Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) have the ability to significantly reduce the energy required to heat and cool buildings. Historically, deployment of GSHP's in the cooling-dominated Texas and Southwest region has been significantly less than in other regions of the United States. The long term technical and economic viability of GSHPs in arid regions such as Texas has been questioned due to failures of ground loop heat pump systems by early adopters. A proposed solution is to include a supplemental heat rejection (SHR) device to help offset the unbalanced ground loads.
An integrated building load-ground source heat pump model is developed in this thesis and is designed to be a test bed for potential SHR devices. The model consists of discrete component models that can be mixed and matched to represent various types of buildings and ground source heat pumps. One of the unique features of the integrated model is the use of the Simulink/Matlab environment. This environment allows the user to develop component models that take advantage of the built-in functionality of Matlab and Simulink. Another unique feature is the full coupling of the building load, heat pump, and ground loop at every time step. The building load, heat pump, and ground loop models were chosen to allow for short time step simulations, which allows for a range of dynamic response times to be modeled and for different heat pump/SHR control methods to be explored. The integrated model can be used on any computer that has the Matlab and Simulink software.
The building load model used, called HAMBASE, can model both residential and commercial buildings. HAMBASE was validated using the ASHRAE 140-2007 standard. The heat pump model uses readily available data provided by GSHP manufacturers to accurately model operation across a wide range of input conditions. The vertical borehole ground loop model, developed at Oklahoma State University, is based on Eskillson's g-function model, but included a one-dimensional numerical model to calculate the short term thermal response of the borehole and ground. The ground loop model utilizes GLHEPRO, a ground loop sizing and simulation tool, to create the required parameter files.
Using the integrated building load-ground source heat pump model, a model of a single family house with a ground source heat pump was developed. The house model was validated by the results from eQuest and GELHPRO. A series of sensitivity studies were completed to determine dominant factors affecting the use of GSHPs in Texas and the Southwest regions of the United States. The results show that the life of a vertical borehole can be significantly extended/cut short if the ground parameters are properly/not properly designed prior to ground loop sizing. / text

Supplemental heat rejection in ground source heat pumps for residential houses in Texas and other semi-arid regionsBalasubramanian, Siddharth 08 February 2012 (has links)
Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are efficient alternatives to air source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling for conditioned buildings. GSHPs are widely deployed in the midwest and eastern regions of the United States but less so in Texas and the southwest regions whose climates are described as being semi-arid. In these semi-arid regions, building loads are typically cooling dominated so the unbalance in energy loads to the ground, coupled with less conductive soil, cause the ground temperature to increase over time if the ground loop is not properly sized. To address this ground heating problem especially in commercial building applications, GSHPs are coupled with supplemental heat recovery/rejection (SHR) systems that remove heat from the water before it is circulated back into the ground loops. These hybrid ground source heat pump systems are designed to reduce ground heating and to lower the initial costs by requiring less number of or shallower boreholes to be drilled.
This thesis provides detailed analyses of different SHR systems coupled to GSHPs specifically for residential buildings. The systems are analyzed and sized for a 2100 ft2 residential house, using Austin, Texas weather data and ground conditions. The SHR systems investigated are described by two heat rejection strategies: 1) reject heat directly from the water before it enters the ground loops and 2) reject heat from the refrigerant loop of the vapor compression cycle (VCC) of the heat pump so less heat is transferred to the water loop at the condenser of the VCC.
The SHR systems analyzed in this thesis are cooling towers, optimized VCC, expanded desuperheaters and thermosyphons. The cooling towers focus on the direct heat rejection from the water loop. The VCC, desuperheater, and thermosyphon systems focus on minimizing the amount of heat rejected by the VCC refrigerant to the water loop. In each case, a detailed description of the model is presented, a parametric analysis is provided to determine the amounts of heat that can be rejected from the water loop for various cases of operation, and the practical feasibility of implementation is discussed. An economic analysis is also provided to determine the cost effectiveness of each method. / text

