An o without a figure : King Lear and the mask of the fool

Traub, Miranda Jane 04 October 2004
In the topical abundance or superabundance of Shakespeares King Lear, almost all major thematic patterns, images, and symbols are linked to Lears enigmatic companion, the Fool. The Fool surpasses Shakespeares other fools when he is given a major role, yet he is more than a major figure: he is the pivot for action and interpretation. The presence and the importance of the Fool are emphasized further when almost half of Lears characters are referred to as fools. The stark, barren hinterland of Lear is shot through by the conspicuously forceful presence of folly. The fools propensity for misrule coupled with his centrality to the text results in a dramatic structure that itself breaks the rules. King Lear is the most generically puzzling play in Shakespeares corpus. Lear, a tragedy, draws upon comedy, history, romantic comedy, romance, and morality in indefinable and unparalleled ways. Just as form is juxtaposed in Lear, religious systems or identities are also contrasted. Pagan, Christian, existential, nihilistic, and moralistic interpretations are readily discernable. The fool, a potential nexus for structural questions, may also be at the heart of the question of spiritual identity. To locate the fool at the source of both structural and spiritual problems, and to discern why the fool factors so prominently especially in a play viewed as Shakespeares darkest, are the two endeavours of this thesis.

The Journey of the Fool

Sullivan, Ellen Mowson 31 October 2005 (has links)
Design in the civic realm demands opportunities to recognize commonality. Architecture, therefore, must provide a call and response between visitor and space. This intimate dialogue can only occur where landscape elements speak a universal language. Revelatory, Allegorical, Cosmological and Vernacular methods of design have traditionally been employed to communicate in the landscape. This project explores the method of Archetypal design as a means to avoid the culturally-dependent, and hence, esoteric language of design and so create an exoteric language more appropriate for civic space. / Master of Landscape Architecture

A Fool's Journey: An Exploration of Physical Comedy in Theory and Practice

Pinkham, Bryce Allen January 2005 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Scott T. Cummings / My Senior Honors Thesis may be understood as a two-part investigation that addresses both theoretical and practical concerns of physical comedy and the language of gesture. I will first present some of my more general findings about comedy in order to more accurately zero in on the figure of 'the Fool.' I will thereafter investigate the function of the Fool in society and report on two of his most definitive iterations: Arlecchino, of the Italian Commedia dell'Arte and Bill Irwin of the contemporary stage. These theoretical components will eventually serve as a foundation for the practical side of my project- the creation of my own physical performance piece. In the final part of this document I will outline the process of conceiving and developing a physical comedy performance all my own, referring to my research whenever possible. My hope is that this paper will serve as both an informational document about some of the most important historical influences on physical comedy and the language of gesture, as well as relate how those influences affected me in the process of imagination and creation that is the joy of theatre. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2005. / Submitted to: Boston College. Time Wounds All Heels: Human Nature and the Rationality of Just Behavior

Slattery, Timothy Glenn 07 February 2014 (has links)
We share our world with many people who ignore the principles of justice and who regularly take advantage of others by breaching trust or breaking agreements. This dissertation is about the irrationality of the actions of these covenant-breakers. A covenant-breaker typically believes that unjust behavior is to his advantage and that only a fool would act in any other way. Would it not be disturbing if this were true? My central claim will be that adherence to the precepts of justice is a rational strategy for a self-interested actor. I intend to demonstrate that con men and covenant-breakers do not act rationally when violating an agreement. I will trace the concept of justice as it evolves through philosophical history and show that, while the concept of justice changes as the underlying concept of human nature and psychology changes, the argument in favor of the rationality of just behavior remains coherent throughout. Each historical interpretation will advance some form of the claim that the consistent observance of cooperative agreements is a rational strategy, and at each point an interlocutor will object. I will show that these interlocutors are mistaken. My motivating goal is to show that justice, understood as the consistent observance of cooperative agreements, is rational. I want to respond to the clandestine cheaters and other skeptics who believe that just behavior is for suckers, because, if the skeptics are right, and justice is indeed irrational, then those among us who are acting in a just manner are paying an unnecessary cost.

Entrepreneur or Fool : A comparative study of the housing market in Stockholm and London

Spiroska, Elena, Broman, Daniel January 2020 (has links)
During the past few years, the housing price has increased for both Sweden and the United Kingdom, and according to previous studies there can be many reasons for this development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of differences and similarities between two housing markets. Specifically, this study explores how investors and buyers of housing acts on different markets, and how this changes the price development. The two regions this study focuses on are Greater Stockholm, in comparison with Greater London during the time period January 2005 until December 2018. The theories used are the Greater Fool theory and the Market Process theory, to analyze the result from the regressions run for this study. In the empirical study, time series were used, where several independent variables examined the potential connection to the housing price development. One time series was used for Greater Stockholm, and one time series for Greater London. The result of the study gave ambiguous indications, where most of the variables did not show statistical significance. This means that the change in these variables is not likely to affect the development of housing prices. While two variables for Greater London turned out to be statistically significant.
