Data analytics and methods for improved feature selection and matching

This work focuses on analysing and improving feature detection and matching. After creating an initial framework of study, four main areas of work are researched. These areas make up the main chapters within this thesis and focus on using the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT).The preliminary analysis of the SIFT investigates how this algorithm functions. Included is an analysis of the SIFT feature descriptor space and an investigation into the noise properties of the SIFT. It introduces a novel use of the a contrario methodology and shows the success of this method as a way of discriminating between images which are likely to contain corresponding regions from images which do not. Parameter analysis of the SIFT uses both parameter sweeps and genetic algorithms as an intelligent means of setting the SIFT parameters for different image types utilising a GPGPU implementation of SIFT. The results have demonstrated which parameters are more important when optimising the algorithm and the areas within the parameter space to focus on when tuning the values. A multi-exposure, High Dynamic Range (HDR), fusion features process has been developed where the SIFT image features are matched within high contrast scenes. Bracketed exposure images are analysed and features are extracted and combined from different images to create a set of features which describe a larger dynamic range. They are shown to reduce the effects of noise and artefacts that are introduced when extracting features from HDR images directly and have a superior image matching performance. The final area is the development of a novel, 3D-based, SIFT weighting technique which utilises the 3D data from a pair of stereo images to cluster and class matched SIFT features. Weightings are applied to the matches based on the 3D properties of the features and how they cluster in order to attempt to discriminate between correct and incorrect matches using the a contrario methodology. The results show that the technique provides a method for discriminating between correct and incorrect matches and that the a contrario methodology has potential for future investigation as a method for correct feature match prediction.

Influence of the sweep angle on the leading edge vortex and its relation to the power extraction performance of a fully-passive oscillating-plate hydrokinetic turbine prototype

Oscillating-foil hydrokinetic turbines have gained interest over the years to extract energy from renewable sources. The influence of the sweep angle on the performance of a fully-passive oscillating-plate hydrokinetic turbine prototype was investigated experimentally in the present work. The sweep angle was introduced to promote spanwise flow along the plate in order to manipulate the leading edge vortex (LEV) and hydrodynamically optimize the performance of the turbine. In the present work, flat plates of two configurations were considered: a plate with a 6° sweep angle and an unswept plate (control), which were undergoing fully-passive pitch and heave motions in uniform inflow at the Reynolds numbers ranging from 15 000 to 30 000. The resulting kinematic parameters and the energy extraction performance were evaluated for both plates. Planar (2D) particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to obtain patterns of the phase-averaged out-of-plane vorticity during the oscillation cycle. The circulation in the wake was then related to the induced-forces on the plate by calculating the moments of vorticity of the LEV with respect to the pitching axis of the plate. Tomographic (3D) PIV was implemented in evaluating the influence of the spanwise flow on the dynamics of the vortex structure in three-dimensional space. The rate of deformation of the vortex length was quantified by calculating the deformation terms embedded in the vorticity equations, then linked to the stability of the vortex. The results show evidence of delay of the shedding of LEV and increased vortex stability, in the case of the swept plate. The manipulation of the LEV by the spanwise flow was related to the induced kinematics exhibited by the prolonged heave forces experienced by the swept plate, which led to the higher power extraction performance at high inflow velocities. In the presence of spanwise flow, positive vortex stretching along the vortex line increased the stabilization of the vortex core and prevented the onset of helical vortex breakdown, observed in the case of the unswept plate. The use of the sweep profile on the plate has led to the improvement of energy extraction performance of the fully-passive hydrokinetic turbine. / Graduate

Entwicklung eines Verfahrens für den dreidimensionalen Entwurf von Rotoren in Axialverdichtern