Performance-based Design of RC Coupled Wall High-rise Buildings with Viscoelastic Coupling DampersMacKay-Lyons, Renée 18 March 2013 (has links)
A new damping technology, the Viscoelastic Coupling Damper (VCD), has been developed at the University of Toronto for reinforced concrete (RC) coupled wall high-rise buildings. These dampers are introduced in place of coupling beams to provide distributed supplemental damping in all lateral modes of vibration. This thesis presents an analytical investigation of the application of VCDs in a high-rise case study building located in a region of high seismicity. A parametric study has been conducted to determine the optimal number and placement of the dampers to achieve enhanced seismic performance without compromising the wind response of the structure. Nonlinear time history analyses have been carried out in order to compare the seismic performance of a conventional coupled wall building to alternative designs incorporating VCDs. Results highlight the improved performance of VCDs over RC coupling beams at all levels of seismic hazard. A design procedure for seismic-critical buildings is proposed.

A New Subscale for the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) to Screen Adults for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)Calmenson, Nina E 08 1900 (has links)
The Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is a widely used and available self-report measure designed to assess clinical syndromes and has the potential to assist in the process of ADHD assessment. Since the PAI's inception, several researchers have attempted to create other supplemental indicators, some so effective and useful that they were added to the second edition of the Personality Assessment Inventory Professional Manual. Previous researchers have offered important insights into the possibility of the creation of an ADHD item-level index for the PAI that would effectively decrease false positive rates and increase accurate detection of ADHD in the adult population. Previous researchers were not successful in creating an item-level subscale that reliably detected adult ADHD. Four experts in ADHD assessment rated PAI items that they believed could discriminate adults with ADHD from adults without ADHD. After performing a PCA on the top 16 items chosen by the experts, 12 items sufficiently loaded onto one factor that has clear face validity by conceptually matching the DSM-5 description of inattention and impulsivity commonly seen in adults with ADHD as well as the "internalized restlessness" Hallowell and Ratey describe for adult ADHD. The PAI-ADHD was found to have good internal consistency, a = .84. The PAI-ADHD has good convergent validity with the Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale – Self-Report – Long Version (CAARS-Self) and Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS). The PAI-ADHD also has good concurrent validity. Two cut scores are suggested, 13 and 22, to maximize sensitivity (.88) and specificity (.89), create three screening groups: ruled-out, at-risk, and probable ADHD, and increase utility for clinicians.

Many believe eating healthfully is too expensive and therefore opt for less expensive, lower quality foods. There are disputes between research groups and government as to whether nutrition policies should be adjusted. Federal programs have made strides in combating food insecurity through nutrition help and education programs, but many question if the amount of skills in food selection and preparation can compensate for limited incomes. Regardless, the low incomes' diets are inadequate to meet nutritional needs and people are suffering the consequences. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent one can follow the USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommendations while only receiving SNAP benefits. Nine volunteers attempted to limit their food budget to $4.50 a day while maintaining MyPyramid recommendations. This study was a qualitative case study conducted in Southern Illinois in the spring of 2011. This study was descriptive, and the investigator gathered and analyzed the data.

