Ethnic differences on the labor market : How does negative attitudes affect employment probabilities?

Nilsson, Axel January 2022 (has links)
There is a significant gap in employment rates between people born in and outside of Sweden. Previous literature and theory present evidence of discrimination being a part of the gap. This paper studies the differences in employment between foreign-born and natives in Sweden. The terror attack in Stockholm in 2017 is used as an exogenous variation in attitudes towards foreign-born individuals to measure the discrimination. By collecting individual and aggregated data from Swedish statistics, the study examines how the negative attitudes following the terror attack affect ethnical differences in employment. Data is also collected from retriever to analyze the media coverage around the time of the incident to pinpoint a source of the attack and compare with the development of the employment after the attack. Using the difference-in-differences approch, result was found suggesting that the expected negative attitudes did not affect foreign-born individuals' employment probabilities. However, there were some negative effects shortly after the attack, but they were very small. Results are in line with the large spike in media coverage around the time of the incident which quickly decreases in the months after. A possible explanation of the results is that most of the employers don't let prejudice decide when making hiring decisions. Because the negative effects are very small nd only in the short run, this paper concludes that the expected attitude shift following the terror attack did not affect immigrants' employment probabilities.

"My view of the world versus reality, they go far apart!" : Audience responses on Facebook towards the Nice attack in 2016

Klint Olsson, Matilda January 2017 (has links)
When a person drives a truck into the middle of a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, horrifying images, and witnessing stories is spread around the world. The Swedish nationwide evening tabloid newspaper Aftonbladet publishes the story during one week on their Facebook page, resulting in thousands of comments. This paper examines the interactive audience responses on social media towards the encounter of suffering caused in the Nice attack, 14th July 2016. Using framing analysis in combination with a qualitative content analysis the study focuses on 702 comments provided on Aftonbladets Facebook wall. This study analyses the opinions towards suffering visible in the material during the first days of the attack. Frame theory and media witnessing are used as theoretical framework. The analysis reveals four frames: the moral conflict frame where people criticize the witnessing by media, the reality conflict frame where people emphasizes suffering as a global issue, the justice conflict frame where suffering is discussed in terms compassion as something you deserve, and the emotional frame where people’s feelings of witnessing suffering is in focus. Previous research says that audiences are more likely to feel compassion towards victims if they can see themselves in them and/or if there is a short cultural and spatial distance between them, and this study has come to the same conclusion. However, this study contributes with knowledge about how the social media users negotiate compassion (the justice conflict frame and reality conflict frame) and focus on the questions of ethics when it comes to distant suffering (the moral conflict frame and emotional frame).

Tillsammans mot terrorn : En semiotisk analys av Dagens Nyheter samt Aftonbladets förstasidor i samband med terrorattacken på Drottninggatan 2017 / Together Against Terror : A semiotic analysis of Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet's front pages the days following the terror attack on Drottninggatan 2017

Andersson, Jenny January 2020 (has links)
In this essay, 10 front pages of the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet are analysed with the aim of examining how and with what visual expression the terrorist attack on Drottninggatan 2017 was visualised. The results of a semiotic analysis of the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet's front page visualisation of the terrorist attack on Drottninggatan 2017 show that the journalists who reported used arguments that alluding to readers' feelings. Large images that like to evoke emotions marked the front pages the day after the terrorist attack. The images themselves contained visual elements that showed that they related to a rhetorical strategy when reporting. Previous studies have mainly focused on how the news media has framed the incident, with the help of the semiotic analysis, a deeper meaning and understanding can be reached for how and in what way the news media visualised the terrorist attack.
