The causative and anticausative alternation in Kikongo (Kizombo)Fernando, Mbiavanga 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigates the applicability and suitability of the syntactic decomposition approach to account for the causative and anticausative alternation in Kikongo (Kizombo) in terms of the structural nodes of Voice, vCAUS and Root as posited in this approach to (anti-)causativity (see Alexiadou 2010). In addition, the aspectual approach postulated by Vendler (1957) and further developed by Verkuyl (1972) and Smith (1997) is invoked for the reason that the two alternants in the causative and anticausative alternation in Kikongo (Kizombo) are associated with aspectual verb class differences. Research on the causative and anticausative alternation has long been the focus of extensive work in typological and theoretical linguistics. Two central issues revolve around the debate: first the properties of meaning that determine the alternation and the derivational relationship between the alternants, and second, the relation between the causative alternation and other transitivity alternations, e.g. passives and middles. This dissertation demonstrates that there is a wide range of acceptability judgments associated with anticausative uses of Kizombo in externally and internally caused change of state and change of location/position verbs. The verb root is the element of meaning that allows the Kizombo verbs to alternate irrespective of their verb classes, including agentive verb roots. All the causative variants of externally caused verbs are morphologically unmarked, but all the anticausative variants are morphologically marked. However, all the internally caused change of state verbs are morphologically unmarked. Both the causative and anticausative variants of change of location/position verbs are morphologically unmarked. The anticausative and passive sentences can license an external causer through an implicit argument. While the passive verb sentences can be modified by by-agent, purpose clause and agent-oriented phrases, the anticausative sentences can be modified by instrument, natural force, agent-oriented and by-self phrases. The acceptability of modifiers with anticausatives and passives presupposes a presence of a causer in both constructions. The causative form of change of location/position verbs is syntactically intransitive (i.e. in the locative-subject alternation), but its anticausative variant acquires a transitive-like form. Thus, the concept of causative is related to cause and effect of the argument participating in the process. The study considers competing approaches concerning the derivational direction of the causative and anticausative alternation. Given the data in Kizombo, it is argued that the syntactic decomposition approach is the most appropriate to account for the example sentences in the causative and anticausative constructions. The transitive approach could probably deal with the externally caused change of state verbs, as discussed in chapter 6, but would face a challenge relating to the change of location/position verbs because none of the variants is morphologically marked.

Les constructions exceptives du français et de l’arabe : syntaxe et interface sémantique-syntaxe / Exceptive constructions in French and in Arabic : syntax and semantic-syntax interfaceGalal Abdel Wahab Moustafa, Mohamed 08 January 2019 (has links)
This research takes an interest the syntax of exceptive constructions (ECs) and its correspondence with semantic within two languages: French and Arabic. Based on a corpus of authentic examples, we suggest a classification of ECs into two major categories with dissimilar syntactic behaviors: the paradigmatic-ECs, which are syntactically related to coordination and the hypotactic-ECs, which are contrarily related to subordination. We will focus our analysis on the markers sauf, excepté, hormis, etc. and analyze them as particular case of paradigmatic lists/piles, in which two segments of the utterance pile up on the same syntactic position and whose most famous case is coordination. This analysis is different from the one generally associated with these markers in French grammars and dictionaries which consider them as prepositions. For Arabic, we propose a tripartite classification of ECs that considers the specificities of Arabic relative to French. In addition to the paradigmatic-ECs and the hypotactic-ECs, we identify, in Arabic, a third class, the paratactic-ECs, which are constructions with a verbal head that belong to the parataxis, a process particularly developed in Arabic. Our analyzes lead us to consider the markers ʾillā, ġayr and siwā in Arabic as coordinating conjunctions. These items, like their French counterparts, relate two elements where X on the right of the marker and Y on the left form paradigmatic lists/piles, in the sense that they fulfill the same syntactic function in the utterance. We analyze the lexical items ʿadā (mā-ʿadā), ẖalā (mā-ẖalā), ḥāšā (mā-ḥāšā) as verbs. These verbs introduce a clause that maintains a parataxic relation with the preceding clause. Finally, we consider the items bistiṯnā'i and biẖilāfi as prepositive phrases introducing a sequence that maintains a subordinate relationship with the main clause.