As diferentes intensidades de luz ou até mesmo a sua qualidade podem desempenhar um papel importante em algumas das principais vias metabólicas envolvidas na síntese de compostos bioativos. A radiação ultravioleta B (UV-B), além de influenciar mudanças no DNA, na atividade fotossintética e no crescimento das plantas, pode induzir a síntese e o acúmulo de metabólitos secundários. Assim, para investigar a efetividade da radiação UV-B suplementar na pós-colheita, cáqui (Diospyros kaki) e goiaba (Psidium guajava) foram submetidos a 48 horas de tratamento e posteriormente analisados em relação ao seu conteúdo de carotenoides. O acúmulo de carotenoides ocorreu de forma significativa para ambas as frutas, porém em momentos diferentes. A fim de entender os efeitos exercidos pela radiação UV-B suplementar em alimentos fontes de outros compostos bioativos, maçãs (Malus domestica) foram submetidas a 36 horas de tratamento e acompanhadas por 21 dias de armazenamento. Os parâmetros de qualidade durante o armazenamento das frutas não foram influenciados pela radiação UV-B, ocorrendo apenas perda de firmeza e de peso em todas as frutas As diferentes classes de compostos fenólicos identificados e quantificados por HPLC-MS apresentaram comportamentos diversos após o tratamento. Ácidos hidroxicinâmicos e antocianinas foram positivamente afetados pela suplementação de radiação UV-B. Para avaliar os efeitos da radiação UV-B suplementar sobre os compostos bioativos durante a pré-colheita de alimentos, alfaces verdes e roxas (Lactuca sativa) foram submetidas a 1 hora de tratamento por dia durante duas semanas. O conteúdo de carotenoides nas alfaces verdes e de compostos fenólicos nas alfaces roxas foi significativamente maior após o tratamento com radiação suplementar. Neste contexto, a radiação UV-B pode ser considerada uma tecnologia promissora no que diz respeito à modulação de compostos bioativos em alimentos, tanto durante o cultivo quanto após a colheita. / Different light intensities or even their quality may play an important role in some of the major metabolic pathways involved in the synthesis of bioactive compounds. In addition to influencing changes in DNA, photosynthetic activity and plant growth, ultraviolet B radiation (UV-B) may induce the synthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites. Therefore, to investigate the effectiveness of post-harvest UV-B radiation, kaki (Diospyros kaki) and guava (Psidium guajava) were submitted to 48 hours of treatment and then analyzed for their carotenoid content. The accumulation of carotenoids occurred in a significant way for both fruits, but at different times. In order to understand the effects exerted by supplemental UV-B radiation on food sources of other bioactive compounds, apples (Malus domestica) were subjected to 36 hours of treatment and accompanied by 21 days of storage. The quality parameters during fruit storage were not influenced by UV-B radiation, with only loss of firmness and weight occurring in all fruits. The different classes of phenolic compounds identified and quantified by HPLC-MS showed different behavior after treatment. Hydroxycinnamic acids and anthocyanins were positively affected by the supplementation of UV-B radiation. To evaluate the effects of supplemental UV-B radiation on bioactive compounds during food cultivation, green and red lettuces (Lactuca sativa) were subjected to 1 hour of treatment per day for two weeks. The carotenoid content in green lettuce and phenolic compounds in red lettuce was significantly higher after treatment with supplementary radiation. In this context, UV-B radiation can be considered a promising technology for the modulation of bioactive compounds in food, both during and after harvest.

The Impact of Supplemental Educational Services on Standards Based AssessmentsJanuary 2015 (has links)

When you have more students who are eligible for tutoring than those who are successfully meeting the academic requirements, then there is a problem. This study examined the impact that NCLB's federal mandates of providing Supplemental Educational tutoring services had on New Mexico’s Standards Based Assessment results for eligible elementary students in one district who participated in tutoring for three school years from 2008 to 2011. The quantitative study examined the archived Standards Based Assessment data for each tutored participant leading to the total average means scaled scores per year for four elementary schools in comparison to non-tutored students within the same schools. Research Question 1 asked if Supplemental Educational Services tutoring increased Standards Based Assessment scores. To generalize the results and state whether there was an increase in SBA test scores due to participation in the SES tutoring was not valid. Research Question 2 asked if the number of years tutored increased Standard Based Assessment scores. There were only three students who were tutored for two years consecutively. Research Question 3 asked if one group of providers were more effective than others. One provider was used from 44% to 88% of the time; however, there were no clear findings as to which SES provider was more effective as to SBA gains. Research Question 4 asked as to what services offered from SES providers was the parent choice for tutoring. The researcher found descriptions from the other SES providers to be similar to Club Z! Interviews were not part of the study and contacts made with the providers were not successful, pre- and posttest results of participating students were not available.
