An intergrated model of the role of authentic leadership, psychological capital, psychological climate and intention to quit on employee work engagement: A comparative analysis

Balogun, Tolulope Victoria January 2017 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Industrial Psychology) / Organizations exist for the primary aim of meeting particular objectives: innovation and advancement, customer satisfaction, profit making and delivery of quality goods and services. These goals are mostly channelled with the intent of demonstrating high performance crucial for the continued existence of the organization especially in these rapidly changing global economies. This target, however, cannot be achieved without the aid of employees in the organization. A plethora of previous studies have proven that efficiency, productivity, high performance and stability on the job can be better achieved when the employees are dedicated, committed to their work roles and experience work engagement. The experience of work engagement on the part of the employees is not a random event; it depends on a myriad of factors that include authentic leadership. Leaders have a cumulative change effect on their followers; hence, leaders in an organization can be termed as core drivers of employee engagement. Hence, it becomes imperative to seek to understand what authentic leadership as a construct has to offer to the workplace.

O fenômeno jurídico como possibilidade do próprio no público / The legal phenomenon as a possibility of the proper in the public

Ana Paula Polacchini de Oliveira 26 May 2009 (has links)
The present work addresses its efforts on the inquisition of the possibility of authenticity in the legal phenomenon as perceived in the public. The method, conceived as a path, follows Martin Heideggers fundamental analytics, and Hans-Georg Gadamer´s comprehensive hermeneutics perceived phenomenologically. The legal phenomenon constitutes the Being that ex-ists, Dasein. Therefore, this study seeks to discuss the legal phenomenon, its Beingones-self condition, the everyday Being-with and its constitutive worldhood in the light of Heideggers philosophy of Being. Dasein is ontological, recognizes this existence and is questioned about it. Dasein can show itself as it is, in its authenticity and constitution, but it can also cloak its appearance in various modes. The They, the preponderant Dasein mode in its everydayness, promotes dispersion of the Dasein in its being-in-the world, making it detached and, keeps its authenticity obscured by publicity. Thus, it is essential to investigate Heideggers analytical thoughts in context. Once Heideggers basic thoughts have been studied and his fundamental analytics have been analized, the way of being of the law, maintained, repeated and dictated by publicity, begins to be questioned and the understanding Dasein´s legal phenomenon of the public world provides possibilities for an authentic project in its social concern.

Drive: My Motivation For Becoming A Holistic And Authentic Leader And Supervisor Of College Students

Lewis, Alisha Ami Oguri 01 January 2019 (has links)
In sixth grade, I did an art project where I painted a self-portrait. I decided to paint myself looking in a mirror. On the right-hand side of the canvas was the back of my head. On the left-hand side was a reflection of my face looking back at me in the mirror. During one session with my art teacher, she looked at my painting and paused before asking, “what happened?” She paused again before continuing that at one point the painting was on the right track, implying since that point, something had gone terribly wrong. I mean what was looking back at me in the mirror was quite scary. It was a girl with sharp, angry brows who was grimacing like that emoji with clenched teeth. By the end of the project the painting only got uglier and unfortunately lived in my family’s home for years to come. My mom once told me that “interesting” isn’t necessarily a good thing. It was said right after I proudly shared with her that I received a certificate that read, “Most Interesting Art Project” for a paper doll I made to look like myself in eighth grade. Since that subtle comment, I’ve always been careful about how I choose and use words. I didn’t dare challenge my mom’s comment. Instead, I recall being mad at my art teacher. How could she call my paper doll interesting! What did she mean by that? I’ve always been better with paper than paint and I knew that unlike my self-portrait that I had painted two years prior, this doll I constructed, complete with my ponytail and 空手着 (karate uniform) actually looked like me! It’s been over a decade since these two “art incidents” but oddly enough these stories are quite telling about my current self-perception. This is the power of storytelling. Not only does it help me to connect with people beyond small talk but writing and reflecting on my past has helped me understand who I am now. Today I am an educator, supervisor of students, and a young professional in higher education. More than titles or positions I hold, I find meaning in the relationships I build with my colleagues, students, mentors, and community. What I have learned and hope to share to all educators, staff, students, and leaders by way of writing this thesis is the value and necessity of exploring, unlearning, and challenging yourself to understand who you are, how you are who you are, and why you are who you are. While recognizing that I have changed and will continue to change through growth, learning, and time, I find security at this intersection of past and future where I am present in this self. As someone who is empathetic, I am sensitive to other people’s feelings and emotions. With context, I attempt to understand how someone else may feel still while recognizing I may never truly know their experience. On the contrary, I’ve discovered that to be empathetic with my own self is quite challenging! This insight has created inner chaos and has helped me understand how I do and don’t process my own feelings and emotions regularly. As someone who has made it a priority to serve others, I am fueled by keeping busy as a way to have a purpose in all of my actions. I want to be useful. Through this grind, I’ve lost a sense of who I am and valuing myself beyond my work and what I am capable of. I don’t believe this is a unique experience. I have taken responsibility for burning out and running on empty. I am shifting gears. I have taken this opportunity to write my own experiences in hopes that there is something to be learned from it for anyone who has ever taken on too much, has run away from themselves, or been uncomfortable with who they are.

