between the epicentral locations and the edges of cave areas. The only activity which may be associated with faults occurs when they are quite proximal to the cave edges; that is where tensional stresses in the hanging wall are localized along these pre-existing planes of weakness. (iv) It is believed that regional stress conditions are unsuitable to allow fault reactivation below the mine. Geologic evidence suggests' that the regional stress in the vicinity of the Sullivan is either neutral or extensional, in which case fault reactivation below the mine will be suppressed by the load removal caused by mining. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Graduate