Assumimos a
Hipótese do Bootstrapping Prosódico (CHRISTOPHE et al.,1997; MORGAN &
DEMUTH, 1996) como explicação do modo pelo qual a criança procede à formação do
seu léxico inicial e à aquisição da sintaxe de sua língua, pela exploração de habilidades
perceptuais. Como objetivos específicos, a presente tese busca: (i) em situação de
interação mãe-criança, caracterizar propriedades prosódicas de N(ome) e ADJ no DP
pleno na FDC; (ii) investigar a sensibilidade de bebês, em seu primeiro ano de vida, a
pistas prosódicas da FDC brasileira, relativas ao posicionamento de ADJ no DP pleno;
This thesis investigates the role of prosodic properties of infant directed speech (IDS)
for the acquisition of adjectives in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). In BP, adjectives
constitute a category that does not present fixed morphological mark or syntactic
position. Besides, adjectives and nouns share mopho-phonological morphemes, and
either one can follow DET- in the DP. This study aims at investigating the role of
prosodic cues of ADJ(ective) in Brazilian IDS for distinguishing lexical elements of
ADJ(adjectivs) and N(ouns) and for the process of language acquisition. The generative
language model proposed by Chomsky (1995, and subsequent works), Minimalism
Program is assumed. We also assume the Prosodic/Phonological Bootstrapping
Hypothesis (MORGAN & DEMUTH, 1996; CHRISTOPHE et al., 1997) that explains
how children acquire their lexicon exploring perceptual abilities. Our specific objectives
are: (i) characterize prosodic properties of N and ADJ in the DP, in a mother-child
interactive situation; (ii) investigate infants sensitivity to prosodic cues of Brazilian
IDS, related to the position of ADJ in the DP; (iii) verify the role of prosodic properties
of the adjective in BP for the mapping of pseudo words to object properties by 2- and 3-
year-old children. In the first experiment, we observed that ADJ is accented, in
comparison to N, when IDS was produced in a semi-spontaneous environment. In the
second experiment, infants were sensitive to prosodic distinctions in DPs, in which the
position of ADJ was manipulated. In the third experiment, 2- and 3- year-old used
prosodic cues of ADJ to map novel words to properties. Our results are compatible with
the hypothesis that prosodic cues are reliable sources of information for the distinction
of the lexical elements of N and ADJ in Brazilian IDS and indicate that prosodic cues
might be relevant for the acquisition of ADJ and for the bootstrapping of the process of
lexical acquisition by Brazilian children.

escolhas do parser. Para a construção dos estímulos experimentais, foram selecionadas
palavras que podem pertencer tanto à categoria Verbo, quanto à categoria Adjetivo.
Construímos sentenças com os dois tipos de estruturas sintáticas: Tópico – [A criança
SUJA]IPa madrinha mandou ela para o banho; e SVO – [A criança]ϕ [SUJA a madrinha] com
a comida do almoço.
This study investigates the role of prosody in syntactic processing. Our hypothesis is that
prosody could not only prevent ambiguity, but it also guides the parser, providing cues to the
syntactic tree construction during linguistic processing by adults. We elected Topic (of intern
argument) and SVO (nontopicalized) structures because in contrast with both of them, the
prosodic cues are accessible from the beginning of the sentences in both structures. A set of
experiments was conducted according to the following objectives: in production: (a) to verify
the prosodic properties of SVO and Topic sentences in reading experiments; (b) to investigate
if there is a preference for a default prosody; in comprehension: (c) to verify the preference
for each structure by comparing listening reaction time with or without prosodic cues; (d) to
verify if the modification of these cues could "trick" the parser choices. For the construction
of experimental stimuli, words that may belong to Verb category as well as Adjective
category were selected. We built sentences with both types of syntactic tree: Topic – [A
criança SUJA]IP a madrinha mandou ela para o banho; and SVO – [A criança]ϕ [SUJA a
madrinha] com a comida do almoço. (Topic – The dirty child was sent to have a shower by
their godmother; and SVO – The child soils their godmother with the lunch food.) The results
of the production experiments revealed that there are acoustic cues which differentiate both
types of structure. Furthermore they suggest that there is a preference, when reading it aloud,
for SVO prosody production when participants are not aware of the full meaning of the
sentences. As regards the comprehension experiments it also showed a preference for SVO
structure when prosodic cues are not accessible to the listener. On the other hand, when the
prosody is informative, the results suggest that not only it guides the parser in syntactic
structure choices, but also it could “trick” and mislead it to the processing of a different
structure in the cases of incongruity between syntax and prosody. Altogether the results reveal
that, on the one hand, it seems to have a SVO default structure, but, on the other hand, the
Topic prosody seems to prevent, in a way, the activation of this default. Having the analyzed
structures and based on the experimental results, we indorse that the prosody guides these
projections, since the acoustic cues are accessible from the beginning of sentences. According
to Bocci’s proposal (2008), Topic properties would be coded in syntax, guiding the syntactic
derivation; in turn, these properties would be previously available via prosody. The obtained
results are discussed in the light of three theoretical approaches: the Prosodic/Phonological
Bootstrapping Hypothesis (MORGAN & DEMUTH, 1996; CHRISTOPHE et al., 1997;
2008), which holds that prosodic cues promote speech stream segmentation, facilitating
linguistic processing (in case of adults); the Integrated Model of Online Computation
(CORRÊA & AUGUSTO, 2006; 2007), according to which the syntactic tree is created
during the course of processing; and the Auditory Comprehension Model of Language
(FRIEDERICI, 2011), which foresees the prosody-syntax interaction on the
neurophysiological level.