Increasing Collaboration, Shared Values, and Authentic Teaching Practices Through Technological Professional Development

Blackford, Jennifer Louise 01 January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this outcome-based program evaluation project study was to investigate how professional development (PD) influenced the shared values of 25 district teachers regarding instructional technology and their collaboration and instructional practices using instructional technology. Inclusion criteria included (a) participants had to be 18 years or older and (b) participants had to be a certified teacher. Guided by Mishra and Koehler's TPACK theory and Guskey's model for PD evaluation, the research was designed to determine (a) how teachers demonstrate collaboration using instructional technology as a result of PD, (b) what shared values teachers have adopted regarding instructional technology as a result of PD, and (c) how the authentic teaching practices of participants have changed because of the technology PD. Data were collected through Likert surveys, interviews, and classroom observations. Data analysis included descriptive statistics for the quantitative portion, and identification of emerging themes for the qualitative portion. The results reflected ways technology is being implemented into instructional strategies. The implication of this study for social change includes support for including collaboration and shared values in professional development to improve instructional strategies incorporating technology, which can lead to improved learning environments. Teachers and the school can benefit by having the knowledge of how technology and PD provided by the OETT grant enhanced instruction. Social changes that may occur due to the findings of this study include the school gaining a better understanding of the influence of technology in instruction on student learning and identifying tools that potentially increased teacher uses of the technologies purchased as well as teacher application of the knowledge gained in the PD provided through the grant.

Effects of Authentic Leadership Style and Nurse Engagement on Patient Satisfaction

Washburn, Kimberly Dawn 01 January 2017 (has links)
Ineffective leadership and disengaged nurses reduce the quality of care and patient satisfaction in healthcare organizations. Healthcare leaders can benefit from understanding the factors that improve leadership ability and nurse engagement to improve healthcare outcomes. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between the demonstration of authentic leadership characteristics and nurse engagement. The study's population comprised acute care registered nurses in a rural hospital in central Washington State. Authentic leadership theory and engagement theory constituted the theoretical framework. Independent variables were the 4 constructs of authentic leadership theory, self-awareness, balanced information processing, relational transparency, and internalized moral perspective; the dependent variable was nurse engagement. Three hundred sixty-nine registered nurses received 2 pen and paper, Likert-type scale surveys, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire, and Utrecht Worker Engagement Scale- 9 item, to complete for data collection. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. There was no relationship between the 4 constructs of authentic leadership and nurse engagement. The coefficient of determination demonstrated only 11% variation in nurse engagement related to the independent variables. Healthcare leaders face significant challenges. With a better understanding of the factors that lead to higher nurse engagement, leaders can increase both nurse and patient satisfaction, leading to better healthcare outcomes.

The Experience of Loss of Voice in Adolescent Girls: An Existential-Phenomenological Study

Cihonski, Deborah A 22 May 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of the Loss of Voice experience in adolescent girls using an existential-phenomenological interview approach. An open-ended interview was conducted and participants were asked to "Please think of a specific time when you had something important to say, but did not say it. In as much detail as possible, describe that experience." Each interview was tape-recorded, transcribed by the investigator, and then independently thematized (Jones, 1984) by the author and a doctoral colleague trained in Jones' (1984) analysis method. Interrater reliability of the themes reached 96% agreement for the overall sample. Individual transcription reliabilities ranged between 85-98%. Thematic analysis revealed six superordinate themes and four subthemes. The superordinate themes were Difficult Position, Feeling, Might Explode, Not Worth It, Who Am I?, and Nevermind. The subthemes So Much To Lose and Strong were part of superordinate theme Difficult Position. The subthemes Emotion and Physical were part of the superordinate theme Feeling. Analysis of these themes in their totality suggested a complex meaning structure of co-researchers Loss of Voice experiences. This research supports and expands the current literature on Loss of Voice by providing a more in-depth study of the meaning contained in a Loss of Voice experience. Directions for future research efforts, intervention, and prevention education are discussed.

Ledarskap i mångkulturella skolan : med utgångspunkt i autentiskt ledarskap

Kanni, Ali January 2010 (has links)

School leaders face the challenge of creating and maintaining learning during rapid and complex conditions. Some of the challenges associated with leadership based on authenticity in intercultural schools will be discussed. The purpose of this essay is to describe and gain an insight into three school leaders´ views on leadership in multicultural schools. The study is based on scientific articles and the survey consists of interviews with head teachers in different multicultural schools. The hermeneutic research approach has been the basis for this study through qualitative interviews and collected data for analysis. To get a better understanding of the issues this essay culminates in, different leadership styles are shortly presented. The characteristics that underpin this study will hopefully be better understood through definitions of key concepts. In an attempt to further define authentic leadership, the concept of authentic followership will be introduced and discussed. Effective leadership in intercultural schools requires genuine understanding and action. In line with this, various strategies are proposed by which leaders can consciously transform and better understand the problems and find solutions in intercultural school contexts.