Die heutige und zukünftige Entwicklung beim Entwurf von Axialverdichtern für die Anwendung in Flugzeugtriebwerken ist immer stärker davon geprägt, ein möglichst großes Druckverhältnis mit möglichst wenigen Stufen zu erzeugen. Ziel ist es, möglichst viel Leistung mit möglichst geringem Gewicht umzusetzen, um die Effizienz der Maschine weiter zu verbessern. Um dies zu erreichen, muss eine Erhöhung der Stufendruckverhältnisse und damit eine Erhöhung der Stufenbelastung in Kauf genommen werden. Die höhere Belastung hat jedoch einen Anstieg der Verluste aufgrund der stärker werdenden Sekundärströmungen zur Folge, und wirkt sich zunächst negativ auf die Stabilität und den Wirkungsgrad der Maschine aus. Diese negativen Effekte können nur durch eine Weiterentwicklung der Schaufelgeometrie kompensiert werden. Hierbei stoßen die derzeit benutzten Entwurfsmethoden jedoch an ihre Grenzen. Aus diesem Grund wurde ein neues Verfahren für den dreidimensionalen Entwurf von Rotoren in Axialverdichtern entwickelt. In dieser Arbeit wird dessen Entwicklung präsentiert. Das Verfahren umfasst die systematische Anwendung von Pfeilung und V-Stellung, sowie die dreidimensionale inverse Berechnung der radialen Skelettlinienverteilung. Um damit eine Verbesserung des Rotorwirkungsgrades zu erreichen, müssen vor allem die kritischen wand- bzw. spaltnahen Bereiche optimal an die Strömungsumgebung angepasst werden. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschreibt ausführlich die theoretischen Grundlagen der Rotorströmung und des Rotorentwurfs. Basierend darauf werden für die Umsetzung eines vollständigen dreidimensionalen Schaufelentwurfs zwei Panelverfahren zur Berechnung der dreidimensionalen jedoch reibungslosen Strömung, zur Lösung der Nachrechen- bzw. der Entwurfsaufgabe, entwickelt. Die Panelverfahren werden angewandt, um eine Methodik für den effektiven Einsatz von Pfeilung, V-Stellung und inverser Skelettlinienberechnung für den dreidimensionalen Rotorentwurf festzulegen. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden anschließend für den Entwurf eines hochbelasteten Rotors in einem einstufigen Niedergeschwindigkeitsverdichter nach dieser neuen Entwurfsmethodik genutzt. Anhand von Ergebnissen aus Rechnungen und Messungen für diesen Rotor wird die Wirksamkeit des Verfahrens demonstriert. / The recent and future design of axial compressors for aero engines is strongly affected by the aim to generate a high pressure ratio with less stages to increase power and reduce weight to achieve an improved efficiency. This can only be achieved when the stage pressure ratio is raised which leads to increased stage loading. But the higher stage loading results in higher losses caused by stronger secondary flows. This has a negative effect on compressor stability and efficiency. To counteract the negative effects enhanced blade geometries are necessary. With the recently used design methods this is hardly to achieve. For that reason a new method for the three-dimensional design of rotors and stators in axial compressors has been developed. This report summarizes that work. The method accounts for the systematic application of sweep and dihedral as well as the three-dimensional inverse calculation of the camber-line distributions along blade height. To achieve improved efficiency the regions close to the end-walls and the tip and hub gap have to be adapted to the flow environment. The recent report described in detail the theoretical background of the compressor blade flow and compressor blade design. Based on that, two inviscid panel methods for the fully three-dimensional design of compressor blades are described. The panel methods are applied to define a methodology for the effective application of sweep, dihedral and inverse camber-line calculation in a three-dimensional blade design process. Afterwards the findings are used to design a highly-loaded single-stage low-speed research compressor rotor. The validity of the presented design method is proven with CFD and test results.

Surface meshing algorithms require certain relationships among the number of intervals on the curves that bound the surface. Assigning the number of intervals to all of the curves in the model such that all relationships are satisfied is called interval assignment. Volume meshing algorithms also require certain relationships among the numbers of intervals on each of the curves on the volume. These relationships are not always captured by surface meshing requirements. This thesis presents a news technique for automatically identifying volume constraints. In this technique, volume constraints are grouped with surface constraints and are solved simultaneously. A sweepable volume has source, target and linking surfaces. The technique described in this thesis uses graph algorithms to identify independent, parallel sets of linking surfaces, and determine if they correspond to through-holes or blind-holes. For blind-holes, the algorithm generates constraints that prevent the hole from being too deep in interval parameter space and, thus, penetrating opposite target surfaces. For each linking set, the adjoining source and target surfaces are partially ordered by the structure of the linking set. A small set of representative paths for each linking set is found, and the representative paths for all linking sets are gathered and distilled by Gaussian elimination into a small set of constraints.