This research focuses on the interface between lexical semantics and syntax, and is part of the lexical database project called DiCo (acronym for Dictionnaire de combinatoire) at the Observatoire de Linguistique Sens-Texte [OLST] at the University of Montreal. The project aims to register in a concise and complete way the typical syntactic behavior of each lexical unit directly in the dictionary. To this end, we encode the co-occurrence of the DiCo's nominal lexical units with their actants within a government pattern (also known as valency structure, subcategorization frame, predicate-argument structure, etc.), using, among other things, the surface syntactic dependencies involved. In this dissertation, we present the syntactic properties of a French nominal dependency, the one that we named attributive adnominale, so as to expose a methodology for the identification and the characterization of surface syntactic dependencies. We also give the list of valence-controlled nominal dependencies that were identified in our work. Subsequently, we describe the creation of a database of generalized French government patterns named CARNAVAL. Finally, we discuss possible applications of our work, particularly in regard to the creation of a typology of French government patterns.

As semantically non-compositional phrases, idioms are lexical units. Consequently, they must have their own entries in a lexical resource, with a lexicographic definition and grammatical characteristics. Furthermore, because of their phrasal signifier, idioms show – to varying degrees – a formal flexibility (passivization, attachment of modifiers, substitution of components, etc.)Our thesis defends the view that a description of idioms that combine identification of their lexical components and identification of dependency links between these components will permit to predict their formal variations. Such a description is possible only in a model of lexicon that describes precisely combinatorial proprieties of lexical units. Our thesis, based on the Explanatory Combinatorial Lexicology’s framework, exploits and enhances the data of the French Lexical Network (fr-LN). This resource is being developed at the laboratory ATILF (Nancy, France). The thesis makes two principal contributions to the study of phraseology. The first contribution is the development of a precise description of idioms’ lexico-syntactic structures. The second contribution is the indentification and the study of structural, syntactic and lexical variations linked to idioms’ formal flexibility. Idioms’ formal variations are correlated with their lexico-syntactic structures, but also with their lexicographic definitions. This work leads us to introduce the notion of structural projection, that plays a central role in the continuum of idiom’s formal flexibility

Finalement, nous discutons des applications possibles de notre travail, particulièrement en ce qui a trait à la création d'une typologie des régimes lexicaux du français. / This research focuses on the interface between lexical semantics and syntax, and is part of the lexical database project called DiCo (acronym for Dictionnaire de combinatoire) at the Observatoire de Linguistique Sens-Texte [OLST] at the University of Montreal.

台灣閩南語新調群分析 / Tone group parsing of Taiwan Southern Min楊雯婷, Yang, Wen-ting Unknown Date (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to explore the tone sandhi domain, tone group (hereafter, TG), of Taiwan Southern Min of younger generation. A corpus is built and analyzed within the framework of Prosodic Theory, a derived theory from the Phonology-Syntax Interface Theory.
In the literature, TG boundary # was marked at the right edge of an XP which is neither an adjunct nor a clitic. However, the TG boundary # of younger generation is marked at the right edges of a maximal XP, an adjunctive XP and an X-head. Moreover, language variation is observed in the TG parsing: the presence of TG boundary # is optional. There are four TG parsings not observed in the literature: (1) V # NP # (2) V # QP # (3) QP # A # (4) AdvP # V #.
TG is redefined as a Phonological Phrase which syntactically corresponds to a maximal XP, an adjunct XP, an X-head but not to a clitic XP. The four TG parsings are then analyzed with Rank-Ordering Model of EVAL (ROE), a subtheory within the Optimality Theory domain which particularly addresses language variation. According to ROE, constraints on the right side of critical cut-off line participate in the prediction of variation. Three constraints involving in variation are proposed: Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ), ϕ-min and Align-R (X-head, ϕ). Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ) distinguishes lexical projection and functional projection, ϕ-min requires a Phonological Phrase to be minimally disyllabic, and Align-R (X-head, ϕ) predicts # to occur at the right edge of an X-head. The analysis centers around the three constraints’ relation with the critical cut-off line. The constraint rankings are: Ident-T-Rϕ | Align-R (XP-Fnc, ϕ) >> ϕ-min >> Align-R (X-head, ϕ) >> *T >> Align-R (XP-Lex, ϕ). Except for the faithfulness constraint Ident-T-Rϕ, the other markedness constraints are arranged at the right side of the cut-off line in order to predict language variation.