Photovoltaic Power Production and Energy Storage Systems in Low-Voltage Power Grids / Solcellsproduktion och energilagringssystem i lågspänningselnät

In recent years, photovoltaic (PV) power production have seen an increase and the PV power systems are often located in the distribution grids close to the consumers. Since the distributions grids rarely are designed for power production, investigation of its effects is needed. It is seen in this thesis that PV power production will cause voltages to rise, potentially to levels exceeding the limits that grid owners have to abide by. A model of a distribution grid is developed in MathWorks MATLAB. The model contains a transformer, cables, households, energy storage systems (ESS:s) and photovoltaic power systems. The system is simulated by implementing a numerical Forward Backward Sweep Method, solving for powers, currents and voltages in the grid. PV power systems are added in different configurations along with different configurations of ESS:s. The results are analysed, primarily concerning voltages and voltage limits. It is concluded that addition of PV power production in the distribution grid affects voltages, more or less depending on where in the grid the systems are placed and what peak power they have. It is also concluded that having energy storage systems in the grid, changing the power factor of the inverter for the PV systems or lowering the transformer secondary-side voltage can bring the voltages down. / På senare tid har det skett en ökning i antalet solcellsanläggningar som installeras i elnätet och dessa är ofta placerade i distributionsnäten nära hushållen. Eftersom distributionsnäten sällan är dimensionerade för produktion så behöver man utreda effekten av det. I det här arbetet visas det att solcellsproduktion kommer att öka spänningen i elnätet, potentiellt så mycket att de gränser elnätsägarna måste hålla nätet inom överstigs. En modell över lågspänningsnätet skapas i MathWorks MATLAB. Modellen innehåller transformator, kablar, hushåll, energilager och solcellsanläggningar. Systemet simuleras med hjälp av en numerisk Forward Backward Sweep-lösare som beräknar effekter, strömmar och spänningar i elnätet. Solcellanläggningarna placeras ut i elnätet i olika konfigurationer tillsammans med olika konfigurationer av energilager. Resultaten från simuleringarna analyseras främst med avseende på spänningen i elnätet utifrån dess gränser. De slutsatser som dras i arbetet är att solcellsproduktion kommer att påverka spänningen, mycket beroende på var i elnätet anläggningarna placeras och storleken hos dem. This occurred not only by advances in production technologies of small generators and frequency inverters, but also by the benefits that brings to the distribution systems and the incentive policies. In the analysis of these systems is essential to calculate the power flow and properly solve it and the modeling of the inverter should be reviewed together with its implementation in the method employed, attempting to the fact that the inverters are beginning to use advanced functions that can to provide ancillary services. In this work the modelling of inverter with advanced functions such as Basic Intelligent Volt-Var Control (BIVV) and Intelligent Volt-Var With Hysteresis (IVVH) are reviewed, therefore it is propose methods the implements this models in the method sweep. In proposal implementation it is use of elements of the sensitivity matrix of nodes PV defined in the compensation method. In the analyzed cases, the implementations were effectiveness achieving solutions in convergent values and in accordance to the control strategies. In the results of simulations there were differences in the operating points of the inverter acting on a node of the distribution system comparing the different modeling analyzed in different system load conditions and different levels of active power supply. When comparing the voltage profiles of the various modeling, in general notice that there is a greater variation when it has large reactive power capacity. If in the future of distributed generation evolve to provide reactive support as the ancillary service, it shall be careful properly modelling the inverter avoiding mistaken results that will affect the plans of the concessionaires. / Nos últimos anos verificou-se um grande aumento no uso de geradores distribuídos. Isso ocorreu não apenas pelos avanços nas tecnologias de produção de pequenos geradores e inversores de frequência, mas também pelos benefícios que estes trazem aos sistemas de distribuição e pelas políticas de incentivos. Nas análises desses sistemas é fundamental calcular o fluxo de potência e, para resolvê-lo adequadamente, deve-se revisar a modelagem do inversor e sua implementação no método empregado, atentando-se ao fato de que os inversores estão começando a utilizar funções avançadas passíveis de fornecer serviços ancilares. Neste trabalho são revisadas as modelagens dos inversores com funções avançadas, tais como o controle Basic Intelligent Volt-Var (BIVV) e Intelligent Volt-Var With Hysteresis (IVVH), além de propor métodos de implementação para o método da varredura. Nas implementações propostas se faz uso de elementos da matriz de sensibilidade dos nós PV definida no método da compensação. Nos casos analisados, as implementações tiveram eficácia, conseguindo atingir soluções em valores convergentes e em concordância às estratégias de controle. Já nos resultados das simulações, ilustram-se as diferenças dos pontos operativos do inversor atuando em um nó do sistema de distribuição comparando-se as diferentes modelagens analisadas em distintas condições de carga do sistema e diversos níveis de fornecimento de potência ativa. Ao comparar-se os perfis de tensão das diversas modelagens, em geral, nota-se que há uma variação maior quando se tem maior capacidade de potência reativa. Se no futuro a geração distribuída evoluir para prestar suporte de potência reativa como um serviço ancilar, é necessário tomar precauções para modelar adequadamente o inversor, de modo a evitar obter resultados equivocados que afetarão os planejamentos das concessionárias.

Novel efficiency evaluation methods and analysis for three-phase induction machines

This thesis describes new methods of evaluating the efficiency of three-phase induction machines using synthetic loading. Synthetic loading causes the induction machine to draw full-load current without the need to connect a mechanical load to the machine's drive shaft. The synthetic loading methods cause the machine to periodically accelerate and decelerate, producing an alternating motor-generator action. This action causes the machine, on average over each synthetic loading cycle, to operate at rated rms current, rated rms voltage and full-load speed, thereby producing rated copper losses, iron loss and friction and windage loss. The excitation voltages are supplied from a PWM inverter with a large capacity DC bus capable of supplying rated rms voltage. The synthetic loading methods of efficiency evaluation are verified in terms of the individual losses in the machine by using a new dynamic model that accounts for iron loss and all parameter variations. The losses are compared with the steady-state loss distribution determined using very accurate induction machine parameters. The parameters were identified using a run-up-to-speed test at rated voltage and the locked rotor and synchronous speed tests conducted with a variable voltage supply. The latter tests were used to synthesise the variations in stator leakage reactance, magnetising reactance and the equivalent iron loss resistance over the induction machine's speed range. The run-up-to-speed test was used to determine the rotor resistance and leakage reactance variations over the same speed range. The test method results showed for the first time that the rotor leakage reactance varied in the same manner as the stator leakage and magnetising reactances with respect to current. When all parameter variations are taken into account there is good agreement between theoretical and measured results for the synthetic loading methods. The synthetic loading methods are applied to three-phase induction machines with both single- and double-cage rotors to assess the effect of rotor parameter variations in the method. Various excitation waveforms for each method were used and the measured and modelled efficiencies compared to conventional efficiency test results. The results verify that it is possible to accurately evaluate the efficiency of three-phase induction machines using synthetic loading.

Ion selectivity in carrier-mediated dialysis and electrodialysis

Membrane transport processes underlie many purification technologies. The efficiency of a membrane separation process depends upon material throughput (flux), and the degree to which the membrane discriminates amongst species in the feed stock (selectivity). In a supported liquid membrane, flux may be enhanced by carrier molecules, which act as catalysts of translocation. Carrier molecules also confer selectivity, via differential molecular recognition of the substances in the feed stock. The effect of electrical potential on the flux and selectivity of carrier-containing supported liquid membranes is not well documented. We elected to study the effect of electrical potential on supported liquid membranes containing valinomycin, a potassium ionophore, and a calixarene ester, a sodium ionophore. In these systems, the open circuit membrane potential could be made positive or negative by the choice of anion. With both of these carriers, we observed that selectivity for potassium or sodium salts was dependent on the open circuit membrane potential. To confirm that electrical potential was responsible for the observed selectivity variance, we applied a potential across the membrane using a potentiostat. The applied potential created conditions for carrier-mediated electrodialysis, where oxidation and reduction reactions on either side of the membrane act as the driving force for transmembrane flux of charged species. In chronoamperometry experiments, we found that selectivity for potassium or sodium ion was dependent on the applied electrical potential. Subject to some constraints, selectivity and flux could be controlled by the application of positive or negative electrical potentials. Linear sweep voltammetry experiments allowed for the rapid prediction of the potential that must be applied to achieve optimal selectivity. We also found that membrane potential measurements, as well as the magnitude of current that flows in chronoamperometry experiments, could be interpreted to predict Eisenman and Hofmeister sequences. These results are novel, and await a convincing theoretical justification. The results also suggest that a separation technology could be developed around the idea of modulating selectivity with electrical potential. In this regard, carrier-mediated electrodialysis may be suitable for the sequestration of toxic or radioactive heavy metals, and a large number of carrier molecules for metal ions are currently known. The technique may also be suitable for separating organic molecules, such as high-value chiral pharmaceuticals. Supported liquid membranes are a useful research tool, but industrial applications may require a more stable membrane architecture. / Graduate
